  • Armored Core 6 is out, and From Software "fans" are not happy. This game has been a colossal filter for the "press circle to win" crowd. I like the game, but it is too simplistic and the difficulty is very inconsistent.

Evidently, a lot of people do not watch the video before commenting. The title is just a meme, guys. I literally said it's not a 6/10 0:30 in. Maybe not a clever joke, but it made me laugh.
Realistically, I'd give it a 7. A solid game, nothing too impressive but I had a good time.

I thought it was funny that, when announced, so many From fanboys and youtubers were trying to draw direct comparisons between AC6 and the Souls games.
It got so obnoxious that during an interview one of the devs had to remind people that AC was an established series that existed before those games.
It should have come as no shock to anyone with a working brain that AC6 would instead be more like other AC titles.

They made some pretty regressive choices for this installment, IMO. Between the hard boundary walls, no mercenary system to sortie in multiplayer, no S rank mode or unlockable S rank weaponry, only one hand equips a melee and the bosses handle like an MMO raid boss. Reposition, line up, big attack. And that restart system still bothers me greatly.
It's great, but we do actually expect more from an AC title. It's a good reboot, super fun to play, but much more simplified and boiled down. Here's to hoping it's just a reboot before we get Armored Core Vindication (or something else starting in VI)

I personally think the game is perfect but then again, this is the first ACTUAL AC title I’ve ever played. I played this fan game called HAMMER but never any official AC titles before AC6. I think the reason a lot of these features were removed is because making this title more casual than previous titles will make it a ton more easy to get new players into the franchise, especially those completely unfamiliar with AC as a whole. I believe they’re going to bring back some of the core aspects of the original games to make it more difficult with the next release, especially things like going into debt since that’s actually something I was hoping was going to be in AC6 when I first heard about the concept of debt in AC. S rank modes and Weaponry also sound amazing. Perhaps they’ll even add exclusive S rank unlock-able parts like generators, or thrusters? (Also I’m praying the next game involves NEXTS.)

People hype up Fromsoft as being "teh based filter devs, who NEVER caves in for the normies", but they definitely casualize their games. Besides i-frames getting more and more forgiving in every Souls title, this has to be one of the easier Armored Cores, besides maybe 4. Repair kits, quick turns, hard locks, staggers, no debt system, ridiciously high payouts for missions, etc. it definitely doesn't have that simulator feeling the older games had. It's funny that the complaints from non-fans is that the game should be MORE anime-like, specifically MORE like Zone of the Enders, when to me that's what's holding this back from being a better Armored Core game. You mentioned that the tank build was your favorite, specifically because there was actual weight, there was an actual sense of scale when you were playing it, when that's how you always felt in the older games, especially gen 1-3, and even 5. People shit on the old controls, but it conveyed the feeling that you were in a giant, clunky mech perfectly.
Still I think the game's fun anyways, you are an anime mech afterall, and I'm not gonna pretend that isn't a cool feeling, as well, and it's probably a moot point arguing this, since the specific feeling I want in the games haven't been in the series since 2005. And it's nice that after all the Souls shit they added to the game, some of the things that make normals seethe the most are classic AC shit, like the emphasis on build types and the mission structure lol.

My impression is that they didn't want to risk too much when they made this game so it's a medium sized project they did to test the waters, smaller than their other ones. If it sticks then we'll see more of it and with a bigger budget, if it doesn't we'll get another one in a decade similar to this.

It's a similar case with Bandai Namco's earlier Ace Combat 7. After nearly a decade of a dormant franchise, they risked another entry that went back to the series' roots, and it was very successful. Gives me hopes that Ace Combat 8 will be even better, hopefully closer to Ace 5 or Zero in terms of sheer balls-to-the-wall crazy scifi concepts and mission design. Ace 7 felt a bit tamer, more like Ace 4, still good, but lacking that certain something that the latter PS2 games had.

  • @ebookjapan8054
    @ebookjapan8054 10 месяцев назад +54

I didn't like the reliance on the stagger meter personally, the games already devolved into dual shotguns and grenade launchers. Stagger is actually just a universal translation of the Heat mechanic in the past entries where taking too much damage from specific weapons would cause your mech to shut down for a couple of seconds.
The series always had literal stagger too but it was generally limited to the obvious heavy weapons to deal it out. Otherwise, besides some obvious cues they took from the Souls games in storytelling compared to the old games and a pretty weak soundtrack barring a handful of songs (ESPECIALLY compared to the previous games) this is probably the best modern AC I could hope for. This series never had a wide appeal in the west, and 6 retains a lot from the previous entries. The fact it's done this well with this release is reassuring they'll continue the series and maybe dial the soulsy elements that are still there back.
You are correct about the disjointed difficulty. Balteus is difficult on a first playthrough because you have nothing but crap parts, CEL-240/IBIS is a copy/paste Dark Souls boss that requires cheesing unless you've spent enough time dying you know how to exploit its cheap ass moveset. The rest of the game felt fair, but FromSoft always decides to throw a bullshit wall at you randomly in their games that actively goes against what you learned so far.

100 % agree. When I was playing the best strat for just about anything is to pack miniguns or shotguns, break an enemy, and then unload on them with the strongest shit in the game. Because simply having an enemy stalled out for 3 seconds is massive, like
but certain game bosses have hp pools so fucking massive that without stagger the fights are an exercise in frustration. Also wish the game had a bit more mech parts overall and the soundtrack itself felt very forgettable.

And I honestly wouldn't be opposed to the idea of them making some free update or even cheap DLC (as if) that adds some more missions and mech parts. I have my fair share of criticism for this but considering we don't get mech games from like anyone period anymore and this game presumably being a safe test to see if the series can still generate interest among fans, I'm still very satisfied and hopeful they can test out some new experimental things or bring back better series staples. @@ni9274well the spikes are mismatched. Ideally, you'd like to have the spikes come into a nice curve. But the game spikes at random heights. Like, the chapter 4 boss is arguably harder than the final boss. That's a very tough spike that doesn't make much sense.

    • @arkgaharandan5881
      @arkgaharandan5881 10 месяцев назад +4

The original games on psx and ps2 mostly took place in interior levels because these consoles couldnt render large maps, for that reason you had less ammo and armor and you fought less enemies, all that changed with 4 that was the first game in x360/ps3, 4 had these super giant mechs that could fly around called NEXT that basically drew power from kojima particles in the air, basically the force but for mechs, this is when the game became much faster and more casual so they balanced it for 5 by getting rid of the NEXT mechs and kojima particles and having a post apocalyptic setting that mechs were slow like tanks. Playing as a heavy was never viable in the old games, you took too much damage and had to spend a fortune to repair, in the old games you could easily finish a mission with such high expenses that you go into debt and when you go too much into debt the game restarts but you get ugprades this is called human plus and they got rid of it in the newer games. The stagger meter and all the other bonus damage systems are new things to the series. The old games could not do large maps so large bosses were not a thing, it was mission after mission and you killed a few mechs, in fact it was better not to fight any enemies you do not have to so you dont waste ammo because most missions did not give you more money for destroying every enemy, so you just wasted your ammo, you mostly had to rush to the objectives. The giant mech bosses are a thing that was created in armored core 5 and it seems souls like games have influenced this game to have this inconsistent difficulty in which the game is easy apart form bosses that require a specific build. Speaking of changing your build, the old games did not have repair kits and checkpoints, if you die you go back at the mission select but you still lose money for ammo and repairs and if you fail too many times, time passes and you cant play that mission anymore and it changes the story. You could argue that this game is probably the most caual armored core game but since its lower than 4 and you cant fly around, its slightly harder, but 4 did not have these kind of bosses so that makes the bosses alone super hard. All of this seems to be happening because of the souls reputation of being hard, so they made the main game easy and the bosses what people call "filters".

Elden Ring and DS3 were, taken on their own merit, still great games. If I compare those to the games I like from ONLY FromSoft, then they are suddenly inferior to their other contemporary releases. But people who think AC6 and Elden are meh on their own merits are straight up myopic about gaming as a whole. If one claims that games have fundamentally evolved in such a way that they must be these big, expansive, once in a lifetime epics, then they really don't remember what the brunt of releases are and we're on previous consoles. There are certainly dozens of masterpieces that are justifiably lauded, but they were always exceptions and not the standard. Some people, myself included, like games like these.

@@12ealDealOfficial I wouldn't call Elden Ring a great game. At least personally. It's OK to good. It has a great presentation and OST which elevates its score a bit, but if we remove all the pretty colors and the great sounds, what do we really got? While there was some beautiful sceneries in some certain location, all in all, the open world was empty and bland and the dungeons were pretty much copy&pasted with very little differences made between them and many of them offered shit rewards that was useless to the build you were going for. The story was almost non-existent and for a world as large as ER, the game barely had any NPCs. And when it comes to NPC's storyline, good luck trying to complete them without looking up a guide.
And don't give me the bullshit excuse that the story could be expanded upon and understood by reading item descriptions, sorry, but with open world, that's one of the most retarded ways of telling a story.
ER is the only souls game that I have played where I got very bored half-way through the game and rushed through it to the end, even by using summons when I never used summons on my first playthrough. I have tried replaying it multiple times..and I just get bored just a few hours in and quit the game, this is not something I can say off of the lesser popular game, Dark Souls 2, that I've replayed to the end multiple times.
Making ER open world was a big mistake in my opinion. Because the best part of ER was the sections that was reminiscent of that good fromsoft level design we are used to seeing in the souls game, like Stormveil Castle. But unfortunately, we got very little of that, and more of just empty lands with random uninteresting enemies that we just ended up ignoring by riding through with our horse with ease.

I think you're being too harsh on this game. It's incredibly polished, despite its repetitiveness. The diversity comes from the build options that are available to you.
This idea that the difficulty spikes are somehow bad game design is just not substantiated by any solid reasoning. Having peaks and valleys is exactly what good pacing looks like. And just because some enemies are fodder doesn't mean that the game isn't still teaching you, constantly demonstrating new tactics, strategies, encounter scenarios, and weapons for you to try. There's fun even in optimizing the simpler encounters.
I don't appreciate your take on the story. There's so much depth and meaningful interactions there, and hearing that you didn't even care or interact with it deeply was disappointing. It's the same style of story telling from software has always relied on. You get out what you put into it, and if you didn't want to put anything into it that's fine, but that's not the game's fault that you came away receiving little impact from it.
Overall your video did have some good points, but your judgement on the quality of the game was not sound, and is not representative of the actual positive experience most people will have of the game. Hopefully the positive qualities of this game will shine brighter when more time has passed, but if not then at least we'll know what needs to be improved in future games.

As a longtime armored Core fan I too feel this game is just okay. I'm having a ton of fun with it because I love giant robots but I have way more critiques because of my experience with the series. They dumbed down a lot of operational in-depth customizations like the ability to balance your thrusters so if you wanted to have a quick turn but only on one side and not sacrifice weight by purchasing a different Thruster you had that option. They also need to add a downward thrust. Floating down or activate your booster that will only allow you to drop at 45 to 60° angle are your only options and they suck. Past armored Core devs made a game over a year ago on the switch called Daemon X machina and it had way more control and customization for your Mech than this game and I recommend it. The cutscenes and dialog are not great though.

I think the biggest problem with this game is that it expects you to change your build a bunch of times, but if you do it in an optimize way, you are gonna breeze through it, so people who get stuck are gonna look online for "best build for this boss" and never have a problem, and those who beat their heads over and over again are gonna get bored of the missions in between challenges. So no one is really having the best time.

I didn't have this experience at all. I really have no idea what you people are on about. I picked a build I liked and only changed my weapons a bit depending on the damage types the boss was weak to.
Also, the missions were a fine challenge, because the challenge isn't to just beat them, it's to actually be good at them. Get a good rank on the mission replay, take as little damage and use as little ammo as possible to maximize the mission rewards. And of course, using checkpoints is for pussies.
And the bosses were awesome. Just the right amount of challenge, as long as you're concentrating and paying attention.

You have basically just experienced when most of the armored core games are like. As someone who has played all of the back catalogue that's basically all the missions. A lot of them favor certain builds over others, and so you have to get more parts to build the Mac that is best-suited for the situation. However, once you get really skilled in the game you can basically use whatever build you want to clear out the mission because it best suits your gameplay style.

I remember watching you first play tank and yeah, it's definitely more braindead gameplay. Tanks/quad dominating is a result of hard lock. I don't care what any fanboy says, 40-60% of the gameplay in old armored core games is just you trying to keep a target lock and it could be rather difficult with heavier builds. (Not that I mind hard lock actually, just wanted to point it out) Tank builds were certainly easy mode back then too, but at least you had to try and aim.
I've played almost all the Armored core games (Minus Last Raven, Formula Front, and Verdict day) and I knew this game was going to be meh. I knew most non-fans wouldn't like it and even I don't really like it all that much. (It's ok, nothing special. Not nearly as good as 3) I much prefer the earlier versions (3 and prior). 4 just made the game way too fast and anime-like. AC6 feels like a bad, confused compromise with an injection of souls-like elements.
I think the repair kits emphasize this the most, serving no other purpose than to force you to press a button to get the rest of your AP. The earlier versions were more about endurance and the easier mobs more of a tax. WTB Chromehounds 2 or Mech Assault 3 or something. Want me slow paced mech game instead of this boost spam shite.

Its the last puzzlepiece they stripped away to go from feeling like controlling a machine to just controling a character on screen in a vidya game. Luckily the mech do still have *some* weight to them so its at least better than DxM.
But I agree the ps1/ps2 controls are awesome. Only started playing through all the games couple years ago and I think the controls are one of the main reason those are still my favorites. Its so asinine to pretend that those controls are impossible to get used to anymore. People just arent willing to put in the effort, and thats fine but they wont get the same experience either then.

I'm one of the people who got stuck on the "tutorial boss". I ended up giving up the game and going back to Mechwarrior 5 instead. I'll go back to AC6 at some point, but it's like you said: the game teaches you next to nothing in that tutorial stage, and the regular enemies are just there to be shot at. They pose absolutely no challenge to you. So to have the game throw a boss in your face where you absolutely DO need to know what you're doing when you just spent 15 minutes where you learned nothing and had to use nothing is just a bad design decision. The boss is also fond of flying out of bounds where you can't hit it with your better weapons, and the lock-on camera doesn't "lock on" in the slightest. It may be the worst camera FromSoft's ever made, which is saying something considering how awful their cameras have been.
Yeah, I'm sure the boss is piss-easy if you know what you're doing, but by extension it's the 1st level. You DON'T know what you're doing, and you don't have access to the aspects of the game people praise like the mech customization. I know nothing about how best to manage Boost, so I got to use my beam saber, and suddenly I have no boost while the boss is alpha-striking me out of the air. It just feels cheap, and I'm not exactly new to FromSoft's bullshit at this point.

"teaches you next to nothing" said the ignorant that can't figure it out what game want you to do.
And that "lock on" have soft lock-on that just an auto aim and hard lock-on that focus on on enemy, and this was explained in tutorial which is obviously you didn't even read.
tl;dr Skill issue and good riddance to get filtered by the great filter-copter.

@r99azm80 And FromSoft fans are eternally perplexed as to why everyone hates them.
Dude, I Platinumed Sekiro & Bloodborne, and I've completed Dark Souls 1; Nioh 1 & 2; and Stranger of Paradise. I'm not stranger to difficult games. I just think Armored Core 6's tutorial is really shit. You go from wailing on glorified target dummies to getting carpet-bombed by a boss that can spend 9/10 of the fight out of bounds while your camera spins around ineffectually.

@@broodwars64 yeah I do agree fromsoft fans are like hyper autistic but like you claim to have beaten all these games and yet you don't get how the tutorial boss operates? Aren't fromsoft games about learning patterns? did you even LEARN anything about fromsoft during your time achieving "platinum" on them? well from what I have gathered from these comments you also kinda proved why people hate us anyways and why we argue with each other all the time, well thanks for reminding me this annoying fact yet again.

@@broodwars64The out of bounds can be easily fixed by baiting the boss via taking cover. Handler Walter literally tells you to use your blade, It's not that hard to figure out.

Interesting take as usual. I'm more used to the rock-paper-scissors aspects of games of this style and enjoy just fiddling around with different builds for different fights and trying to S-Rank missions with minimal damage taken and ammo expended rather than just tanking the damage and hitting the enemy with really big guns, so maybe I'm more in the target demo for this. I'm glad they made this and I hope they get enough commercial success to make expansions and/or sequels.
Also, I think while people might have gotten the wrong expectations about this game from Vaati's takes on it, I don't think he was essentially incorrect. Without a doubt they've incorporated gameplay mechanics and elements from the souls games into this one. It's still fundamentally an armored core game, though.
