EDIT: So there's been a lot of confusion with the lyrics "you're a flicker of the second-born" the "second-born" referred to here is actually AZULA and not Zuko. I am aware that she is the younger sibling. She's establishing that she is much more powerful when compared to Zuko, her fire burns hot and strong while Zuko is but a flicker of what she is. // Who’s your favourite Avatar character? I think mine is pretty obvious 😂 it’s Azula! I’ve always been a sucker for the complex villian types *cough cough* Catra so i’ve recently watched the entirety of ATLA again and i’m so glad more people are finally appreciating the cinematic masterpiece that is ATLA because it deserves the world.
Mine is zuko, I'm a sucker for a great redemption arc *cough* catra *cough* 😂 I honestly think that zuko's redemption is the greatest in animation history maybe even in TV show history...
I appreciate the pun! It took a second. I was about to leave a comment above and then my brain went ROASTING HA...wait, that's coffee...Anyway, I like that line, too.
@@skysuniverse4587 What makes this even funnier is that I am known in my friend group for puns and wordplay...yet I thought of "roasting coffee" instead of the actual roasting with fire. For some reason, my brain didn't get that literal fire part but somehow got roasting coffee...strange, how my mind works sometimes...thank you for letting me know my blunder.
I can imagine Azula singing this before her coronation as she paces across the empty throne room with the curtain of blue flames flickering behind her, taunting her hallucination of Zuko
For me its before she starts to lose it. I feel like this song captures her earlier character best. It's cold, calculate with each word meant to deal as much damage as possible. And then when she starts to lose it I feel like her style of singing would change to be more quick all over the place. Using a variety of instruments and loud belts or high notes.
@@BrynnSasha191 No, Azula just never knew compassion. She took after her dad in a lot since she was born and Ursa could just never get through to her. That’s why she tried her hardest on Zuko before she ended up leaving. Also it wasn’t that her mother didn’t like, love, or care for Azula, she just couldn’t understand or get through to a child that was too much like the crazy father.
@@undercoverfangirl5491 Yeah, but you teach compassion to a child. They don't automatically have it. Zuko didn't have compassion either. He hunted down the world's last chance for hope and peace for years all to be accepted by a father that didn't love him. It was for face. Ofc their circumstances are different but Ursa's constant scolding and disapproval of Azula instead of sitting her down and trying to spend more time with her, while also siding with Zuko? It's not surprising this would only push Azula TOWARDS Ozai and towards behaviours that were unacceptable. Ursa was her mother, but didn't fulfil her duty to her daughter.
@@carmy2155 Late comment, but I think Ursa actually did at least try to spend time with Azula. The only things we ever see from Ursa are Zuko’s memories, so since Azula was constantly mentally abusing Zuko his POV of their interactions are Ursa scolding her. Azula has a slight break in character in the beach episode where she says “my own mother thought I was a monster” which may have been true, but if that truly was all there was to it Azula wouldn’t be conflicted. In the last few episodes with Azula’s breakdown we see her delusion of Ursa tell Azula she loves her, so deep down she knows that Ursa loved her to some extent. There had to have been some good moments between Ursa and Azula or Azula wouldn’t have any trouble believing Ursa never loved her. Ursa was trying to teach the kids kindness and compassion, Ozai was trying to teach them that kindness and compassion made them weak. Azula’s psychopathic tendencies were more in line with Ozai so she followed his teachings more, where Zuko leaned more into Ursa’s. I believe Ursa tried to help Azula but since Azula and Ozai were so abusive to Zuko she spent 95% of her time on damage control. TLDR: I think if we saw things from a neutral POV instead of Zukos there would be more positive scenes between Ursa and Azula and there would be less people calling her a bad mother, because she really wasn’t.
@@restofourdaus9950 "a ruler" isnt specific, and a lot more general. "The ruler" is more specific and centralised. Its a small way of showing Azula become less and less sincere
I love your way with lyrics! Using "pretty boy" to bring up the moment her brother was permanently disfigured by their father is SO savage and in character, wow!
@@reinaeiry I think you captured Azula's character perfectly with this song. If A:TLA ever becomes a musical, I hope they hire you to write some of the songs!
@@kurtis1236 I think there is a fanmade musical project going on. I don't remember the name of the person behind the idea, but you can find the songs if you search "atla musical" or something along the lines
"You look better in an apron serving tea." Zuko, whose last scene in the series is him as fire lord, serving tea to his friends: "I have two hands and you're about to catch them both, Azula."
That line could kind of be seen as a compliment like in Azula's own twisted way she's admitting that Zuko is happier than he had ever been as the fire nation prince.
Yes I agree Short hair Zuko looks better than bald-except-a-ponytail Zuko from Book 1 And Fire Lord Zuko-I mean, that little bun…honestly, it’s not really logical. I Tarik love it, but shortie hair Zuko is the besttttttt
Tbh zuko should fight. You know in most societies your opinion is backed by facts and logic, but in the fire nation it is backed by your ability and will to fight and die for it. If zuko cared so much about the lives of soldiers he would fight for them. Ozai really tried to put his willpower to the test. The problem is that zuko was like 12 then. It was when ozai saw that he gives up so easily that he was disappointed. Ozai didn't want his son to be someone so weak willed and submissive, because he was the next firelord after him.
She way she sings is ,as if she was talking to Zuko with a voice cold, direct, calm and quiet, reflecting her personality in the show and it is as if she was having a conversation with Zuko. Even the notes ads executed beautifully with a steady enforcing voice, still not yelling since she was talking to her brother. This is a masterpiece
"Even my mother thought me evil / So evil I'll be" Goddamn, this is somehow both badass and tragic at the same time. When you consider Azula's upbringing and how much more Ursa gravitated towards Zuko than Azula, it probably didn't do anything to quell Azula's belief that her mother thought she was some irredeemable monster. And it certainly didn't help that being a cruel, heartless war machine was essentially all Ozai wanted her to be. So, she just gave into the perception and became the monster that she believed her mother thought her to be, and that her father taught her to be.
Why does people paint Ursa as a bad parent? She DID try with Azula, but she had the same mentality as her father so they methods crashed and burned. (ha. such a pun) Ursa loved Azula until de end, with the scene of her kissing the child before going away
@@ianesgrecia8568 I never said Ursa was a bad mother. She definitely tried to keep Azula in line and tried to teach her the error of her ways/call her out for being careless about her other family members, but you can't really deny that she seemed to gravitate more towards Zuko while she was around. It wasn't an act of malice or willing neglect on her part, by any means, but Ursa's leaning towards Zuko undoubtedly had a negative impact on Azula's mental state, as she only leaned even more on Ozai for love and affection.
@@SuperNerdDaniel when you have a father constantly beating the hell (emotionaly) from one of your children, yes, you tend to support him. But Azula herself never responded to any of her mother tries to be a better person. In the end of the day zuko is his mother son just like azula is her father daughter
@@ianesgrecia8568 Only because it was her best chance of survival. Zuko probably would have been just as inclined toward their father if he was a prodigy too. She found strength easier than emotional maturity. Not that she didn’t have the later but not as developed. Here is hoping that we get a new season of both ATLA and TLOK. The source material is there in the comics. I just want to see Korrasami properly depicted.
This gave me chills. The slow Tempo makes her seem so much mire threatening. It feels like she's circling Zuko, looking down at him whike just waiting for the chance to pounce. Adore the lyrics as well. Gorgeous. Also? Her mentioning her blue flame is on of my favorite things, ever since I read that post about how the blue flame not only sets her apart as a special firebender but could also be seen as foreshadowing for her downfall, since it burns way hotter than red flames - burning her up quickly since she's running too hot.
Yeah and another thing that was the first thing to her losing her sanity so I'm still mad at them (even tho I liked her EVEN ore after her breakdown which makes no sense)
You can start to see the beginnings of her breakdown in the beach episode. Up to that point she was a feared and bad ass villain (I almost always fear her more than Ozai for most of the show), but in that episode you can see a bit into her mind and start to see the cracks
If Ty Li and Mai didn’t betray her she wouldn’t have gone insane,as soon because the betrayal she thought she couldn’t trust anyone leading to her insanity.
Not me crying over "So you say that I'm a monster, well I don't disagree. Even my mother thought me evil, so evil I'll be." This song is amazing and the lyrics capture the villainous side of Azula so well yet allowing this one glimse of her real -broken and neglected- part to show up by the very end. AND YOUR VOICE, MA'AM. I HAD GOOSEBUPMS. Thank you!
@@V_MSC I did and it's not cannon and very VERY wrong with the character. Azula is a egocentric sociopath that in our world would be a literal mega leader of enterprise, but in the Avatar plot she fall as a very good villan. A really good comparison I found to make a difference is to look at Hinata and Hanabi from Naruto. There you see two sibilings in basically the same situation (one favored and douctrinaded by father and grandfather and other underdog) but while Hanabi follow the orders, in no moment she takes pleasure in her sister pain. Azula looks for her mother attention to stablishes her as supperior. Thats ego. Not love. Look for any signs of her doing anything that's not about her, some kind of sacrifice or putting anyone first: You wont find any
I’m aware azula was cruel and possibly was a sociopath but children all internalize things told to them, like if you tell a child they’re a monster, they will internalize and believe it, and act like one (even more)
Ianes Grécia Yeah but Azula never realized. I wish she woke up when Ursa said goodbye. Could've totally been a redeeming factor and she never would've had to go off the deep end
@@amrithapai8436 Not a misunderstanding. She is not ashamed to be considered a monster. As many cases os sociopaths, they are intelligent and know what they are doing and their implications. But they also accept them. You can see it in the beach episode, the acceptance. Yes, it's not something she really wanted, but it was that and she's not ashamed of it. on the contrary. She acknowledges it as her own trait. What could be the misunderstanding you're talking about is the mother really thinking she is a monster, which is not true and only on Azula perception. The last Ursa scene shows exactly her kissing Azula on her sleep before going away, showing love despise not being 'the favorite'. Because parentes love their children. Yes, many have favorites, but that doesn't mean they dont love the others.

This song is absolutely stunning, I can’t stop listening to it. In the middle of it, she said something about “monster and psychopath” it made me think about what she said to her mother. The next few lines really made me think that she was singing to her mother instead of Zuko, which maybe shows how her relationship was greatly affected by both parents, not just ozai. Also, this was probably before the last Agni Kai fight, so it seems like she has embraced her title of a monster, which differs from that scene of her breaking down and weakening. Overall, gorgeous song. My friends and I love your music and you’re an incredible singer. Keep up the fantastic work!
When azula says “I laughed when pretty boy couldn’t take his daddy’s wrath,” she was just projecting her insecurities. She doesn’t want to face her daddy’s wrath either. She begs her father at the end of the show to not treat her like Zuko. The fact that she does show empathy speaks volumes about her character, but she’s glad it’s Zuko and not her.
i LOVE that in all of these azula is like this super powerful alto, i love the energy it brings and also alto rights of course it’s like she doesn’t even have to try her voice is so powerful by itself like her lightning
I love that you captured Azula s arrogance and the way she’s slightly sadistic. And how she’s isolated by the way shes seen both by herself and others.
I wrote something like that! The original is him singing right after he got his scar and then the lyrics change for the Agni Kai and it’s a countermelody for this song
I actually think that was one of the few times I disagreed with the writing because in the end Azula is a tragic character and it kinda feels off for Iroh, one of the most compassionate characters in the show, to be like, yes this emotionally traumatized girl needs to be taken down, no question about it.
@@iososop9169 I always saw it as a massive relief for Zuko: all his life people have been telling him to "get along" with Azula even though she was clearly being horrible to him. I understand Azula had emotional problems too, but she did indeed need to be taken down. Doesn't mean she should be killed, but she was not fit to be ina position of power.
Not saying your quote is wrong but that girls an animal you don't need to take her down I doubt anyone would be able to BUT if it has to be done put her down like the animal she is 👀
@@yahyaL0V3It’s a way to insult him, because even if he was the heir for being the first born. He was in the shadow of her little sister “the second born”.
Honestly Azula is such a well written and complex character. She’s still a villain, we love her, are terrified of her, fear her, and hate her all the same. (This is about to get long.) (Before I get comments about hating her, I mean before her mental breakdown she was cut throat and ruthless, amazing at it. But not a very good person, easy to dislike what she’s done. I both equally love her and know she’s not a good person.) Anywho, the fact that she was basically mainly raised by her father and grandfather, as in her more sociopathic behaviours are praised. Her mom saw her sociopathic daughter as some kind of monster, but also was so focused on Zuko. Her mom didn’t know what to do with a child like that, which led to Azula mainly being conditioned by her grandfather and father. She literally grew up with a genocidal maniac as a grandfather, and a future genocidal maniac as a father. She eventually started showing similar traits. She had what she thought was control over most of the show, she did have some kind of compassion, and though most of the time she can exhibit rude, awful, and sadistic behaviours, it’s very clear that she was hurting so badly. “My own mother thought I was a monster...she was right of course, but it still hurt.” You’d pass this as a brushing it off or acceptance but really it’s super painful. Her mom favoured Zuko over her and it messed with her, before their mom left she said goodbye to Zuko but obviously not Azula. Azula is a product of her environment. Before her mother left she was looked at like there was something wrong with her, though her mom did love Azula, she just assumed she was out of her control and destined to be like her father. So her mom looked at her like some kind of monster, and through all of Azulas conditioning, how a good portion of the fire nation were just ignorant and blind to the fact that what they’re doing is bad, before Zuko was basically a wanted criminal he also was similar. He was blinded by how many people were actually hurting, and he slowly realised it. The difference between Azula and him is that I have a feeling Azula understood what they were doing, as Zuko spent time with his nurturing mother, then after she left being exposed to the cruelty of his father and sister. Then after the abuse, he was banished but then put into the care of his uncle, who even before still showered him with love and affection. It’s no surprise for me to say that Azula probably understood what she was doing, how bad it was. But at least she was of use, at least she was praised, and wanted. Zuko wasn’t as good as her, he wasn’t praised, and he was weak. (To her.) Azula knew her mom saw something wrong with her, and she saw what it was. Instead of trying to change herself to get her mother affection, she opted to the false affection from her father and others, praising her talent. Because she was a ‘monster’ in a sense. It was a cruel thing and she decided to be nothing more than that. Azula knew that what she was doing was going to hurt people. That her mom was right. There’s something wrong with her, and instead of trying to better herself, she accepted the title. Then she had Mai and Tylee. Who were her friends, trusted them with her life. As much as she didn’t really admit it, she depended on them, had come to depend on them. She didn’t know any other form of loyalty or affection then inflicting fear and making them stay loyal. So when Mai choose Zuko over her, it was kind of like, “Of course she would, look at you. Even your weakling traitor brother was able to take loyalty from you. Your mother was right.” But then Tylee who was passive in terms of their friendship and her demeanor, who Azula was sure that, if anybody wouldn’t betray her, it’d be her. When she got betrayed by her. It was an extra. “Your mom was right. You are a monster. Look at you.” But then there was the other part of her that knew her mother did care about her, that her mom just made that mistake to not try hard enough for Azulas sake. That trail of betrayal has to sting, her mother didn’t try hard enough with Azula, Zuko wasn’t like her and was seen as weak, even then we’d seen her care about him, whether at some point she’d be cruel, or disguise it with cruelty, she was still human, her two friends, who she depended so much on, and hadn’t realised how much she did. Then lastly, the one person she constantly tossed people away for, who she hurt people for, who she became that monster that the people closest to her thought/knew her to be. Her Father. Who’d been the person to praise her, teach her, raise her, give her that false affection, cutting her off from showing certain emotions, which she gave up. He, out of everybody that had betrayed her, at the very end, as she was mentally breaking, just revealed to be using her all along. The monster she had become and all of that pain and suffering and she didn’t even get to be with her father, who she depended on for that praise and usefulness. He gave her a title still below him, betrayed once again. Paranoid about betrayal, ended in banishing anybody who invoked that paranoia. And how sad it is, that in her final moments of any kind of real mental stability, she became that little girl who just wanted her mom. At the very end she just wanted her mother. Craved that affection. And she despised herself for it, was angry at her mom for doing this to her, and angry at herself for doing this to herself, and feeling these things. Not to mention she looked so much like her mother. She was only *Fourteen* years old. She’s the same age as me. She didn’t deserve to go through all of that. In general, and not for her age. She was literally a killing machine by fourteen. ----------------------- Edit: I’d like to add something a commenter brought to my attention. Azulon didn’t have the biggest influence on Azula, BUT. I did notice one thing. Azulon favoured Iroh obviously, and gave him more acceptance and probably guidance. Ozai didn’t get that, as we can see. It also sounds very familiar to Ursa with Zuko and Azula. The oldest gets favoured by one parent and the younger seems to be left out a bit. Which causes issues in the youngest, they end up finding their support elsewhere and in doing so develop even more issues. The different case for Azula is the events that happened to trigger her, and that while it seems Ozai still was going to do what his father wanted, killing his son. Now this could be just based off the fact he obviously didn’t like Zuko very much, or based off the fact that he still wanted to do what his father said for some kind of acceptance. Either way, it seems Ozai got what he wanted and his parent eradicated. And Yk, he was an adult. He wasn’t completely concerned with his dad’s acceptance, though it definitely factored in. Azula was again, Fourteen. She did care about her lack of motherly affection and not to mention she looked so much like Ursa she would see her every time she looked in the mirror. She was emotionally fragile but also stable in a way. She had control over everything and like I’ve explained, it all went out of her control, and in the favour of her brother. So what to get from this edit is, Azulon had an effect on her, not the same effect I described way earlier, but still one. Ozai and Irohs dynamic, and their father(Azulon) influenced them similarly to how Zuko and Azula were influenced by Ursas treatment. Edit: I know nobody cares and will see this but I’m nearly 15, I have a little less than 2 months to go! ----------------------- Anyways if you read this much feel free to give your two cent in the comments, maybe like if you want. I like validation. Also, if you read all of this. Thanks for reading and tuning into one of my many extremely long thought process and character analysis. Tell me what you think by commenting please. Thank you.
Honestly the amount of thought the writers must've put in her character is what made her such a compelling character. Amazing analysis you really went deep into the character.
When I first saw Avatar as a kid I always misunderstood Azula and hated her with everything I got. But now that I see her I can't help but sympathize with her. She had a rough childhood without any guidance or anyone who really loved her. She was going through emotional abuse from a really tender age . Her mother's negligence and scolding her and only loving Zuko hurt her and she did even more crazy stuff only to catch her mom's attention. But her mother never told her what is right or wrong but only scolded her. So she went to Ozai , the only person who praised her for her talent and power. Kids seek love so she followed her father and her father manipulated her without her knowing. She is the most sad and tragic character . But she never openly showed her pain and kept them under her mask. She was even younger than Zuko but had to go through a lot. Now I love her character so much. She deserves so much better.
Wow... so wrong... So so wrong. Ursa was NOT a negligence mother and even Azula was a VERY SOCIOPATH CHILD Ursa still did her best to try to direct, although dear daddy and grampa didn't help. Azula was NOT a victim. She knows it. She knows that what she does is bad and hurt others, but she just doesn't have empathy, because that is what a sociopath does. People trying to victimize her like that diminish Azula character as the best villan ever in my opinion
I agree with you Yes Azula lost her mind but thats all down to the way she was treated and she is only 14 as well.Even though she is treated like a monster I do hope she has a redemption arc.

@@jonathangardner8306 you forgot her mom. she always gave in when her mom said something and once the mom was gone she even said to zuko "who's gonna make me? moooom?"
@@jos-josradvanji6203 I didn't forget. Azula never feared or respected her mother. Her mother carried some authority over her at the time but it was pretty clear to me Azula never listened to or valued her mother's opinion. Sure, Ursa could "punish" her to an extent but both knew that power had a firm expiration date. As such, everything Ursa told Azula was met with an eye roll or some other similar expression of disdain even if she outwardly complied. The relationship between Azula and Ursa is the classic case of "you can lead a horse to water but you can't make her drink." Ursa could, at times, compel Azula to act in a certain way but she couldn't instill a thought process or worldview into Azula. The most telling point is that none of Ursa's values such as compassion, empathy, or love became part of Azula's worldview while all of Ozai's values were core to her philosophy.
Azula was scary because she was a real treat, she won't wait you to transform to you to beat her, she is a natural leader. If you want to know a power of a ruler, look for people he is surrounded. But a mistake that Azula did make was that the people who served her were based on fear, if she did take the time to create real loyalty this would never have happened. The fall of Azula begun with the betrayal if wasn't that the team avatar certainly would lose.
It's better to be both loved and feared, but if you can only have one, take the latter and run with it. If she had a couple months to get her shit together she could have held onto power just fine.
Not really. Just the time she went wrong was when she even banished the Dai Lee. They were really loyal to her, because they have great respect for Azula as leader. Azula got real trust issues when her friends and at the end even her father didnt took her with him.
Machiavely would not agree i think... real fear can be a lot better than love really, especially when it comes to masses despite we do not really talk about them here.
Azula is probably one of my favorite characters of the show. So many people don't give her the recognition that she deserves. She was literally able to conquer Ba Sing Se at the age of 14 with just her wits and determination while Iroh who was considered one of the best generals of the Fire Nation couldn't even take it with a whole entire army backing him up. She was even the one who made the plan to destroy the Earth Kingdom like Sozin did to the Air Temples because she knew it would be easier to control and conquer them. (This is mentioned in the finale when Azula questions her father Ozai on why he is leaving her behind even though she came up with the plan on how to conquer the other kingdoms).
I can imagine her singing this in the final Agni Kai scene, showing her madness and anger more and more as the song progresses, while Zuko just focuses on the fight. Which would show how they roles kinda flipped throught the story
theres something about the tone of your voice it’s so cunning and hypnotising it’s like I’m being transported to another side of Azula where she could kill me with her words and I would thank her I LOVE IT UGH 🔥
Azula is by far my favorite character in Avatar. This song is so very much her; slow, premeditated, merciless, classy. You did *SUCH* a marvelous work, I can't help but thank you! And the artist that drew Azula as well! Both are absolutely amazing!
This is going to make a lot of people happy. There have been several comments about making animatics. I have seen your animatics, and so I know it is going to be fantastic!
I love how the multiple building voices of Azula's chorus hits with her descent into instability and dissonance within herself. Growing until it bubbles over and cracks
"Because you're not even a player and you never have been" Familiar??? "Don't flatter yourself, you were never even a player" Yup .... I see where that came from...👏👏
Like...who gave you the right to pop off like that? LIKE YOU POPPED OFFFFF!! The vocals, background vocals, and music is amazing! This song represents Azula’s personality and how she was during the whole show. Her narcissistic behavior and the way she cares herself, is all shown in this one video. She mentions how she is the villain and how she KNOWS it. She also also knows about how her mother treated her and why she left, and is why she is this way. In short: 𝑇𝐻𝐼𝑆 𝐼𝑆 𝐴𝑀𝐴𝑍𝐼𝑁𝐺𝐺!!!👏✨✨
ive for some reason hyperfixated on azula specifically, rather than ATLA as a whole, and there is not a lot of azula content that i havent already found, so ive had this song basically on repeat since i found it. you are responcible for most of my serotonin intake recently. the lyrics are really good and i love your voice, and the background music is perfect
Ahhhh this is incredible!! And using azula quotes!! Genius! “You were never even a player” and “you’re a quitter and a loser” from when she was referring to Uncle Iroh! That is a really nice parallel and shows the relationship between zuko and iroh I absolutely love this song!!!
I feel like that line where it goes “You’re a quitter and a lose while I will see this through” is kind of a reference to what Azula said when Uncle Iroh admitted defeat in Ba Sing Se. Just something I’ve noticed lol
I wish Azula had a redemption arc. Younger siblings learn their behaviour from the older siblings. She saw where trust and mediocre fire bending landed Zuko so she quickly tried to be the very best she could be in order to learn her father's love. When Mai and Ty Lee betray her it's a slap in the face for her as she's been taught that fear was far more reliable than trust which now clearly isn't the case as she's being betrayed while just moments earlier Zuko is saving Sokka from falling. She's calling into question everything shes been taught and it's the being of her mental breakdown. When she's beaten by Katara in the finale not only is she beaten by some water Tribe peasant but she's also seeing how Zuko is being helped and saved by someone who genuinely trusts and respects him. It would be long and complicated but if it was done correctly I think it would have the potential to be better than Zuko's. If you can't tell she's my favourite characters
One thing why does everyone forget Sokka and Katara's father is the chieftain of the Southern water tribe she is princess just like that northern crush of Sokka

Doesn't Azula sorta have a redemption arc in the comics? I mean after they find the whole mom stuff out and her getting probably the largest breakdown ever it did seem to slowly get better.

You should totally do a reprise! Like Zuko talking back to Azula after he won the battle. Maybe he could go like: “You were born to be a ruler, I was lucky to be born.”
“You're a quitter and a loser while I will see this through!” Unlike the rest of the song, I think she was singing this line in particular to Iroh. Not only because she called him those two things back in the main series, but it also says how, while he gave up capturing Ba Sing Se, she did it singlehandedly.
I LOVE how deep and detailed you got in your word choice. You really elicited the inner devastations of their sibling relationship, and the slower tempo acknowledged the sadness of their reality. You really did Azula and ATLA justice. 🤗makes me so happy!
Such a wonderful song. The music gives me chills, the lyrics have just the right amount of Azula's attitude and determination, and the voice expresses her emotions so perfectly, I can almost imagine her singing this while having a hallucination of Zuko. People who just happened to stumble across this won't be disappointed with the beauty of the song, and ATLA fans will enjoy all the references to the show. A truly unique masterpiece.
So this was incredible- the melody, the lyrics, everything is both so fantastic to listen to and a very Azula mood. It inspired me to write a sort of... reprise from Zuko’s perspective. Outmatched [reprise] Here we are Darling sister How pathetic you've become You used to be so special You had so much potential To be greater than anything we had ever seen I was exiled and a traitor But better that than a wannabe dictator And while I don’t think we’ll ever agree I’ll be better for this nation than you’d ever be You're outmatched Darling sister But I’ll still give you this one last chance to decide Abandoned by your thought-loyal crew Are you strong enough with only this burning blue? You were born to be a ruler And I was lucky to be born But at least I’m not a flickering second born And now I’m friends with the Avatar And his ‘dim-witted’ bunch I’m stronger with them to help me But I think I have a hunch You were invincible, and inimitable And it’s the reason you won’t win Because you might have been a player But you’ve been betrayed by your own kin You’ll never be more a monster or a psychopath Than our predecessor when We were children in the face of our father’s wrath This was not the villains debut I was always compared to you You were never a quitter or a loser So we will both see this through You're outmatched Darling sister But I’ll still give you this one last chance to decide Abandoned by your thought-loyal crew Are you strong enough with only this burning blue? You were born to be a ruler And I was lucky to be born But at least I’m not a flickering second born History will say you’re a monster And I want to disagree Even if father taught you evil You don’t have to be You were born to be a ruler And I was lucky to be born but at least I’m not a flickering second born
...the lyrics AND the performance sent shivers down my spine. I was expecting a super-hype, rock type song but Azula really wouldn't go for that, would she? Definitely the perfect song to encapsulate this character, I love it!
Why can I imagine Azula singing the first half of the song in a more prideful tone because she's proud of being all those horrible things and then eventually, while the song is going into the second half, it's like she's trying to convince herself that she still is powerful and born to rule while she keeps spiraling down into insanity and around 3:25 is when she would be fighting against Zuko in their Agni Kai. The tone for the song kinda gives me a sad feel to it because even though she was a sociopath, she was still a kid who was brought up in an abusive and toxic environment and thought her father loved her and her mother hated her when in reality, her mother did love her. Eventually, her own friends betrayed her because of her use of fear to control them. And then she realizes that her brother who was hated by her father and deemed a traitor stood in front of her with a group of friends beside him while she had no one. Damn, I love Azula.
1: Here we are Darling brother How pathetic you've become Not that you were anything special, You didn't even have potential, To be half as great as me... You're an exile and a traitor, I'm a soon-to-be dictator, and I think we can both agree... you look better in an apron serving tea... Chorus:You're outmatched! Darling brother, So you better run and hide, Get your pathetic little crew, Yeah my flames still burn blue. I was born a ruler You were lucky to be born I burn hot while you're a flicker of the second-born 2:So you're friends with the Avatar and his dim-witted bunch You think your posse can stop me? They can barely land a punch.. I'm invincible, inimitable, and I sure as hell will win! because you're not even a player and you never have been 3:So you say I'm a monster and a psychopath because I laughed when pretty boy couldn't take his daddy's wrath! I'm the villain, yeah, it's true! Don't compare me to you! You're a quitter and a loser While I will see this through! Chorus :You're outmatched! Darling brother, So you better run and hide, Get your pathetic little crew, Yeah my flames still burn blue. I was born a ruler You were lucky to be born I burn hot while you're a flicker of the second-born 4:So you say that I'm a monster... Well I don't disagree, Even my mother thought me evil. So evil I'll be. I was born to be the ruler You were lucky to be born! I burn hot while you're a flicker of the second-born!
Why can I see Mai and Ty Lee singing the harmony and like, flicking ribbons in the BG and being all sexy and evil-looking while Azula absolutely ROCKS some hip poses with dramatic lighting. Also the “Even my mother thought me Evil, so Evil I shall be.” Hits WAY too hard. Gives me “You want a monster? Fine. Here she is.” vibes. And I LOVE IT!
First off: I just found this and recently watched this amazing show for the first time and wow this is amazing. Also, I just realized where the "You're a quitter and a loser" line came from when I was rewatching Zuko Alone with my best friend today.
this is a fudging masterpiece, an absolute WORK OF ART. the lyrics fit Azula to a tee and your voice matches her calm, yet threatening, disposition perfectly. amazing, truly wonderful, good job.
Just the swing in this song mixed with the sinister lyrics makes it so scary and yet jazzy feel at the same time and it's so conflicting to fell compelled dance
i love this! azula is such a great character (even though i wish she had been redeemed) but i was wondering what you meant by "a flicker of the second-born," because it's a common misconception that azula is older than zuko, even though she is two years younger (which i think makes her more tragic)? idk i still loved it and i thought the instrumentals (especially the trumpets) made it sound very regal, almost like an announcement of a ruler!
I think she may have meant that Zuko only has a small amount of the capabilities of the second-born (Azula since she is the 2nd child) and he stands lower than Azula
Like the comment above, I’m pretty sure since the line plays out as ‘I burn hot whilst you’re a flicker of the second-born’, it means that she is much more skilled (she’s burning hot, like a raging fire and zuko is a simple flicker, which is usually useless) whilst Zuko is hardly even 1/10 close to her skill level
When I heard that lyric I thought it was using "flicker" of the second-born to mean "weaker imitation of" the second-born, since Azula says that she burns hot while Zuko is just a flicker. To someone like Azula who takes royal blood and titles very seriously and believes it makes some people inherently better than others (the Fire Nation as a whole seems to pretty much have the divine right of kings mentality, or at least has had it enforced among them by Fire Lord Ozai), it would be a pretty heavy insult to call the crown prince, presumably the future Fire Lord, weaker than the second-born. Her saying she was born a ruler/born to be the ruler could also be seen as the misconception of Azula being the oldest/heir instead of Zuko, but I took it as her acknowledging that they'd had these differences since birth. Zuko had never fully fit Fire Lord Ozai's toxic ideals, while Azula had always embodied them entirely, whole-heartedly, with pleasure-- making her ascension to Fire Lord seem inevitable.
S L I don't know if she even could be redeemed. Her mother left when she was pretty young, and Iroh was out of the picture pretty much until Zuko's banishment. That means she had all of that time to be influenced/manipulated/abused by Ozai. On top of that, she didn't seem to have the best moral compass, and her ability to connect with others was...limited. Heck, she basically admits that Mei and Ty Lee only stayed by her side out of fear, and they betrayed her when she was about to kill people they cared about (Mei betrayed her to save Zuko, Ty Lee betrayed her to save Mei). In the comics, she is still pretty unhinged, and thinks that the only way to get what you want is through fear, manipulation and intimidation. It's still pretty unclear what happened to her after that, but I really don't think it's possible. Even Iroh admitted that she was a little too far gone ("She's crazy and needs to go down.") Still, if the world's best writer can find a way to redeem her, then I'm all for it.
@@CheshireCat-cm1si I think she still could be (though I'm gonna be kinda vague on the details to avoid spoilers for others who may read this and not have read the comics). If you take into account how young she is (only 14 in the show, maybe 15 or so in the comics) and the more clear portrayal in the comics of her remaining psychological issues, with the reader actually seeing what she sees (or at least thinks she does), then a redemption arc becomes a lot more plausible. Since she was so young leading up to and during the show, she would have been incredibly impressionable to an abusive parent like Ozai, making her actions heavily influenced by him and his ideals. This would have been moreso the case for Azula than for Zuko, because as it became clearer to her growing up that their mother favored Zuko and was wary or even fearful of Azula, she would've been more and more encouraged to listen to Ozai, who treated Zuko as lesser and favored her instead. Post-show, Ozai and his influence are removed from a position of power over her, and since she's still pretty young in the comics, it means she still has ahead of her a lot of emotional development that would naturally happen while growing up anyway. When the comics show her remaining psychological issues so clearly (and especially when they show how these issues affect her view of others' actions towards her), it helps drive home that Azula's descent into madness at the end of the show wasn't driven by anger or a need for violence, but fear and paranoia resulting from her friends leaving her. That in itself was probably so impactful because, in Azula's eyes at least, it was the same thing that happened with her mother: wariness, fear, then finally abandonment. When (and I can't really be vague about this part so MAJOR SPOILERS for the comics) Azula escapes into the forest with the spirits, it's honestly an ideal environment for her to be able to work through those issues and have that emotional development that comes with growing up. (With her extreme talent and extensive training I think we all know she's more than capable of surviving in a forest, so we can skip over being concerned on that front.) Being isolated would drastically reduce her paranoia of her family trying to thwart her, and since we know one of Azula's defining traits is her pride, her pride wouldn't be wounded by others being around to witness her being emotionally vulnerable. Plus, being in proximity to spirits could potentially help her start to heal too, either by spirits directly intervening or simply through proximity. If she eventually does heal enough to the point where she wants to engage with the outside world again, but her pride couldn't handle her returning to her family as such a different person (or if she simply doesn't want to be around them anymore regardless of pride because the original environment was so toxic and facing that again, even in retrospect, could be difficult), she could track down the Mother of Faces and get a new identity-- even leaving behind her memory if she wanted, wiping away all the memories of her trauma and misguided actions-- so she could completely start over.

Seriously.....It always seemed that it wasn't Azula that made Ursa not like her. It honestly seems like Ursa just never like her
@@BrynnSasha191 No, Azula just never knew compassion.
@@undercoverfangirl5491 good point

Even the notes ads executed beautifully with a steady enforcing voice, still not yelling since she was talking to her brother. This is a masterpiece
3 Doritos laters
Azula:Ahhhhhhhh mental breakdown Time !!!
Azula is calculative and cold, but she is definitely not quiet
"Even my mother thought me evil / So evil I'll be"
Goddamn, this is somehow both badass and tragic at the same time.
(ha. such a pun)
Ursa loved Azula until de end, with the scene of her kissing the child before going away

@@ianesgrecia8568 i suggest u watch "In your eyes" it shows a good perspective from azulas side of the whole situation

Although wrong. Ursa still loved her all the same. Every mother does no matter how disapointed they are
Ianes Grécia Yeah but Azula never realized. I wish she woke up when Ursa said goodbye. Could've totally been a redeeming factor and she never would've had to go off the deep end
@@ianesgrecia8568 That's the misunderstanding. Azula herself secretly feels she's a monster but she blames that bias on her mother.
I'm the villain yeah it's true
Don't compare me to you
You're a quitter and a loser
While I will see this through
You're outmatched

So you better run and hide
Get your pathetic little crew
Yeah my flames still burn blue

You were lucky to be born
I burn hot while you're a flicker of the second-born
So you say that i'm a monster
Well I don't disagree
Even my mother thought me evil
So evil i'll be
I was born to be the ruler
You were lucky to born
I burn hot while you're a flicker of the second-born

Shit I love the lyrics-
You got her calm collected madness SO WELL.
And your voice fits her perfectly im in heaven- this is all I ever asked for 😭
This song is absolutely stunning, I can’t stop listening to it.
Literal chills. Stunning
"I'm sorry it had to end like this."
"No, you're not."
"No, I'm not"
OMG I LOVE AZULA SO MUCH AND I CAN CLEARLY SEE HER SINGING THIS, YOU TOTALLY CAPTURED HER ESSENCE

Oh damn, that’d be awesome

That would be exquisite..
I wrote something like that! The original is him singing right after he got his scar and then the lyrics change for the Agni Kai and it’s a countermelody for this song
oH PLEASE YES
"I know what you're going to say: 'she's still my sister and I should try to get along with her'."
"No! She's crazy and she needs to be taken down!"
Me AND my cousin be like
I actually think that was one of the few times I disagreed with the writing because in the end Azula is a tragic character and it kinda feels off for Iroh, one of the most compassionate characters in the show, to be like, yes this emotionally traumatized girl needs to be taken down, no question about it.

Honestly Azula is such a well written and complex character. She’s still a villain, we love her, are terrified of her, fear her, and hate her all the same. (This is about to get long.)
(Before I get comments about hating her, I mean before her mental breakdown she was cut throat and ruthless, amazing at it. But not a very good person, easy to dislike what she’s done. I both equally love her and know she’s not a good person.)
Anywho, the fact that she was basically mainly raised by her father and grandfather, as in her more sociopathic behaviours are praised.
(To her.)
Azula knew her mom saw something wrong with her, and she saw what it was.
Your mother was right.”
But then Tylee who was passive in terms of their friendship and her demeanor, who Azula was sure that, if anybody wouldn’t betray her, it’d be her.
-----------------------
Edit:
I’d like to add something a commenter brought to my attention.

I agree with you
Yes Azula lost her mind but thats all down to the way she was treated and she is only 14 as well.Even though she is treated like a monster I do hope she has a redemption arc.

And, Reinaeiry, I ADORE the song! I got so excited when I saw a notification for this. The song sent chills down my spine - so good! I am in awe at how you can pull of the purest and softest love song like 'After the War' AND this powerful declaration of an iconic villain.

The most telling point is that none of Ursa's values such as compassion, empathy, or love became part of Azula's worldview while all of Ozai's values were core to her philosophy.

ahhaahhahah i very much want an atla musical
omg i want it soo much.

"That's a sharp outfit Chan, it could puncture a hole in an empire class destroyer, leaving thousands of men to drown at sea. Because it's so sharp."

I feel like that line where it goes “You’re a quitter and a lose while I will see this through” is kind of a reference to what Azula said when Uncle Iroh admitted defeat in Ba Sing Se. Just something I’ve noticed lol
THIS MASTERPIECE DESERVES EVERYTHING
One thing why does everyone forget Sokka and Katara's father is the chieftain of the Southern water tribe she is princess just like that northern crush of Sokka
she is my favorite too
@@sam0578 the problem here is what katara already said when they were at the northpole "the prince of what?".
the southern tribe is literally a small village at best ,they have nothing. At best Katara+Sokka are the kids of the leader of their tribe but they aren't really royalty.

“You're a quitter and a loser while I will see this through!”
Unlike the rest of the song, I think she was singing this line in particular to Iroh. Not only because she called him those two things back in the main series, but it also says how, while he gave up capturing Ba Sing Se, she did it singlehandedly.
Absolutely brilliant! The vibes totally SCREAM Azula. I love it so much!

Outmatched [reprise]
Here we are

How pathetic you've become
You used to be so special
You had so much potential
To be greater than anything we had ever seen
I was exiled and a traitor
But better that than a wannabe dictator
And while I don’t think we’ll ever agree
I’ll be better for this nation than you’d ever be
You're outmatched
Darling sister
But I’ll still give you this one last chance to decide
Abandoned by your thought-loyal crew
Are you strong enough with only this burning blue?
You were born to be a ruler
And I was lucky to be born
But at least I’m not a flickering second born
And now I’m friends with the Avatar
And his ‘dim-witted’ bunch
I’m stronger with them to help me
But I think I have a hunch
You were invincible, and inimitable
And it’s the reason you won’t win
Because you might have been a player
But you’ve been betrayed by your own kin
You’ll never be more a monster or a psychopath
Than our predecessor when
We were children in the face of our father’s wrath
This was not the villains debut
I was always compared to you
You were never a quitter or a loser
So we will both see this through
You're outmatched
Darling sister
But I’ll still give you this one last chance to decide
Abandoned by your thought-loyal crew
Are you strong enough with only this burning blue?
You were born to be a ruler
And I was lucky to be born
But at least I’m not a flickering second born
History will say you’re a monster
And I want to disagree
Even if father taught you evil
You don’t have to be
You were born to be a ruler
And I was lucky to be born
but at least I’m not a flickering second born

I love Azula and this song! I cannot wait for it, being on Spotify!!
Amazing job, Rei!

4:So you say that I'm a monster...
Well I don't disagree,
Even my mother thought me evil.
So evil I'll be.
I was born to be the ruler
You were lucky to be born!
I burn hot while you're a flicker of the second-born!
Thanks!!
Was looking for this
Haha I don't need this couse I already know all the words
Blessed
But... The lyrics are on screen already
Also, I just realized where the "You're a quitter and a loser" line came from when I was rewatching Zuko Alone with my best friend today.
that's what she said about Iroh when she was a child.
That was also the reference for the apron line, because Zuko was working for his uncle tea shop
Holy shit this is amazing! So haunting and cat like that just screams Azula! And that art! So beautiful! Nice job capturing Azula! 😍🤩🥰🔥
This has such good animatic potential, amazing vocals and lyrics plus beautiful art and action. 100/10
"I laughed when pretty boy couldn't take his father's wrath".
That HURTS....Poor Zuko! My heart!!!1
this is a fudging masterpiece, an absolute WORK OF ART. the lyrics fit Azula to a tee and your voice matches her calm, yet threatening, disposition perfectly. amazing, truly wonderful, good job.
Just the swing in this song mixed with the sinister lyrics makes it so scary and yet jazzy feel at the same time and it's so conflicting to fell compelled dance
If Azula were a Disney villain, this would be her villain song that she would sing at the end of the movie 🤩 🤩🤩🤩
i love this! azula is such a great character (even though i wish she had been redeemed) but i was wondering what you meant by "a flicker of the second-born," because it's a common misconception that azula is older than zuko, even though she is two years younger (which i think makes her more tragic)? idk i still loved it and i thought the instrumentals (especially the trumpets) made it sound very regal, almost like an announcement of a ruler!
“ i was born to be ruler, you were lucky to be born” DEAM that’s a heavy landing punch
2:15 nearly choked on my food wasn't expecting such a chord
I know i was going to cry. It sounded like heaven
