Thanks, You Just Saved My Mac mini M1 I got my Mac mini M1 on Nov. 23 from Costco. Almost immediately, I began getting random kernel panics -- freeze, magenta screen, reboot. I tried to run Apple Diagnostics, but the progress bar froze at the end of "Checking" in the text above it. That led to a week-long research project as I learned how to use the power button to get into Recovery, etc. Finally, last Sunday I contacted Apple Support. After running through all kinds of checks, etc., the Advisor suggested I erase the SSD and reinstall macOS Big Sur. Then he wished me good luck in reinstalling Big Sur and we signed off. Looooonnnnggg story short, on reboot my Mac mini had the personalization error, there was no user, no password, etc. 6 more advisors, 4 hours in online chat and 2 hours on the phone with Apple Engineers and three days later, I packed up my Mac mini and was planning to take it back to Costco for a full refund. The Apple people said I had to take it in to an authorized Apple service center or Apple Genius Bar to get it repaired. Hah! They soon discovered that meant an 8-hour round trip from my northern California home. So as I was stewing about this M1 mess, I browsed the Internet to see if anyone else was having problems with the inability to reinstall Big Sur, kernel panics, Apple Diagnostics that didn't work. After a while, I was about to give up when I stumbled upon Mr. Macintosh's video showing how to do it. The key? Get to "Erase Mac". I just finished following this procedure and my Mac mini M1 is installing Big Sur. Wow! I sure hope Apple Support would hire you to train its advisors, Mr. Macintosh. Oh, by the way, after my Mac mini was activated, I shut it down and booted from a Big Sur installer thumb drive that the personalization error prevented use of before. Wow! Wow! Wow! Thanks!
Jim, wow.... what a crazy journey and sorry that you had to go through all that. If we wanted to look at the good things, you have now learned a lot about your new Apple Silicon Mac! I'm just glad that you found this video and are back up and running again! Enjoy that M1 Mac Mini, it's fantastic and will last you a long time.
@@Mr.Macintosh Yes, I've certainly learned a lot more about Apple Silicon. It's going to take awhile to learn how to speak the new language. The reason I got all bollixed up is that when the Apple Support advisor told me to erase the SSD and reinstall, I naturally went to Disk Utility and did the deed. That was not only WRONG, it almost was fatal. Until I saw your video. I was quite stunned to learn that the "Erase Mac" utility actually was the way to "activate" my Mac mini so the reinstall of Big Sur would work. So why doesn't Apple explain that Apple Silicon Macs have to be "activated", like putting a SIM card in an iPhone, before they can be loaded with an OS? More fun ahead, for sure.
This happened to mine , sent it back and wanted to clear my data ended up in 3.5 hr chats with apple support. Very poor and I have an iPhone and iPad , expected better
Thank you so much, Mr. Macintosh!! You just saved my M1 Mac mini that needed to be reformatted (corrupted Time Machine backup messed up core functionalities in macOS when restoring to the new M1)!! You've got yourself another subscriber!!! :)
I applaud you Mr. Macintosh. I had already attempted following apple's instructions 8 or 9 times. I was pulling my hair out. That "erase mac" part of the puzzle is the key. If all you do is try and follow apple's instructions, you miss it. Everything worked now without much of a hitch. The only thing I would add is that reformatting the Macintosh HD after "erase mac" can take some fiddling. I had to click on "view all" erase all containers, and then again erase the volume that would become Macintosh HD. Before going through this process it simply didn't work for me. So incredibly thankful for your help on this! Do you have a Patreon or something?
I have m1 mac and I had reseted factory reset and after that process new mac setup is appearing and when I complete that setup up i am getting trouble in setting username and password i have done this part 10 times please help 🆘 please help 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😢😢
Hello! I need a little more info, are you having problems at the setup assistant screen where it's asking you to setup your account for the first time ?
I have wiped the internal storage, no recovery partition anymore, so now how can I reinstall big sur on mac mini m1? Also I made a big sur bootable usb, but when start up, I hit alt key, no boot menu ....... What should I do? Or would apple store help me restore the OS?
Bae, take a look at this video. You need to hold down the Power button on the new apple silicon macs to get into recovery. This will allow you to click your new Big Sur USB bootable installer. ruclips.net/video/_jkbHKqOJsY/видео.html

Bro what exactly problem u faced? I was on big sur 11.1 on mac air M1 and then i erased and reinstalled macos, but everytime it get stuck on "Create a computer account" Window while setup! It says 'the name you entered cant be used' Looking forward for a reply
After using the Erase Mac option, my mac has been left in an even more unusable state since before trying it, with it needing to be revived by another Mac, not even loading into startup options without the restore message.
Hi Mr Macintosh! I have Big Slur 11.0.1 installed on my M1 MacBook Air. Will I get the error message you mentioned in this video? Please please please reply as I am really desperate!
It all depends on what you want to do. If you REMOVE the volume group you WILL get the error. If you only ERASE you might not get the error. If you follow the procedure to "ERASE MAC" you will be 100% ok for reinstall.
I’m so pissed. Have a MacBook Air 11.0.1 and getting this error no matter what I try booting from usb or built in recovery. I’m at a lose what to do. 😢
I got this error on Macbook Air M1 ... I Created a Bootable USB as advised by apple, and no result. But the method at 5:30 of reset password / Erase Mac worked for me :)
Just tried to update to Big Sur and I have 1 TB of data, macbook prob15, and it’s causing it to get stuck in a boot loop? It keeps going back to 29 mins download page then it goes to a target disk start up page and repeats, every time i shut it down...if i follow these steps in the video, will this erase my macbook clean?
Amber, is your mac encrypted with FV2 ? If so we are in a bad place. If not, all you need to do is clear some data off your hard drive so the installer can finish. You can boot it into target disk mode with another mac or delete some files in terminal with macOS recovery. I am working on an article and video for this now.
This problem went away but now I get PKDownloadError 8 (this all came from an erase and install). Apparently this is from unable internet. However, my speeds check out fine but for some reason it times out when installing Big Sur. I tried the terminal, started off strong and got dial up speeds. I would love to know what got deleted by accident to avoid this happening in the future. Multiple calls with Apple Support and the "best" response I got was the firmware got deleted and they need to hook it up to a Mac with the OS already installed. Didn't even have the laptop one day.
I followed the normal instructions and got the normal error message near the end. I could not use the DFU mode as my MBA kept asking for my apple id and password. In the end I tried this method I still had to enter my apple id as it kept saying the MBA was linked to an apple ID I needed that to get into the utility menu. I erased the the untitled volumn and renamed it, just hoping when BigSur installs its a clean machine as I am returning it. If not, do you have any suggestions how I can get my Apple ID off it?
Paineys, as long as the system is not activation locked you should still be able to erase it. DFU Restore should still work and will let you do the restore.
@@Mr.Macintosh I could not do a DFU restore, it would not connect! After I started in restore mode I only got the gear wheel, no Disk icon just a spinning wheel, in the end I clicked on the gear wheel and it said the machine was locked to an apple id and requested me to enter it and my password. Once I done this I saw that the recovery assistant menu options was there. I tried the terminal reset but that didn't work! I then tried the erase option, that worked, then went into disk utility and erased and renamed as per your video and then installed BigSur ....phew it finally worked, I was getting concerned but finally got there.... friggin nightmare!
Matthew, it's possible but that's why I have to offer multiple ways to do this as the USB installer way works for some but others need to run the "Erase Mac" way.
I didn’t have a bootable flash drive that was big enough so I had to resort to the second method which worked for me. Follow the instructions exactly as mentioned here in the video and it should works for you. My screen shows Big Sur Beta Downloading 1hr 1min remaining. Thank you MacBook Pro 512 GB 8GB M1
My issue now is safari is still pulling the Big Sur beta version and I want 11.0.1. After I logged in, I deleted the beta profile and now I’m going to repeat the steps and see if downloads the non beta version of Big Sur.
Hat worked , thanks a lot for the video ! I have directly used the second method shown due to not having a second Mac . Had the update 11.01 already but the normal method didn’t work for before . Tried and failed before this video over 3 times .
Please help, it's not working. I installed the beta but want to downgrade to 11.0.1. My machine continues to believe it's running 11.1 beta. I followed all the steps, and when I got to the end to install the 11.0.1 on from my bootable drive, I got the error message, "This copy of the macOS Big Sur installer application is too old to be opened on this version of macOS." When I copied and pasted the long terminal command, I got error messages inside Terminal before I hit return. The code was divided into several lines, each preceded by "-bash_3.2#" in terminal. It's saying that it's unable to find the file directory. What do I do? I literally cannot get into my Mac because the original drive was deleted and I can't install the bootable.
@@Mr.Macintosh Yes, that’s correct. I signed up for the beta, downloaded it, had performance issues , and now want to downgrade to the fast factory software. 11.0.1 was the so-called shipping software. However, the downloaded bootable may be 11.0.2. That doesn’t matter.
@@Mr.Macintosh I should add, I have unenrolled from the beta through the proper channels under the direction of Apple Support. Neither the engineers nor the senior advisers was able to do anything. I’m scheduled for a Genius appointment on Monday but am trying to avoid it by solving this earlier

I'm having this "failed to personalize" error message while attempting to upgrade 11.6.1 to 11.6.2. How does this solution work if the re-install option in Big Sur 11.6.1 recovery mode is to install Monterey and not Big Sur? Which Big Sur update changed the re-install from Big Sur to Monterey?? I suppose you can't re-install from recovery and have to create a bootable Big Sur 11.6.2 installer instead.
I have tried using terminal and typed resetpassword , but I get " could not verify credentials because directory server does not support the requested authentication method". Any ideas ?
I typed "resetpassword" and then it let me choose 3 volumes to recover (Macintosh HD, Data and macOS Base System). I choose all of the volumes, but it said: "There are no users on this volume to recover". What can I do for it? Please kindly help me
@@Mr.Macintosh Yeah I returned my MBA to Best Buy to get the base model, but I didn’t have time to reinstalled the MacOs.
Thx, This video just saved me a week waiting to get into the local Apple store Genius Bar. 🙌🍎💻👍
Glad I could help Matt!!!
Awesome! Glad you got your Mac Mini up and running again Richard!!!!
Hello! I need a little more info, are you having problems at the setup assistant screen where it's asking you to setup your account for the first time ?
thanks I had fixed that problem from your video tutorial thanks allot 🤩
Why did I just watch this hole video WHEN I DON’T EVEN OWN A MAC
WOW BRO! MR MACINTOSH THE BEST! YOU SAVED MY LIFE!
@@Mr.Macintosh Thanks I googled it out, but I don't have recovery partition anymore, I installed a copy of big sur onto a external ssd, then I formated the whole internal disk.... Now I can run big sur from the usb ssd, but I can't install big sur back onto the internal ssd, during the installation, after select target partition, installer would say "no users available for authorization" .... I guess I just have to wait and see how others fix this problem... :(
@@Mr.Macintosh Hi just to say thank u I followed your guide about DFU mode and now my 2020 m1 mac mini is back to run!! I restored m1 mini with my 2011 mac mini with patched catalina and apple configurator 2. Thank god I could still install patched catalina onto my old mini.

Today, I tried USB installet, online download, Terminal Download, everything right in front of the an Apple Genius. But all failed.
Now the laptop is in their hand. I wish I had bought it from the Apple Store. In that case, I could just return the laptop and buy a new one there.
What a bummer Eason. Hopefully they will be able to fix it really soon for you!
Dang, I bet if I take my m1 mba to the apple store they won’t be able to fix it either, and i bought from bestbuy so i cannot even refund it

What if there is no option to reset password as it has been deleted already? is there any other codes that i can use in the terminal to proceed?

The steps you showed on the video, worked for me. I could finish the install and you saved my laptop. Thanks a lot man. Ps. Its the Macbook Air M1 base model
Awesome news Cengiz, I'm glad you got your MBAir back up and running again!
What problem were u having before? the “an error occured preparing the update. failed to personalize the software update. please try again “ ?? cause that’s what’s happening to me and i don’t have another mac to fix this :(
@@sonicgirl3582 Did you view the video ? Mr. Macintosh explained everything in this video for people like you who don't have another mac. I'm still waiting for our MBair to return from the store.
@Bart Vranken - I watched the video and followed step by step but when I got to retitling the “untitled” to “Macintosh HD” i still had the “Macintosh HD” but when I went to click on it, it says “not mounted”. I am scared that I messed it up even more. I’m so frustrated:(
UPDATE: I ended up shutting down and closing laptop after being at it for hours. Came back to try again step by step and this time I now had an “untiltled” tab which then allowed me to rename it and finish the steps and allowed for a successful installation of macOS Big Sur :)
Waiting if it worked for my macbook air. My stupid ass deleted the OS trying to factory reset it. (I’m new to apple laptop) 🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️😅😅. Hopefully it worked.

@@Mr.Macintosh thank you so much dude!

@@Mr.Macintosh i honestly have no idea, is there a easy way to figure out if it’s encrypted with FV2? And thank you so much for responding!!
Thank you 🙏 your video helped me 😉
Glad it helped LR!
Thanks a lot. It worked!
You're welcome Ayan!
I then tried the erase option, that worked, then went into disk utility and erased and renamed as per your video and then installed BigSur ....phew it finally worked, I was getting concerned but finally got there.... friggin nightmare!
still cannot login into my MAacbook Pro M1 chip
I have mac pro mid 2014 13’’ will it work?
So if we do a clean install with 11.1 via the internet recovery are we good to go now?
Matthew, it's possible but that's why I have to offer multiple ways to do this as the USB installer way works for some but others need to run the "Erase Mac" way.
@@Mr.Macintosh So if you are downloading 11.1 via internet recovery, after erasing the Macintosh HD, you should be good.
I didn’t have a bootable flash drive that was big enough so I had to resort to the second method which worked for me. Follow the instructions exactly as mentioned here in the video and it should works for you. My screen shows Big Sur Beta Downloading 1hr 1min remaining. Thank you

Hello Lyubomir, just to be sure.. you upgraded to 11.1 beta correct? Now you want to downgrade back to 11.0.1 final/production version?

Thanks!!! You save me 🙃
