    Why not compare him to Baker Mayfield tho?

    • @StrongOpinionSports

      Because there is no comparison, Baker had way better stats. The point was that people are bailing on Josh Rosen even though he basically had the same numbers as Josh Allen and Sam Darnold, yet nobody is bailing on Darnold or Allen. Comparing Rosen to all the rookie QBs wasn't the point.

    One thought on the missed reads. Right before that you talk about bad playcalling. I think people underestimate how much the bad playcalling can hurt the ability to make those reads, especially in a rookie quarterback. If you're constantly winding up with plays where your first and second reads are no good, you sort of start to lose trust in the plays themselves. You go into a play with no confidence that the first or second read will be there, and soon you're not even bothering with trying to read. You start guessing. You start throwing to guys because you just like the route itself, not because its what's actually going to be open. Your brain starts doing things like "we've had good luck on in routes today, so lets throw it to the guy running the in route." Conversely, if the play calls are often right, and your first or second read is open because of it, you stay focused. You get into a rhythm, and soon you're moving through your reads even faster. Getting through to the third read when its necessary stops being difficult. But that's fueled by confidence in the playcalls working.

    • @BigIronEnjoyer
      @BigIronEnjoyer 5 лет назад +16

      @John Failphins I don't think you can reasonably expect rookie QBs to be able to do that. But my opinion doesn't really matter there, the fact is NFL coaches never give rookie QBs that kind of leeway.
      Even a guy like Patrick Mahomes is still on a relatively short leash in terms of what kinds of pre-snap adjustments they're allowed to make. If the Super Bowl is any indication, its the same story for Jared Goff. Difference is, both those QBs have exceedingly competent coaches putting their players in advantageous positions.
      Going back in time, even guys like Manning or Brady weren't really making big changes at the line until several years in to their career.
      The problem is that this kind of thing snowballs. If you're regularly in a situation where you've got the worst possible play call for what the defense is doing, it doesn't really matter if you can read what the defense is doing. That kills confidence, and makes it difficult to keep on making the right reads as you start second guessing everything.

      This might be an unpopular opinion, but going off of what you said, I think bad playcalling and coaching is what killed Ryan Tannehill. He was raw as hell coming out of college as a converted wide receiver, and until Adam Gase came along, he spent his whole career with coaches who treated him like Rosen was treated last season. I think it's too late for Tannehill at this point to turn it around, but it definitely isn't for Rosen if the new coaching staff puts him in good situations and let him get comfortable. The #1 killer of good QBs is bad coaching, and I think we're seeing it more and more with these inexperienced head coaches throwing rookies into the fire.

I believe Rosen will do well with the Dolphins as the focus will be on a ground game first allowing play action similar to the Rams offence. Agree on not giving up on a guy you just drafted. But the rookie numbers he showed were different, 58% you have some promise, 55% you are entering a scary area in either accuracy or taking too long, and 52% is entering historic bad area for a high first rounder with 2000 yards of throws. I would say even TD/Int is good for a rookie, again he is in scary territory but you would have to look at the interceptions to know. Interceptions late in a game or last drive of the half are not as weighty, interceptions inside the red zone from around the 50 aren't as bad because making plays into the red zone from that position on the field translates into points, it better to have 1 TD and 2 Int in the red zone over 3 punts.

    Thanks for the great breakdown. As a die hard giants fan I've been forced to think a lot about Rosen the past week. I have a few thoughts after your analysis: one, I don't understand how so many giants fans think Eli needs to go and that a Rosen arrival would signal the salvation of our franchise. Eli is completely immobile, that's a big problem, but that's kind of where his problems end. All the myriad mistakes you described Rosen making, Eli makes none of them. In fact, Rosen's weaknesses are Eli's greatest strengths: he has an extremely high football IQ, checks in and out plays seamlessly and accurately, goes through his progressions quickly and delivers the ball on time, he knows his defenses in and out and assigns his protections with ease. I fail to see how swapping Eli for Rosen would result in a huge uptick in the win column. Two, what the hell? Last year we were told Darnold, Baker, and Allen were more of the brash gunslinger types, but Rosen was a high intellect prospect with a beautiful throw. After this analysis it appears his Achilles heel thus far is his football IQ and processing speed, his supposed strengths... that's not good.

    Thanks for not throwing out platitudes like the goofballs on First Take and other sports talk shows! It's good to hear someone that understands the game and playing the position! Kudos

    Takes 3 years for a college QB to learn to play in the NFL. Bradshaw, Manning, and Elway all in the Hall of Fame, did not set the NFL on fire in their early years.

      Patrick Mahomes definitely benefited from learning from Alex Smith. Stability from the GM all the way to the lowest assistant coach makes a huge difference too. Its better to be a late 1st round pick at QB, so you can avoid the terrible organizations.

    Giants should trade for Josh, one year under Eli would benefit him and then he can take over the offense the next season

    I'm not a cardinals fan, but I was still interested in a breakdown since he was drafted so high. I came away very impressed with this video. Professional, objective and detailed. Liked, subscribed and hit the bell.

    I never understood why in any sport if a player drafted in the first round does not produce eye popping numbers and perform at an all star or pro bowl level in their first season teams and fans especially want to give up on them and say they’re garbage and move on. It never makes sense; it’s their first time playing at the highest level possible and obviously mistakes and growing pains must come and be worked out. He’s played 14 games and was on a very bad team, he must be given time. Keep Rosen and take Williams,Bosa, or Allen. Rosen will get there...

    Love this breakdown on his first year. Alot of people moved on from Jared Goff his rookie year and look at him now. The rams were smart and got a good offensive coach who played to his strengths. Hopefully the cardinals or another team can do the same for Rosen.
