IKEA hacks (there's a whole website of them) are brilliant - closet looks great. One comment : you really ought to make your next project to be building a workbench - ideally on wheels, to store the power tools and be a much safer working environment for the chop/mitre/circular saw . . . crouching on the floor to saw is a bit risky.

Hi Andrea! I'm so excited that I ran across your video just in time to build my own walk-in closet. I found the exact same dresser you have at IKEA. My only issue is measuring the depth for the side boards. If you would kindly share your measurements, I would really appreciate it. This will ensure that if I follow your steps, the dresser will fit perfectly into the space. I was thinking your closet depth was aprox. 18 inches which is what I was needing anyway. However, I want to make sure so the dresser will fit perfectly along with the brace boards and framing. Although, I have done other home improvement projects, this is my first time attempting something on this scale. Thank you in advance for your help.

  • @ismichelman

Amazing video! My wife and I are in the final stages of our custom Ikea closet buildout. Our next step is drawer fronts to bring everything flush with the rest of the added trim, similar to how you did it in this video. We initially bought 1x8 primed pine boards thinking they were 7.5 inches wide (which would allow for nearly perfect 1/8" spacing around each drawer). However, they're only 7.25 inches wide and will create too wide of a gap between each drawer. I'm considering going the MDF board route like you did, but I'm surprised Home Depot ripped yours down in pieces less than 12 inches... can you share your experience with that and how you went about asking them to make project cuts? Also, how precise were the rip downs? Everyone always says the home depot saws will shred your material, but your cuts look so clean.

What are the dimensions of your closet? I can't see it posted anywhere. We are looking to do something similar. Our closet is only 79.5" wide though. It was wire racked on both sides. Just trying to guess how tight it might feel with drawers and cabinets that are 22 7/8" on each side...gives us about 33 inches of space in the middle.

As far back as I can remember, IKEA had always been short of items, for extreme periods of time...

I am not a fan of IKEA PAX because it's poor quality. Neither the carcass nor the shelves are made of solid particle board, there is such cardboard stuff inside, so the are not very robust. All our shelves are hanging through because the can't bear the weight.
So I think you luckily came up with a better solution. 😊👍

Ok- I haven’t necessarily scoured the comments for how deep you made these closets…so just thought I’d ask. I noticed that you said “how deep I chose”, and “based on your measurements“…. So how deep did you make your closet/shelves? I noticed you left a gap behind the dressers…
We’ve done a complete remodel in our house that included pushing our laundry room into the small walk-in closet that is actually now our shower. So we decided (after living in the UK for almost 4 years) that our bedroom space would do really well with built in wardrobes on either side of our bed.

Hi new to your channel. I really enjoyed myself and this is absolutely beautiful.
Question: I know it depends on your room, but what is the dimension of the plywood and the thickness did you use? New subscriber! TFS

I know I am probably asking lots of questions but I noticed your dressers have a metal bar on top. The 4 I just bought did not come with that. Is that something you added? If so can you share where you got it? Also what was the dimension of your side panels, did you go 20" or 21"? I hope you can answer my questions. :)

By the looks of it, your closet is 6'10"x8'6". Would this setup work for a more narrow closet? Or would the drawers be unusable?

Hello Andrea and Dean, (my name Dean also). So whats worse, working in Texas cold or Texas heat ?? In the Phx area i would rather work in 90+ degrees than 50s. I share Deans comment, "hell no" below 59 degrees.

"Home Depot can make a clean consistent cut if cutting with the grain." Not in my experience. They cannot make an accurate cut, say 11-7/8". It will likely be more or less. They do tons of cutting and the blades they have on the saws are often rough, with bent teeth, causing a ragged edge. Good luck getting a clean cut.

Thank you for this amazing video. I’m trying to make a similar closet. Do you have any suggestions on how to make half doors above the drawers?

All that gas you could be saving if you would just buy extra. What made you decide to go from Home Depot to mainly Lowes?
