This is a very popular Broadway musical adapted to film. Oz is not a villain, no actually he’s the wicked witches’ father and there’s a touching reunion between them. Because in this one the witch isn’t evil. It’s actually a really good musical of its own merit. I don’t expect this movie to be good at all with these terrible casting choices, I’m just trying to provide context.

Can't we just leave what's already perfect alone? I saw the musical in London when I was about 12, and it blew me away because people had gotten together and poured everything into making it the best show they could, no cgi, no green screens, no inorganically inserted politics, nothing, just raw talent real sets, real music and real voices, and it actually did tell a story of discrimination, told in a way that made sense to the world in which it is told. This will be tacky, overloaded with headachey special effects, and the singing will be cringe and auto-tuned. I'm also guessing that they're going to do away with Elphaba's romantic subplot, for the usual litany of reasons that they give for those sorts of decisions, or they'll keep it, but make Fiyero a boneless, gutless wimp who fawns over her and does whatever she says.

I used to be mystified why a sub par story with extraneous and disturbing sex scenes was lionized by the mainstream media. Then they did a Jafar musical, one of the songs in the broadway has the "Im a woman and they cant keep me down" prelude to Frozen and Aladdin, then they made Maleficent, then Cruella. It's the patient zero of modern culture. Ironicly the book turns it so everyone else is to blame but the witch. And in the musical, the reason she is green is because her parents get freaky while drinking questionable green alcohol and her younger sister is wheelchair bound. She curses the Tinman and he became made of metal so he cannot be hurt, but in the book she cursed his axe so he cut off his own body parts. It was only due to a tinsmith replacing his body that he was not left a limbless mass. The original books are rather dark. Like when Tinman cuts the heads off the wolves attacking Dorothy.

I hated the original Wicked. Outside of the music, the story was utter ass. Trying to make the Wicked Witch of the West sympathetic and misunderstood was beyond stupid to me (that, along with making the Scarecrow a cursed prince that also happened to be the Witch's former lover). Nothing about the original character warranted it, nor did she come off nor was it written as some misunderstood character. She was straight up evil, and that's made her character enjoyable. Disney tried to do the same with Maleficent in their live-action movies, which were also just as stupid for the same reasons. Not every bad guy is suited for the symathetic and misunderstood angle. Some bad guys are just more enjoyable and work better just being straight up bad and nothing else. Whether that's the original Wicked Witch, the original animated Maleficent, Palpatine from Star Wars, Voldemort from Harry Potter, or even Jack Horner from Puss & Boots.

Never saw the play, but I read the book about a decade ago. A lot of weird sex stuff. I used to be mystified why a sub par story with extraneous and disturbing sex scenes was lionized by the mainstream media. But then the last 4 years happened and I realized that sub par stories about women involving deviant sex is exactly what mainstream media loves.

@@gigiizzy5651 I never read Maguire’s book (though I did read Baum’s). Even though the play is nothing like Baum’s book or the Judy Garland movie, it’s still a decent play.

You know, I think Wicked was the one that started this "Villains are the heros" Trend. First it came out as a book, then someone in broadway used it to push modern politics in the form of music. Then they did a Jafar musical, one of the songs in the broadway has the "Im a woman and they cant keep me down" prelude to Frozen and Aladdin, then they made Maleficent, then Cruella. It's the patient zero of modern culture. Ironicly the book turns it so everyone else is to blame but the witch. And in the musical, the reason she is green is because her parents get freaky while drinking questionable green alcohol and her younger sister is wheelchair bound. Perhaps nobody cared because pandering had not done well before it. (This is coming from a person whose mom and sister loved it so much anytime the car was driving, Wicked was playing.)
Wicked is a decent Broadway musical though it’s not a good way of understanding the actual Oz characters

She curses the Tinman and he became made of metal so he cannot be hurt, but in the book she cursed his axe so he cut off his own body parts. It was only due to a tinsmith replacing his body that he was not left a limbless mass. The original books are rather dark. Like when Tinman cuts the heads off the wolves attacking Dorothy.
@@TheWaterdog6 I have read the (L. Frank Baum) books and it was the Wicked Witch of the East who cursed Nick Chopper’s axe not the Wicked Witch of the West. (Incidentally, Baum said his goal in writing Oz was to give children the wonder of fairy tales but without the nightmares.)

I hated the original Wicked. Outside of the music, the story was utter ass. Trying to make the Wicked Witch of the West sympathetic and misunderstood was beyond stupid to me (that, along with making the Scarecrow a cursed prince that also happened to be the Witch's former lover). Nothing about the original character warranted it, nor did she come off nor was it written as some misunderstood character. She was straight up evil, and that's made her character enjoyable. Disney tried to do the same with Maleficent in their live-action movies, which were also just as stupid for the same reasons. Not every bad guy is suited for the symathetic and misunderstood angle. Some bad guys are just more enjoyable and work better just being straight up bad and nothing else. Whether that's the original Wicked Witch, the original animated Maleficent, Palpatine from Star Wars, Voldemort from Harry Potter, or even Jack Horner from Puss & Boots.
Finally a film where at least a few minorities are represented after all this time...
