  • 'Fruit Punch' is one of Gary Zill's new mango varieties and it tastes AMAZING! It's a seedling of 'Zill-80' and 'Jakarta' is the likely pollinating parent.
    We gathered Marlys Zill, Har Mahdeem, Walter Zill and more to talk about and taste this unique mango!

    Tried this in 2011 at Walter Zill's place in Boynton Beach, Florida, while it was still known as M-23. I like rich-sweet mangoes. My husband likes sweet-tart mangoes. At first bite we BOTH knew this was THE mango we wanted to plant. It's our favorite of the 150 varieties we've tasted and made notes on. Walter described the tree as normal growth habit. Mango flavor is so influenced by soil, weather & root stock that your results may vary. The name I'd have picked for this variety is Pinnacle, because it's top of the pile, in my opinion!

      Thanks Kathy. Hard to find growth habit information on new varieties. I'm running out of backyard space and may create a cocktail tree.

      @Nicholas me too. I'm investigating planting a Piva so I can experiment with dwarfing some of the robust Florida varieties

    Hi Chris, I just picked up my mango tree!!! Was going to go tasting and pick up a tree in June but I went to Exotica for something else and they had a really beat up (suffering from recent freeze) looking fruit punch 3 year tree that I was able to get a great deal on. Going to nurse it back to health in a 15g container and then transplant it in the fall. Wish me luck!!!

      right now based on the attributes and description I'm interested in dwarf hawaiian. Want a dwarf tree, I like a smaller fruit... multiple fruitings a plus!

      The best way to know which mango to plant is to taste the fruit!
      Yes, 'Dwarf Hawaiian' is a great mango and it's always a perk to have multiple crops!

      i'm lucky that I have Exotica in Vista near me, they told me to come check things out in June... I was hoping to get one in the ground and have it grow into summer but I guess I'll keep it in a container for the 1st year, or transplant it in the fall. What do you think would be a good time to transplant a 15-20 gallon tree? I'm in Zone 10 socal. Thanks for the responses!

    En Canarias tenemos muchas variedades y todas son muy sabrosas debido al clima que oscila entre 15 y 22 grados todo el año

    I hope my fruit punch has fruit next year it was planted January 2018 topped it and 8 new branch’s came. Then I tip them after the second flush was done, two weeks ago. Do you think I should leave it go now? It was in a 7 gallon container when I bought it the trunk was maybe 1 1/2 to 2 inches on the bottom.

    • @TrulyTropical

      Our largest Fruit Punch tree seemed plenty big last season, but didn't set fruit until this year...
      Not sure what to recommend since we thought conditions were good last year. Perhaps we trimmed it too late in the year? This variety might be more sensitive to pruning than others... Just not enough information out there yet

    • @nicholas8479
      @nicholas8479 6 лет назад +2

      Jack, I'd remove the flowers/fruit until the tree is well established. Otherwise, you'll stunt the tree.

      Nicholas Stroganoff I will see what happens in the spring 19 maybe leave one or two flowers. I know I don’t want to overdo it.

    There are a couple of groves on Merritt Island that sell mangos right off the street and one year my wife and I bought a few zill mangos. They absolutely blew my mind. I've been trying to find a Zill tree since then but i've never been able to find one. It's exciting to hear that this variety is based off of Zill. How do you rate it compared to a regular zill?
