In this video I build and paint a diorama of a WWII warship getting attacked by a Warhammer40K demon. I go through some scale modelling and table top gaming painting techniques as well as some water effect techniques. Working with epoxy and UV resin.

Wow, just wow
This kind of content is why I'm a proud Patreon supporter of this channel! How else would he be able to afford all that varnish!
...I hear he solemnly intones individual patrons names in between varnish coats - though by "I heard " I may just mean "i just made it up/hallucinated it after a long day"...
Thank you Martin! I now have 7 different varnishes but I'm desperate for more
Part of "god tier" - "I'm now spraying this miniature with a layer of Cobby".
The little disgruntled gentleman in the ocean is my favorite part of this fantastic build.
Thanks R!
Any time I need to motivate myself to finish a painting task, I throw on one of your videos. Thank you for the constant inspiration! Beautiful work as always.
Thank you humbly M, I appreciate you letting me know.
I was going to say the same. Whenever I’m in a hobby rut, I put on one of Alex’s videos and immediately get inspired.
Dude.
That thumbnail goes hard. this whole project is real strong style!
🐸😍
Thanks mate, and it’s not even got the hand holding a brush in it! - seriously, I appreciate it. It was a long build, but all fun steps to alternate between.
I’m not sure how you do it Alex, but you thoroughly captivate me and time just disappeared. You manage to grab and hold my attention more thoroughly in 30 minutes than most 8-10 minute videos do. Must be the insane production value, the fantastic storytelling and going through the experimental journey with you.
I really appreciate you letting me know Bill. It's what I hope to do, but I also know that a lot people don't watch long videos. So it's great to hear you enjoyed yourself.
Your journey with the resin made think about how much work went into the “Best of Show” winner of this year’s Scale Model Challenge by Per Olav Lund. If you’re unfamiliar with his piece, definitely check it. It blew my mind with the shear ammount of story that’s packed into a moment in time.
12:05 would not have minded seeing the whole tape removing scene. They can be so satisfying.
Always loved the story of that raid. Would make a great movie. Anyway, smashing diorama. You continue to raise the bar.
There is a movie on the raid, it was made in black and white , Raid on St Nazaire and Gift Horse made in 1952 is based on the raid also . You can find more detail on Google.
Thank you as always C! The raid would indeed make a great movie. I think there was a film "inspired by real events" made in the 50-s.
I think this is some of your highest quality work yet. The movement in the water, it’s realistic effect and the drama of the piece as a whole. Excellent.
Thank you humbly HS! I see room for improvement with the resin, utilizing the pour more, getting more stuff in the water… but one thing at a time :)
Fantastic! Your process is one I enjoy you're not asking "what will it look like?" But rather "why not give it a try?" Which is a great way of doing something like this. There were lessons learned but in the end it looked amazing I'm sure it was worth the effort and lessons. Always happy to see a new video Alex I learn a little something each time one of which is: if you're going to try something, just go for it. :) great video
Thank you Ovan, I'm glad to hear this because this is one of the reasons I make these videos. I hope to highlight the journey as much as anything.
Wow. I had no idea from the thumbnail that this would be so big! Honestly, the final version of this with how detailed and amazing it looks does look like it would take a month to make. Well done, sir! Absolutely gorgeous.
Glad you like it, thank you Magnus
incredible job. I'm glad you did a heat glow on his hammer and vents. Can't wait to see the next.
Thank you very much!
So nice I wish I could like it twice. I loved the lore segment.
Thank you Justin!
I also wasn't able to like it twice. So I watched it, er.. thrice... Cheers!
A video with accurate historical content, cool ideas, to get a nice and original diorama? You have my like and all my respect, as always!
Thank you as always K!
@@52Miniatures Well, I find almost all your recent video very original and inspirational, with the right amount of showing the miniature, breaking down facts and techniques in a calm and clear way. It gives me ideas and orientation that I didn't consider before. So, it's a pleasure.
"Staring into the lost ark" I just spat my drink out laughing! It was a Whiskey as well! Such a terrible waste of whisky, OK Maybe not, its a good reference/Joke. My Keyboard might never recover.
I'm sorry about the whiskey but glad to hear about the effect! :)
This is my favourite piece you have shown on RUclips. Tremendous work and a very enjoyable watch as always.
Thank you! Please tell everyone because the video is just kind of barley floating along compared to making a huge splash.
Modelling guide (in two separate styles!) AND history lesson. That's perfect. Thanks Alex!
10:21 when a 2-part resin is curing, you can cover with something like a box to prevent dust floating into you pour an sticking to the surface.
Very good point, I did this but did not show it.
I was on the edge of my seat for this entire video... Congratulations on this fantastic project! And extra points for the Blake&Mortimer reference 🙂
Thank you PJ, great to hear.
Loved the water effects
In the youtube hobby world this vid takes the Oscar in eleven categories across presenting, writing and technical categories and more than that is a sincere adventure in model making and presentation from a gifted, thoughtful, hobby adventurer.
What a joy to watch
It also touched my heart directly, I've known Alex through his Patreon and discord for a couple of years now, but what he doesn't know is that my beloved childhood hero, my wonderful, loving grandad was a commando in the boats that followed the Campbeltown in at St Nazaire. (Yes, I am borderline elderly lol)
He was also one of the few that fought his way back out and survived the return.
So there you have it, lovely models made spectacular, another wonderful vid, and the loving bear of a family man that came home from St Nazaire and all the other brutal engagements to teach his infant grandson that a man's job, his value is to work for and protect those he loves, all else is just hobby 🙂
I've not replied to this comment Phil because I've been processing it. Thank you for sharing the story and the history. What a great coincidence.
@52Miniatures Thankyou Alex, so much for a gentle reminder of my beloved Grandad's life as he lived it. He left behind his peace of mind in 1942 and never escaped the nightmares, but still managed to be an awesome loving figure in my life and my benchmark for being a man.
This was also a magnificent vid in so many ways and that's not hyperbole, it's just plain true. Please keep making the best vids you know how, and we'll find a way to support you when the utterly stupid algorithm doesn't
@@philgee486 Thank you Phil!
Alex, Yes please, build another warship diorama (some day) with a dry dock in it. As always you combine a brilliant narrative with an innovative approach, a wonderful crossover melding military model building and fantasy sci fi. I suppose I could carp and say that I'd rather see the good guys (that would be the ship and intrepid crew) defeat Vashtorr, but for dramatic purposes you nailed it --again. As a minority of one _ my favorite part of this build and video were the clips showing the little crew; I know they're just supporting players in this drama, but well done, well done. Cheers!
They where indeed a tiny crew Mark. I'm afraid they did not get proper attention in the video even though I spent quite some time on them. Thanks as always.
@@52Miniatures In the overall scheme of things, I think a proper showing... the shock of seeing how small they are and then a glimpse of you dealing with all that flash, plus the humor of a crewman in the water, were just right!
The finished piece is amazing. Every wave looks so carefully placed, lovely composition of the diorama
Thank you Andrew!
Very cool Alex! Imaginative and creative in a destructive sort of way 😁 Thanks again for sharing.
Thank you ToG! Sawing that model in half felt a bit weird.
This looks amazing Alex! I also love some alternate history fiction, especially WW2 based ones. My favourites are games like the recent Wolfenstein releases or the Resistance series. I can picture the German forces making some sort of dark pack with Vashtorr to ruin the plan to blow up the dry dock
Hah! Yeah. "sooo... could you possibly just go jump a bit on that ship. there will be plenty of sourkraut in it for you".
I'm getting serious Neon Genesis Evangelion vibes from the diorama. The demon is a great replacement for a biomechanical mecha! Excellent work as always!
Literally came here to say this. Eva unit 2 just jumping on aircraft carriers going ape shit on one of the angels.
Same here, quite a nice vibe to have none the less.
Thank you! Yeah, I've been getting a few saying this and now I know more about Evangelion, so thanks :)
The trick of using blister packaging for some of the water effects is brilliant. Fantastic diorama.
Thanks Ion! Yeah, it works great as a transparent armature.
love the way you painted vashtor, also the entire scene reminds me of one episode of Evangelion so props to you
I've been getting a few comments with the same thoughts, and so now I know more about Evangelion. Thanks you :)
I always like the mashup of different scales. I have these pencils at home and had until now not many ideas how to use them in miniature painting. But to use them as filters seems a very good idea.
Same here, I had some around but never got to using them. Ninjon reminded me with his video and I enjoyed how they worked out.
I doubt I'll ever attempt something like this, but it was fun to watch you do it. I think the water effects turned out really nice.
I doubt I will do it again, but it was fun watching me do it :) Thanks Chad!
10:38 I also noticed that natural oils from my fingers can prevent (especially airbrush) primers from sticking to the surface.
My favorites are when you mix historicals with sci-fi or fantasy, keep them coming!
Great to hear, thanks D!!
I love the green armor--I want to try out that color scheme myself.
Thanks! It worked out as a good contrast in the grand scheme :)
The saint naziar dry dock was was the only pne capable of repairing the battle ship Terpitz, that is why this extreme was carried out .
I recommend Drachinifel to anyone who has any interest in navel history.
those ak interactive pencils look like watercolor pencils, i've used derwent forever and they are so cool
You really do some fantastic creative dioramas that are just out of this world!!! 😊
Thank you very much Marty!
@@52Miniatures no thank you!! Watching your videos has inspired me and made me try and create things i never thought i could do!!
If i never had watched you i would not have had the confidence to come up with the idea of creating my wife’s Harry Potter Huffle puff themed space marine chapter!!

You're the second person from across the pond I've heard say "washing-up fluid".
Nice work, by the way!
Great video, you’re one of the most thoughtful crafters out there. Love it every time!
Thanks so much Gokou 😊
Your content is absolutely phenomenal because of many things. Your adventure into trying to comprehend your imagination is inspiring. I think you have captured that very well in all your offerings of creations here in RUclips. Keep up the inspiring work. With an endless imagination your fun will never end. That’s what keeps me going -imagination &fun
Thank you humbly for this great comment. I appreciate it 🙏
Definitely think you’re a man who appreciates a good kraken

Great video , brilliant story telling as always. Love the blend of history with an imaginary demon, love to see I'm not the only TinTin fan not in school 😅😅. Roll on your next project cant wait you rock.
Thanks Isi! I appreciate it. My son is a Tinitin believer, and it might have come from me... :)
Brilliant Alex. Really love these mashups! Very cool indeed!
Thanks as always! I had good fun with this build :)
Great video, great diorama. Love the juxtaposition of the scale, colour palette, paint medium, universe, etc. Really striking!
Thank you very much D!
That build looks fantastic!!!
Amazing diorama, very striking!
Absolutely incredible. You went all out on the water effects. Worth every pour. To the last drop. 💪
Thanks A! I'm glad to hear you think this.
Vashtorr: ""Let us return to your warship, Abaddon Warmaster. I feel your curiosity, your blade-sharp need to understand, and it empowers me. Yet there are words that must pass between us in secret. Trust me for but a few short hours more, and in return I will give you the Key to unlock final and absolute victory."
"Sam" Beattie: "Oh. Ye can keep the ship, mate. Ye'll find it verily empowering in a few hours. Just hold it tight to yer chest, like yer secrets." (Sets the delayed fuse going.)
3 Commando drawing their Sykes: "Can we poke him?"
Great crossover, Alex. Glad to see a flush-decker making it into the 40k realm.
Cheers.
Thank you TMU! For a very specialized channel I could probably keep generating dioramas with this ship forever, I really like how it looks.
That's amazing!! Absolutely love it.
Thank you so much!
Looks gorgeous..... the final product is definitely worth it :)
Thank you 🙏
looks amazing
Incredible work as always Alex; love to see this mashup of styles
Thank you, I appreciate it.
Now I want to see a diorama of a giant Lemmy ripping apart a WW2 era warship...
By force of distorted bass
what a brilliantly bonkers diorama, great job! Althought I think it would have been improved with more varnish
Spectacular, it didn't dissapoint 🔥🔥🔥
Thank you humbly

Thanks as always Mark!
Very nice!
Great crossover between fantasy and historical subjects.
Thank you Dana!
it does look very cool! great looking diorama!
Thank you Dean
Absolutely brilliant as ever. I wonder if that splash gel could be used as an alternative for Modge Podge for river surfaces, and also if you can use regular watercolour pencil (with a varnish layer to fix them) for a similar effect to the AK ones?
Thanks Adrian! It's a good combo. First doing mod podge, then splash gell. I guess it's all about what effect we are striving for. Mod podge makes nice ripples. Splash gel is a little more "violent". On the other hand, I did try watering down splash gel with a little water, creating a smoother fluid. That came pretty close to mod podge territory. The slash gel stays a little "rubbery" and probably is not a tough... so for a diorama thing the splash gel works but maybe on a base or in wargaming terrain the utter solid hard curing mod podge is better.
@@52MiniaturesThanks for the reply Alex, that makes a lot of sense.
this is pretty cool my friend
Thanks as always Matt! I appreciate it
I feel Lemmy would approve!
Only if there was the sound of bomber warning sirens during the entire video. Thanks man!
@@52Miniatures He was an avid collector on Militarium, he'd dig this!
Great work again
Thanks again!
Wave Alex~!
Missed you!
Amazing work as always, the ship really cam out well, and the deamon is great.
Like the water effects on the ship's hull.
May I ask what do you do with all these creations?
Thank you Lee! Most of these end up in a cupboard. I have one at home on display, the dreadnought / wwII build. I had some on display at Alphaspel gamestore but they seem to have lost interest. My builds are kind of pushed in at the back of a lower shelf and they have removed the "name tag", so I'm going to take those home again at some point.
Cool project!
Thanks!
Riktigt bra jobbat!
Tack!
Your best piece till date? I would say so. 😍
Thank you Humbly W!
Thank you too Marleen
I actually think not having a sea floor was a good idea, would be kinda weird if the water was that shallow I think...
That was my thinking too. I just think it looks a bit empty down there.
This was a great video, I like the varying paint styles between vashtor and the ship to highlight the clash of universes. Did you completely and definitively calculate the wing velocity of a fully laden vashtor? No, but then he doesn't have wings and that's not the point, but sometimes we are doomed to be called some kind of name by some easily triggered internet fellow. At least no one called you a tourist this time? (sorry I've probably jinxed it)
Very little scientific data was involved. It was surprisingly difficult to find reliable sources on deamon velocity vs early 1900's hull structure. I'm sure this is a line of enquiry completely looked over by science departments globally and should be remedied! What's that CERN thing there for in the first place if not for important work like this?
@@52Miniatures "no scientific data and/or fluid model analysis was harmed in the making of this demon fighting warship diorama..."
Hahaha Lost Ark reference really tickled me 🤣
I'm meeeeelting!
Looks awesome dude but the only thing that it’s missing is smoke from the ship
And the flag! I forgot the bl...dy flag.
Dude I didn’t even notice that part still looks awsome
„Historical water is more like Prussian blue“ 😂 true
Hah! It is though.
Thanks!
Thank you dearly Emily, I hope you are doing well.
What’s the difference between those AK pencils and a regular watercolour pencil?
It's a good question. I don't know what they put in their pencils. If its was based or grease based. I do plan on getting an assortment of pencils from an art store to compare.

green metal detailed instructions pretty please?
AK Intermediate Green watered down and stippled on with a sponge on a black base coat. Sort of 70% (ish) of the surface concentrating on where there would be highlights. "Washing" that with a very thinned down Anthracite Gray from Scale75. Trying to push the glaze into the "shaded areas" covering the black that is left. Going back with fresh layer of the first green on 40% of the areas facing upwards and that I want highlighted (like edges). Then edge highlighted with Fall Green Scale75
