  • Canon's EOS 5D marked the entry for Canon into the non-professional full frame camera marketplace. The 5D offered advanced photographers and photographers who take occasional paid work an offering that provided full frame image quality in an affordable package. The camera makes a number of compromises, even for the time it was released, with frame rate, buffer size, and build quality. However, today, as a used camera, it provides a very affordable way to learn photography with a straightforward interface and an absences of the frills and features that clutter Canon lower-tier cameras like the Rebel and Kiss cameras. This video series provides a comprehensive guide on how to use this camera including examples of when different features are useful.

    Unbelievable how you are able to make everybody understand the Manual written in Martian language.
    If a Clinical Pharm understands everything than you guys with math background can understand even easier I suppose.

    towards the end when you said a "very solid camera" after the mirror fell off made my day, you toke it like a champ! i have one for several years now and i'm not thinking of changing, it just serves my needs, waiting for my mirror to fall too though... :D

    • @y2ktube
      @y2ktube Год назад

      Video @ 14:00 "waiting for my mirror to fall" - Well a little bit of reinforcement helps to prevent this issue. - Apply a small amount of Clear Nail-Polish to the front edge of the mirror where it makes contact with its frame (Don't get any on the front-surface-mirror; just its edge).
      BTW, Front Surface Mirrors are VERY FRAGILE & easy to damage the reflective coating even with light cleaning; so be EXTRA careful.

    Hi David, very comprehensive review. Got an original 5D 6 years ago, luckily with the mirror modification. Only problem I have with the 5D is dust, the sensor is a dust magnet and doesn't have sensor cleaning on start up and shut down.

      Thank you! For colors and editability, I recommend shipping raw because you can get the compress you want for any image. JPEG color settings can't be removed if the results aren't good.

    Bonjour David from Luxembourg : great videos, very helpfull. Thanks a lot. Just got one a few weeks ago but same kind of problem as you met. A miror came out, it has also a trasparent "sheet" along. How do I place or fix it back again? Thanks

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  3 года назад

      Thank you, Dominique! I used four very tiny drops of Pliobond 25 to hold it in place. I believe silicon glue like B-7000 would also work but I haven't tried it. Do no use super glue.

    Hey David thanks for the great info!!
    Do you know how to shoot tethered with a 5D ? I.e. what combinations of OS and software is needed? I have an old Mac running High Sierra. The Canon support page pretty much just says the model isn't supported any more. Thanks 🙏

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  4 месяца назад

      Thank you for catching that. I'll update the video info. In the meantime, here is a link to some info:
      www.reddit.com/r/canon/comments/j7oxvy/valid_download_link_for_5d_111_firmware/
      In short, Canon no longer hosts the firmware update (because, you know, Canon, that's just how they are and it seems like they deprecate old-product support to direct people to instead buy their new products. Nothing says awesome customer service like planned obsolescence and forcing people into an endless upgrade cycle...) Anyway, personal commentary aside, there are two options to download, a Web Archive link and an EOSCard link. I, personally, would not run an executable file that does not come from a known and trusted source. I don't know anything about EOSCard, but Web Archive has always struck me as a trustworthy source. That said, I cannot actually recommend downloading firmware from any source except the manufacturer directly.

    There must be different versions of the 5D because mine only has L and no Raw

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  7 месяцев назад

      There's a setting that enables raw. I forget what it is, but I think it's covered somewhere in here.

    Hi David ! Can u let me know pls which lens would you buy for a Nikon D700 if you were me : Nikkor 24mm AI or 24mm AI-s and why. Thank you ! Vedran

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  Год назад +1

      Hi, Vedran, the difference really is autofocus. I haven't used either lens so I can't speak to them directly, but they're likely very similar in performance with the exception of the autofocus capability in the AI-S.

    Hello David,
    cool Video! how can you change copyright info in 5D?

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  3 года назад +1

      That's a mess anymore. You need the Canon Utilities software (on a CD that was shipped with these) AND the Canon Firewire cable. I'm uncertain if the software runs on Windows 10.

      @@zmanagadze Hi, I found a way to do it. You will need a Windows XP 32 bit virtual machine. The EOS Utility software on 5D Classic page is broken so I used the 20D's software. Since they only give you the update tool you will need to crack it in order to install it without the original CD. It took really long but I can explain it more detailed if you are interested.

      @@zmanagadze I will write through here so other people who are wondering can get help too :)
      1. Setting up a Windows XP 32 bit machine via VirtualBox is explained online so I will not mention that, you need to simply download a 32 bit XP iso file then follow the steps in VirtualBox.
      2. After getting XP running you will transfer the 5D WIA Driver file and set it. www.canon-europe.com/support/consumer_products/products/cameras/digital_slr/eos_5d.html?type=drivers&language=en&os=windows%20xp%20(32-bit)
      About the transfer of files to your virtual machine there is a video: ruclips.net/video/7iEQ9KQOTCo/видео.html
      3. The main problem is, as I explained the canon eos utility software is badly written so it causes many problems. I will give the link to 20D software since it was the one worked for me. www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/support/details/cameras/support-dslr/eos-20d/eos-20d?subtab=downloads-software
      If you try to install it alone you will face with a error message saying the disk is not there. Thankfully this guy made the program to fix it: dascomputerconsultants.com/CanonEOSSoftwareInstall.htm (install 32 bit version)
      4. After installing the EOS Utility you will need to add your camera as a USB device to your virtual machine. Don't forget to pick [PC connection] setting on your camera
      www.wikihow.tech/Connect-a-USB-to-Virtualbox
      5. The rest is explained here: ruclips.net/video/Ed2iilWD11M/видео.html
      This is all there is to say hope it helps.
