- I have a Home Cinema now after a friend sold me his NEC video projector. To add a bit to the experience I decided to show some Pearl & Dean adverts before the main presentation. This is my first attempt, the 1970s, but wish to make up at least one for each decade, 1950s thru 2000s, to go with the film showing.
Thanks go to Dave Jeffrey for the mock-up Academy countdown leader, although the first couple of seconds are from a genuine telecine'd leader.
I'd be interested in any constructive comments from those in the cinema industry or cinema addicts as to whether adverts were made up in any particular order..... or anything else about this example! Personally I feel that the scratches and dirt on the film make it true to advert presentation of the era :) ...well at our local anyway!
How did I make up the reel? It was quite simple. I converted large advert-laden .mp4 files to wmv, using FREE MP4 TO WMV CONVERTER, I used ASFBINWIN.EXE to extract adverts out of the large wmv file, this gave me .asf files. I then used MICROSOFT MOVIE MAKER to splice together the different files. Some were .wmv, some .asf and some .mp4.
Copyright of course remains with the original authors.

I remember the Regency Tandoori on Station Road all those years ago in the mid '70's. Good to see it is still going.

I remember being impressed & excited by the 'computer' graphics in the titles.
Some of the sales filmlets on here would not have been on the same Pearl & Dean advert reel. The Pearl & Dean titles were from around 1976; the Lyons Maid Now's The Time For Ice Cream filmlet is from 1961; the Butterkist filmlet is from 1968; the Kia-Ora Orange and Lemon and Lime filmlet is from 1970 and the Lyons Maid Neapolitan Dairy Ice Cream filmlet dates from 1962. Sales filmlets were always placed on the beginning of the adverts reel by the projectionist, in front of the Pearl & Dean reel. I was a cinema projectionist from 1962 to 1981, so I know.
Those Pearl and Dean titles were introduced 1972 and used until Summer 1996, albeit with a remaster and a change from open matte to a 1.85 widescreen frame in the mid-90s. The opening version used here in fact is the remaster (the closing is not). As for the placement of the sales trailers, it varied from cinema to cinema. In my experience, sales always went in between the Pearl and Dean reel and the trailer section. Some companies used to put the trailers before the adverts too, which I always found a bit poor - it was only when advertising companies like Pearl and Dean and Rank insisted in the contract by the late 80s that the adverts must be shown first that it became universal (although by the 80s most had begun doing that anyway).

Remember 'De Kuyper Cherry Brandy' & the 'Topps Tiles' one, appearing in the 70s !? "Always a MILLION Tiles in stock." & this was a great compilation !!! Including one of Keith Mansfield's creations at the end, now used on 'Sky Vegas' !!!

Wow - Awesome! My mum used to work at an independent cinema in Haverfordwest in the 70s - the place was my babysitter after school (along with Luke Skywalker and Vader for some of it) - this reel brought back lots of memories!

The titles you have here are from the remastered batch from the mid-90s. The evidence is that the blue rays were cleaned up (they were quite grainy on the original 70s and 80s prints) and are a slightly darker blue. Also this is true widescreen, whereas the originals were 'open matte' (full 4:3 frame but suitable for widescreen cropping by the projector plate). The outro originally had no telephone number also, just the title pulling back. There were also 2 telephone number versions. The first had the old 80s/90s London prefix, and on that one the telephone number stayed at the front while the Pearl and Dean logo went back only. Then after the prefix change in 1994 this alteration was made, with a new number and both going back at the end. The soundtrack was also mixed into Dolby SR at this time. Ironically, just 2 years later in July 1996 it was replaced!

unhban No problem. As for the order of ads, there wasn't anything particular, but alcohol/tobacco ads tended to be the last. The list P & D gave you sometimes used to say PLACE EARLY/LATE IN REEL if being more specific. Watch the vid called 'Various cinema advert reels (1950s-2003, UK)' to see the earlier titles with generic outro, and though not great quality, a vid called 'cinema ads with pearl and dean intro and outro' shows you the one with the older number.

Top marks for spotting the deliberate error! :) No, actually that one did pass me by. According to Wiki it was 1995 when inner London changed from 071 to 0171.
unhban It would have been 01 in the 1970s. Some people even still used the letters for the first 3 digits of the exchange in adverts. Yeah wiki confirms 01 from 1959 to 1990

Those are called casino plaques. Basically theyre chips used to represent large sums of money. They’re a lot more prevalent in European casinos in American ones. Watch any poker tournament from somewhere like Monte Carlo, every player has them

You need to have a few smokers sitting to your left, as ludicrous as it sounds, there was actually a smoker's "side" of the cinema. Get one of those fog machines, they're quite cheap. I may try what you did at home too.

Funny time back in England in the 70's - it was fine to advertise cigarettes and alcohol to kids. Now that's wrong. Back in the 70s England had some of the most draconian laws re pornography - but today that's legal ?
