I'd never heard of Pearl and Dean before a couple of months ago as I'm an American, but I recognize 1:41. Monty Python satirized it on an episode of their TV show as "Pearls Before Swine", then showed "ads" for "businesses" that were really fronts for call girls. Ha! I don't know how Python got away with that in 1969, but they did. This theme tune from 1972 onward is pretty damned cool, though!
Such an exciting, catchy and iconic piece of music; the absolute highlight of a trip to the cinema (apart from perhaps the film itself!) But even then, that greatly depends on the film! It's such a shame none of the UK's big three cinema chains (Odeon, Cineworld and Vue) are no longer using Pearl and Dean for their advertising... Luckily, my local smaller cinema chain still is!!
The fifth logo came out around 2006-ish and was only ever used as an outro - the film strip remained as the opener for this period. I would say it was used alongside the film strip until 2012 if not 2013, as the new titles were not made for 35mm as they were getting less and less by that period so would have been a waste of money. Top marks however for finding the 197o-1972 version of the Pillars - that is missing from virtually every Pearl and Dean logo history as most assume it went to Asteroid straight from the dancers, not realising the Pillars returned for a couple of years.
Ex cinema projectionist here. I always felt that the late 90’s redo logo was never synced to the music properly. The image always lagged until the end P&D logo.
Is the one at 3:04 normal speed? It sounds slowed down. The film strips made me think they produced the actual film reels pre-digital but turns out they're a 'cinema advertising company' (Wikipedia).
I have to say, whenever I saw the Pearl & Dean come on at the pictures in the 90s, I just cringed, it sounded so old-hat then. And you have to admit, they did rest on their laurels somewhat rehashing the 'Asteroid' tune. But that pa-pa-pa-paa really is the epitome of catchy advertising jingle, even people who never visited the cinema have heard it! And that 1969 sequence is great, as parodied by Monty Python!
It's interesting that this sticky rhythm is almost 50 years old!!!!
I agree!

Thanks for letting me know. Appreciate the support on finding the 1970-1972 logo. It was quite easy to find, really.
