  • Water surface tension science experiment using a white plate, water, ground black pepper and soap or washing up liquid. Watch the black pepper scatter as you break down the water surface tension using soap. Easy to follow demonstration which makes a fun magic trick.

Another well done video. If you ever have an accidental spill of oil into a body of water(Usually from a boat), the liquid dishwashing detergent will disperse the oil in the water the same way. Does an excellent job.

The pepper sits on the water because of the high water surface tension the water molecules are strongly attracted together, when we add a lil bit of soap we break down this surface tension and the top layer of water molecules quickly spread out carrying the pepper with them

I am pleased to see him trying out new stuff. However, his explanation in the video is not meticulous enough.
So let's view the world microscopically. Soapy detergent has a hydrophobic hydrocarbon tail and a hydrophilic ionic head. With all due respect, the soap molecule resembles a sperm. The sperm 'head' stays at water surface and the sperm 'tail' protrudes from the water. Each molecular pillar of soap separates individual water molecules on the surface, thus eliminating surface tension.
