  • The Canon 5d classic is a reliable camera, but you need to make sure that you have checked a few things before you buy one. I have been using the 5D classic for over fifteen years and know the camera really well. This video will help you check for a few major problems you may find.

Richard, thanks for these videos and hope to see more regarding this gem. So my 5D is an early serial number but luckily had the mirror reinforcement done prior to my owning it. I am curious though and having some "FOMO" regarding the improved LCD on the later serial number models. hello. i am considering a 5d1 or 5d2 and ask your advice.
i intend to use for stills only using exclusively legacy film era manual primes.
I have not used canon before so unfamiliar with the initial setup with these lenses.
please point me to a good source with setup advice.
Auto iso on 5d2 seems a nice idea whihc may work well for manual primes.
Could you also advise how to set up either for manual primes, would that be aperture priority presumably.
this info useful before i take the plunge and purchase a body.
    thank you.

I'm kinda mad for getting one but haven't found yet. However, one issue came up that concerns me. On some copies, the mirror is reported to be coming off! Granted, it may be reinstalled but then, perhaps it will need recalibration for AF purpose. And this is a task only Canon dealers can do. Again unsure whether the current technicians serving with those dealers are capable of doing so!

enjoy and appreciate your videos, thank you for taking the time. just curious... i bought a 5d brand new in '05, it has a serial # that starts w/a zero, and it still has the original mirror held in place by the original glue. i'm not what you'd call a high volume shooter, but my 5d has taken many 1000's of photos in the 17 years it's been with me. do you suppose i just haven't put quite enough miles on it yet, or have you heard of or run across any older 5d's that didn't have the mirror problem? thank you.

Hi Richard, I bought 5D I 2 days ago, still learning the camera since I am new to Canon. I like the simplicity of the Menu and quality of the photos I am getting from the camera. My question is about Firmware, how important it is to upgrade the firmware. I have 1.0.1. I can't find new firmware for 5D Mark i, Canon site says that it is not available any longer. Do you think it is important to upgrade or I should not worry about it? The camera seems to work fine. And if i need to upgrade, do you know where I can get the latest version? Thank you very much, really enjoying your videos and appreciate your experience.

I bought one of these back in 2015, and to Canon's credit, they extended a special warranty for the mirror falling off until 10 years after the release date, so I was able to get mine repaired completely free of charge (the mirror had actually fallen off something like a few weeks until the warranty deadline!).
Unfortunately, since then, the autofocus has developed a pretty bad front-focusing issue, and it seems to be a pretty common problem either back or front focusing; it's important to note that this model never got a AFMA function, so I'm currently in the process of researching how to adjust the mirror. I don't really have anything to lose at this point.

The rubber flap broke me too. Unfortunately I could not find the original canon spare part, so I got it on the Chinese "oem" ebay. Once the lid has been disassembled and the rubber pads inserted, when closing it they come out of the housings, furthermore the piece is very badly worked and does not fit together. I partially solved it by scraping a bit of rubber and at least leaves the contacts and holes covered, but obviously, as you open a flap it all comes off .... I don't think canon has a spare. What do you think? However, apart from the dry and broken rubber of the flash and USB ports, the machine is practically new, zero scratches, sensor clean and mirror glued well. The images it produces are nothing short of spectacular, contrasted and razor sharp, even more than the 5d mk4, and it has only 12mpx !! Surely the merit is of the very large pixels compared to modern sensors which are more dense.

I just picked my two 5ds out of the cabinet where I keep them to find the rubber on both of them has started to dissolve (becoming sticky and rubbing off on my hands). I thought of your channel and thought I'd ask you if you had any experience with preserving or saving/removing old rubber parts on the 5d? Or, for that matter, how much replacing the mode dial would be?
Dissolving rubber since to be a common problem for slightly older electronics (I've had it happen to a computer mouse once, so I chucked it) but I don't want to have to chuck my cameras for this reason...

They can have a shutter fault, whereby the shutter doesn't always open fully, or at all, at 1/8000th of a second. Some don't fully open at slower speeds , e.g. 1/1000th, the first time you release the shutter after the camera has stood unused for a few days, but they work fine after the initial shutter actuation.

@@dominic5872 Hi.. when my 5D's mirror fell off, I was in the middle of photographing a wedding. So, I took out the mirror, and keep on shooting. The camera was fine. I was able to took some photos like nothing happened.
The only downside.... it was so hard to compose a picture. Only a small part of the viewfinder was usable. Like 25% of it. Could be less.
So it was like, sort of keep on "guessing & shooting".
After that event, I put the Mirror back with a double sided tape. Just for ur information, it is still holding strong and firmly, as today (12 January 2022)
I hope you are able to find replacement mirror or jerry rig it with some sort of aclyric mirror. LOL. (sorry my English isn't so good.. cheers from Indonesia)

i disagree with your first point, I just picked up a 5d mkii for 100e, 150k shutter count...I would rather have a high count pro use camera that fired a lot early, than a high count thats been used sporadically, reason..the lubrication and parts can cope, there are 5d's out there with 2.2 million on the count, but a low count has sat around for years. Like a high millage classic car, its better if its used than parked up for decades.

I was not aware of this problem with the 5D. I recently purchased a 5D classic. I hope the one I purchased does not have this problem.

I loved mine UNTIL my mirror fell out in the middle of a wedding some years back, after that, I felt I could not trust it for paid assignments again.
I currently use a newer model of 5D and never had a problem with this, actually, I never had problems with any earlier models either (including film)... my only disaster was the using a 5D classic, but thankfully I had a backup body to fall back on.

never owned one - 5d is a low price now for a professional dslr, you will need to invest in a good lens

If youre considering both, Buy this before you get a 7d. The 5d makes nicer images overall, but the 7d makes a great B camera, should you ever need faster autofocus, higher fps, video function etc. It's also weather sealed. Unless you're pushing the files heavily, clients would be very happy with images from both cameras, they share a look which is more pastel and pleasant on skin than today's cams. 7D looks it's best on standard profile, 5d looks best on neutral.

The mirror can fall out on any Canon 5D Mark I. The cameras with the serial numbers 0XXXX0XXXX have a sensor that should not be cleaned with isopropanol.
