Hey guys so UPDATE! As of Jan 25 2019 the Greek Parliament voted 153-146 (1 abstained) in favor of accepting the new name of "North Macedonia" for this country. Many Greek citizens are opposed to this move but for what's it's worth this means diplomatic actions can move forward after nearly 3 decades of dispute. Let's see what happens.

What we fail to understand in the modern age is that back then, regionality was the top priority, e.g. people in Sparta considered themselves Spartans first and Hellenes second.

So how does the name "Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia" solve anything? It's just "Macedonia" with extra words... As someone else pointed out, that would be like saying "Former Ottoman Republic of Greece" or "Former British Republic of Canada" or "Former Portugese Republic of Angola"...

Albania and North Macedonia have never had a border issue. At no point in our histories has Albania ever "not recognised" North Macedonia's western border. The only issue we have had with them is in regards to the rights of the Albanian community that lives in the country, and the census numbers which have historically had a tendency of decreasing the official amount of ethnic Albanians living in North Macedonia. Other than that, I'd say we actually get along relatively well.
The people of North Macedonia are essentially Slavic (Serbian but mostly Bulgarian), about 30% are Albanians, with minorities Turks, and Gypsies. There are also inhabitants of Greek origin, a left over from the Greek civil war.

I don't think macedonian gods were greek ones, because... Many of so called greek gods were in fact originaly thracian, phrygian or pelasgian gods. And the greek laguage and script was used all around the mediterranean in some periods of antiquity but it alone doesn't mean that those peoples were speaking exclusively in greek as their mother tongue. In different texts of the pre-Alexander era Macedonians were never included in what was considered as greek tribes, and even some of the biographs of Alexander write that when he was speaking to his macedonian warriors he was using macedonian but not greek.

As of 2010, it is much easier for Macedonians to get Bulgarian citizenship because the Bulgarian authorities no longer ask them to provide a document of Bulgarian origin - which is usually some sort of a church or municipal certificate from the time of their grandparents; instead, for the purposes of granting citizenship, the Bulgarian state has switched to assuming that all Macedonians are of Bulgarian origin.

What we fail to understand in the modern age is that back then, regionality was the top priority, e.g. people in Sparta considered themselves Spartans first and Hellenes second.

Albania and North Macedonia have never had a border issue. At no point in our histories has Albania ever "not recognised" North Macedonia's western border. The only issue we have had with them is in regards to the rights of the Albanian community that lives in the country, and the census numbers which have historically had a tendency of decreasing the official amount of ethnic Albanians living in North Macedonia. Other than that, I'd say we actually get along relatively well.

It seems pretty clear to me. Macedonia Greece is a region of Greece populated by Greeks and the home of Alexander. Macedonia the country is a much newer invention filled with Slavs. There weren't even Slavs in Europe in Alexander's time. Macedonia the name is much older than Macedonia the country and have nothing to do with each other. Yes, the Greeks are right about this issue, but I still call it Macedonia. Why?
