  • It's been a while since I uploaded an oil painting demo, so join me as I paint a nocturne of this "story" painting. Along the way, I tell you what I'm thinking, and why I'm doing what I'm doing.

    Hey 👋 Steve!
    Fantastic night scene with the cool colors contrasted with the warm ‘cave’ figures and fire- I was waiting for that last hit of bright fire. Wonderful. Terrific work. I just found your channel today, as I picked up plein air oil painting 2 weeks ago, and after a 45 commercial art career, I’m looking to learn and enjoy the process again. Your work is inspiring. Thanks!

    I was reminded of various passages from 'The Exploration of the Colorado River and Its Canyons' especially the magical evenings in the kiva's.

      Thanks for checking in Dave. I remember reading this for the first time. John Wesley Powell's account of exploring the Colorado and Green Rivers was so cool because they were true explorers. There aren't many areas of the world that are left unexplored, sadly.

    Wow! That is stunning! Your work is so beautiful.
    When I was a child in grade school, in the late 60’s and early70’s, there was an artist on PBS that we watched in school. He would tell a story and sketch a picture in charcoal from the story while he talked. It was the only time all of us were quiet. Lol We we’re so enraptured with what he was doing, we forgot we were at school.
    Have you ever considered a Utube version of that? I think your subscribers would love it! I know I would.🐝🤗❤️

    Great video, Steve. Curious if you could please elaborate on what you meant by “lost and found edges”?

    • @SteveAtkinsonFineArt
      @SteveAtkinsonFineArt  Год назад

      Hi Jonathan, sure, lost and found edges refer to how hard or soft the edges between objects appear. A found edge is a harder edge and appears more in focus, it demands more attention. Lost edges are when an object goes back into the shadows or has a value similar to its surrounding values. I like to blur the edges in these areas. Oftentimes, I like to allow edges to disappear completely (or become "lost"), and so have less importance and be more artistic. It also gives the eye a rest without having everything equally important. After all, if everyone is singing at the top of their lungs, no one gets heard. I hope that helps you. Paint on!

    • @jonathan5914

      That makes a lot of sense. Thanks for explaining that. I really enjoy your videos and content. I look forward to more! Happy painting!

    Is it possible to have regular videos from you, say once every 2 weeks?

    • @SteveAtkinsonFineArt
      @SteveAtkinsonFineArt  Год назад

      Thanks Abi, I wish I could have a more regular release schedule for my videos. But my primary concern is making a living as a fine artist. This means keeping my galleries supplied with new work and finishing commissions quickly. I do my videos when I have some extra time, which isn't often enough. Between filming, editing hours of video, voice overs, and adding music, each one takes more time than I can believe. But not to worry, I have several in the works that will be released soon! Thanks for understanding and sticking with me. Make sure to subscribe and click the bell to be notified when I do release new videos.

      Hi Kennedy Law. I'm working on a video about a rodeo poster I did for the Prescott Frontier Days Rodeo. In it I show my process from start to finish, including preliminary concept pencils. The video is finished, I just need to do the voiceover explanation.
