Thank you for the information and excellent instructions. The installation went perfect with the Big Sur Patch, just had to figure out the kext patch for WIFI and Bluetooth. Once I moved it to my SSD and started it, all went smoothly. I am like a kid with a old but super modern toy. I have 2 x 8Gb Storage and 2 x 524gb SSD. A mid 2012 Macbook Pro. @@gfmrobb6207 I downgraded to Catalina, you can try Installing Big sur on MB 2011 if you have ssd and 8gb ram. But as Big Sur requires accelerated graphics, it takes 7-10 seconds just to close Safari, by that mean Machine becomes unusable.

Hello there: I have managed to run Big Sur on my 2008 MacBook using OpenCore Legacy Patcher instead; as mine is identical to yours (mid-2008 MacBook A1278 with the upgraded Core 2 Duo P8600) sans the different keyboard layout, it should work for yours as well.
After running the patched updater does the software updater then keep you up to date? or do you need to run through this every time? IE if you get to 11.5 can you go to 11.6 via software update or do you need to over write your system each patch?

Based on bensova.gitbook.io yours should be supported, but you may need a few more patches (WiFi patch to restore WiFi function is cited). Because yours is pretty much the oldest supported Mac, I would make a backup of all data and an external boot source before attempting. May need to update to an older OS first if you are not using APFS format already. Depends on what operating system you have already. I have a 2009 Macbook 6,1 (could probably do the update, maybe boot given enough time) and am not going further than High Sierra on it, unless I switch from my antiquated HDD to SSD, then only to Catalina. I could purchase a reasonably new refurb that would run Big Sur for a couple hundred bucks, and could update that more easily. (wouldn't be able to show off my techno-prowess, but would be more prepared for inevitable future updates.) Had to ask myself what Big Sur has that my Macbook 6.1 needs to do and that I can't do without... Anyone else have input/opinion?

You forgot to mention that PatchedSur only works with Catalina 10.15.2 or later. So first we'll need to install Catalina, and then we will be able to install Big Sur.

Your hard drive has to be formatted as APFS in order to install BigSur on it. That's why it is good to have at least Catalina MacOS on your Mac, so that it would show APFS when you have to open Disk Utility at the installation. MacOS High Sierra is probably good too to put Big Sur, as you have access to format for APFS.

I don’t remember exactly what the error message was because it was a week ago, but I did Google the error message. The result was a GitHub page. I don’t think the installer has been fixed yet.
Because, there are many people who can't afford a MacBook upgrade, or just wants to keep their old ones. You also can't install new applications or application updates provided by apple unless if you're in BigSur.

I've just installed on a late 2012 Mac Mini. All went well but when I ran the Patch Kexts to fix wifi, the button at the end to restart didn't do anything, so I restarted manually. But wifi doesn't work. I can connect the Mac by ethernet, so it's not a huge problem. But if anyone has a fix for this, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!
@@alamba78 To update the situation, I finally got it sorted out. Rather than clicking the restart button after patching the kexts, ignore it and restart manually. The wifi still shows no sign of working, but when I toggle it off and on again (sometimes more than once) it eventually works.

I got a cross after I opened install big sur (I am using a Mac air 2012 mid which should be compatible) Update:after I connected to internet the cross somehow disappeared(weird) Update#2:After i opened perched ketch I my Mac can’t spit any network And it can spot internet on the page I hold option when start but not *inside after I login in Last update(I hope): after I ran wireless diagnostics it somehow connected to my internet (I know it doesn’t make sense) at least it worked :D Thanks for the video btw Update#4:Since i can't connect to my internet requires login in i reversed the upgrade to catalina

I am on a old OS, OS X 10.9.5, to be exact. And it say's no mountable file systems, when I click on the DMG. The only reason why I am on this OS is because I bricked my Mac Mini, I had to do a sort of recovery mode by holding Command+R while starting the computer. And it reseted me to this OS. I am trying my hardest to not freak out but I know there is a way. If you can help, it would be highly appreciated. I would like to install Window's 7 or 10 so I can get back to where I was, before.

Just did the installation on my mid 2012 13. Tried Monterey and Ventura on OCLP. But this is by far the best. Big Sur works very well on this machine

if you do a network recovery boot on high sierra. it can format the HDD to APFS
I thought macOS Sierra supports APFS. It doesn't. Only macOs High Sierra and newer supports APFS.
How do updates work. Just through system preferences? Or do you need to do something special?
