Isn't it great how Squall and Rinoa kind of complete the love that one of their respective parents started back in the day? Laguna and Julia didn't end up together, but Julia's daughter and Laguna's son did, without even knowing. As if destiny had to set something right. And I absolutely love how the game doesn't spoonfeed information like this to you (which happens all the time these days). Instead, it rewards attentive players for catching the numerous more or less subtle and sometimes hidden hints about such connections without ever directly spelling it out. That's some masterclass storytelling right there. Similar thing with Shadow's past and his relation to Relm in Final Fantasy VI. Or tons of stuff in FFVII. They just don't tell stories like this in RPGs anymore.
I'm just now learning after 20 years who Squall and Rinoa's parents are from your comment and I've played through this game multiple times. Then again I was only 10 years old when it came out so maybe I didn't have the best grasp on the story.
@@NoxHypnoticTo be fair, it's one of those things you have to pay close attention to in order to figure it out. Rinoa's mom is dead and never named, but her father is named and they reference Julia marrying a General who comforted her after her love (Laguna) went away and never came back. I'm not even sure if they name the General or not, but I think they do. As for Squall, the only things that even hint that he is Laguna's son is the fact that Squall calls Ellone "Sis". And Kiros tells Squall that he's lucky to take after his mom instead of his father, which only makes sense if he knows Squall's parents, Laguna and Raine. Which explains Squall being in the Orphanage, Laguna was trying to save Ellone and Raine had passes while he was off. So if you missed those super subtle hints and didn't fill in the blanks, you'd never know.
@Saltyk: That's right, but there is more. Like the Moombas licking Squall's blood when he is in prison, and then calling him Laguna. It is stated that they recognize people by the taste of their blood, and Laguna spent much time at the Shumi-tribe. They obviously remember a very similar taste. The backstory stuff which Ellone provides is also relevant. Or when Squall finally does meet Laguna in Esthar, the latter says something like "I have to tell you something important when this is all over." It seems as if children take on the name of the mother instead of the father in the game. Rinoa's parents were married, and General Carway is clearly described as her father multiple times, yet her last name is Heartilly instead. Official material from Square like the Ultimania Archives do mention Julia's last name as Heartilly, albeit in brackets. Similarly, Raine's original last name is never mentioned, she takes Laguna's name after marriage as seen in the ending. This would explain why Squall is called Leonhart instead of Loire. Then there are the given names the writers chose - Laguna, Raine, and Squall are all more or less connected to water and weather, probably because they are a family. The card game Triple Triad is another hint: Guess who has Rinoa's card? Her father General Carway in Deling! Guess who has Squall's card? Laguna! Also, the booklet manual of the game says Squall and Laguna are "two men linked mysteriously by fate". And regarding the sequence of events in the story in general, everything just lines up perfectly and makes sense this way :)
The only disappointment I have with the entire Squall is Laguna’s son fact is that the two never have a talk about it. Laguna hints that Ellone told him a lot and the two needed to talk after everything died down, but they never did. And in Dissidia, neither of their dynamics has really changed, making me assume all the more that it never happened. It just makes me a little sad that Laguna probably knew and Squall never figured out his dad was there this whole time.
Same here. Especially after playing for a while as Laguna, and thinking "This guy's an idiot. A likable idiot, but still..." And the quote fit Squall's character too.
Interesting background fact for you. Seifer is always going on about achieving his dream which he 'sort of' gets, his dream was to be a sorceress' knight. What is revealed in the ultimania guide however is the _origin_ of his dream - At some point as a kid he saw a movie about a sorceress and her knight and decided that was what he wanted in life, to be a noble knight protecting a beautiful sorceress (and it doesn't take a genius to see that this is his 'romantic' dream that he mentioned during the SeeD exam). Of course the movie that he saw was the very same one that Laguna and Kiros were in. Because Laguna used a gunblade in the movie that was the weapon that Seifer chose to master and you can see that he also uses Laguna's pose from the movie when he ends a battle. So Ironically all Seifer's goals in life were based on watching a movie starring his rival's dad.
@Weston Meyer It was the first to use "real" instruments though and to have "non-game" music feeling to it and it featured a song with lyrics. To me FF VII cannot be beaten on an overall FF music debate but "you are not alone" from FF IX is probably my favorite. The prelude is the most notable melody in all of FF (as it is reoccurring and often prominent) and was in FF VII a melody that made me cry even as a child and I could sit at the PS 1 just listen to the melody at the start menu. FF theme is also a great one but often in credits. Liberi Fatali is, however, a song/melody that leaves a very strong impression and as it is one of the most bombastic it probably resonates with a lot of people that aren't FF fans. Personally, it is not a song that one can listen to on repeat and I liked "the castle" and "eyes on me" more when I was younger. Edit: One winged angel can be compared on the bombastic feeling but not as it was presented in FF VII as it was not an orchestral piece. In modern versions, such as in Advent children it is notably stronger (even though the presentation against sephirot in the original was a masterpiece) but FF VIII made Liberi Fatali loud, in your face and the first impression so it is not strange that people remember it fondly if they liked FF VIII.
Fisherman's horizon still has the best bgm in all of gaming imo. And eyes on me is arguably the best and most memorable theme. People really forget about the music when they talk about ff8.
It was played as the musical choice for the women’s synchronized swimming duet from the Americans, Alison Bartosik ans Anna Kozlova, in 2004. The routine garnered positive results and the women received the bronze medal.
52:59 the level of detail in Rinoa's coat is just incredible, that has always been my absolute favorite shot in the game and it still holds up almost 25 years later, they knocked it out of the park. So impressive.
After finally playing it, I agree. The music is incredible (2nd best to 9), the story pretty ambitious and the game doesn't let up once it gets going. I liked the characters too (doesn't top 9's tho). Junctioning is kinda weird at first but once you understand it, the game has so much freedom. And I didn't even get too into cards. I started a second playthrough and I find it kinda hilarious and amazing how Triple Triad can change the game. It's also basically the only FF minigame that doesn't suck, so I can appreciate it for that
Laguna and Raine are the parents of Squall. Julia and General Caraway are the parents of Rinoa. And yeah Julia was the first love of Laguna and "Eyes on Me" was the song that Julia dedicated to Laguna.
My favorite scene in the game is when Squall is carrying an unconscious Rinoa on his back across the land and he stops at an empty bridge during sunset and sets her down beside him and he sits there talking to her and telling her some of his feelings, but of course she's not conscious to hear it
@@Mscape7 Um ok? Im not sure why you took the time to come on a playthru video you think is uncomfortable cheesy trash then spend time replying to people who love the game, and making sure they know how you feel
@@minilabyrinth As fanbois can often overlook ridiculous rubbish. The battle system is fun. The storyline is beyond bizarre and ridiculous. 17 year old romance, unprofessional elite soldiers, orphanage, urgh I could go on. It is an absurd comedy and not to be taken seriously.
A lot of people totally never figured out what Laguna means to Squall. He is Squall’s father and Raine is Squall’s mom. There is a collectible that follows Laguna’s story off camera, I think its the timber maniacs magazines.
There is also the scene on board Ragnorak when Laguna and co are on board where Kiros says in an optional convo something like "You look like your mother, good thing you dont look like your father"
allypezz you have to consider that the general consensus is that ff8 is in the bottom of the majority of people’s ranking of ff games the reasons being that they didn’t like the junction system, squall being too much of an edge lord, other characters around squall were considered pretty weak character wise and the majority of adult players don’t really like reading or watching teen angst stories. So they pretty much skimmed through the story line not digging too deep into the lore.
@@HandsomeBob1 "squall being too much of an edgelord". I don't understand why Final Fantasy fans would use that argument. Final Fantasy VII is the most popular game of the franchise but Cloud was an edgelord at the beginning as well.
In case this hasn't been said in a comment, Eyes On Me is a song Julia made when talking to Laguna in her hotel room. When you read the lyrics, you will feel the love and sadness 😭
It's one of the two songs you can play at Horizon if you chose the good instruments. Rinoa is saying something like she love the song but they are slashing it
I mean, let’s be real, the game is obtuse as hell. A lot of its systems are needlessly complicated and require boring draw grinding to get strong. The most effective way to play is trying to stay as underleveled as possible. The story is pretty melodramatic and rushed at the end, leaving a decent amount of things poorly explained to the point that multiple fan theories were created to make the game more coherent and thematically consistent. I literally could spend hours complaining about this game... I also love it to death, so, you know, who cares. It just really depends on how much you care about certain things and what you’re able to look past, because there really is a lot to enjoy.
@@Zakemaster I heard some people had a problem with the fact the party grew up in the same orphanage but didn't remember each other and by extension, the ending. I don't get it. It spells out how bad the memory loss is. GFs just slurping up those memories super bad. All Squall had to get back to his own time was to remember the place or Rinoa, which he forgot, resulting in him getting lost in time.
The ending was so hyped during stream it was unbelievable. Congrats on finishing the game. The story was really good and the ending was totally worth it. Also I really like your hair. Amazing video and keep up the great work Sarah.
Tbf there's no natural way of saying that in English, while it's probably a natural phrase in Japanese. Even in my native language you can say the equivalent of "that pathetic married couple" in an angry tone and it won't sound unnatural at all.
@@gemgem24able In French, he just says "Those old pathetic lovers" and it works way better to have that revelation with Cid a few minutes later, because you still think you've been played all along.
this game is so meaningful to me. It is part of my childhood. For squall really relate to me so much who always alfraid of being alone yet choose to being alone and quiet myself. He is my game crush and his love with rinoa also my standard of love ever since i was a child. I love this game too much.
Squall was my spirit animal when I was younger. I was never as much of a dick as he was, but... I relate to his attachment issues a little too well. In fact, if I'm honest, part of me probably still feels that way.
38:48 "RAWR X..." killed me several times. that reaction is so hilarious. laughed too hard xD would be funny if ultimecia just random dropped it for real. *fighting* ..*rawr xD* greetings from germany
I love how everyone just falls in love with Laguna and especially his theme as soon as it switches over. They should have given us more time to play as Squall's Dad
I love how naturally you played this game. As a longtime fan I've played and replayed the game so much that stuff like newbie mistakes and bad junctions or missing stuff... it's just not a thing for me anymore. Your lovely playthrough reminded me of simpler, more enjoyable times. Thank you
Its so easy to forget that you can leave Balamb without 3000 HP and 100 Death junctioned to your St-Atk using Squall's second best weapon because you spent five hours playing triple triad XD
I'm so glad you liked 8!! I got into FF myself after meeting the characters in KH, and Squall's was the first I fell in love with--the cast is so colorful and I adored the story. It gets a much worse rep than it deserves, even with its flaws and it's nice to hear that you liked it in spite of those flaws. I was thrilled at getting the remaster, and it's so nice to finally be able to appreciate it in all its glory, and spot things like how much Squall and Laguna look alike! Anyway, this was such a delight to watch! I'm sorry I missed you streaming. Hope your playthrough of the other FFs goes well, and can't wait to see you play Re:MIND!!
Best ending to a game ever. Back in my day, they knew how to do a proper ending. That part where the camera swings around Rinoa head on the balcony, and the oboe takes over for the strings. That get's me every fucking time, and it always will. that is the best piece of music I've ever heard. I cry every god damn time. Even now as a grown man. I love this game. And Nobuo Uematsu is a God.
It wasn't the first I played, but it was the first I bought with my own money and played on release. It was 'my' final fantasy. While I fully admit it has flaws (they all do if we're being nitpicky) I still really like it. I feel like the world is more realized than a lot of the other ones. It feels less like a game-space at times, to the point that there are whole regions that barely serve a purpose to the game, whereas most jrpg world maps are effectively a line drawn from the beginning to the end.
I cried a waterfall when i played this game...... Seeing it now still makes me cry 😢 Still my fav FF EVER!!! oke storywise 6 and 9 but hey FF8 was the first FF i ever played and it's that reason that it is my fav :3
Personally, i enjoyed the junction system for one primary reason: It let's you ignore grinding (my least favorite part of any rpg) , Because of how the junction system works, i find FF8 to be the genuinely easiest final fantasy game ever made, which is nice, because you can just leave "no encounters" on for nearly the entire game and focus on the story while ignoring grinding and you're still plenty strong enough to crush Ultimecia. (though honestly, if you like the grind, go for it. A lot of people say the game is harder at high levels, and they are wrong. I've beaten FF8 at both level 7 and level 100, and there's no noticeable difference in difficulty) Also, fail: You can actually permanently defeat the mech spider thing at the beginning (If i remember correctly it even ups your seed rank by 1, not that that matters since you can get infinite gil anyway later), though you don't get the cutscene of squall stumbling and being saved by Quistis on the minigun, so you know, to each their own :P Edit: Mother of clutch indeed! Holy crap that Pheonix Pinion save though haha Further side note: My favorite part of the game is the Garden battle when the two gardens collide and Squall has to take command for the first time.
Tbf, it's the easiest FF if you master the battle system, which most 1st timers don't, so it ends up being pretty tough. I actually really liked that, I never felt so rewarded for going out of my way to make my characters powerhouses. Omega Weapon also worked pretty well as a "I see you've become as strong as possible, then let us throw everyone we have at ya"
@SarahKey I REALLY LOVE FINAL FANTASY 8! I still play it today. It is my FAVORITE Final Fantasy game. Amazing Story. It is FOUR discs long. Really cool. I've loved it ever since I played it back in 1999 when it first came out. I still love it today and remember everything about it. I'm 37 now. So, I was about 20 years old when this came to the PlayStation. Thanks for the upload. Fantastic Game all around. Please reply if you want to. 😊😊 Thanks and have a wonderful day!
The game is really really bad. They would have to completely revamp everything, from the storyline to the dialogue to the battle system. "I'm a TraInEd SolDiEr AnD I QuEstIoNed Boss' OrDeRs UnProFesSionAlLy. VeRy ImpOrtAnT MissiOn RiGht NoW, So LeT's AbaNdoN ThE PoSt To ApOloGisE.
@@Mscape7 really the battle system in the 7 remake can be carried over to others. also that's pretty much what a remake entails when it comes to revamping the story and dialogue. 8 is one of the most requested when it comes to a remake besides 7.
FF8 was my first FF when I was like 15-16. The game and OST always be my fave. I always cry and I'm so happy you experienced it. FF story telling is so special and to people who never have played a FF... I'm so sorry for your loss
Get chills and excited every single time I see that amazing intro. So perfect. This is the first time that I actually seen all the game. I never played it before but I seen someone else play some of it. Now I really want to finish that gameplay. This game is beautiful. So Squall did open up. I'm glad about that. He is my baby though. Love him so much, now I love him even more.
I feel really old saying this, but it feels REALLY GOOD to know that someone has just beat this game... 20 years after I did. It was a game I enjoyed so much in my past and honestly believed that it had come and gone. Yet here we are, still enjoyed 20 years later, it's nuts to me. I know retro gaming is making waves (ffvii remake), but to dedicate 40-50+ hours into completing a old rpg takes dedication. Imma leave this one while I work, thanks for the play through.
So happy you enjoyed this it's my favorite game! Loved watching someone get to experience it for the first time loved your reactions. Laguna is my favorite too!
Just finished a replay of this game, with the new Remaster. I originally played it around 2003. If it was not obvious, Laguna is Squall's father. He did not know it at the time, he left home, then, while he was gone, his wife gave birth to Squall and then died soon after, so Squall was sent to the orphanage. So Laguna may not have ended up with his first love but his son ended up with her daughter.
There's also quite considerable evidence that Ultimecia is actually Rinoa from the future. I'm fairly certain it's unconfirmed, but still an interesting theory and most of the evidence seems to hold up. It also helps to clear up a few plotholes in the story.
@@johant73 yes, I'm aware of their take on the story. But regardless of the intent, art being what it is, the consumer is still perfectly capable of creating their own explanations and meaning, as long as the given story doesn't contradict them. And, as far as I can tell, the given story doesn't contradict it. And, in fact, the theory not only fits within that given story, but also clears up inconsistencies and irregularities within that given story.
This is honestly very humbling. I’ve watched this video and your first play of FFVI. It was a great nostalgia for myself and very heartwarming to see someone else react to my old favorites. Keep up the great content.
I'm replaying this for my like 5th time but it's been about 15 years since my last play through. I loved your reactions as i feel like they mirror most that enjoy the ride. You, have got my subscribe.
7:55 YUP there it is, every single person reaction to the first time hearing "The Man with the Machine Gun" Nobuo really surpassed himself on this one to provide an insanely wide variety of different type music for FF8
FFVIII was my swan song for years. Such a great love story, glad you enjoyed it as much as I did. Great stream and its always fun to see first reactions to games we love.
Yup, like Seifer for exemple. He feeds Linoa to Adel, and the next time we see him, he's fishing like nothing happened. No consequences for him, at all.

Thank you so much for playing my favorite Final Fantasy game! I love it so much, you have no idea. Squall, Rinoa, Laguna... They're all just so awesome. I know this is going to be unpopular, but I love the junction system; I love how your characters are just normal people (with the exception of the Sorceresses) who are only capable of becoming superpowered by the power of the summons. Congratulations on beating the final boss; it is not an easy challenge, to put it mildly.
I think the junction system and drawing magic is quite innovative and yet counter-intuitive at the same time. The thing is, casing magic in battle has always been a very large part of Final Fantasy games. However, the thing with junction system is that since your stats are boosted by junction magic to them. This means casting magic (thus reducing your magic stock) will weaken your stats. So it appears to be both innovative and counter-intuitive at the same time.
I sometimes find time to watch your streams, but I am glad you do this. It’s not ideal as I would love to watch it in full, but I can’t complain. I loved FF8, though the junction system isn’t too great, it’s the story and characters that made me come back. I gig this game. Underrated.
I’ve always held this game dear to me but rewatching everything through here after years and years of not playing it just brought back the feels. That’s a huge reason I do watch these videos, so thank you for the nostalgia trip and thanks for the videos!
33:40 "I am the queen of clutches!" I was gonna say the exact same thing.. Especially with the FF games.. What the piss!? Like you ALWAYS win by a thread! My favorite quote on this video, "35 HP and a dream!"
I wish more people gave the game a chance. You cannot get over alot of the flaws in this game considering it is arguably a great game. I played this game so many time that I understand why people would not like it but it is still a great game to me
This is my first and fav FF game. I think it's got the more emotionally mature themes than the other FF's that I've played, and the best romance imo. It would make for a sick remake, but I'm 99.9% sure it will never happen.
Final Fantasy VIII has one of the most incredible opening themes ever. When it came out, and that animation was basically top tier? Chef's kiss. I watched it over and over, like I did with the opening of KH1.
I like how in most FF saving the world comes first and then the love story while Squall always puts Rinoa first over anything once he realizes his feelings.
FF8 being my fav, here's my (potentially contentious) thoughts on it: -Ellone is best girl. I'll fight you on that. -FF8 is a love story--if you don't like it very much, it's possible you're fond of the idea of a FF being a love story at its core. -The song Julia comes up with is the one playing during that cutscene, and is the song that plays during that Ragnarok cutscene, & during the end credits. -The junction system is cool, even though a deep understanding of it makes the game easy. -Triple Triad is best FF card game. You can fight me on that too. -Squall's got amazing character development, regardless of whether people like it, agree with that, or understand the direction he takes. -The Ragnarok is better than any other FF's 'airship', and you're factually wrong if you think otherwise (but if you like a different one better, that's totally cool--doesn't make sense though). -FF8 Shiva is best Shiva, btw.
@SarahKey Hey. It is Also possible to equip (Junction) your MAIN party with HIGH LEVEL magics so that they ABSORB all elemental magic. All Elemental magic will HEAL you, instead of doing Damage. Like, Wind, Fire Ice, Lightning, Earth, things like that will Heal you if you do it properly.
why not adding death to status attack and just go through most of the game with just normal attacks lol. And bosses? you just need to pump hp and they will never kill you. The junction system was nice because it would have made the game much easier once you get the hang of it. A bit like the materia system
Thanks for playing my favorite game of all time. I would have liked you reaction on Squall's speech on second disc and the whole Rinoa on space part. Also would've love to see you reaction when kiros and ward basically tell you that Laguna is Squall'd father.
I love this game. I got it when it first came out and played it for several months to level up characters, get all cards and make items and get ultimate weapons. Had to go back to disk 2 several times. I also got it from Steam recently, remastered. I had the cheats on this time. I fancied Seifer so bad the last time. He is still one of my fave's. I didn't realise from my recent play thought that Lacuna is Squalls father. On the Ragnarok, Lagunas 2 pals, Kilros and Ward, comment that thankfully Squall doesn't look like his father but his mother. Rain was Squalls mum, and she died just after she had him, and then he was taken to the Orphanage with Edea and Cid, as Laugna knew about the evil Sorceress Adel, and knew that one day, Ultamisea would come back, so Laguna along with Edea and Cid started Garden to defeat the evil Ultamacia. It was also interesting that Lagunas old flame from the piano club in Deling city, after laguna disappeared, she hooked up with another man and those both had a daughter Rinoa. So all the paths meet in the past.
One of my absolute favorite FFs. Top two with 7, haha. I'm one of THOSE.... but when this came out, it blew my mind and it was the first FF I beat to completion. Loved the entire journey. And damn it, the soundtrack is top notch.
The best FF ever, I played in 2000 and still miss a game like that; what a experience!!! you miss Ente Omega, and the Lionheart sword, but you give me some nostalgic time! thanks!!
It been such a long time that I heard "Eyes on you"... It really made me sad and nostalgic at the same time... Both Julia and Raine are broken and waiting for Laguna like a faithful wife waiting for husband come back from war... However both of them die early...
But did you notice the parallel later on when Rinoa's in a coma or whatever and he's begging her to come back and his snarky comment bites him in the ass in his internal monologue
@TatlTails39 You can actually see a growth over the course of the first 2 CDs like that! During that period, all of his Orphanage friends have a "freak out" moment", and every time Squall is a bit more supportive than the previous time! First there's Quistis, the scene you just mentioned, where he just ignores her and tells her to go talk to a wall and… well, he's just a d**k!!Second, Zell! In the forest, he freaks out because his big mouth may have put Balamb Garden in danger! And Squall is really not being supportive here either, but at least he answers back to Zell, he doesn't ignore him like he did with Quistis. Third would be Irvine, and his anxiety attack during the assassination mission against the Sorceress. He actually gets supportive there, and downplay the importance of Irvine's role, so that he doesn't feel like all the pressure is on his shoulders. It is noteworthy, however, that he did that because the mission depended on it.Fourth and last, Selphie, after she comes back from her missile base mission and see the Quad being destroyed and feels very down about it, Squall again gets to show empathy for her. And this time it's not like a mission depended on it or anything, it's genuine kindness. There's also the fact he agrees to take her to Trabia Garden 'cause she worries about her former schoolmates, too..So, yeah, through those 4 scenes in particular you can see actual character growth from Squall. It's something I find interesting.
Fun fact, the conversation with Quistis is the very moment whether you, as the player, love or hate Squall. The context of the conversation can be perceived as Squall being an a-hole in great need of character development or him fending off Quistis’s suggestive advances (as it is clear she ordered one of her students to be with her at the “hangout” spot of Garden). Again, it is the start of the game and you barely know anything about anyone. You can easily see Squall as either a jerk or as a BS deflector. 🤷🏼♀️
6,7,8,9,10, and 10-2 has some of the best game music and music of all time. They have a special place in my heart, I'm glad your experiencing and enjoying them.
I still miss pixel faced Squall. I really didn’t like the remaster but it’s still decent. I just wish they took the time and did a full revamp on the backgrounds
They lost the original backgrounds and all the assets used to make them. They were originally rendered on SGI graphics workstations that were not compatible with Windows or Mac OS (they used a custom unix based OS) or any other modern 3D rendering software, so even if they had them still, they'd need to have the same model of SGI workstation and spend thousands (if not tens of thousands) of hours re-rendering the scenes for higher resolutions. Even the TECHNIQUES used to make 3D art back in those days is virtually unknown to modern 3D graphics design, so they'd need to re-make them from scratch on modern systems. They wouldn't look the same at all.
Really glad you enjoyed. Did anyone spoil the Squalls parentage for you as you played? As I stated before, you NEED to play Xenogears and really experience the best of the PS1 era. Love your content!
This is going to be so cool. Watching now. Update: finished.. and LOL at RAWR. Actually Angelo's shooting star was MVP in my final fight too. I hope you got Lionheart!
@@dannysandoval5837 Lol, ok you got Irvine doing nothing the whole game no big reveal or payoff, selphie is just a dumb brat who somehow knows how to fly, Emma just turns back and is forgotten at least add her to the party permanently, also felt Squall and his sister had zero payoff same with Laguna it was all a waste of time, how did she get her ability? Idk lots of loose ends. Not to mention Squall and Rinoa I felt their love was stupid. Squall was a dick the whole game nothing interesting at all and somehow I'm suppose to care when this dumb shallow girl falls in love with him? One of the weakest couples for sure in a final fantasy game. Not to mention the combat is trash. Still like FF8 but I wouldn't put it anywhere near top 5.
@@owlcall Also, if you talk to Laguna at the end of the game when he, Kiros and Ward are on the Ragnarok, he tells Squall something like "When this is all over, we need to talk about something." It's unfortunate we never get to see that talk, though.
Great Reaction/Compilation video!! FF8 is one of my favorite games of all time! The Queen of Clutch like 5 times in that video.... 38 hp on the Edea fight.... oh my. Laguna!!! 12:28 This part had me laughing so hard
I’ve somehow ended up watching your 7, 9 and 10 play through highlight vids in full over the past week or so, and I’ve been looking forward to your 8 vid as it’s my personal favourite of the series. Can’t wait to settle in and watch this through!
Just wanna say that even 20 years later whenever I watch FFVIII intro I get chills
And even more amazing is that FFVIII was release so shortly after FFVII. They really figured put how to tap into how to use the hardware available.
You just got chills? I damn near cried, and got chills, near cry experience, I swear I was shivering, and dropped a manly tear.
The intro is what every final fantasy has tried to replicate since and failed to.
20 yr later, 8 remastered and finally I did it the obel lake xd ( thx to yt lol.. xd )
Gulyás Dávid Ditto. Whoever figured that one out is a saint.
Exactly!
Or when Squall finally does meet Laguna in Esthar, the latter says something like "I have to tell you something important when this is all over."
It seems as if children take on the name of the mother instead of the father in the game.
"I dreamt I was a moron" is one of my absolute favourite quotes in any FF game.
super LOL
Mine in "whatever"
Same here. Especially after playing for a while as Laguna, and thinking "This guy's an idiot. A likable idiot, but still..." And the quote fit Squall's character too.
Ikr. This game is a goldmine for good reactionary dialogue
Squall and Laguna are both morons. Very different types of morons though.
So Ironically all Seifer's goals in life were based on watching a movie starring his rival's dad.
wait what ? that totaly make sense why I learned that almost 15 years after I finish the game.
Holy.... Wow, thanks man, this extra info has made my christmas
Yes! Theres alot of great lore in this game

Squall is dead
Rinoa = Ultimecia

Fun fact, a piece of final fantasy 8's music(Liberi Fatali) was used for the olympics in the early 2000s. This game has a gorgeous soundtrack
Yeah, my jaw almost hit the flood when I watched the opening of the Olympics only to hear a Final Fantasy song. ^^ Nabuo Uematsu for the win. :D
Kinshira i didnt know that thats so cool!
The original game ,headmaster cid looks like robin williams
I knew he looked familiar.
He always looks like Robin Williams, no matter which FF8 version you play.
He looked like tom leykis
No amount of logic or argument could convince me that that wasnt robin williams.
Well, in FFX, there is a character looking like Rammstein's singer... 😅
"I dreamt I was a moron" I love Squall.
I remember laughing my head off at that as a kid. Squall was great.
Squall is the best!
Whatever. 😅
Imagine thinking that about your own father.
#MindBlown
@@drakeshadow7728 I was gonna say the same thing. It's funny how much trash Squall talks about Laguna, never knowing that's his father.
52:59 the level of detail in Rinoa's coat is just incredible, that has always been my absolute favorite shot in the game and it still holds up almost 25 years later, they knocked it out of the park. So impressive.
Ff8 is hella underrated in story, gameplay, and cinematics.
It's also basically the only FF minigame that doesn't suck, so I can appreciate it for that
Cinematics yes, the rest is a hard fail.
@@Walamonga1313 You saying constantly that 9 is better wtf
@@Gamingnstuff131not really
Everything except the story.
Laguna and Raine are the parents of Squall. Julia and General Caraway are the parents of Rinoa. And yeah Julia was the first love of Laguna and "Eyes on Me" was the song that Julia dedicated to Laguna.
and Rinoa is Ultimecia.
Eyes on me lyrics is about how Julia felt about Laguna. It's one of my favorite songs, by the way, Faye Wong is an amazing singer.
My favorite scene in the game is when Squall is carrying an unconscious Rinoa on his back across the land and he stops at an empty bridge during sunset and sets her down beside him and he sits there talking to her and telling her some of his feelings, but of course she's not conscious to hear it

I thought this was obvious
allypezz you have to consider that the general consensus is that ff8 is in the bottom of the majority of people’s ranking of ff games the reasons being that they didn’t like the junction system, squall being too much of an edge lord, other characters around squall were considered pretty weak character wise and the majority of adult players don’t really like reading or watching teen angst stories. So they pretty much skimmed through the story line not digging too deep into the lore.
@@HandsomeBob1 i actually thought this was a reply from my other post about someone wanting a remake. I agree with absolutely everything you said.
When you read the lyrics, you will feel the love and sadness 😭
and it's the theme for her daughter's and his son's love story
It's one of the two songs you can play at Horizon if you chose the good instruments. Rinoa is saying something like she love the song but they are slashing it
This game holds a special place in my heart ❤️

Right? I know that she's right, it is a very divisive game. But it's forever my favorite and it saddens me that so many people don't feel the same.
The music alone is worth the price of admission

"That pathetic married couple's" from Norg is my favourite extremely clunky plot point drop ever.
Tbf there's no natural way of saying that in English, while it's probably a natural phrase in Japanese. Even in my native language you can say the equivalent of "that pathetic married couple" in an angry tone and it won't sound unnatural at all.
They could have left out the Word “married“ to make it Sound less forced.

I love how everyone just falls in love with Laguna and especially his theme as soon as it switches over. They should have given us more time to play as Squall's Dad
FF8 alreday had 4 CD; it's the biggest thing created in 98, they had to cut so many things.
I really loved the romances in Final Fantasy 6-10. Everything after that is subpar to me.
The end with laguna still gets me
This was actually the first FF game I ever played.
An interesting choice for a first FF.
I enjoy this game and its seamlessly streamlined plot.
same here, ff8 was my first and still my favorite final fantasy.
Laguna is my favorite FF character of all time. FFVIII story is so clever I find more layers every playthrough.
I cried a waterfall when i played this game...... Seeing it now still makes me cry 😢
Still my fav FF EVER!!! oke storywise 6 and 9 but hey FF8 was the first FF i ever played and it's that reason that it is my fav :3
I've beaten FF8 at both level 7 and level 100, and there's no noticeable difference in difficulty)
Also, fail: You can actually permanently defeat the mech spider thing at the beginning (If i remember correctly it even ups your seed rank by 1, not that that matters since you can get infinite gil anyway later), though you don't get the cutscene of squall stumbling and being saved by Quistis on the minigun, so you know, to each their own :P
Edit: Mother of clutch indeed! Holy crap that Pheonix Pinion save though haha
Further side note: My favorite part of the game is the Garden battle when the two gardens collide and Squall has to take command for the first time.

I like how in most FF saving the world comes first and then the love story while Squall always puts Rinoa first over anything once he realizes his feelings.
Saving the world? Whatever, I want my girl!
Like a real person in love would do.
FF8 being my fav, here's my (potentially contentious) thoughts on it:
-Ellone is best girl.
I'm in the minority but I like more tetra master (ff9 card game)
5:26 I laughed so hard on this because it reminded me on Aerith in FF7 Machinabridged from TeamFourStar....."It look hurt" xD

Thanks for playing my favorite game of all time. I would have liked you reaction on Squall's speech on second disc and the whole Rinoa on space part. Also would've love to see you reaction when kiros and ward basically tell you that Laguna is Squall'd father.
“Is that where ‘Rawr xD’ originated?” 😂🤣😅
That is my all time favorite Final Fantasy game ever thank you for doing a reaction vid to it.
im not gonna lie that angelo finish at the end was so fucking clutch my nose started bleeding
To see other people vibe with the music of ff8 makes me feel so validated.
So happy you did this! Love this game so much. I didn't have a chance to watch the stream but I hope you figured out who Squalls parents were.
Man angelo was so clutch. I remember that final boss fight taking me like an hour to beat and I had to do the last phase like 3 times lol.
mine is quite quick because I got lucky with Renzokuken. that Lion Heart slices her so many times and she died so fast lol.
Rai-Jin and Fu-Jin are some of the best depictions of "loyal friends that still intervene, when it's necessary" 😁
There's so many WOW moments in this game and your reactions did not disappoint 😂
OMG I WAS JUST THINKING ABOUT THIS LAST NIGHT, WHETHER OR NOT YOU'VE PLAYED FF8, I'M SO HAPPY YOU UPLOADED THIS, AAAAA!
7:58 Really expected that reaction, it's satisfying, thank you ^^
By far the best FF, so many memories. Finished it within a week of release.
FF8 is my fave game of all time ~ your reactions are always golden ♥️
One of my absolute favorite FFs. Top two with 7, haha. I'm one of THOSE.... but when this came out, it blew my mind and it was the first FF I beat to completion. Loved the entire journey. And damn it, the soundtrack is top notch.
I feel like that Kingdom Hearts 3 ending is inspired by this ending
The best FF ever, I played in 2000 and still miss a game like that; what a experience!!! you miss Ente Omega, and the Lionheart sword, but you give me some nostalgic time! thanks!!
Daddy Squall
Daddy Laguna best Laguna 😂😂
jack wells lmao 😂
LEON!?! 12:30
It been such a long time that I heard "Eyes on you"... It really made me sad and nostalgic at the same time... Both Julia and Raine are broken and waiting for Laguna like a faithful wife waiting for husband come back from war... However both of them die early...
"then go talk to a wall." My favorite phrase in the entire game! LOL
But did you notice the parallel later on when Rinoa's in a coma or whatever and he's begging her to come back and his snarky comment bites him in the ass in his internal monologue
@@tatltails3923 That's why I like Squall, he grows as a character.
You can spam that line in Dissidia for ps4.
They wouldn't look the same at all.
his face was much cooler before the remaster
Check out McIndus mods man. He made the game look incredible
My favorite FF😃😃
Same! The emotional level is through the roof!
This was so wholesome and entertaining! Loved the video!
Congrats on beating the best FF ever!! Dont care what the ff8 haters say....
The worst of The PS1 era FF even Tactics is better. Too much stuff was left in the air and no pay offs.
Handsome Guy completely dissagree about everything you said but not argue.
@@Invincible-Under-the-Sun You.... You do realize Irvine is the one to reveal to all of them that they knew each other since childhood, right ?
@@Cacophaton Probably has #ReadingComprehension issues.
Either that or is a FF6/7 fanboy.
Final fantasy 8 was my introduction into the series so it always holds a special place in my heart.
I wonder if she realizes that Laguna is Squall's father?
Wait what!?!? I didn’t know that. I feel dumb
@@owlcall Also, if you talk to Laguna at the end of the game when he, Kiros and Ward are on the Ragnarok, he tells Squall something like "When this is all over, we need to talk about something."
It's unfortunate we never get to see that talk, though.
Great Reaction/Compilation video!! FF8 is one of my favorite games of all time! The Queen of Clutch like 5 times in that video.... 38 hp on the Edea fight.... oh my. Laguna!!! 12:28 This part had me laughing so hard
I still haven't beat this after all these years I'm trying now though. This and 12 everything else I beat
I’ve somehow ended up watching your 7, 9 and 10 play through highlight vids in full over the past week or so, and I’ve been looking forward to your 8 vid as it’s my personal favourite of the series.
Can’t wait to settle in and watch this through!
Where is her 10 video, I can seem to find it.
