Breathing underwater with no dive mask. How to be totally comfortable if your scuba mask falls off.

Not everybody is comfortable no diving mask on their face and not being able to cover their nose. In fact, many students in scuba classes I've had in the past had problems at first distinguishing between breathing through their nose and breathing through their mouth. This exercise is simply to put your face in the water with no mask on, and not covering your nose with your fingers or anything else, and then breathe through the snorkel for at least a minute.
For many people this is almost a non-skill which seems overly simple, but if you are one of the people who are not comfortable without a mask on and something covering your nose, then I suggest practicing this skill over and over until it becomes comfortable for you. There are many times in scuba diving when a mask may possibly come off. Knowing that it's not a big deal and that you can swim and easily ascend without a mask on is a good confidence builder for your scuba diving.

I had to stop halfway through my most recent open water certification class because I was uncomfortable breathing without a mask. Hopefully, by practicing this at home, I will be more comfortable and not freak out this week at my "catch-up" session. Thanks!

With a little practice I’ve learned to breath in with the snorkel and breath out through my nose. Once I got used to the rhythm I no longer get water up my nose. My advice is stay calm and don’t be afraid to get water up your nose a couple of times. Btw, I have the snorkel attached to a pair of eye googles when I do this. It is way cool!

can someone help? im trying to learn to swim underwater without plugging my nose, everyone just says exhale through your nose while under water but what about when you cant exhale anymore but your still able to hold your breath? and iv noticed in videos people do this under water without bubbles coming out so they can obviously do this without having to exhale. please help

I know my reply is waaay too late but hey xD
I heard that I should be exhaling too, but that never worked with me the best thing is holding my breath. I can go then water actually getting in my nose. tbh whenever I try to exhale it actually gets in my nose so yeah. Holding your breath is the best solution I guess.

I just bought a center mounted snorkel thinking it was going to be super easy to breath under water without plugging my nose. I was so wrong. My body has the reflex not to breath under water and when I try to, it's extremely uncomfortable and unsettling, I guess I have to practice a lot.

It's like holding your breathe, but holding your breathe through your nose. Don't worry I got your back.

For me, unless I purposely try to breathe out my mouth and nose at the same time I only breathe out one

This was the most difficult part for me during my certification. Took a few tries but eventually was okay.

I almost surfaced in the first pool session during the mask flood exercise, but I manged to stay down and clear the mask. During the second day of pool time, while others were still getting kitted up, I spent some time in the water floating face down with no mask to get used to the feeling of the water, by the time I had to do the mask removal and no mask swim I was perfectly comfortable.

Came here to learn HOW to avoid to subconsciously starting to breath even just a little through the nose for this skill.... But this video "how to" does not tell anything about the how to do it......
