Hey guys, this is the longest most detailed video that I've ever created. I cut it into chapters so you can easily navigate to the section that you need. I know this is a super complicated issue. If you watch this video and are still confused, it's totally understandable. Even I was overwhelmed by all the different situations. I tried my best to go over each situation that you could be in. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask and I will help you with your situation. I've added 2 clarifications to this video in the comments 👍

@@Everestkitchen07 Hi Suraj, thank you so much for replying. how would you have fixed it? I ended up ordering the thunderbolt 2.0 and the thunderbolt 3 to 2.0 adaptor cables and followed the recovery steps for Big Sur by deleting the system files , taking some backup [basically making space] , finishing the installation on Mac 2014. my old laptop has now rebooted and I couldn't be happier. it cost me a lot though to get the cables so I would have been preferred a different method, but in the end it was worth it to get the data recovered.

I owe a huge thanks to you finding out that Mojave would let us access his encrypted APFS volume and we had no idea that he was running out of storage space on his main drive. @@Mr.Macintosh it’s a 2017 iMac w/1TB SSD that was enrolled In Monterey beta. On Monterey beta release 5 install did the same as your video. I erased the disk, still the same error. I have installed high sierra all the way to Catalina on different volumes but Big Sur and Monterey are both giving this issue. I just got it to target disk mode but it’s giving me an issue by not showing up on my host machine. Your video is the first one I’ve come across being able to replicate my issue. Just to update, I got into the system but my suspected volume isn’t even 10% full. So, although this error is exactly as mine it appears the issue isn’t the same. I am almost convinced this is on Apples end. I may try to copy a disk to see if that will resolve the issue.

EDIT: Clarification #2 In the 2nd part 43:50, where I talk about erasing ONLY "Macintosh HD" What I was trying to explain was that on a FileVault encrypted Mac you can use a Catalina or Big Sur Mac as the Target Disk Mode Host. I forgot to move to the Big Sur Mac to demonstrate. You also do not have to boot to recovery. Just plug in the Mac via Target Disk mode on Big Sur, then erase ONLY "Macintosh HD" once complete click mount on "Macintosh HD - Data" and the password will now work! The 2nd part at 49:25 will show you how to finish the upgrade without an erase and reinstall!!

Thanks for this very in depth troubleshooting tutorial. I have just purchased a 13” MacBook Pro M1 and am having a similar issue however, there is ample room on the 250GB HARD DRIVE. I have learned a lot from your RUclips vid above but I haven’t resolved the issue. I think this MB Pro may have had macOS Montgomery on it and the individual I purchased this from may have accidentally erased his Mac HD_Data partition. I have gone through a bunch of RUclips tutorials but none of them have solved my dilemma yet. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Bob

  • @Mr.Macintosh

EDIT: Clarification #1 - I mention an upgrade hidden partition. What I was incorrectly referring to was the hidden partition created when you run a startosinstall erase install. That hidden partition is created to hold the install data because the installer will erase the main drive. In an UPGRADE the big sur data is stored in a folder at the root of the drive called "macOS Install Data".

Hey Mr. Macintosh! We have a 2015 Macbook Pro with what appeared to be the same issue, the one difference being the error message is "an error occured APPLYING the software update" rather than PREPARING. I connected it to my 2012 Macbook Pro with Catalina through thunderbolt cable and tried the steps you presented here. I was able to access the Macintosh HD- Data folder through target disk mode and cleared out 45gigs of space. We then rebooted the problem machine and got the same error result.
I then re-connected via target disk mode to check it out and now I cannot access any of the files at all? There is the Macintosh HD, mounted with only 786KB used, 204.97GB other volumes and 45.82GB free. There is also Macintosh HD- Data, mounted with 33KB used, 204.97 GB other volumes and 45.82GB free. There is also a Macintosh HD-Data-Data, which is unmounted and when I try to mount that it doesn't accept my password. There is also two update sections, one with all the update files in it and another that is totally empty as far as i can tell.
I am looking for any guidance on what to do next? At this point I am just trying to access the files to get them somewhere else safe.
    Thank you in advance

Cannot thank you enough, Mr. Mac. I'm going to call Apple and tell them about this. They're telling people like me to erase their Macs. Now I wonder if you can help me save my bricked iPhone they told me to erase haha! I spent days searching forums, created a bootable OS on an external drive, ordered a Thunderbolt adapter and cable, and called Apple multiple times. All to no avail as the password not being accepted prevented any of those solutions from working. I was left with the devastating knowledge that I had lost years of photos. For me the solution that worked was using Target Disk Mode and connecting to my girlfriend's Mac running Big Sur. When in TDM I was prompted to input the password. The password was rejected. But the image of the Mac HD was on my desktop! I could open it and was able to erase Mac HD (not Mac HD - Data!! Don't Do that!). It took several attempts of turning off both MacBooks and restarting the bricked Mac in TDM (command + T), then connecting the Thunderbolt cable. This was a bit glitchy as sometimes I could see the Mac HD drive on my desktop and sometimes I could not. In the end, it remained on the desktop long enough to delete Mac HD. Then I started the bricked Mac in recovery mode, followed by selecting Disk Utility, then I was able to mount Mac HD - Data. I shutdown and restarted in TDM. Connected to host Mac and was able access Mac HD - Data! I moved all of my photos and important files to an external drive plugged into the host Mac.I did not delete everything I had transferred to the external drive because if possible I'd like to keep most of the files on my Mac. I deleted about 45 GBs. Just enough space to attempt to start the bricked Mac. At this stage I thought hmm, will just starting the bricked Mac really make it work again after having deleted Mac HD which I think contained the Operating System Files?? Luckily, I could go back to the sections of your video that pertained to my problem and solution to watch you perform each step. I turned it off to exit TDM. Pressed the power button normally. It went through several rotations of black screen with Apple Logo and a slowly moving progress bar. Finally I see the pink and purple shades of Big Sur OS X and I'm able to login into my user profile. Everything is as it was before I attempted to install Big Sur! Mr MacIntosh, thank you for being so thorough in detailing with easy to follow instructions all of the ways to solve this problem. You are saving so many people from the terrible experience of losing priceless data.

For other side, I had the last scenario you've explaneid, but a little different, I had to REinstall the MacOs, and created me another partition with new users and all stuff, how can I get my old user and applications set as primary for deleting this new "Macintosh HD Data" (it's different as you've explained, I can send you screen shots so you can add one more possibility to your awesome video!)

While this video was very helpful I found a much easier solution. Simply shut down and hold the option key while booting, it will then let you select the disc and sign into wifi. From there you can boot into your normal login GUI and delete whatever is needed. Thanks so much for all the work in troubleshooting this pain.

Thank you very much for this amazing video. I encountered this exact issue yesterday and discovered this morning that you posted this video on the same day. I haven't quite gotten to the solution yet because I'm pretty inexperienced with IT trouble shooting. I have an early 2015 MacBook Air so I don't have USB C/Thunderbolt ports. Is it possible to perform the Target Disk Mode solution with regular USB cables or with Thunderbolt-to-USB adaptors? I actually have two early 2015 MacBook Airs - exact same model, bought at the same time - so if the fix is possible with a regular USB connection cable then I could try that.
And if the above is not possible, then is there a way to move my files to an external drive using the terminal? You are explaining how to get to the terminal to remove some files and create space but I would prefer not deleting files. So if there is a way to move them to an external drive somehow, that would be preferable.
Thanks in advance for any help!

    • @Mr.Macintosh

Hello! The good news is, your Macbook Air DOES have one thunderbolt 2 port on the right hand side! You can use this port and a ThunderBolt 2 cable to connect both Macs together to save your data 👍If you want to use terminal in recovery you can do that also! Just plug in an external USB and use the cp or copy command. Example - cp -R /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD\ -\ Data/Users/yourusernamehere/Desktop /Volumes/USBDrive

When I took the MacBook after several hour to give it to the user, the battery was hot (the palm rest section was hot) instantly after opening the lid the desktop showed up just fine but suddenly the computer hang and booted into the logo loop again. I went to recovery mode, repaired the disk, and it booted just fine again, but freeze again and boot loop again. What is going on here?

    Here's the bootable USB method:
Reformat it to APFS and then install Catalina (you can choose another OS version) there. (notice that creating a bootable USB is different from creating a USB OS installer) Then, boot from the USB by holding Option at startup and choosing the USB. It did work the update… my problem now is that, I can see the data drive but, I can not see the files. Wondering if the issue is because the internal drive is an ssd and the external drive is mechanical one without not enough power to keep up the the internal one. Can someone help me out with this one? Do I need an external drive with a power adapter… maybe?

    Hey there,
I wanted to follow up on my old comment. So at about minute 40:00 of your video you are mentioning what to do if we dont have a second Apple device and seconds later you are pulling the Mojave device. What is left for people that indeed do not have a second device themselves nor family or friends? I did understand that I can have a 2nd device that is either Catalina or Big Sur and delete the Macintosh Hard Drive so that way the system will not be locked and we get into recovery mode. But again, I just do not have access to any Apple Mac Book device, what are my options?

Hi, please, could you do a video explaining the process with just an external hard disk? I don’t have another Mac and with the third option you provided is not working for me. Thanks

I don't understand how could you go to the Disk Utility or the recovery mode from the Error page without a second macbook(to free some space). By command + r? it doesn't work

This is going to cause me to break my MacBook in half. I’m assuming apple won’t do anything about this to fix older Mac’s without charging a bunch of money

Thank you so much! Just one question regarding fixing an encrypted mac using TDM on Catalina host mac, after I used target disk mode to free space on my macbook pro the Big Sur installation was able to complete however when I reach the setup stage for Big Sur it asks me to either create a new user or migrate my existing user (which I cannot do because that would double the storage needed). After doing an inspection in Disk Utility in recovery mode it is apparent that Big Sur has installed its own "Macintosh HD" for the OS and "Macintosh HD - Data" for user data (which in this case is empty) in its own partition whilst ignoring my existing data which is in an unmounted volume called "Macintosh HD - Data". So to clarify Big Sur has created its own volume group (Mac HD, Mac HD - Data, both mounted) and my original data and files (Mac HD - Data, unmounted) are not part of that. I have tried to delete the partition containing Big Sur and reinstall it from recovery mode however this has not changed anything. Is there any way to solve this without copying my data off the hard drive, wiping my exisiting partition and then transferring my data back onto the new Big Sur data partition?

Nayan Kad, I go over this situation at the very end of my video. The difference is that on my test the OS reconized the user and let me log in. In yours it seems to not be able to unlock the old DATA volume. Maybe you could create a new user then copy the data from your old to new. That should do the trick let me know if that works!

Finally got the right cable to connect my MacBook to the iMac. (The iMac is the one with the message). I was able to get in and move/ delete files and now it says there are 168gb available on the HD. I emptied the trash with the empty trash selection on the MacBook. Still got the same message when I tried to restart the iMac. Is there something else I need to do with the iMac HD while connected?
