  • Join me for this 35-minute practice with a focus on the movement and philosophy of ease. Sometimes, this is easier said than done. It can be “easier” to do what you are told rather than find what feels good and be present in your body. The fundamentals of ease is a practice that can shift the way you arrive on your mat, and the way in which your time there serves you.
This holistic session will be nice for beginners but also beneficial for anyone at any stage of their yoga practice as it focuses on the philosophy of one of my favorite yoga sutras which teaches us ultimately how to balance effort with ease.
Start by asking: Where can you soften?
    And, breathe, baby, breathe.

It's amazing how something labeled "for beginners" is, in a way, almost more difficult than something that's not "for beginners" because it forces us to slow down and actually think about what we're doing, which we as humans always tend to forget when we consider ourselves "good" at something. Just proves that there is always room for improvement in everything we do!

Yes, slowing down is the key to really being present in the pose, in the mind, in your heart. In our western society, its not really something that's encouraged, but we yogis know how great it really is. An not easy!! Going slow is a practice. Namaste.

I ALMOST skipped this one (ego check!) bc I thought this wouldnt be the most challenging practice. But i scrolled thru the comments and realized i wasnt alone in this thought, and decided I was likely wrong and I should practice this exact video. I "found something new" as Adriene always says, and realized I was working too hard it cobra (over extending, clenching the buttocks, losing the breath). If you arent a beginner per se and think this video isnt for you, Id say, check your ego at the door, click play, and have an honest experience with this one. Quiet the voice in your head that says you dont need a video like this and strive to find something new in these basic fundamental poses. We ALL can benefit from fundamentals

For all non beginners who doubt if they should do this practice: DO IT! I also doubted if I had to do this practice since it says "yoga for beginners" and I do yoga everyday for quite a while. I decided to give it a try and I noticed that my ego had taken over some poses and in this practice I relearned the poses. I felt fresh and new. Downward facing dog never felt so good as it did in this yoga practice, and it was even a fierce practice, it was definitely not an easy practice💪🤸‍♀️. I'm glad that I did it. Thank you Adriene. 💚

I really was feeling like this was the opposite of a beginner's practice, and not conducive to finding ease at all! You sit there telling me to make sure I'm not working harder than I need to while I'm also trying to keep in mind pulling my hip crease towards the center and activating my core so I'm not putting all my weight into my fingertips and all that, and it's tough!! It's a lot of work to hold still in those positions, even as someone who is not a beginner! However, while lying in the final child's pose, breathing and listening, I had a sudden realization. Maybe it's the thoughts of discouragement or even of "this is too hard!!" that represents me working harder than I need to. Maybe working hard doesn't mean I'm working too hard, but it's a matter of working through difficulty with patience and love and the perspective of growth and change.

I found it mentally difficult to finish today’s yoga. I had to pause the video about half way and as an observer ask myself why I felt anxiety all of a sudden. I came to the conclusion that I often come into yoga with the wrong intentions. When I unpaused the video, I heard “working with your body, not on it. Working for yourself, not against it”. Thank you for always saying such kind and encouraging words during the practice.

I’ve read that yoga can cause anxiety because we are putting our bodies in physically vulnerable positions. If you’re holding onto anxiety it will come through in yoga sometimes. I’ve also read that yoga has the intention of bringing these emotions to the surface so we can can process them more fully. Interesting to think about.

This practice was a big lesson for me, and I would like to share with you what I’ve learned (or better said, re-learned). I started to do yoga with the Breath Series back this year and I had not built any fundamentals. So I’ve kind of been practicing yoga without having the solid basics. I said to give this video a try as part of the Nourish month. It was amazing to see that the only thing I knew was that I knew nothing. I was shook when Adriene asked “Are you working harder than you need to?” And I was. And just by realizing and modifying some a stuff, my whole body changed. Everything got easier. I saw that even the plank movement I was holding everyday could be improved… So guys, I learned not to take learning for granted. And as Adriene said at the final, “showing the willingness to learn, not to master.”

I was looking for something gentle and fundamental that would allow me to tune into all the unfamiliar tightness and any lack of strength from the recovery period. I'm so glad I chose Fundamentals of Ease. I found out that I am a far cry from the easy crow pose condition I was in pre-surgery, but Adriene's wonderful affirmations made it easy for me to accept that I will be building from the bottom up again. I always recommend Adriene's videos for people of all yogi levels, but I recommend this video in particular. On to the complaints; I went back to the classroom yesterday and I ache in every single location of my body. I couldn’t sleep last night. HOWEVER, I wouldn’t have been able to get through the day of standing and going up and down stairs had I not been doing this practice with you and Adriene this year. This is the first time I've been able to bring myself to do yoga since the beginning of the pandemic. The shock of all the change in the world, along with the various traumas I've had throughout my life, have made it a survival mechanism for me to vacate my body and totally disconnect when I'm threatened. What an interesting practice, although my body is definitely weaker and shakier, I found that my ability to really tune in to the subtle aspects of each pose was actually even deeper than ever before in the many YWA videos I've worked with. Also, just dropping that line right at the end, "show up with an open mind and a willingness to learn, rather than master," was just the reminder I needed in a lot of areas of my life right now. So good to see Adriene again, and to reconnect with my body for the first time in months. I don't know what I was so afraid of.

When I first started practicing yoga again after a few years without it, an instructor (who was very experienced) said she often attends beginners/basics/fundamentals classes. Her reasoning being that they are slower so your muscles are engaged for longer which builds strength. Also because it reminds her of the building blocks of each posture, which can be lost in a fast-paced class. Ever since I heard that, I almost exclusively attend beginner's classes in person and I always get so much out of them. Adriene is such an amazing teacher and this video session was no different - I got so much out of it! I feel strong yet completely relaxed. I loved the fundamentals of extended side angle that she took us through. It's so beneficial to wind it back and revisit our roots.
