The most disappointing part of this whole trial for me was not Brooks, but his mother and grandmother. It seems like they let his entitled , whiny attitude take over them since he was a child. And they kept trying to deny his crimes with his bipolar disorder. Very selfish and delusional on their behalf.

Mentally ill people are way more likely to be *VICTIMS* of crime than mentally healthy people are, including violent crime. Mentally ill people are one of the demographics of people who are most likely to become victims of crime.

We lost the horror of what he did by the actions he performed in the courtroom. Exactly right. Which is why Judge Darrow was awesome…she spent the last nearly 3 hours focusing on the horrors, the victims, the survivors, and made the last statement about them and not him. It was exactly what he deserved…to be muted for those final hours, sentenced and shut up.

Judge D was brilliant -- insightful -- godly -- and my new hero. She protected the law and all of his rights (to avoid losing an appeal) while treating D with respect he didn't deserve, and honoring each and every victim and survivor. I've never seen such amazing justice like she gave this entire case. I watched every single moment of the trial. Darrel is the MOST narcissistic, arrogant human I've ever encountered. He will not live long, in my opinion. He will rack up unending charges and violations behind bars, since he only knows how to rebel against all authority or human decency. I was sickened by the way he distorted and twisted the precious Word of God and the gospel of Jesus. Thank the Lord that God knows his true mind and heart and will judge him accordingly. No one who speaks the name of the Lord Jesus but lives the way he does will receive eternal life. Brilliant judge and awesome prosecution team. D's mom and grandmom are naive and never truly loved or knew their boy the way he deserved. Making excuses for your flesh and blood is not love. Every time they protected him and he got away with evil and wrong doing, it confirmed in his mind that he is above all rules and laws and authority. They are so much to blame for how he turned out. What made me sad for Darrel, actually, was how the grandma and mom never ONCE spoke one word of love or support for their boy -- never said anything of value about his life and person. They only spoke of mental illness. Period. That was sad. That is NOT love and advocacy and unconditional acceptance. There is a spiritual void in that family that is sickening and evil.

If you want to teach your child responsibility they need to live with the consequences of their own actions. If you run over your ex-girlfriend with a car you have to live with being in custody and not being bailed out by your mother! No matter how much you love your child but because you love your child.

@20:00 - I partially agree with your reasoning. I agree he has no impulse control. I think the main reason he did this was because he abuses women and when Mr. Kirby stood up to him, he fled the scene and took his rage ("disraspeck" to use his terminology) out on the participants in the parade. Had there been no parade, he would have gone home and beaten up his mother (I'm pretty sure there is a history there) or some other woman. He's too spineless to go start a bar fight or something because then he would likely face another male. This is typical of his type of abuser. His victims tend to be women and he was made to look weak in front of Ms. Patterson by Mr. Kirby.
This is why he made a point of calling him as a witness. He wanted to get back at him and in the environment of a courtroom Brooks knows nothing physical can happen. He called Ms. Patterson as a witness because he wants to put the blame on her. In his head, the jury would see that she pushed his buttons and "made him" do this. Both witnesses refused to give in to his intimidation.
I totally agree with you on him saying "what happened" instead of what "I did" is because he refuses to accept accountability.

I think he just needed a minute to cool off. [Edit: NM... I wrote this before I got to the point in the video where you mentioned that.] And 2) I think he wasn't upset because DB was interrupting the DA, but rather because DB's contempt was happening while they were setting things up so that a little girl could speak. There is no mention that Mrs Sparks nearly lost TWO sons that day...they both were hit by the SUV! It was touch and go...the older son survived, and now feels guilt that his little brother didn't make it. Imagine that weekend for their family, with an 8 and 10 year old clinging to life!

OMG she's a true Saint. And I've never known anyone as evil as him. No conscience. Zero. Personally the dearth penalty would be too easy for him. I hope he lives at least until he's 100 and never has contact with another human. The guards are going to despise him. He's totally alone now. Still not enough for what he caused. But it's the best outcome.

Thank you for putting this together. Darell Brooks is truly a phenomenon. What makes it possible for such an individual to exist? Perhaps the only answer we can give is stated by the judge: "Some people, unfortunately, choose a path of evil" (24:17).

"What makes it possible for such an individual to exist". I don't have a comprehensive answer to that question, but I'll tell you one thing that encourages such monsters, namely a victim mentality. When society spends decades telling a group of people that they are perpetual victims, merely by dint of their immutable characteristics, then at least some individuals of that group are likely to feel that they are justified in taking revenge on their supposed oppersors. Darrell Brooks is poster boy for imagined victimhood.

The third-party intervener got them both convicted. When you watch the police interview, Darrell Brooks, Jr stated a few times that he knew his life was now over and he knew he wasn't getting out of this mess he created. By representing himself, it's his last show of how he controls things. His narcissism was on full display. He knew this was the only time he was going to get this last chance to be center stage. He knew exactly what he was doing.

It's truly disheartening that Brooks is clearly incapable of empathy and remorse, and his narcissism will never allow it to sink in for him that HE did this.
