We still haven't developed actual AI. What people are currently calling "AI" is just machine learning that's getting progressively more sophisticated, but it still can't really "think" for itself. It's artificial, but not intelligent. True AI, what Hawking was referring to, is stuff like Ultron or STCs.
This was before the term AI got ruined by being used literally all computer programs that are a little more advanced. Hawking was talking about what would now be called AGI, Artificial General Intelligence.
In my 66 year on this earth I have never meet an Immigrant I did not like and respect (Armenian, Brazilian, British, Canadian, Chilean, Chinese, Colombian, Dominican, French, German, Haitian, Iranian, Iraqi, Irish, Israeli, Italian, Jamaican, Japanese, Jordanian, Korean, Mexican, Polish, Puerto Rican, Portuguese, etc...).
