At a time when singer-songwriter Jewel was struggling in her career, Bob Dylan pulled her aside for a chat. What he said lit a fire under her and helped set her on a trajectory to stardom. She also tells a great story about touring with Neil Young and Crazy Horse #bobdylan #jewel #music #podcast #guyraz #neilyoung - Развлечения
“ you don’t have to be a choice to be who you are”. This makes me really love jewel, which I always did, and to love Bob Dylan.🎶💕
You have to LOVE Jewel from nothing, from sleeping in her car with her mother. . . to achieving her dream! An inspiration. A true artist never gives up. Dylan was right.
I don't think she slept in her car with mom - She doesn't get along with her - she has taken advantage of jewel -
She comes from a rich family in Alaska, she was homeless by choice! They own hundreds of acres and cows.
Get a clue !
@@smckay6438that’s exactly right. I met her at a show in chicago. She slightly c$#ty.
Then she betrayed her fans by attempting to go all Brittany Spears-y
@@smckay6438
So, you’re giving her shit for leaving her well off family, to go to LA, and survive on her own?
Imagine going back in time and seeing Jewel at the Garden shushing that big Crazy Horse crowd with her beautiful voice, pretty angel on the stage all alone. ❤️
With balls of steel kicking people out 😂🤣
Man I remember the first time I heard “who’s gonna save your soul” I was instantly hooked on this young girl no one ever heard of. Her first album was out about a year before it suddenly took off, or so I read somewhere. Her voice, her personality, and her natural beauty made me want to hear anything she did.
Jewel is great, and that was a great little interview from her; all my best to a very talented and brilliant performer
Dang. Dylan and Neil Young! Great stories.
This woman has been through the wringer and come out with dignity and grace. A gem of a jewel
Through the wringer? Shes a internationally famous and respected songwriter and artist.
'through the wringer' is about what you've been through not what you've become@@sole__doubt
@@sole__doubt Well, she is now, but at one point she was homeless and living out of her car. That's probably what the comment was referring to, and that sure doesn't sound like much fun to me.
@@qmnnvrdyz8965 She was homeless by choice to make it sound like she had a difficult come up. The sad thing is that people like you fall for it. Theres no way a woman as talented and pretty as she is would ever be homeless by necessity.
I saw her on both the Dylan and Neil Young tour, nobody knew her on the Dylan tour and she was hanging out with the crowd when Dylan played his set at the Strand in Providence. When I saw her later with Neil Young, she had exploded at that point and it was amazing. Really great songwriter and singer, I remember being blown away when she yodeled at the Dylan show, she's a great entertainer! I think she's great and it's nice to hear the support she got from two legends of the music industry. I would say she's a legend now.
I used to go see Jewel at C'est What in Toronto - I think in the late 80s or early 90s before she was well known. She had a voice like an angel, great songs and was drop dead gorgeous. I tried so hard to chat with her between sets, but she wasn't having any of me. I regret that to this day LOL. But so glad she made it as she is something special.
I used to go to C'est What often. Great place.
Wonderful. Bob being so nice to Jewel.
He is a nice person! He is just busy busy busy and he can’t greet everyone! He has so much to do!
He;s NOT that NICE. His own kids know NOT to talk to him or get close when his hoodie is up. I;ve seen him yell at a girl just for saying "HI BOB".
Anybody can be nice. @@Piggy-Oink-Oink
@@Piggy-Oink-OinkI think if Bob Dylan yelled at people we would all know it. He is known for being very respectful, he just cannot talk to everyone.
And you know this how.
Both Neil Young & Bob Dylan started in folk music. I totally see Jewel open for them and her kicking out the talkers! hahahah Good for her! Love her music.
She looked inside herself, found herself, and she is an incredible human being. Her interviews are as good as her music. I wish I knew one person who was honest with themselves.
You’ve obviously never met her. I have and I can tell you, she’s not what she appears.
Sure you have
@@user-ft3nm1ue2l yep, played several shows with her. Shes a nightmare!
@@officialWWM explain your comment
I remember when Jewel came out with her first album. I never thought much about her and never heard an interview with her until now. She is really an amazing artist and woman. Definitely someone I would want to get to know on a personal level. She is honest and very relaxed when she speaks. I am impressed with her now.
What Jewel experienced with audiences at Dylan and Young shows is the same thing Prince experienced opening for the Rolling Stones. He was ready to quit the business. But Jagger must have given Prince similar words of encouragement. Both Prince and Jewel went on to have good careers in the music business.
Her book "Never Broken" one of the best books I've ever read. I'm not sure she even knows how great of a writer she is.
I agree. I read her autobiography
She's also a fantastic novel writer
She's pure talent. Amazing woman!
I wish she’d write much, much more.
Beauty, brains, and talent! Talk about the whole package. I've liked Jewel from my first listen, 'back in the day'. She's an incredible person. 👍
I love her! Always have, always will. She’s an incredibly talented artist, so real, so down to earth, and self aware. Amazing performer, song writer, musician, and singer.
Getting advice from Bob Dylan and Neil Young, well, it really doesn't get any better than that!
And the rest is history! One of the most talented singers of all time. She has that 'it' thing!
She's one of the best things to come out of that era.
She quietly and beautifully stood out like a ray of sunshine in a sea of plaids and oversized jeans and toques.
Just great to near this. “You don’t have a choice to be who you are.”
Yes you do, every single time something happens in your life. You can either do what you think is right or what you think others will think is right. So you 100% have a choice.
@@sole__doubtthat’s not what that phrase means. It means, if you deny your creative forces, or your dreams of being a scientist or owning your own business, etc, for example, you will be unhappy deep inside, & it will find ways to come out.
@@dshepherd107 I get all that but you still have a choice.
Good for you Jewel! Be you!
FYI, I just attended a Dylan concert at NJPAC. He also required respect. No cellphones were allowed inside. If you left to use the bathroom, when you returned if he was in mid-song, ushers prevented you from re-entering until that song was finished. I'm glad that these artists require the respectful attention of the audience. It's long overdue. They're playing MUSIC for us. It's not a fucking circus.
It would be really nice if Bob returned the same respect. It would be nice if he actually played the songs he knows you want to hear, not his newest songs, that to be honest are not that good. Most artists get this and mix it up, not Bob. Never again.
@@mtadams2009 Scott, while your opinion has validity, which would you prefer: an Artist who is constantly evolving... or a touring jukebox!
@@Dang... i get your point too, but I have heard Paul McCarthy even say, “ he knows what people are there to hear and it’s not his latest songs” he gets it. He plays some of his new songs but he knows what people are there to see. I have seen hundreds of concerts and Bob Dylan was the worst show I have ever seen in my life. I have actually never seen a bad show before. Hell he played a medley of many of his great songs. Really a F medley. I think because Bob couldn’t care less about his fans because he is so special. Never again.
@mtadams2009 can you imagine having to play the same song the same way for decade after decade? That's probably why so many artists have their passion sucked out of them. Dylan is always evolving his songs, sometimes its a miss, but when it hits it really hits, and its never boring or predictable. Thats probably why hes still releasing critically acclaimed NEW music in his 80s. How many artists can say that? When i saw him a few years back he was incredible.
His most recent album of new material is my favorite and if he was doing the jukebox thing, I wouldn't continue to see him live. The way his shows are is the reason I continue to see them. @@mtadams2009
My Cousin Stacy Loved Jewel SO much
She was taken from us at the young age of 35
I will always continue her love for Jewel.
When I was doing my student teaching, my lead teacher told me that, if you want students to listen to you, don't yell, just lower your voice.
So glad i just saw this. Thats one baaaad woman right there. 💪🏼🎙️
What a beautiful and stunningly strong songwriter. She’s fine! Inspirational stories. Great interview. Thank you!
What a wonderful interview - great stories - BD and NY- saw her recently in Tokyo and she was very cool- great post - cheers!
Very enlightening. Thenks for posting
Bought her first cd because I heard her story. Then listened to it and bought all her new music and it’s still on my music list
I’m a stagehand I was working on setting up her show at the Palace theater in New Haven in 97 or 98 she was so nice and cool and beautiful in a non rock star way. I didn’t know she was the talent till the show started. I was in love with her
Thank you for sharing your story
Everyone loves Jewel. She's just a loveable lady.
Jewel is great. Love her! Thanks for having her on your channel.
What a great, candid and truthful interview. Love it!
I saw you at what used to be the old movie theater in Lancaster California Jason Mraz was your opening act fell in love with Jason and you were spectacular all alone on the stage you told us a story and you’re an incredible singer and musician. I don’t want to go to big stadiums I’ve seen big stadium shows they’re worthless it was fantastic I will never see another concert in anything bigger than a 500 C theater
This girl is one I have always thought was amazingly talented and endlessly beautiful in body and spirit.
What an endearing storyteller she is.
Shes gorgeous!!
I saw her open for Neil Young back then; she was great; love that story about Bob Dylan; thanks for posting
I discovered jewel along time ago and bought her cd, i had it in my truck cd playing and my very young daughter started singing with the songs as i worked on my race car , the next day i could not find the cd and a couple days later she was playing that cd in moms car as they rode home from school , my daughter was very impressed with jewel , my daughter was killed in a single vehicle accident, and these memories keep me sane
The internet needs more interviews like this. Incredible work, thank you both.
I love this! Jewel has stories that I’ve never heard before. Bob Dylan and Neil Young had her open shows…my word! Jewel is a gem. Absolutely love her.
Back when bootlegs were traded I had a ton of early Jewel concerts. She is unbelievable and still to this day, down to Earth.
Gotta love Dylan. Charlie Daniels had nothing but good to say about him too! He was hired to play on two songs on a Dylan album. Charlie played the two songs and was packing up his guitar to leave. And Dylan said "Charlie, where you're going?" Daniels said "I'm just hired for these two songs. Dylan said "Well, you're not going anywhere!" Basically kick-started Charlie Daniels career.
In a coffee house called the Metaphor in Escondido, CA north San Diego County, before she was known, she was singing alone with her guitar no one in the place but her and the owner who was in the kitchen, it was midday and I was looking for my musician friend that hung out there sometimes and I heard this girl singing and ad libbing a song and I was really impressed. Years later I asked the owner and he confirmed that was Jewel.
Great interview and fantastic hearing the behind the scenes in her career.
i find this lady very refreshing and her stories with Bob and Neil are really neat and enjoyable....it`s just a fluke I`m watching this video but I am very happy/glad that i did....it captured my interest and made me smile....thankyou miss....thankyou Jewel....
Awesome, thanks for this interview.
And there are plenty of us who would feel the same terror and nervousness opening for Jewel.
Very cool stories. Rock on, Jewel :)
I’m 69, watched MTV. From its inception.. found out about Jewel back then. Always loved her voice..👍❤️
So cool. You let her talk and it was gold. Very relatable. Although, it is likely she could not have had this view if it never happened for her. But, hopefully it will make people feel like they should keep going with what they think is best for them. BUT, remember, you might be doing what you think is best for you and not realize you could be doing something else that is also best for you and you are just not able to see it now.
Guy, Great show! Where did you find those great eyeglass frames?
I've always thought well of her.Shes a lucky woman to be coached by 2 of the greatest who have survived when many didn't. I didn't think I could love Bob more than I did but that's a wonderful story.
This is a powerful interview, thank you for sharing Jewel
Music today wouldn't be the same without Jewel. Glad folks woke up in the '90s to finally listen to this woman's wonderful voice.
Jewel sat in with my band for a whole set at the Boulderado hotel, Boulder, 1992. We played bar standards, she slayed it, and the audience loved her.
My nephew opened for you at the opening of Borland Center in Palm Beach Gardens Florida. He is out in L.A. now. He’s producing movie music snd special effects and for Disney and others. Yes Sean Bucheck. That day is a highlight in his life. 🤗👏🥰
Can’t not love her 🥰
I saw Joni Mitchell open for Bob. She would also stop and call out disruptive attendees. I say good on Jewel, she deserves that much respect at the minimum. Those people can take it to the lobby and stop interfering with the organic experience of listeners in attendance and her performance. So it's about more than respect for the artist. I'm sure Bobby loved it.
Never really took a lot of notice of Jewel before, but my god , I am now. She is the business ,ain't she? Full credit to You Jewel.
She's the opening act people pay to see dylan and she's gonna kick them out because they're talking during her performance what an entitled little diva
check out some of her tunes, she can do really incredible things with her voice. Her grandmother sang opera.
@@jamesraymondsmith nah, her show is very intimate and quiet. Drunken rednecks need not attend.
@@ahill4642 of course I have heard most of her music. I wouldn't make a comment like that unless I had I would suggest she try to win over the people that aren't listening to her taking them out is cancel culture we don't need
Great stories about how those that have come before recognize talent and are willing to help them realize it...
Great share, thx!
I saw Jewel when she warmed up for Neil and Crazy Horse on the "Greendale" Tour. She did some recordings at Neil's home studio...
She seems so down to earth. Always liked Her.
She was seriously razzed unfairly as the opening act for Neil Young at Jones Beach. Half the audience were bikers and they were not being polite..Neil came out and told them to STFU or he would leave. They shut up lol. This was ;96.
Niiiiiiice, new respect for Neil now.
Good for Young
I just fell in LOVE with this woman! Love her energy and so happy that Dylan was totally in her corner!
That was a great piece ! Thank you
That was a great interview. Wow. ❤
lovely interview
Wow, what an absolutely normal and cool person she must be. I obviously know of her and have heard some of her music that has been played throughout my existence so far. It’s nice to see the human side of humanity.
Decided to make the drive down to Boston to see her show (where she opened for Dylan). She was brilliant, had a great time and decided to leave after her set. Walking out the the door, a guard / bouncer says "hey thats the exit, you cant leave and get back in. Dylan hasnt even played yet". I turned back and say "yeah i know, we didnt come for Dylan." The look on his face was likely far more entertaining than the Dylan set lol
What a lovely interview with a lovely songstress. Nice.
There is so much honesty, humility, and humor evident in her recounting her struggle. Wow!
I saw her open for NY at msg. The Afghans Wigs also on the bill. I remember hearing her and I recall she was popular with songs being played on the radio at the time. It was a good concert and while she may have nervous she sounded good from the nose bleed seats we had.
I saw her at First Ave in MPLS when "Save Your Soul" was getting radio play. The place was packed and she was great!
Great interview! We love you Jewel!
Lauren Hutton ("the first supermodel") briefly had a late night interview show.
Jewel was the guest one night. No idea who she was, but with Hutton's questions, the innovative set (great use of mirrors and darkness), and the stories Jewel told, I have simply wanted her to succeed ever since.
Still have the CD I went out the next day and bought.
could never understand when people buy tickets to a show and then talk through all the artists songs. save money and go to a park and meet up with friends and chat there. Jewel is an extraordinary amazing songwriter and singer.
Saw here a long time ago in Santa Fe small audience Really liked her
I LOVE these stories. Great advice!
Awwwwww Bless You young lady!! You do You! Your poetry is wonderful or filled. Both.
I'm so glad you took the advice from the best and F. the rest!
Talkers at shows suck!!! I didn't pay to hear them! Or the screamers and people singing over top of the folks I came out to support.
I went to a random concert once and some jerk thought it appropriate for Idk wtf reason, to bring his own harmonica and play along!?!
A-holes and opinions. We all have them but we can choose not to be one of them! That guy Really made the wrong choice the night of that show!!!!
You've got that fire in you girl and if ever comes a time you think a lid got slammed down atop that vessel, Don't you believe it!
Believe it or not I've seen that happen
Went to the MSG show. Was great!
I'm also a solo singer piano player songwriter and I would never kick anybody out of my show for talking unless they were heckling
Thank you kicking people out of shows isn't the flex she thinks it is. It's pretty disrespectful and turns off the rest of the crowd.
You have to make them want to listen to you that is your job that is the challenge.
That ridiculous. There always some drunk idiot who wants people to know he's there.what could possibly be so important you have to talk while others are trying to enjoy the music they paid good money to hesr. Most of what people say isn't worth listening.
Jewel, I Saw you in July 2022 in San Diego when you played with train, you were so amazing you absolutely stole the whole show I didn't even stay for Train because they didn't even compare to your amazing performance! You should never second-guess yourself you should be the main act in every show you do.
A lot of us never liked the (over amplified ) version of Neil young ! but preferred his acoustic songs - because that's what he really is .
Tell me you made an exception for - _Cortez The Killer_ -
You need to hear the Grace Potter - Joe Satriani Electric version of Cortez the Killer, then tell me which is a better electric version !@@murrayspiffy2815
Of course I will always be a fan of Neils amazing songwriting first , and foremost !
@@murrayspiffy2815 - I think he was probably referencing the Like a Hurricane era...and I'm with him on that. His early stuff was much better!
Neil Young wasn't a rocker? Are you kidding me? Don't you think it's a bit pretentious to assert your ego onto Neil Young's?
Great interview. Wow
Love Jewel
Good stuff
Wow. Love that she went all in and kept fighting.
Great stories about Bob Dylan and Neil Young, two of the best ever to pick up guitars. Jewel is a great artist in her own right.
First saw Jewel with her Boyfriend in the Rugburns in Cleveland at the Agora. She was standing by the stage on the floor all by herself and I complemented her on her voice and asked why she was not the one on the marquee headlining. She smiled, and said something like “because its not my time yet”. A year later she was all you heard on the radio.
Very inspiring ❤
You are pretty real Ms. Jewel -- I wish you the greatest success and happiness
Imagine being a folk singer, and going from homeless living out of your car in San Diego playing to 20 people in tiny cafes, to a few years later, opening for Bob Dylan and Neil Young at Madison Square Garden, with both of them vocally encouraging and supporting you. Jewel has lived a classic rags to riches American dream.
She's a star
I saw a show ere in SF at the Chapel a few years back. Justin Towes Earl. I am sorry I forgot the opening act. Female acoustic duo. They had just played a festival that day and she said her voices was fading. The audience was disrespectful. Chatting p a storm, so she wet to the apron of the stage and without a mic she sang. The audience went dead silent.
I have a bootleg copy of hers, from when she was in San Diego, back in 1996? She is the best. True, hard working, self made woman.
This is great! Love it!
What’s the book that Dylan have her read?
it was a work of Marcel Proust
A strange and interesting thing happened while I was watching this short presentation. When Jewel mentioned her song ‘Angel Standing By’ which I had never heard, I paused RUclips and I asked Alexa to play it. My cat, who was curled up in my lap with me in a recliner, suddenly got up and went to the edge of the foot rest, sat down there and watched and listened intently. Very intently. When the song ended, the cat layed back down, curled back up in my lap. The cat had never acted like that before although he frequently lays my lap while I’m watching. I don’t know what it means or why, but that’s what happened.
Awesome anecdotes!
Jewel still is as gorgeous as ever. Love listening to her stories!
