This is one of the greatest defensive performances of all-time. Dennis Rodman shut down Magic Johnson and singlehandedly stopped the Showtime Lakers' fastbreak game. He made it almost impossible for Magic to post up or penetrate.
Even when Magic did score or assist with Rodman in the game, it was usually with a screen to get Rodman off of him, or off a fortunate rebound. He only scored once with Rodman on him on a post-up
Rodman also guarded Kareem, Worthy, and Thompson at certain points during the game. Along with Magic, that's 4 number 1 Draft picks that he guarded in the same game. Dennis Rodman is the ONLY player in history that could consistently AND effectively guard all 5 positions for long periods of time.
The craziest part is Dennis Rodman wasn't even in his prime during this NBA Finals - this was only his 2nd season and he was still a bench player. Спорт
Wow. Rodman singlehandedley changed the flow of the game with his defensive present. 0 fast break points when he was on the floor? Incredible
Christmas present?
Unbelievable, as time goes by, more and more you see Rodman either getting the offensive rebound or deflecting it to a teammate, no wonder there were no fast breaks. He was not leaving until they scored the basket!
Rodman 1, Magic 0
One of the more remarkable defenders and sheer athletes the game/league has ever seen. Great post, man.
One of my fav players ever
The final game at the Pontiac Silverdome.
The day after Isiah Thomas' son Joshua born .
3 days before Isiah's incredible Game 6 performance.
The last game the Pistons won with the legendary cheerleaders Ralph Lewis, Walker D Russell and Chucky Nevitt.
Awesome channel man!
Rodman was already a little above average age for basketball but continued playing for more than 10 years
Rodman had offense with us. Thanks for showing these videos of the Detroit Pistons at their best. All they have said is the Pistons cheap shits win their games. This shows the Pistons talent.
Good job Dennis. You rock!!
This is the same guy who later will guard Shaq and Mourning. Google it, if you don't believe me.
What an athlete
Not only that, he blocked Jabbar twice in the same offense, blocked Hakeem on what would have been a playoff game winning shot. Also, would have won it all with San Antonio, but the coach did not start him vs Rockets, to punish him! Crazy.
Best athletes in that era .
Guarded all 5 positions in his Pistons career:
PG-Magic, Doc Rivers, Derek Harper and Penny Hardaway.
SG-Ricky Pierce, Jordan, Drexler, Rolando Blackmon, Mitch Richmond, Reggie Miller.
SF-Bird, Dr J, Worthy, Dominique, Aguirre, Marques Johnson, X Man, Kersey.
PF-Malone, Buck Williams, Grant, Dale and Antonio Davis, Barkley, Chambers and McHale.
C-Jabbar, Moses, Ewing, Olajuwon, Robinson, Thompson, Smits, Duckworth, Parish.
@@123slasher.16 Wow.
Who cares how many points he scored? Magic is a true point god. He dominates a game without having to score.
He did not exactly dominate when Rodman was around. Commited offensive fouls, lost the ball and made bad passes. On top of all that, he also missed shots and only made 1 field goal.
@John Imegi Yes.
Rodman 👍
Without Dennis M.J. doesn't win his 4th, 5th, or 6th title period, & the nba got it wrong during the '96 Finals Rodman not Jordan should have been the M.V.P. period!!!
Maybe aonics can win title and also dennis cant win a ring if he doesnt have a good team mates
You’re right, Rodman should’ve been finals MVP that year but Jordan’s first full season back and they won the title on Father’s Day and the whole thing with Jordan’s dad. You knew they weren’t gonna give it to anyone other than Jordan
@@zhawn4894 George Karl himself said it: Rodman was the reason they (the Bulls) were successful. He should know.
Rodman is what 27 here??
I know I’m comparing eras again, however i don’t see Klay and Curry doing to
Much against Dennis here.
That goes for a prime Pippen as well.
They both move there feet extremely well and have so much length .
Did Magic and Isiah instead of shaking hands before the game kiss?
and?
whats the problem?
Magic's career ended because he was such a great sport that he caught HIV. What's the problem?
It's a sign of respect gay or not
shirts he's asking u snowflake
But Magic had 17 assists.
Magic was one of the best players offensively and not all were on Rodman and Rodman was a young still clamp him up a bit
@@Cg-ru3eh Rodman pushed Magic more than anybody in the league.
these posts are meaningless but who won game 7
Thomas always puts his name in the same category as Jordan, Magic and Bird when he's not even the best player on his own team.
Pistons with Dantley was a much stronger team than the 89 Detroit Pistons championship team. They had more offense.
Dennis should have moved his skinny ass more in Game 7 against Worthy ....
Wow first I see him shut down the greatest ever (Shaq)
and now he shuts down the best PG ever
lmao shaq? the greatest ever? lmao give me a break
+4 20 this guys an idiot
i dont think he means it litterally but then again his profile pic might say otherwise clearly a kobe hater
Funny but he was never a problem for Larry Bird...
Bird may have been the smartest basketball player that every played the game. At least, he was in the top few. Plus, he was the best long range shooter of his era, so everyone had to come out to guard him, and he found a way around them when they did. Larry Legend.
@@d.e.b.b5788 how is he the smartest player? He can shoot the ball, that's it.
Gtfoh with that racist crap.
Larry bird's game was different.
“Shut” Magic down, with a 17 assist performance!? Man, please!
Magic was a right hand dribbled mostly with his right hand and went to his right and really only had a hook shot
Dumb comment
Did they kiss in the beginning? Magic and Thomas
Yeah so?
Andrew Lewis They were reallllllly close friends.
But Gms 6 and 7 though...Magic had 22/19/4 and 19/14/5 on 53% shooting. Should've won the Finals MVP over Worthy, who got it on that great 7th game
And btw...Magic had 15 pts, 17 asts, and 6 asts on just 4 TO's. If that's getting shut down, I want to get shut down all the time.
Well in this Game 5, you'll see that almost all of Magic's points and assists came when Rodman was not in the game. When Rodman came in the first time, the Lakers had 0 fast break points in the 2nd quarter and Magic only scored 1 FG on Rodman the whole game
Picking and choosing the right spots to put your best defender on the other teams best player is what made Daly and Phil so effective in using Rodman.
_"Bob Hill came up to me and asked if I would take Hakeem in the first half, and I said no. I would have taken him in the second half, but not the first. Any coach will tell you you don't put your best defensive player on the other team's best offensive player in the first half. You put it all on the line in the second half. That's how it worked with Chuck Daly in Detroit, and I know that's how Phil Jackson feels in Chicago."_
- Dennis Rodman
I didn't watch Game 6 and 7 so I dont know how many of those numbers came on Rodman or why Daly wouldnt use Rodman more if he was doing a good job. But you have to consider that this is a 2nd year Rodman coming off the bench going against a prime Magic Johnson, the fact he handled Magic the way he did in Game 5 is pretty crazy.
But I agree, Magic should have won Finals MVP
+Jaxson Fugate But he got most of those stats when Rodman was off the court, so Rodman did shut him down...
Nobody Touches Jordan
Bird, easily.
those were gems only because Isiah Thomas was badly injured in game 6. Pistons should have won in 1988.
The Lakers and the Celtics took the game to a higher level in the 80s. They played the game the right way with great ball movement. It was a joy to watch and still is on You Tube. Magic and Larry were winners on the court and did well after their playing careers. The Pistons were just a bunch of cheap shot artists. They couldn't beat Boston or LA by scoring, so they played dirty to get by. Rodman couldn't hit a billboard with a sniper's rifle. His offensive skills then lacked equally to what his life skills lack today. I do take pleasure in seeing him as the person he currently is. A broke loser.
Maybe the poster of this video could later post a video of Rodman shooting free throws during the '88 Finals. Now that would be entertaining.
You forgot what a great diplomatic envoy he is with N. Korea!
Twice DPOY Dennis Rodman's single game high is 34 points, scored in his 4th year in the NBA. So much for "couldn't hit a billboard with a rifle". Draymond Green's still is only 31. Rodman's net worth is 500 thousand dollars. If that is broke, then the majority of people in USA are broke. And I bet you haven't had the life he has. Carmen Elektra, Vivica Fox, Madonna...not even close.
