From construction worker to China's pole dance king

- Sun Jian discovered pole dancing online seven years ago, while working as a construction worker in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou.
He was instantly hooked. Soon, he quit his job to pursue pole dancing despite his parents’ protest that it was vulgar and unsuitable for a man.
Sun’s hard work has paid off.
Now he owns several pole dancing schools in China, and one third of his thousands of students are male.
Sun and his students travel the world competing in pole dancing competitions, receiving one accolade after another along the way. In 2017, he won the top award in the prestigious Pole Art France competition.
Sun hopes that his success will help change people’s attitude towards pole dancing, and that one day it will be treated in the same way as any other sports in China.

People don't realize how strong you have to be to pole dance. He is very talented.
Well, I realize it!! I doubt I could even hang off the thing (in-elegantly) for 3 seconds! The strength required is incredible!
Find me one person who doesn't think it requires strength.
yeah, look how big his arms are, and how flexible he is. and not only that, it works every muscle in your body, unlike weight lifting which only focuses on a few muscle groups and makes for a very unbalanced looking human. the fact that this "feminine" sport got him so fit and healthy just goes to show that the gender stereotypes we put on certain things are often completely irrelevant, and based solely on societal norms. i'm so glad he managed to make his dream
work for him, and not only will it provide for his family far better than construction work, but it probably keeps him much healthier -- working more muscle groups, not inhaling small silicate particles, not being exposed to hazardous chemicals in construction. he's healthier, happier, stronger, and better able to support his family. amazing man!!
@@genetsandjazz you'd be surprised.
Yep, well i know tho
I cant even climb a 1.7 m tree that has maybe 6 - 7 branch or a bit more then how am i supposed to hold myself on a pole elegantly when my arm is the weaker part of my limbs. I mean i cant even do split and handstand on ground 😅 and im definitely not flexible so- well y'know 😃
Edit : Well other than that im a lazy person who didnt fit well with sports (the only thing im decent at is badminton and i have a good understanding of volleyball (thanks to haikyuu) but only decent at badminton, the other thing is bad 😂)
I don't care what anyone says, this requires skill, stamina, unbelievable strength, and grace! And he is amazing! I hope they get national status in the future.

Jessie James - Pole dancing is not dirty unless u make it that way, it was not always a dirty sport. People do it to pass time, strength, health, a hobbie and more. It does not mean it’s all bad.
His body though! Why can't it be accepted like gymnastics? Same strength and flexibility required. I don't see it any different than a floor routine, just with a pole! Good luck on changing the future!

China has no retirement insurance - which is ironic because it is supposed to be a communist country in which insurances are arguibly one of the best parts - so if the parents didn't invest in real estate or gather enough money for later, their children pay them. They were not only worried about the perception of pole dancers which isn't a recognised sport by the CCP but also that he may not make enough money, end up taking drugs and become social garbage. But remarkably, he made a strong career out of it.

This just looks like gymnastics using a poll. I in no way see the "strip club"
When watching him pole dance I’m not necessarily getting “soft and feminine”. I used to think of pole dancing as only erotic entertainment performed by female strippers but after watching this I think it’s a sport combining lots of strength, technique, and artistry.
And he’s an example of how far one can go when they pursue their dreams.

Pole dancing is way more of a sport than golf.
Totally agree, requiring more strength and skills !
As a women who has done both, I would agree with you. But, there’s such a difference in those two things that it seems wrong to compare the two.
@@ninewectawski1935 I see your point. Do you think someone who does pole dancing would be in better condition to do golf? Like, I could picture someone who does basketball being able to pick up baseball better than someone who does baseball picking up basketball. I disagree with your statement only because I love golf so much. I’d say pole dancing is more athletic in nature, whereas golf could be more skill based. 🙂
venuspenistrap I do think that with coordination and strength from pole dancing could give you the advantage in golf, they both take coordination, strength, skill, patience, slower movements, etc.
My husband plays golf and he has a softball league, when his league is going he doesn’t golf. Because it throws his game off, both of them, your swing is so different, your form is so different, so he feels that he doesn’t play his best with either of the two sports, if he plays them at the same time.

None of this is gymnastics.
Melissa S what would you call it?
@@akikiya6409 ...pole dancing.
It becomes vulgar when it's combined with money, drugs and power. All the strippers I know, are addicted to drugs and that's why they do it, to get paid as men view them as sex objects. The act itself may not be "bad," but when it's combined with the above, it makes it problematic. My one friend only does it to get drug money and that's the only reason. He seems like he enjoys it for the sport part.
Looks like gymnastics to me just not on rings, bars, or horse. It is a pole. Nothing vulgar here at all.
Thank you I wish some people could get their mind out of the gutter and appreciate it for what it is. Gymnasts often have half their butt hanging out in leotards and do the same moves but we're there to focus on the gymnastics instead of that. People used to think ballet was vulgar because of all the legs on show, then they learned to grow up.
As long as it's not combined with power, money, drugs and sex, then yes. My friend just does it for drug money and is viewed as only a sex object. This guy is doing it for better reasons

I am not disrespecting the Chinese culture in ANY WAY (and if you think I am that’s your own problem) but why does every Chinese/Asian family think that when their child is doing anything unconventional that they are ruining the family reputation. What reputation, you ain’t that special. If anything this dude just created the reputation.
Dominic Burns hello there! I’m not sure if I can explain very well, but basically it’s because Chinese society has traditionally been a collectivist society. This means that it is virtuous to put the family unit (and society), the ‘greater good’, so to speak, ahead of one’s own happiness/will. There’s the concept of ‘filial piety’, the idea that it is the role of children to look after their parents (and conversely it is the duty of parents to look after their children). The status of the whole family, or its place in society, rises and falls together. There’s also this very ingrained idea of ‘face’, which basically means reputation, which can be of an individual, a family, or larger collective unit. Each individual member of that unit may bring good reputation to the collective group/its other members, or ‘lose face’ for the collective group/its other members. All of this has culminated in, generally, high expectations from parents on their children, especially when there’s only one child in the family. Kids are often pressured from a young age to do well in school, for example, and then are expected to get a respectable job, earn money to support the family (especially where the family is comparatively poor). Parents want their children to be happy, or course, but often not at the expense of these other values, which also very much inform their idea of happiness (ie how can you be happy if you’re not conforming to social norms of what happiness is). Of course this is a generalisation and not all parents would be not accepting of their children’s own path, but this is the general gist of why reputation gets mentioned a lot. Looks like Sun has achieved his dreams regardless of what his parents thought, which is brilliant, but I can imagine it would have been a difficult road for him, having to deal with disapproval of his parents, and potentially disapproval from the whole family/social circle. Sigh. Anyway, hope this helps!
The government would much consider poker or nascar instead of pole dancing as sport. Even though I’m sure pole dancing requires more muscle activities lol
There's always one dude that goes to the pole dance class 'as a joke' then limps home crying. Oh god yes it requires muscle activities. I can't afford classes anymore but I used to do ballet pole.

There is nothing feminine about all the muscles he requires for this activity.
AceOfHearts , he (the dance school owner being interviewed in this segment) said, “I think it’s fine for men to dance in a soft feminine manner...”
In my original comment I acknowledged and honored all the muscles he needs to dance like this.
Of course females have muscles. My comment did not detract from females at all, it simply supported his healthy physique.
When men and women participate in the same activity, ice skating, pole dancing, body building, gymnastics, track and field, boxing, etc., the activities and movements may be similar yet the manner in which they manifest in the musculature lends to a decidedly beautiful and uniquely masculine and feminine appearances. They are wondrous to behold and easy to admire in their different ways.
Thank you.
This requires athleticism that most ppl do not have. Pole dancing is a SPORT. Most ppl would fall on their faces doing simple moves.
I have done it before, and you end up with pain as well as black and blue marks on your body as an result of using the pole.

I see all these comments about how he's a such gymnast/athlete and that there's nothing feminine or sexual about his dance and I feel like people are slightly missing the message here. Instead of embracing pole dancing as something men can do, even if there are erotic and/or feminine elements to it, it's like y'all trying to justify it as "okay" by masculinize it as a sport. All pole dancing requires hard work and deserves respect whether it's done in a competition or the local strip club. Also, he can look sexy AND be inspirational.

Pole dancing is pure athleticism. The amount of muscle control, body strength and artistic presentation. It's very much like rhythm gymnastics except with apple which add more the challenge. This dude is an athlete and businessman not a degenerate. His parents should be proud of him.
Okay but he actually makes it look really masculine, I don’t see why China would look down on it if he delivers in such a powerful manner
It's not just China. I don't think many American families would like their son to be a pole dancer. It's because it's mostly associated with female strippers.
Pretty sure here in China we may prob think it's weird. But we also already have dudes who think wearing a handbag is normal. Lol
It's just new but I personally don't think it's that girly. Because he needs to be pretty fit and athletic and that's really the opposite of girly.
Have you seen male belly dancers? You'd think something such as belly dancing cannot be anymore feminine, but it's a pretty masculine dance when it is performed by men, even though the moves are pretty much the same as women's.
To many of you: why can it not be BOTH SEXY AND ACROBATIC at the same time? Why is it automatically ACROBATIC when a MAN do it, and SEXY when a WOMAN do it?
I think what he is doing is sexy and acrobatic, and it's nothing wrong with that. I was enjoying it in several ways!!
Ice skating can be both, so why not pole dancing? 🤷♂️

Ok this is random but at places like 0:31 it sounds like he’s saying nigga 😂 like 5 or 6 times in the vid!
Such a art,I wish I could hang and glide like that😂
In many countries and cultures, prostitutes was artists, dancers, singer et musicians. A lot of dances were born and was practiced in brothels, like Tango for exemple. So the fact that Pole dance is a sexual dance becoming more ''artistic'' shouldn't be that chocking.
He should be in cirque du soleil...he is very handsome 👍

His parents should be proud. He is earning an honest living. Pole dancing is an art. Many people associate it with strippers and sleazy sexual provocation because strip clubs popularized them. His parents probably feel this is unacceptable and consider it below Asian standards. They are old school and probably like many of yesteryear, closed minded. They need to watch him perform and see his grace and strength. He is poetry in motion. I hope they realize what an awesome gift he has and is sharing and grow to appreciate it, too.
You're just falling for a fake narrative.

The amount of strength it takes to do such stuff, it does not look unmanly to me. It's amazing and not very sexual. Beautiful, graceful, and kind of deadly. Those men could kill you with a kick, crush your head with a bicep.
There's nothing weak about pole dancing - whether you're male or female, you need high level body control, co-ordination and physical strength. People who can't separate pole dancing from the sex industry have a problem...and to be honest, there are plenty of strippers who pole dance like professional dancers. I hope Sun Jian's dream of this being recognised as a true art form and athletic activity comes true very soon.
This makes me so fucking happy. I have had so much respect for pole dancers for a long time. For this to be in Chiba makes it that much better. And he’s opened a school,?? Fuck yes
Pole dancing is one of the most misunderstood sports. It's aerial gymnastics- if people looked at it that way it could help take the stigma away. The strength & flexibility needed is amazing and when done right it is an art form to watch. Sun Jian- im glad you followed your dreams!
First of all pole dancing is a sport just like anything else (i.e. gymnastics, ice skating, ballet, etc.) Do you know how HARD it is just to hold yourself up on a pole? Do you know how STRONG your upper body has to be just to stay there?? And let's not talk about the tricks done with your body! Kudos to them and now I want to learn to pole dance!!! Thank you!🙌🏾🙌🏾💯💯❤❤
I think Ive always hated it because its always been so sexualized (in my experience). I go to variety shows a lot and although there's comedy, dance, music, juggling, etc... I never liked the pole/stripping portion. Personally as an audience member, I don't want to see that. I just dont like surprise performances like that lol. But the people Ive seen can't compare to you. That was serious skill. Changes my mind
Why are we all bullcraping around here? Pole dancing is supposed to be sexy just like belly dancing and to me this guy is missing the mark. Sensuality is part of the dance, but all this guy is brining to me is gymnastics. If he wanted to be a straight faced gymnast, why'd he add the pole? I want to see him make it bounce going up and twerk it coming down. If he cant do that, than give the championship title to someone who can. 😂
The comments here are a joke. So supportive of a man doing this yet when a woman, (who has less muscle mass) does it you all see it as degrading or vulgar or a none achievement.
You only appreciate and find respect for what you are now calling a sport/art when you see a man do it.
Just like most things in life, automatic respect and worship when a man does something, but duty, not a big deal or degrading when a woman does something. Inbred misogyny.
Of course pole dancing is sexy! These are fit, healthy, strong individuals creating fantastic visual shows with nothing but their bodies. This is one of the best kinds of sexy and there’s nothing wrong with healthy dose of that!)
Total respect to pole dancers. Wherever they are doing it in the clubs, at home or on international competitions.
Not everyone could do gymnastic pole like them! 😳 It requires strengh, Grace and discipline.
Why..... why was this recommended to me?
I mean kinda cool. But still, I have questions RUclips.
Damn he is cute and very talented. Pole dancing is not easy. I don't know how to do that but I do admire pole dancers. His family should be very proud, his son is fearless and, sometimes, that is a good thing like in this case.
The origins of Pole dancing are indeed seedy but so was dancing. At first dancers were usually prostitutes then it elvoved from there and became an art form that it is today. Same is happening for Pole dancing I guess.
It’s so awesome that he’s doing something he loves and has fun with. Still it irks me that people in the comments are making such a distinction between what he does and what strippers do. Like the addition of sexuality and money somehow cheapens the act, dismisses how much skill and dedication is required of it. It’s not a shameful act whether anyone does it for fun, pleasure, and money.

Bravo! If you were my son, I would be so proud that I would weep - my heart would be too full. I wish you all the success in the world.

I love seeing men doing what they're passionate about, everybody should have the right to do that regardless of their gender. If there's something you want to try and it wouldn't bring any harm to anyone then go for it! Have fun!
