It’s no secret that one of my favourite shows of all time is ATLA, it is my comfort show, it brings me so much joy and Azula is hands down one of my favourite characters of all time. I mean she’s an icon.

This gets even sadder when you realize Azula was the younger sibling. She may have thought that this was one of the reasons Ursa played favorites and it probably reinforced Azula's obsession with status.

Azula is no less a victim of Ozai's abuse than Zuko. She deserved better. She deserved to grow up with a father who saw her as a daughter, not a living weapon, a mother who loved her, who didn’t fear a potential ticking time bomb. She deserved to grow up with a brother who saw her as someone to play with, to protect and be protected by. She deserved love. But she didn’t get any. Because war’s cruelty is second only to those who start and perpetuate war.
I mean Ozai didn't blast her in the face with his fire permanently scarring her for life only to then disown and kick her out of the house and sent on an impossible quest just because she offered some constructive criticism. so yeah she got off CONSIDERABLY BETTER than Zuko

@@SimilarSound One could argue Azula got it worse. Zuko managed to recover and become a happier, healthier person. Azula, not so much. I suppose it depends on how one defined ‘worse’. The argument could be made that Ozai equally fucked them up, just in different ways. Because the man is a jackass.
I like how during the final agni kai mid fight Azula see’s her mother once again (like several times during the song) but i think that’s reminding us the whole reason why azula lost the fight AND her mind in the first place.
I miss Azula, when Azula told her brother and friends "My own mother thought I was a monster, she was right, but it still hurt." it was a cry for help.

In hindsight, Azula was the one lucky to be born, she was a prodigy but she was a perfectionist who worked for it harder than anyone else, she never felt loved by anyone, even Iroh thought she was a monster who needed to be taken down and never bothered to help her, her mother abandoned her, her friends abandoned her, Zuko had his mother and uncle, Azula was left to their abusive father and twin aunts...
There were warning signs of her mental breakdown in the beach episode, everyone else was rekindling friendships and starting romance, Azula on the other hand clearly wanted love and affection, but was rejected out of fear, and when she tried to get a people to like her she went off about 'world domination' because she thinks the only value she has is as a weapon or in her status as a princess.

Adding to the lucky to be born, Ozai and Ursa had a child and a son at that. If we're going by historical royal family rules, they didn't "need" a second child. They already had their heir. It was probably happenstance that Azula was conceived in the first place

@@AmberSmith-gv3fl Historically, high ranking families go by the motto "Heir and a Spare", so Azula would have technically been the spare, being the second born. However, I also hold by the theory that when Zuko was born without the "spark" the oracles said he should have had, Ozai decided he needed another child who was born with the spark from the outset just to ensure he had at least one guaranteed firebender heir. Because to Ozai, there was nothing more outrageous than having an heir with no firebending capabilities. That's why there's such conflict between Zuko and Azula as instigated by Ozai; Zuko was technically the heir because he was firstborn, but Ozai favored Azula as the more powerful firebender. Plus, he maliciously agreed to treat Zuko as if he wasn't his son as Ursa told him she wished Zuko was her first love's child.
Azula is both a terrifying and tragic villain. She’s the younger sibling, and suffered abuse just like Zuko… the fact she breaks the way she does is so heartbreaking. 😭

During the animatic, we never see Ursa's eyes (even if they are mentioned) We get the impression that Ursula is distant, judging, looking down on Azula and fearing her.
But in the end, we do see her whole face, and there is nothing but love. I remember the official Avatar RUclips channel saying that Azula doesn't want to accept that her mother did love her, because that would mean that she doesn't have to act the way she does, but she thinks has gone too far to just turn back.

The build up to the quicker section is just perfect! And, I have rambled before in comments about Azula but this song also really strikes a chord with her character. "When you're raised in war...", some people don't take into account that Azula is not only the younger sibling but is one of the youngest main characters. The main cast of Avatar (for the most part), are children.
Azula is a young child raised during a time of great war, in an extremely strict, and honestly toxic nation, under the rule of a dictator, who happens to be her father. She was "born lucky" and Zuko was "lucky to be born". That mentality, everything Azula does, says, she is like 13 in this show. I can see why she behaves like she does, its no excuse but she is a terribly broken girl. And I like that this song showcases that "You can't be hurt if you strike first." That is almost her entire character summed up.
Good work! Love the visuals, and some really good lyrics. I like the story-telling in your songs, and this one is a banger.
I have to say but azula is my FAVORITE character, but she doesn’t get many songs on youtube :(. So glad this song came out!!

This animatic feels so spot on in so many ways.. The art style just fits Azula and helps emphasize the intensity of the extremist mentality she wrestles with, in a way that doesn't come across in the original cartoonish style of the show.
The lyrics and images really capture her mindset and concisely put all the parts of it in sequence, from her past, to her justifications, and to the emotional rollercoaster she went through during the show.
Amazing work.
Azula hesitating in a moment of being haunted by the image of her mother in the flames and Zuko coming at her was an inspired twist to add. Really nice way of bringing her struggle visually into that fight, and simultaniously underline the 'destiny' like conclusion of Zuko as the embodiment of their mother.
Even tho Azula isnt exactly my favourite character, i gotta admit she's THAT girl! She's a girl boss and i will take any atla songs that i can get!!❤

I think her mother did love her but just was also scared of her and what she'd do. If you read the comics you see that the mother was also being a**sed and she wasn't really even allowed to interact with her daughter. Basically the fire lord was just a complete monster and made his family suffer because of it.

But Ursa never wanted a second child. (Ozai did bc he saw Zuko as “weak”).
Thus, seeing Azula firebend triggered Ursa’s own PTSD.
She never viewed her as a monster, but when she looked at her daughter, she was reminded of her a*****er.
She did genuinely love her, just struggled to show it.

Probably the best thing that ever happened to Zuko was getting banished. Taken out of that twisted environment, he had a chance to flourish and discover who he was away from all that brainwashing.

Maturing is realizing Azula was just as much of a victim as Zuko was in this family.
I feel like people literally forgot Azula was abused too. She might have not gotten it physically but she got it mentally, she was treated as a weapon for war. Her own mother thought of her as a monster and no one was there for her. And yes her friends was there from the start until the betrayal. And the thing people mostly forget is that Azula is still a child, she is fourteen, a child who is longing for love,care and attention..And yet that wasn't given to her.
PFFT HAHAHAH, she was NOT abused. She WANTED to be trained and get power so she could exert it over others. She was a sociopath.

@@shadowhawkrine1947 I feel like you missed the episode of where they went to a beach, Azula was trying to be loved that she even got jealous at tai lee(is that her name?) and at one scene she was flirting with a man but ended up messing it up because she thinks Power and status is all that matters. She uses fear as a weapon to rule others not power. Now such child won't be like that if their environment wasn't bad. And let's be honest here, Their father was a bad figure. Abused his wife and children. And I'm pretty sure He also forbids Azula to meet her mom.

Azula had a great arc in the comics, which take place after thr series ends. The second volume, The Search has her join the Gaang (Aang, Katatra, Sokka and Zuko) in looking for Ursa, her and Zuko's mother. She does stuff after that and even has her own comic (Azula and the Spirit Temple).
Read the comics. They're written by the original writers of the show, they're canon, and they give a lot of world building, character drama and fantastic stories.
You can either buy them frae book stores or digitally frae Dark Horse comics or borrow them frae a library.

I’m still so happy Avatar studio KNOWS how many people like Azula and are giving her a redemption. Like obviously she is being hella slow and still probably has like several issues to go. But it’s the thought that counts 😂😂
What an amazing song, I love how Ursa appears multiple times, and baby Azula crying 😢. I wish we could have seen an alternative version of Ursa's banishment, where she was able to get Zuko and Azula away from Ozai and given time their brainwashing would be undone 😔

Ursa could have raised her children better if Ozai didn't make her job a lot harder by influencing them negatively. It didn't help that she was banished when they were still young... At least Zuko still had Iroh

In the end of the series, Azula lost: her friends betrayed her, her father cast her aside, her servants and helpers were banished from her presence, and she was beaten by her brother and his friend, a simple waterbender who rose above her trauma and became a powerful fighter, even at the height of Sozien's Comet, which amplified a firebender's powers. Zuko won because he had Uncle Iroh, Aang, Toph, Sokka, Suki, and Katara to count on. Azula had no one. And it was at that moment that she snapped and fell into insanity.
Makes people realize that she was just a kid, a 14 year old who wanted love- and was denied it.
A song about one of my favorite cartoons, and about my favorite character from it?! No way!!!!!!!
Oh damn, this was absolutely amazing. The song was fire (pun very much intended) and "Luck_Buggy"'s art style was perfect for Azula. Just like with Villain AU Belle, the art really captured the essence of Azula and her insanity.
I'm going to share this with my niece now; as she puts it: "Avatar was my childhood", so she'll love this. Again, this was absolutely amazing, great work Lydia!
Reality of Azula was her psychosis was a product of Ozai's influence. It really is seen when she loses Mai and Ty lee as support structures, just how unraveled she came. Azula isn't a sociopath by nature, it was something inadvertently taught to her by her environment. There is a comic (that I think is canon and not fanfiction that I know) that does see her come back to being more sane and I would say ashamed of who she was. There really was an opportunity to build up are really interesting character after she was broken down in the final agni kai. Unfortunately, we will never get to see it realized. (at least not in canon. Fanfics for the win I suppose in this matter)

I've always adored Azula, mostly because I love sympathetic/tragic villains but also because I saw the person I could've been without my own mother's love and guidance in her (seriously she's the only reason I even somewhat think about the effect my actions have on people or care about others in general and I'm still not the greatest at it but I'm much better than I would've been had I not been taught/encouraged to do it as a kid)
This song really explains how Azula's mental state was deteriorating throughout the 100-year war and afterwards. I feel terrible for Princess Azula. Even the most powerful and skilled elemental benders can suffer from the feeling of being powerless and vulnerable. Very awesome animatic, Lydia! Keep up the awesome work!

I just got to meet Azula’s VA at a event she was so nice but she said Azula isn’t a monster she believes she is just traumatized by the abuse her family gave or at least that’s what she thinks!
Omg I never knew that i needed an ATLA : Azula song till now. You NEVER cease to amaze me with your incredible singing. This was absolutely breathtaking and amazing, & the visuals of the video absolutely wonderful. Azula is my favorite villian of the series & she just like Zuko has been through abuse maybe not physically but mentally and emotionally yes, & she was a byproduct of a tyrant who kept war continuously going. She barely had gotten any love unless it was from her father for pleasing him with her skills & intellect as well as for practicing his teachings that would make her father proud, while her mother saw her as a monster that was just like her father, her uncle never understood her, her only friends feared her than be loyal to her. I felt bad for her cause during the whole entire show since it introduced her she was young, Katara's age & she was the younger sibling & how she had a mental breakdown
I love this so much!! It perfectly encapsulates her downfall and what makes Azula such a good villain in the first place
I always liked that they chose to use really sad music in the background of their agni kai rather than the cool battle music they used in Zuko v Zhao. Just solidified how tragic the confrontation really was. No triumph, no honor, just the tragic suffering of a pair of kids pitted against each other from the beginning by their own father.

Azula is a really cool character, and she's as much a victim of abuse as Zuko. It may not be as visible, and she may be able to give the impression of competence and being "high-functioning", for a while, but sooner or later that trauma got to her.

She has such a great set up for it--Achilles killed her father and all seven of her brothers in one day, and maybe watching her husband return to war knowing he might never come back is what finally makes her snap
