  • Sun Jian discovered pole dancing online seven years ago, while working as a construction worker in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou.
    He was instantly hooked. Soon, he quit his job to pursue pole dancing despite his parents’ protest that it was vulgar and unsuitable for a man.
    Sun’s hard work has paid off.
    Now he owns several pole dancing schools in China, and one third of his thousands of students are male.
    Sun and his students travel the world competing in pole dancing competitions, receiving one accolade after another along the way. In 2017, he won the top award in the prestigious Pole Art France competition.
    Sun hopes that his success will help change people’s attitude towards pole dancing, and that one day it will be treated in the same way as any other sports in China.

      yeah, look how big his arms are, and how flexible he is. and not only that, it works every muscle in your body, unlike weight lifting which only focuses on a few muscle groups and makes for a very unbalanced looking human. the fact that this "feminine" sport got him so fit and healthy just goes to show that the gender stereotypes we put on certain things are often completely irrelevant, and based solely on societal norms. i'm so glad he managed to make his dream
      work for him, and not only will it provide for his family far better than construction work, but it probably keeps him much healthier -- working more muscle groups, not inhaling small silicate particles, not being exposed to hazardous chemicals in construction. he's healthier, happier, stronger, and better able to support his family. amazing man!!

    I am not disrespecting the Chinese culture in ANY WAY (and if you think I am that’s your own problem) but why does every Chinese/Asian family think that when their child is doing anything unconventional that they are ruining the family reputation. What reputation, you ain’t that special. If anything this dude just created the reputation.

    • @angie6898
      @angie6898 4 года назад +19

      Dominic Burns hello there! I’m not sure if I can explain very well, but basically it’s because Chinese society has traditionally been a collectivist society. This means that it is virtuous to put the family unit (and society), the ‘greater good’, so to speak, ahead of one’s own happiness/will. There’s the concept of ‘filial piety’, the idea that it is the role of children to look after their parents (and conversely it is the duty of parents to look after their children). The status of the whole family, or its place in society, rises and falls together. There’s also this very ingrained idea of ‘face’, which basically means reputation, which can be of an individual, a family, or larger collective unit. Each individual member of that unit may bring good reputation to the collective group/its other members, or ‘lose face’ for the collective group/its other members. All of this has culminated in, generally, high expectations from parents on their children, especially when there’s only one child in the family. Kids are often pressured from a young age to do well in school, for example, and then are expected to get a respectable job, earn money to support the family (especially where the family is comparatively poor). Parents want their children to be happy, or course, but often not at the expense of these other values, which also very much inform their idea of happiness (ie how can you be happy if you’re not conforming to social norms of what happiness is). Of course this is a generalisation and not all parents would be not accepting of their children’s own path, but this is the general gist of why reputation gets mentioned a lot. Looks like Sun has achieved his dreams regardless of what his parents thought, which is brilliant, but I can imagine it would have been a difficult road for him, having to deal with disapproval of his parents, and potentially disapproval from the whole family/social circle. Sigh. Anyway, hope this helps!

      When men and women participate in the same activity, ice skating, pole dancing, body building, gymnastics, track and field, boxing, etc., the activities and movements may be similar yet the manner in which they manifest in the musculature lends to a decidedly beautiful and uniquely masculine and feminine appearances. Instead of embracing pole dancing as something men can do, even if there are erotic and/or feminine elements to it, it's like y'all trying to justify it as "okay" by masculinize it as a sport. All pole dancing requires hard work and deserves respect whether it's done in a competition or the local strip club. Also, he can look sexy AND be inspirational.

    Bravo! If you were my son, I would be so proud that I would weep - my heart would be too full. I wish you all the success in the world.

    It's like magic-- defying gravity. It's lazy to assume all pole-dancing is erotic.

    I am a Christian. I don't see this any different than gymnastics or ballet. You have to be incredibly fit to do what these men and women do. As one commenter said, the only thing dirty about this is the viewer's mind!

    I love seeing men doing what they're passionate about, everybody should have the right to do that regardless of their gender. If there's something you want to try and it wouldn't bring any harm to anyone then go for it! Have fun!

    Yes, they are persistent and talented! They should be officially one of those who represent China in Pole Dance ★🐦
