    You know I just realized that each of Kiryu's ancestors and himself included were forced to give up their identities. Musashi Miyamoto became Kazumanosuke Kiryuu. Ryoma Sakamoto became Saito Hajime. And Kazuma Kiryu became Taichi Suzuki to "Agent Joryu" back to Taichi Suzuki. I guess its their destiny to always help others and be selfless. Willing to always put others before him. Stories of Legendary Dragons.

    I think my favourite part about all of this is how well each part actually EXPRESSES something.
    Sworn Enemies has a lingering sense of danger, but despite that, you only feel regretful. Kiryu is taking down his past pride here, and he is quite literally looking at a personification of the power Yakuza held in his past. And now, he's playing the role of tearing himself away from his dream for a reason.
    Deadly Struggle is absolutely brimming with fury. Almost every single section sounds like it's rumbling with a violent intensity, just like Shishido. He wants to kill you, and yet still, the violin from Sworn Enemies is baked into the song. Underneath everything is still the lingering truth both Kiryu and Shishido know: the yakuza are done.
    Fleeting Dream is the beautiful ending. It's the sunset in the most literal sense possible. Finally, both Shishido and Kiryu are closing in on facing reality, and to support it, the electric guitar plays to invoke this feeling of nostalgia, but also peace. You, the player, get to think back at how many times you've experienced this as Kiryu. How many times you faced an honorable foe head-on, how many times you've watched a life end from Kiryu's eyes. This is now the ending for Kiryu's story of the Yakuza, and Shishido's too. The story comes to a close, even if you didn't want it to.

    This opening cutscene to the fight is so dramatically different from anything else in the whole series. We caught glimpses of it in Y6, but it was something that is just surface level: Kiryu's tired because he's been forced to take a beating.
    LAD: Gaiden is different. The framing of both Shishido and Kiryu as being beaten, broken, and bloody in the heart of what is effectively a dead kingdom is perfect. They're absolutely exhausted, and around them the liminal space of a throne room is hollow and devoid of purpose. There's nothing left to fight for. Even if Shishido secures his victory, the Omi is still going to be eviscerated with the looming crackdown on organized crime, but if Shishido accepts that then he's just going to fall through the cracks of society, and he knows it. This crumbling throne is all he has left. He simply can't let it be for nothing. Kiryu shattering the heraldry of the Omi with Shishido's bulk is great symbolism.
    In the same fashion, this is Kiryu cementing his legacy; the inheritor to a cancer that has been the death knell of the Tojo ever since the very first game, and giving a life he's always known a respectful end rather than a violent one is acknowledgement of how that life has been and always will be so important to him. The irony isn't lost on me at all with the reveal that Kiryu has cancer for Y8's story trailer in light of LAD: Gaiden. His word choice is perfect for the scene as well: passing on a learned wisdom to someone else while also acknowledging the dragon ravaged the kingdom to ruin.
    It ends the only way it should. Two souls in opposition speaking in the only language they know how: their fists. A dragonslayer with a sword to protect a dead kingdom, and the ancient dragon accepting an inevitable fate.

    • @zura8879
      @zura8879 7 месяцев назад +88

      The way the OST changes to "Fleeting Dream" in the last phase is also some amazing symbolism. Much like with Aizawa, Kiryu was slowly pushing Shishido further and further away from the throne room, which also symbolically highlights how Shishido was getting further and further away from his dream, until he was outside and too far away from it. And Fleeting Dream, unlike "Deadly Struggle" or any of the other sad final boss themes (Nishiki and Ryuji's) also sounds sad but not in a "this sucks" way. Instead it perfectly captures a nostalgic kind of sadness, the true end of an era as Kiryu is about to finish off the last remnants of a bygone era.
      I'm so happy Gaiden exist because it gives us a very important perspective on the dissolution that Ichiban & Co simply could never show us. This might well be one of *the* best final sections in the series, it's just chock full of fanservice and symbolism telling us the end of the old era of Yakuza, and the beginning of a new era.

    This fight, man.
    This is just basically a rehash of the Aizawa fight at the end of 5, but with much higher emotional stakes. Aizawa was fighting just so he could prove to the world that he was capable of becoming a legend himself, but Shishido has nothing left to lose and is just a wild, cornered animal fighting to the very end. He had to struggle for everything to get to this stage in his life. The Yakuza is everything to him, he finally had a chance to take it all, and now Kiryu and the others want to take that away from under him?
    Deadly Struggle is probably one of the most aggressive and violent tracks in the whole of the series, because it represents that a raging, wild animal is going up against an immovable object, and neither one is going to just give up easily.
    And when you take the battle outside finally, the soundtrack becomes far more sombre. The sun is setting on the afternoon, but it's setting on the Omi Alliance itself. All that's left is to put Shishido down once and for all, in the only way he understands. And the image of Kiryu finally winning by just punching Shishido off of the building with the force of a freight train is one that's going to stick with me for a long time. Kiryu put everything he had into that last punch.

    • @aerodynamo4874
      @aerodynamo4874 6 месяцев назад +28

      Someone said somewhere else that Kiryu stuck true to the words he said in the fight against the limping Omis. Not once does Kiryu try and directly dodge Shishido's attacks. No matter what, he always counters his attacks with such a full display of force it would literally send someone flying.
      Before the battles in the sunset, Kiryu tells Daigo that Shishido's old school. Many other yakuza included, they will not give up and accept losing their livelihood without being given everything and giving it their all themselves. So that's what Kiryu does above all else against Shishido. He does not falter. He does not cower. But he will show Shishido that his best won't beat *him.* He *will* show him that the sun is setting on the dream they fought for. And that's just damn poetic.
      God, what a great ending man.

    What gaiden has done in the last chapter is nothing short of masterful. Sure the story is a bit clunky and "nonsensical" but that's the magic of Like a Dragon/Judgement franchise where it knows when to be serious and when to be funny. It lays out a finality and give weights that the days of the Yakuza has ended that Kiryu had known for all his life that LaD7 can't give. And Shishido being one of the best antagonist that RGG has done from him being a old school yakuza in his fallen kingdom and grasping at whatever's left of the omi that is the empty throne and a fun character to fight/fight along with.

    The thing about this fight and Kiryu in general that it basically exposes Kiryu for who he really is. This man is really Yakuza to the core. He lowkey enjoyed being back into the Yakuza limelight to throw hands and be the baddest motherfucker around. Its almost an addiction and its the reason why he would help the Tojo Clan for the majority of his saga. Buts not until 5 where it starts to not being a good thing. He can longer feed the addiction he has because now his kids are growing up into young adults. 5 is literally the only game he is forced to come back. 2, 3 (kinda) & 4 he involved himself into Yakuza business.
    By 6 he is really guilt ridden. He spent the last decades of trying to be a father and his "duties"/honor ties to the Yakuza, he was emotionally finished of putting his loved ones at risk but he makes a stupid decision to become forgotten but its never easy because the life he thought he put behind followed him back into his grave to revive him and Gaiden and Infinite Wealth is set in stone.

      He was there to be the other side of a coin. He was trying to reject his father, while taking it all. Meanwhile, Haruka embraced hers, giving everything up.
      Shishido is a cornered animal. A guardian of bygone dreams and ideals. Different from Aizawa, he was a man with purpose.

I believe saejima said it best... this clan is the only proof people like us exist... kiryu wants to be erased. A struggle indeed: Between the dreams of the Yakuza and the dream of an elite that rose to the to top (0:32 even for a minute) and decided with the other elites to tear it all down because "Those who are struggling just to get through their daily lives....The dreams of the yakuza don't mean a damn thing." (1:49) sounds very childish coming from the near 60+ Kiryu not to elaborate further when they all just witnessed the dissolution. This was also during the time of the anti-Yakuza laws being passed by the then Ryo Aoki. At the time, Shishido couldn't have known that Watase+Daigo was going to form a security company so the former yakuza can find legitimate jobs in Y7, and so it makes the boss music here a bit meaningful. Shishido barely became a family Lieutenant. We know from past games that it takes a lot of blood to rise up the ranks, especially in the Watase Family of all places....

    • @GreekArmyVeteran95
      @GreekArmyVeteran95 7 месяцев назад +9

      Indeed. But Kiryu just does not give a fuck anymore about the Yakuza and thus he cannot be arsed to give an answer to Shishido. He could have indeed told him the truth that the Japanese government were cracking down on the Yakuza and that the Yakuza laws would enslave the Yakuza no matter who sat on the throne, and that the general public would not care at all. But he gave an insulting answer to Shishido instead of the truth. Why offend Shishido? He wanted to beat the shit out of Shishido himself. He wanted to fight.

    • @VeraVemaVena
      @VeraVemaVena 7 месяцев назад +12

      I'm pretty sure Shishido did know about the laws on Yakuza, just not the security company part. He would rather be a slave to the government than leave the Yakuza.

    • @shadowtoad95
      @shadowtoad95 7 месяцев назад +16

      I think Kiryu is talking about how the idea of the "Yakuza Dream" is no longer palatable for modern society, given that it crushes everything in its path, especially the innocent. Kiryu has been out of the Yakuza for so long that he knows what is like to struggle against Yakuza that target even the most innocent, considering he keeps getting roped into situations that made him and his friends and family worse off. Hence, this dissolution of the two main Yakuza clans is meant to end the cycle, by fighting against a person that does not see the "catch" of his dream.

    • @Casshio
      @Casshio 6 месяцев назад +5

      No. He knew about what's coming. And he knew about the Yakuza safety net too. Watase mentioned it in front of him.

    I've seen a number of comments comparing this to the Aizawa fight and honestly I don't see it. For one thing, Shishido gets twice as much characterization as Aizawa ever did, in a game that's half the length; Aizawa even lampshades it at the end of Y5, admitting he has no idea why he's even there when you confront him in Tojo HQ (not that I think that was the intent per se, but that's how it reads to me).

    • @themoneyguy6163
      @themoneyguy6163 3 дня назад +1

      I don’t think they’re comparing the characters to each other, it’s more about the fight itself they’re comparing. Aizawa wanted to prove himself, and Shishido wanted to latch onto the yakuza and fight to keep it kicking, the yakuza was his everything. The way Aizawa and Shishido fight Kiryu through the building until they eventually make it outside is similar though, and I think that’s what people mean when they compare them.
