I absolutely love how you get every bit out of your food. The bowls are clean! It drives me crazy to see people who waste food.
I hear my Mom say, " They must not have worked for that food, the way they are wasting it!"
She's been gone for 15 years and I still miss her. It's good to see others with her values!
You have no idea how long I have been waiting for someone else to echo this statement! My mother used to say “That people are starving over in Africa, so, don’t you dare waste that food!!” I am a firm believer in (waste not, want not).
I can hear my mother say CLEAN THAT CAN or jar lol😅😅
It drives me bonkers when people waste food. My kids working in grocery and restaurant industries say it’s heartbreaking how much food is thrown away that they aren’t allowed to rescue. I wonder if it’s a generational thing because I had to clean my plate as a child and was taught to never take more than I could finish.
Waste not want not !
Try an Apple Butter Bundt Cake with shredded apples and pecans with a Cinnamon Glaze.😋
"A little shy on headspace but it's going to be ok." I feel like I tell myself this every day 😅
I ❤ apple butter. I never tasted it until my 40s.
Apple butter is so good on buttered toast! Can't get enough of it!!!! !!!!!!
I make brown sugar when I need it. 1 cup white sugar and 1 tablespoon molasses. Pack it in cup as usual.
I have not had apple butter since my grandmother last served it to me when I was 10 years old back in 1956. It is so fortuitous for my that you posted this just as I am entering my mid-life crisis and am just now learning how to can. I can't wait to try this. THANK YOU
My great aunt when I was small used to send us apple butter that was out of this world delicious. Through my entire life I only found something similar in one place. Apple butter in the stores are not tasty. I finally tackled it last year after watching Heartway Farms video. I added a small amount of cherry juice like my family said yhey did. It turned out so fantastic and every time I eat it, it reminds me of my childhood.
How much is a small amount?
@teresatrump8366, how much is a small amount? Did you use tart cherry juice?
oooh I need to try this!
Use tart pie cherry juice. I just estimated based on the crockpot full. I'd estimate about 1/4 cup.
P.S. Heartway Farms put maple syrup in theirs. I chose not to.
I can almost smell the wonderful aroma of the apples and spices!
You are a lifesaver! Especially after I just counted 25 1/2 pints of Applesauce in my inventory!!!
Me too
We had so many apples at one time, that i used my electric roasting pan. It took a bit for it to cook down, but it was amazing!
thank you for this video! I have some applesauce that I canned a few years ago that no one really liked, not sweet enough. I'm going to try this out. At least I'll get something off my shelf that no one is eating and replace it with something we might all love. Thanks again
I'm inspired, this may be the year that I make some apple butter.
My mother taught me to keep a heel of bread in my brown sugar to keep it soft. Works like a charm. Sure surprised my husband when we were first married… lol. He called his mother and asked her if she did that; after she asked me why I did it, she started it, too! Old KY trick-or common knowledge?
You cannot assume it is common knowledge these days even though it does seem like something we were all taught early.... I have just discovered that many young people have NO idea that dill pickles are actually cucumbers!!!
@@maryjayne8746you’re kidding??! Kids these days!
I use a large marshmallow. I just toss one in with my brown sugar and it keeps it soft for ages. I always worry about bread molding.
Works very well. 😁👍 Ran across it online myself, unfortunately not passed on by family knowledge. 🤷♀️
I put applebutter on waffles and pancakes, too. I love how the house smells when making applebutter.
Tomorrow I'm canning sweet red peppers from my garden for on sandwiches, in salads and on pizza.
Just finished canning my second batch. I just core and slice but do not peel mine, throw in the slow cooker with a little sugar and cinnamon and cook on Low overnight. I turn it to warm in the morning and prop the lid with a spoon. After a few hours I use my immersion blender and continue to cook until thickened
A few years back my hubby bought several heritage apple trees and got several bu of a variety of the different varieties from the tree farm. I canned up spicy apple mince, pie slices. Saved all the peels and cores and made apple peel jelly. Ran the pulp left through my Squeezo and made the puree into apple butter. It's a family favorite and a big hit!
That is awesome! Thanks for sharing. Jim
@@RoseRedHomestead used your directions for the jelly. So yummy! Tree's need a few more years to produce apples
Live in hope.
My apple tree was prolific this year too. I made apple butter the old way. After all that time and mess was said and done, I thought, why didn't I just use some of the applesauce, like 20+ pints, and saved myself all that extra work??? You have confirmed my idea that it would work. Ah, well, next time. Thank you!
If you will put your brown sugar in a bottle and suck the air out of it and seal it it will last for a long time. i found a bottle that was 5 years old and thought it would be as hard as a rock. it was still very fresh and pliable.
Thank you!! You and Jim are a blessing!
I keep a marshmallow in my brown sugar to keep it soft🥰🥰🥰
Oh my great tip A must try
I think you could teach us anything and we'd enjoy it and learn from it. I can't say that any video of yours I've watched wasn't a joy, because they have all been enjoyable. Thank you. I think I could actually do this!
I am 53 years old and never tried apple butter until after watching your video, you inspired me thank you. I had 1 year old apple sauce I canned last year and turned it into apple butter, oh my goodness, soooo good.
i used my instant pot this year for making apple butter. so easy
Me too! Wonderful!
We have a large free to pick orchard 20 minutes from home. We pick 4 Aldi size reusable bags full of apples. I don't use a slow cooker, I use an electric roaster, I water bath can them and have apple butter for a year unless the grandkids get into the pantry without grandma knowing it!
Will be making this on Saturday. Thank you for the video. I learn so much from you.
Thank you, I've got some unsweet applesauce, so I'll try this tomorrow.
I usually make betwen a sauce and a butter. I quarter the apples, take out the seeds, and then stick everything in a slow cooker overnight. The next day I use my immersion blender. I leave the skins on and use lemon juice for my acid.
Thank you for sharing this. I have always wanted to learn how to make apple butter. You have made it so simple
Thanks, I went right to my pantry yesterday and put on store bought applesauce 46 ozs., hubs is diabetic so I used everything but cloves (dont like) added nutmeg & 2 tbls ACV and 2/3 cup granulated Splenda & 2/3 cup Swerve brown sugar, it took 7 hrs on high and made about 24 ozs, gonna freeze in ice cube trays & bag up to use when needed. Hubs loved it! 🎉
A secret my grandmother used to use, add a slice of brown bread to your brown sugar, when it dries and is hard just wet it and stick it back in-no fuss, no muss, no mold😊
I tried the bread trick and it works, but I thought I had to replace the bread every so often. Thanks for the tip.
I can never ignore watching RUclips cooking videos, especially on a Saturday! Thanks for sharing this recipe! ❤️
You are so welcome! Jim
Pam I have fresh apples in my crock pot right now cooking down to make apple butter. I also made apple pie filling yesterday & canned it. My neighbor let me come & pick apples from their trees. My 2 grandson's did the picking for me. They picked 2 of the 5 gallon buckets for me.
That sounds great! Thanks for watching our channel. Jim
Awesome! I was a little curious about what the PH was after cooking. Thanks!
It was posted in the video as 3

I love peanut butter with apple butter sandwiches.
I just made apple butter the other day in my crackpot. I did mine using red hots candy, turned out fantastic. I liked spiced apples, so I up my game .
Perfect timing! I’ve ordered Grabenstein apples to make applesauce I’ll also make apple butter. My son will be so happy he loves apple butter that’s not as sweet as store bought. Thank you for your s & Jim’s timely video.
You are welcome. Let us know the results of apple butter. Jim
@@RoseRedHomestead I’ll be happy to share my results
Apples didn't come in:( maybe a good thing came down with the Fall cold. Next year. Till then Hubby picking up some Cracker Barrel Apple Butter on his next trip will have to do.
I recently made pear butter in my big roaster. I used organic pears and left the skin on, then used the immersion blender. Transferred it to a big pot, brought it up to a low boil and steam canned it. I got 11 pints and one half pint. I love using appliance shortcuts whenever possible. I will be making apple butter the same way this week. Thanks for sharing that I can use applesauce to make apple butter, very helpful!
I do it this way too. I’m on round three, ten more to go! 😁So easy this way!
I haven’t had apple butter in decades. This looks so easy I might actually make some!
If you make some, let us know the results. Jim
I have been making it in my slow cooker and using store bought apple sauce. I Didn’t make any this past year, I lost my twin sister last July 30 th so I couldn’t get myself to do hardly anything. I Do have the jar apple sauce which the best by date will be coming up in a few months so I better get it done.glad your video popped up.thanks
Beautiful Pam and so easy with that method. I’ve got a couple bushels of apples coming this weekend. I
made peach butter this year. It’s took several hours to cook down and it’s a beautiful orange/brown color - looks like fall leaves!
Sounds great! Jim
A couple of years ago, I was making some apple butter in my slow cooker in our city condo. Our condo hangs out over a lake. With the lake humidity, it took three days to get to the right canning consistency, but it sure was good!
Three days makes sense. Jim
The TRUE meaning of “Processed” Food! Thank you so much! I love your channel! I want to CAN all of my food now! I have enjoyed you!
Thank you so much for this lesson on apple burter. Apple butter is at the top of y list for favorites. I'm fromVa and this was always on our table growing up. Mom would buy Whitehouse apple butter when dad didn't bring any home home from his milk route,he was a milk man😊 and boy it was fun being a child of a milk man. God bless❤ and thank you. Happy holidays
I have heavy rubber gloves that I use when I can. They protect my hands from the heat and also are non slip. I got them at the grocery store. Just heavy playtex kitchen gloves. ❤
I made crockpot applesauce one year when my apple tree gave in abundance. It was spectacular on vanilla icecream (especially warm straight out of the pot). I imagine this apple butter would be too.
Wow. That recipe is very different. I was raised with a recipe that uses red hot candies, sugar, seasonings, which makes a red apple butter but my m-n-l used cinnamon, which makes a dark apple butter. Never used brown sugar. But I'm sure it's delicious also, yum
Thank you!!! I will definitely be making this!!! I LOVE apple butter!!!
Beth here... I just made my apple butter yesterday. I leave the peels on and just core. Slice and put in crockpot with your preference of spices and cook on high for about 14 hours stirring whenever I think about it. High speed blender makes short work of the mushy apples and peels. Can the same way. So much easier than stovetop
Sounds like a great method. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you. Love dipping sweet potato fries in apple butter ❤
Now, that sounds great!
Here is a tip to help remove moisture from the apple butter. Place a kitchen towel over the crock pot then put the lid back on. The towel will absorb the moisture.
WOW - brilliant. Thank you
Thank you!!
Thanks! I love apple butter.
I'd like to try this recipe. Im sure it will be good. In years past, I've made apple butter with McIntosh apples, and it was out of this world! Lots of prep work, though, so I'm sure thia recipe will be very good for people who love apple butter but don't have much time for the prep work.
I LOVE that you showed us how to make Apple Butter!!! I LOVE apple butter!! I love how you shortened the process for this apple butter!!!
I made this,it was great!thank uou for your videos,,I love watching them,, they've taught me so much!!
The last time I had anything apple-related that wasn't applesauce was apple jelly. I now know how to turn unsweetened applesauce into apple butter. Thanks for sharing!
You are welcome. Jim
Would you consider doing some canning recipes using alternative sweeteners for diabetics? Thanks.
We were gifted a pint of apple butter this summer. It was delicious! Now I'm on a mission!! I don't have much in the way of canning supplies anymore, so I may just freeze the 3 pints? Thank you, Pam and Jim! 😊
Yes, up to a year. Jim
GREAT tutorial on apple butter-making! Thank you for this. You have a great presentation style! I bet even *I* can do this! Thank again for taking the time.
I would make applesauce and turn it into apple butter by adding the sugar and spices, putting it into a 225°oven overnight, making sure to cover the top. It was always done to perfection by morning. And kept people up at night from the gorgeous scent.
We have a food sensitive kiddo and I have found that mixing the types of apples and sweetening with apple cider there is no need for sugar. Some cinnamon & cloves towards the end😊
And I had no idea that we should test the ph. Thank you for all the great information!
Noticed your store bought brown sugar. Did you know it's simple to make and you'd never have to buy it again. It's made with granulated sugar and molasses. 1 cup to 1Tablespoon. I'll use 6 cups sugar with half cup of mollases into my mixer. Let it mix and fluff then put in a half gallon canning jar. Lasts us quite a long while before I need to make more. The mixing fluffs that 6 cups to 8 cups that's why I use 6. Just in case you didn't know.
Granulated sugar is not cane sugar though, it comes from sugar beet, not sugar cane.
I’m sure RRH knows that.
I rechecked several online sources, because this was not what I understood. Every online source I read stated WHITE sugar and molasses. White sugar is cane sugar. So, cane sugar is just fine. I have seen it made several times online, and no one had any complaints.
I don't buy brown sugar either, it is easy to make with white sugar and Brer Rabbit molasses.
Thank you!!
Looks yummy! I've never had fruit butter, but I might try it with my leftover pommice from when I canned apples and made apple peeling jelly.
My grandson loves this! He calls it apple pie jam❤
Thank you so much. Just canned my 1st batch of apple butter
will be making this recipe but with white and brown stevia looks amazing
I make apple butter for my parents to sell at their apple orchard. The last batch i did i peeled and cored all of my apples and then added a jar of apple sauce to it in my slow cooker. I found that sped up the cooking process a lot.
I use apple sauce to make apple butter. (Organic unsweetened). Instead of sugar, we use honey.
I have been making & gifting homemade applesauce using 3 different types of apples for years. I use a gallon of Apple cider instead of water to cook them down. One year I had the bright idea to buy large size cans of applesauce, it was horrible. I haven’t tried homemade applesauce, which I’m sure would be a better choice.
My friend makes applesauce like you do with apple cider instead of sugar
We hope that yours turn out better this year. Jim
I just opened a jar of apple butterI canned last fall, thank you for the tip of using an emersion blender.
I just canned up 19 half pints of apple butter. I did the long process of 2 slow cookers going of apples going for a day and a half low and slow. I don't mind the long process only because i have the cores and peels to make apple scrap jelly too.
Wow, I’m glad to see this video. I’ve made apple butter on the stove, it’s a process! I may revisit it now because I’ve seen you do it in the crockpot.
Let us know how it goes when you do. Jim
Lol i made apple butter this morning! Not this recipe but still its so good!
For thanksgiving I made apple cider and with all the left over apple I didn't wanna throw away 6 pounds of apples so I pureed them,
And it already has the consistency of apple butter after watching this I just need to add sugar , apple cider vinegar and reduce
My late great grandmother who passed 2 months ago made our entire family apple butter throughout the years , I hope it turns out the way she makes it. we thankfully got 6 jars full of the apple butter before she passed we are afraid to open them cause once we open one they'll go fast and it's the only thing we have left of her
We are sorry to hear about your grandmother. If I understand correctly you now have the ability to make apple butter any time you want. Jim
Another fantastic video! I'm a little surprised to see you don't make up you're own brown sugar. I recently priced brown sugar at Walmart. Wow! I'm glad, I make my own. Thank you, Pam and Jim, for all that you do! P.S. pop the whole bag of hard brown sugar into the microwave for 30 seconds. Be careful, it can be hot to handle but. it will soften even the hardest of brown sugar bricks, lol.
I made apple butter in the crockpot last year for the first time. I love it! It’s so simple!
Would you like share your recipe?
@@dianag4025 sure!
Crockpot Apple Butter
5 pounds peeled and sliced apples ( I used different varieties).
3 cups sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon salt
Place apples in crockpot in thirds layering sugar between each layer.
Add rest of ingredients on top and pack them down as well as you can.
Cover and cook on high for 1 hour. Stir and reduce heat to low and cook for 7 hours, stirring occasionally. After 6 hours uncover and cook for the last hour. Mixture should be dark brown and thick.
If you want a smoother apple butter you can purée in a blender or with a stick blender.
Place in sterile jars and lids. Water bath in hot water for 10 minutes or you can freeze.
It takes a while but you can do other things while you wait just stirring occasionally.
I hope you enjoy it!
@@angelasmith3558 Thank you for the recipe.
@@dianag4025 you are very welcome.
@@angelasmith3558 Thanks for sharing the recipe! I’ve never made apple butter and have only ever eaten it a few times (I didn’t grow up in an apple producing country) but your recipe sounds easy and doable and I’m intrigued to try it. Thanks a lot!! 🍎🍂🍁🥙
This is wonderful. Now I have a second use of all the applesauce I canned a couple of years ago. I do small batch canning to avoid waste but they sure add up, lol.
Yumm!! I love apple butter. This sure beats the old fashioned way. I remember my mother, making applesauce from scratch, 😢 peeling bushels of apples, then turning it into applebutter. She made hers outside, in a huge copper kettle, over an open fire. She stirred for hours, using a long handled, wooden, applebutter paddle, with holes in it. I remember seeing bags of sugar, ground cinnamon, and a small bottle of cinnamon oil for flavoring. I'm not sure what else went into the kettle. I also remember clean up of the copper pot, was a good salt and vinegar scrub, followed with a good rinse. I use a couple drops of cinnamon oil, whenever I bake an apple pie.
Thank you for letting know about your wonderful applebutter experience. Do you follow your mother's practices or has the technology helped you modify your making of applebutter? Your cinnamon oil sounds interesting for your apple pie making. Jim
@@RoseRedHomesteadmy mother cooked for a family of nine. Mine was only a family of 5, so I'm happy to say, mine were much smaller batches, made from applesauce I'd canned previously, or purchased apple sauce. The last batch I made, was in a roasting pan, in a slow oven. It needed only an occasional stir, not constantly like mom did. Mom's recipe was from an old Kerr canning book, which i now have, I checked, and it included sweet apple cider, cinnamon, allspice, and sugar, with her own addition of the cinnamon oil.
To keep my slow cooker lid aloof, I insert a toothpick between the pot and the lid. Works like a charm.
Pam - did you ever try apple-pear butter? Two years ago, I gave it a try. What a wonderful combination! I always include a Granny Smith apple or two because that gives it a slightly lower ph. Thanks for the great videos!
I can almost taste it! Yummm!
Awesome! Thanks for sharing
just what i need! a friend let me come and get apples last week
From comments and this video, i learned: truly cook down the apple butter much past what you would for applesauce. See the middle of video when she shows droplets of Abutter throughout cooking. Put around 1/4c tart cherry juice in 1 crockpot of Abutter for better flavor. Also use maple syrup instead of sugar. Add pears too if you want.
Buy litmus test strips so no longer need to add excess vinegar to perfectly good recipes!
Thank you all!
I don't can that much apple sauce, but i love apple butter. I buy the plain, unsweetened #10 cans (the large restaurant size) at Smart and Final, Walmart or a similar bulk store, and start with that. Nothing could be easier. The large cans are only about $7.50 for 108 ounces. Even the large, 46 ounce Great Value bottled of plain applesauce from Walmart work. They're less than $3.50.
My mom cooked hers in a roaster overnight in the oven, smelled so good!
That was fun! Thanks so much. 💖🌏
Your apple butter looks delicious!

Nice USDA test! Good on ya
love apple butter!
Put a piece of terra cotta in with your brown sugar. Somehow it keeps it moist.
Really! I have never heard of that before. I will definitely try that.
I was just talking to a friend yesterday about making apple butter for the first time, so I will definitely do this today. I need to empty some older jars of applesauce, so they can be used for the tomatoes that I need to can soon. (they are waiting in the freezer.) Perfect timing, thank you. I was wondering though, what is the difference between brown sugar and white sugar with a bit of molasses added?
I make my own brown sugar. Just like you said, it's just white sugar with molasses, mixed in my Kitchenaid until it's all the same color. Store bought used to get so hard that it was no good. Now I make it a quart at a time.
I heard that you can put a slice of bread in with the brown sugar to keep it moist. ❤
I don't like syrup on pancakes but apple butter is awesomely yummy!
I agree!
Thanks for your videos. One thing that I have been wanting to do it to find out if it is possible to can hot fudge or caramel. It may not be something everyone wants to do, but I think it would make wonderful neighbor Christmas gifts. Can you help me out with this?
Instead of slow cooker I used instant pot max on slow cook. Was done in 2 hrs.
