I feel some of the changes were warranted because they "unchanged" certain contextual shifts that the original translation unintentionally introduced. For example, Frog's _ye olde speake_ gave the impression that he was a very proper, respectful, polite person. But in the original Japanese, he's actually much more brash and "when in doubt, hit it with a sword". He uses "less than polite" speech with most people, except *very* few individuals like the Queen. But then, when you fight Slash in Magus's castle, they treat each other very respectfully as fellow swordsmen and are each honored to fight (and, afterwards, Slash is honored to be beaten by) such a skilled opponent. But, in the translation, Frog goes from uncharacteristically polite to uncharacteristically insulting to a fellow warrior; instead of respect, it's an exchange of flaming banter. And the flashback scene to Glenn's childhood, when Cyrus chases off the boys messing with him, it wasn't that Glenn was afraid of *being* hurt. He was aware of how strong *he* was and knew that if he fought back, the *other kids* would get hurt. But that didn't really come across well in the original translation because calling someone a "marshmallow" tends to come off as "physically sensitive" rather than emotionally. But then, on the other hand, there were quirks of the translation that were not only good enough in relaying the meaning, but they also became _iconic_ (but you're still hungry). Changing those to a more literal translation gained nothing, but lost the iconic feel of the lines. So I approve of the changes that brought a better picture of the original context and avoided _unnecessary_ changes. But I don't like the changes that not only didn't do anything to provide a better or more true translation, but also lost iconic charm in the process.

I know! It's awful how it was just cut out in favor of the pointless PS1 CG in so many of the re-releases.... IMO those PS1 cutscenes only exist as a way to tie the game to the story of Cross, which is a game I appreciate the merits of, but do not regard as a real sequel or cannon or truly connected... it was certainly something aesthetically exquisite and fun and worth playing, especially when it first came out, but it does such a disservice to the original in fundamental ways, that I can't ever think of it as truly connected... more like a trippy dream to check out if one is curious nowadays, whereas Chrono Trigger will be a classic forever. I can't believe people used to serious debate about this when Cross was more relatively new... and hell, I know that feeling of wanting the new album from your favorite band to be as great as the others, and you can even convince yourself it is for a week or two... it feels so shitty to realize that something you expected to be wonderful and magical is merely another flawed creation of flawed people, and the perfect masterpiece that happened to appear previously was a rare gift, not something to ever take for granted... and eventually, it makes one's appreciation of those rare as-close-as-it-gets to perfect things that much deeper for it. Didn't mean to go on so long sorry lol
It makes me so happy how much you're enjoying this. This is my favorite game of all time, there is so much love poured into this tiny game by de developers, and that can be seen not only in the little details on the screen but the world-building, the story, the characters, and even the combat system.

@@eccemono6534 yep
Here's a quote from Yasunori Mitsuda regarding it from I think 2008 "It certainly is the first time I've seen this. I'm surprised! That's the first time I've heard of Rick Astley, and it's interesting that such a phenomenon is happening in a different country"
Now the song is stuck in my head 😂
Aww! I love this game! One of my favorites of all time. Enjoy the ride!
“Why am I so emotional”
Don’t worry we all were
Oh my god, i've replayed this game so many times during my life because it's just that good! Have fun!
I just got 2 star on a strong character's magic. She was my last one. Our mage was the last character to reach level 99, aka 2 star
This was my first rpg..This brings back memories 😊
Glad you're enjoying the game! Me and my friend started playing it on my channel a few weeks ago, this is my FAVORITE game
My favorite game of all time. "At the bottom of the night" my first song I learnt on the piano. Just a wonderful game, so glad you got to play it! All the voice acting and emotions were on point!
The final boss second phase theme "world revolution" is awesome.
What I love most about games from this era is that the music lives with me to this *day*.
My absolute favorite game of all time, and one of the major reasons I eventually went on to became a designer/developer myself😊 Hope you enjoy it!
This is one of my all-time favorite games! I played it as a kid, and just a couple weeks ago, replayed it for the first time since. I was worried it might have just been nostalgia, but it was even better than I remembered it! Especially since I can better understand certain themes now as an adult than I could back then.
Now, seeing someone else experience it for the first time is just as magical and emotional.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it too!!
Played FF7 for the first time 6 months ago....it was OK. Then played this for the first time....wow. What a difference. This is one of the finest games ever made. Need to play FF6 next.
This game, like so many other people holds a special place in my heart and will continue to do so until the day I die. I was 14 when this game came out and it got me through the most difficult months and years of my young life. What a joy to watch someone play this for the first time. Vicariously experiencing the first time moments again was truly epic and very special to me. Words can't express. Thank you for posting this Sarah, subscriber for life.
"The music is really pretty."
Be excited, this game has one of the best musical scores of all time.
Dude this game is still to this day the #1 game in my opinion. Number. One.
@@Johnny-dj4xe This game is the peak of all video games ever created still to this day.
@@bachelorsensei9437most people don't understand how this was way ahead of it's time. The 90s was sick
One of my all time favourite game i like all the story in the game 😆
It is always such a wonderful experience watching people playing a game I loved from my childhood. Thank you for letting us experience that again with you!
I emulated the game yesterday on my Android ( PSX version) and the intro alone is a whole beauty in its own.
I don’t know how I came across this channel, but this is the first video I’ve seen of yours and it was seriously the CUTEST thing! This brought back so much nostalgia and your reactions reminded me of how I felt the first time playing through. I hope you make more of these. You packed a lot of gameplay in one video! I subscribed. Instant fan!
Every JRPG is just a contest to see how fast Sarah gets the feelz =D =D
Mad props. You had all the exact same reactions I had when I played this for the first time as a munchkin. Nostalgia overload! XD
This game doesnt need a remake. It is just perfect, and i still playing it in 2021
Agreed. A modernized version would wreck what makes it work.
It makes me happy to see someone play this game and experience it for the first time. I was 10 when this game came out and it’s one of my prized possessions and I still play through it from time to time even today and pick it up every time it gets a rereleased. I do wish is could go back in time and play it for the first time. As for the music, I want some of these tracks played at my funeral that’s how good the soundtrack is. Thank you for such great memories of taking me back to my first time playing this game.
This brought back all the feels. You vibe playing this was everything!
An absolute classic. One of the best games ever made, hands down. I hope you do Chrono Cross next. It's not as good, but i think it's a masterpiece in its own right.
I have played this game countless times ... I know exactly what is going to happen and yet, i still got damn emotional while watching this video ... The Frog scene always gets me. I'm so glad you are loving it as well, this is such a masterpiece. You have earned a suscriber, love how attached and immersive you are getting, this game is just something else.
Ugh I am so jealous that you were able to experience this game for the first time. The magic of the first playthrough is incredible.
Alright, the videos for this are finally coming out! I remember watching the original streams. Of course, seeing as how I love your content AND Chrono Trigger quite a lot, they certainly brought me great joy, which I'm definitely ready to feel again right now. Also, congrats on reaching 100k and getting verified!
Where is the stream for this? I take it she doesn't archive them?
@@VirGnar Yeah, unfortunately. She does keep certain ones over on Twitch, but she didn't keep these ones, sadly. But, at least we're getting videos here.
The entire reason I subbed was waiting for this game.
So great to watch you playing another of the great classics.
I am a simple guy, I see Chrono Trigger, I hit Subscribe. Also, enjoying the pleasant voiceovers. I hope you enjoy this game, it was before its “time.”
The SNES intro is SO much more of a hype.
Agreed, SNES opening was better.
The music sounds so beautiful I'm so glad that you are excited to play this 😊
It makes me so happy how much you're enjoying this. This is my favorite game of all time, there is so much love poured into this tiny game by de developers, and that can be seen not only in the little details on the screen but the world-building, the story, the characters, and even the combat system.
This makes me want to see her play Xenogears
I remember playing this when I was nine in 1999 and thinking Lavos about to come and end my world lol
So proud of you hitting 100k. Can't wait till 500k and beyond!
Chrono Trigger is legit the best game of all time. I will be following along for sure.
Dear
Sarah Key, it is so nice to know that nearly thirty years after its release, this amazing title did not lose but instead has maintained its value. Hopefully, if the rumors are true, Square Enix will remake this incredible JRPG. I wish you and your channel continued success. Have a great day!
This is the best coincidence ever. I just started a new playthrough 3 days ago and now you're playing it for the first time. I hope you keep this going.
This is my most favorite game ever! So nice to re play from you
Fun fact, Akira Toriama was on this project! The art IS from Dragon Ball
Oh my god. To experience Chrono Trigger for the first time. Lucky you!
Frog is the only frog I've ever liked. Best teammate hands down, in almost every RPG I have ever played. Healing, dope double and triple techs, and top tier offense? Game, set, and match. Im 33 now and i played this when it came out, the nostalgia and music hits hard. One of the best games ever made, I hope they remake this game. It deserves it.
of course you love the music , its yasunori mitsuda the legend of xenogears and xenoblade ost
I counted 12 different times the music was complimented.
Excuse me you all I just want to say that Nintendo has created some of the most creative video game consoles and video games of all time.
RIP Akira sensei
If you didn't know, Akira Toryamia did the character designs for this game. That is why the feel is Dragon Ball. This game's soundtrack was mainly composed by Yasunori Mitsuda with a little help from Final Fantasy mainstay Nobau Uamatseu. Mitsuda couldn't finish the soundtrack due to stomach ulcers. 9:55 IT IS NOT SLIME, IT IS MUCOUS
Omg, I'm so jealous you get to experience this game for the first time! It's so great!!
Yes! The Chrono Trigger! Must follow up with Chrono Cross
This would make such an AMAZING live action TV series.
Oh, my... It's so incredible to remember the first time! I feel even silly getting emotional again after years and having played hundreds of times...
I cant wait for more of this series! I cant believe this game has never been on my radar before!
In all these years, I never knew you could close the curtains in Chrono's room!
