- Canon's EOS 5D marked the entry for Canon into the non-professional full frame camera marketplace. The 5D offered advanced photographers and photographers who take occasional paid work an offering that provided full frame image quality in an affordable package. The camera makes a number of compromises, even for the time it was released, with frame rate, buffer size, and build quality. However, today, as a used camera, it provides a very affordable way to learn photography with a straightforward interface and an absences of the frills and features that clutter Canon lower-tier cameras like the Rebel and Kiss cameras. This video series provides a comprehensive guide on how to use this camera including examples of when different features are useful.

2024 calling!! I bought my 2nd 5D (I had a used one in 2018 but sold it ... and regretted it ever since). My latest one cost $230 and it is in "Straight out of the box" condition, I swear nobody has ever used it. They are fantastic camera and some of the greatest images ever taken were taken on this camera.
Remember!! Great cameras don't stop being great.
Thank you for the excellent video. I bought my 5D new in 2006. I was an airline pilot and took it everywhere. I'm 74 years old now and, over the years, as phone cameras got better, more sophisticated and, certainly, more convenient, my 5D got set aside for about 8-10 years. I got a bug-in-my-butt recently to start using it again. The batteries, obviously were dead so I ordered some non-OEM batteries and charger on Amazon, replaced the button date/time battery and the camera came back to life! As I mentioned, it's been a LONG time since I've used it, so your video has been invaluable. Thank you again!
Thank you, Rodger!
My neighbor just gave me one because I have been helping her out for the past year due to health issues. Very unique imagery that requires very little post work. Very simple to use but looking forward to the other videos. It came with two lenses, 50mm, 28-200, battery grip.
That's an awesome thank you gift!
Thank you - I've just bought myself a Canon 5D from an old friend for my 2020 Christmas present (as we go into another lockdown in Scotland) and your videos are perfect for starting me off with my first ever DSLR camera! Merry Christmas!
Thank you!
Glad that I've just found out about your channel. I bought a 5D a while ago and I'm still learning how to shoot. Your videos are amazing and very helpful!
Thank you!
Right to the point! I just unboxed mine today, this series will sort me out
Thank you!
Love my 5D! Still going strong.
Nice!
Fantastic way of explaining.
Thank you!
Love these old beasts, learned to shoot manual on this camera!
Nice! This would be a great camera for that; it's very unforgiving compared to current digital cameras.
Lots of valuable information here. I’ve seen many videos on these cameras and most of the people don’t know what they’re talking about. Great video
Thank you!
BTW, I have a HP Windows 10 LapTop and it recognizes my 5D and it will read the video files. Also since my last post, I was able to find the 1.1.1 firmware upgrade and install it. It wasn't easy finding it and there is a little trick to the procedure. The main advantage that I found was that with 1.1.0, my 32GB CF card only had 7.2 GB useable by the camera. Once 1.1.1 was installed, it saw all 30GB. Once again, thank you for the tutorials!
Nice and thank you!
Where did you find the updated software?
I'm not a professional photographer by any means but I can easily say that this camera is still a beast even by today's standards and it all boils down to it's 'Full Frame' capabilities. Previously I was using a Canon EOS Rebel T7 and after I made the switch to this Canon EOS 5D the images that I'm getting out from the 5D using the same exact lens are miles better than what I was getting with my T7. Colours, Bokeh, Details, etc are just way superior to that of my T7.
I'd concur that this camera still holds its weight in 2023, yeah.
Thank you for doing these videos ! I just purchased my camera 5D couple weeks ago! I had a rebel 7, last August 2020, it was stolen out of my Van. I had also just purchased some used lenses. After researching I decided on the 5D and thought I’d kick it up a notch! I am concerned about keeping my camera in a van, However that’s where I’m living now, The only other option would to keep it in Big Box Storage, so what would be the proper temperature, camera bag etc to get keep it working correctly , and keep it!!! It was horrible having the camera stolen grateful to have a Camera again and to get out there shooting soon as possible. It may sound like a dumb question however you are the teacher:) I’d rather ask then have to learn the hard way again!
Thank you
Shay
Honestly, if you can just keep it on you, that's the best bet. Get one lens and stick with it, and just carry it everywhere. Not only will you never need to worry about it being stolen you'll get a lot of great photos you wouldn't get if it were stored somewhere.
@@DavidHancock Very true!! Thank you
Most reviewers say not to use the 5DC over 400 iso but I get very pleasing results at 1600 iso when required
Nice! There is a bias among reviewers to go for low-ISO settings. It's a blindspot that most of us have.
hi David thank you for this video. I'm new to this camera even though I've had it for a few years. What is your opinion on this lens canon zoom lens EF 100-400 mm 1:4.5-5.6 L IS ultrasonic extender EF1.4x I have it but i find it very hard to take good shots because it's so heavy.
Thank you! I would think that's probably a fine lens. I've never used it but the USM lenses tend to be good.
What's your opinion on living at the shore and using this camera for beach shots regularly? Do you think regular exposure to salt air and high humidity will eventually mess up the camera given that its not weather sealed? (Speaking of which, would weather sealing even keep out humidity and salt air?)
Given that these can be had used and fairly cheaply in tends of full frame, I'd go for it. If they l last for the long term, great, but if they fail a new one can be had easily.
I own newer Canon DSLRs that offer awesome modern features.
However, whenever my hand reaches out for a camera from my gear storage cabinet; it always grabs this 16 yr old gem that I purchased two months ago!
:D There's something special about old DSLRs.
Funny, earlier today that I mentioned that I had such a camera, but it is in the closet with all the other cameras that are not used either, but I should. Actually the perfect digi SLR camera and it has forever enough pixels. Is just to be able to use it, and the only EF lens I have is the 24/3.5 T&S. Maybe the best one to that camera?
Nice! Those would be fine lenses. I think even a fast 50 would be fine on these. And yes, 12.5 MP is definitely enough for most of the shooting that most people do.
@@DavidHancock I'm looking for a cheap 35/2.0. I just need one EF AF lens for it. I can use my Nikkor arsenal with an adapter. I'm not worried. One day, I will use it more, and might buy a newer one, a Mk III, but the 5D is enough.
@@DavidHancock I got the 24/3.5 T&S cheap, and I bougt it to use with m43, and if I bought a GFX. I have already the Nikkor 24 TS, but the aperture just work with Nikon cameraes. The last one of those kind of lenses, was a Zuiko 35/2.8 Shift. It will work with the 5D, and m43 with Speedbooster and also GFX. That's the fun thing about those TS lenses and all of them are sharp as .. !
Great video. Where can I find updated firmware?
Thank you! If the final firmware is still available, check the video's description for a link.
Is there a way in setting to control long exposure? Everytime I take a picture even if it’s just a little shady the camera takes forever to take the picture! I have a different lens on the camera could that be why?
Could just be your aperture. If you're in aperture-priority and set the aperture to something like f/16 or f/22, that will give you a very long exposure. Are the images when that happens turning out properly exposed, even if blurry from movement?
@@DavidHancock yes! Exactly that
@@lynae901 got it. Try shooting at f/4 by siding the control dials and see if that helps.
Is there a Camera that has two card slots ?
Many of them do, yes.
Thank you for this video. I thought I broke the camera after taking 5 pictures.
Thank you and I'm glad it helped!
Is full frame??
Yes
Lose the stupid into.
