    I remember, back in the late 50s and 60s in Baltimore, my dad said that turkey was cheaper than bologna. Turkey was $.29/lb. Dad bought a few and out in our second-hand freezer. Fast forward to present day. I now live in Missoula, Montana. My dad's words couldn't be mire true. We brought our little family's tradition of deep frying our turkey for Thanksgiving. My son-in-law's family had never had it before, it was a sudden favorite. This past November, WinCo had frozen turkeys on sale for $.99/lb so I bought one to cook after Turkey Day since we went to a family Thanksgiving pot luck. Son-in-law deep fried it and we shared the bird for sandwiches/etc. I came home with the carcass and made some bone broth to can. I went back to WinCo a few days later and picked up another turkey for $.99/lb to go in my freezer. I think it's time for that turkey to come out, thaw, and be canned with broth for our shelves. I have quite a few empty jars from eating through my pantry over the winter. I'm looking for reasonably priced ground beef/pork, sausage, a beef roast or 2, and maybe some pork. I need to restock my shelves. Also, I might pick up a few 10# bags of frozen chicken leg quarters to can. Me be some chicken feet/paws from WinCo to make some chicken bone broth. I always share with my daughter/son-in-law. Thank you for my memory and your video.

    One of our favorite turkey recipes is Turkey Pot Roast. It uses turkey thighs only, and the usual onions, potatoes, and carrots. The sauce it swims in has a base of cream of mushroom soup, herbs and red wine. The thighs are always hard to find. My son's birthday is coming up, and though I consider this pot roast to be a cold weather meal, he always wants it, in June! But I can't find another thigh (had one in the freezer). I find the complete pot roast does not can well -- the herbs either become bitter or disappear. But I have successfully canned one skinless turkey thigh in broth per quart jar. I'll have to use that. Thank you for your fun, informative videos.

    I just canned ground turkey a couple months back in preparation for my rotator cuff & bicep repair surgery I had 2 weeks ago. I use it for anything that I’d use ground beef for. I usually add beef broth or bouillon to add a beefy flavor to it when I go to cook it.

    Pam: I always wait until after Christmas and buy a stock of turkey for very little money. I believe I got some of them for 69 cents a pound. I buy whole turkey and I cut the legs and thighs off and save them for my hubs to smoke on the bbq grill in the summer. I have also used the dark meat pulled from the bone and drenched in bbq sauce for sandwiches. We eat turkey all year long. And the old time favorite turkey pot pie. My All American canner book came with info for canning rabbit and turkey. Keep up the good work.

    Pam, this was very surprising info that USDA guidelines doesn't specifically comment on turkey! I just assumed it did, following the poultry guidelines. Oh well. I was advised years ago to eat turkey about half hour before bedtime, to combat chronic insomnia. It really works! I can it in the squat halfpints. Usually each halfpint will be 2 nights bedtime snacks...unless I really didn't sleep well the night before! So turkey in my canning pantry is a staple.

    Hmmm...back in the 80's when I bought my presto pressure canner, the booklet lumped turkey, goose, chicken and duck together in the canning poultry section. Rabbit was a sub section with different instructions for prepping. Will be interesting to see if instructions have changed.

    • @marthasundquist5761
      @marthasundquist5761 Месяц назад +3

      Well instructions appear the same. With the caveat that hot pack produces a nicer looking product as the poultry when raw packed does not usually produce quite enough liquid to cover the product. As previously explained by Pam, it is not because it is unsafe...just doesn't look as pretty.

    Once my financial institution actually did call to ensure that I was the one who'd used my card. I used to do some traveling, but it was in an area that I had never stayed before. They gave me the actual amounts and places...I had actually made the purchases using my card. This was roughly 20 years ago, too. I really appreciated that they were on top of things. However, today, I would not be trusting. I would say that I couldn't take the call at this time and hang up. Then I would call the institution myself, just as you did. It is sad that there are people who seek to take advantage of people this way. Or any way, for that matter.
    I am not a turkey person, but I'm looking forward to the recipes in the booklet for several reasons: my husband does love it, it is healthier, and it is an inexpensive meat. I have had various dishes made with ground turkey and couldn't tell the difference. My sister made the best enchiladas using ground turkey. I have that recipe, but I usually substitute beef. I do prefer beef, but from something I read a few months ago, I believe we may see a beef shortage within the next year or so. It's always a good idea to have back up plans. Thank you!

My older son, says hmmm until they are deep into their spiel, then uses a very hollow voice and intones, "According to the prophesy..." Whatever they come up with next, he just repeats this until they get tired and/or disgusted and hang up.

    I've been watching your powdered milk video and a whole lot food storage videos and still haven't found the answer to this. Safety and efficiency, being your watchwords, I wonder if you can settle this for me: Are the plastic bags of powdered milk at the store as good as the mylar bags for long-term storage (1-2 years)? Or should the powdered milk be transferred to jars and vacuum sealed? Actually this applies also to a few other items. I buy dried tortellini, oats, muesli and all in sealed plastic bags - heat sealed, but they don't seem vacuum sealed. Is it better to transfer those to jars (which is what I have) and vacuum seal them, or should I leave them in the bags, none of which are mylar?

    • @RoseRedHomestead

      We have done the vacuum seal in jars as well as mylar bags in 5-gallon food storage approved buckets and mylar bags in 25 quart Sterlite bins. We also keep plastic or original containers in Sterlite bins to keep the critters out. In one of videos Pam showed the preventive measures we have taken to keep our stored food safe. Jim

      @@RoseRedHomestead Thank you. It sounds like transferring them to jars and vacuum sealing would be best in that case or they are just going to be sitting on shelves in those plastic bags and they don't seem as sound as mylar bags.
