Just watched the movie... Ariana carries ALL her scenes, like people laughed their asses off everytime she appeared on scene. She deserves all the awards and praises!
I have a feeling the marketing is similar to how they marketed the Dune movies with Timothee Chalamet, because the first was marketed as just “Dune” but the second “Dune Part 2”
That is exactly what they’re doing. Because putting a ‘part one’ in will detract some people who don’t know it’s a musical in two parts from seeing the first movie.
I would be so happy if they do that! it being in parts would be amazing and also make sense since it is a movie based on the wicked musical that has acts like all musicals do.
I believe surveys and focus groups have shown that saying it's "part one" hurts the film, as there are people who won't go to the theater for it. They wait for it to come out on disc / streaming, and then will see part two in theater.
If I may…it doesn’t merely “look” so good. It PLAYS. It FEELS. It (as Ryan sez) GIVES. Like the BARBIE teaser and trailer, there’s much that’s deeper than just looks in this project and that’s why I’m so appreciative of Universal and Jon Chu.
I feel like Ariana Grande being in a movie musical is not as concerning to me as other pop stars being in movie musicals. I feel that because 1) she has a history with musical theatre and a long standing love of it, 2) she was an actor before she was a pop star. Taylor Swift in Cats immediately made me not confident in the movie because as far as I know she doesn’t have a background in musicals and theatre. But Ariana does. Not to say Taylor Swift is what made cats horrible by any means cause there were a lot of things wrong with that. But this in clearly just made and acted by people who understand and have an appreciation of theatre.
Ariana Grande is also a Wicked Fan since she was a child. And it was her dream role. In a childhood video you can see a wicked poster in her childhood house bedroom.
To me this could be the first Movie Musical to either Hit 1B or Come pretty close. This will be the Highest Grossing Movie Musical of all time. It will be Nominated for 10-13 Oscars. I'm calling it now.
I’m sure it will make a ton of money, but aside from production design, hair and makeup and a few other technical awards it’s not going to be nominated in any of the big Oscar categories.

The opening reference absolutely works! Long before 2012 I knew a movie was inevitable, and I'm so excited it's finally almost here! Great insights on Elphaba's realization about the Wizard and the effigy burning. I'm happy they're using the movie-style bubble, too - I never thought the mechanical bubble of the stage show was meant to be literal (though I could be wrong). And Cynthia and Ariana's harmony on "With you and I defying gravity" keeps giving me the shivers!
I think the reason that the trailer isn't specifying between the two parts in the title card is because they're treating it like both parts are all one project in the same way that a Broadway show doesn't advertise specific acts of the same show. It's giving, "The time between the first part and the second part is just an intermission. This is one production."
Re: "Trailer Popular" vs "Real Popular" - I think the vocals sound excellent, and very reminiscent of Kristen; it's just murked up by trailer-score backgrounds vs the actual orchestration that we'll get to hear (and which may not have even been completed yet). It gives off a similar vibe to movies like the Star Wars sequels which, instead of using old scores from the OT like the prequels did, gave us this weird "trailer-style" rendition of themes that would never be heard in the movie. I think they're being generous in teasing with the vocal tracks, but even those could have been recorded specifically for trailer purposes. I don't think we'll truly know what anyone sounds like until November, BUT I think we have evidence that Ariana and Cynthia will sound fantastic, and the rest of the cast seems fine as well (Jeff Goldblum as the sleezy cornfed hick wizard? Yeah, checks out.)
Showing Elphaba as a child makes a lot of sense because as you guys mentioned, Jon Chu is unifyng every realm of the story, and mini Elphaba is in the book. I was actually really hoping they would include some of her childhood from the book because it is very interesting.

100% convinced that was Kristen Chenoweth at the beginning - happy to be proven wrong but just sounds so much like her. Also if they haven't asked Idina Menzel to be Elphaba's mother in the flashbacks then they've missed a trick. Also the news from Stephen Schwartz that there are four new songs in the film - 3 brand new and one that was cut from the show.

Hearing you talk about the political nature of the story in Wicked makes me remember the time in a comment section about a Broadway Show (maybe Hamilton?) Talked about how they wished Broadway would get back to being non-political and used Wicked as an example of a non-political show and I was like What???? I've read most of the book and quite a few of the chapters deal with Elphaba's childhood so I'm glad they added it. I have seen the musical live (for a birthday present) and I've seen it on RUclips so much that I've memorized it. The trailer made me so happy. I was impressed.
I've already watched the movie and is INSAAAAAAAAAAAAANE. I was busting out crying in the theatre and I stayed in my seat after the movie, trying to process everything I saw. Siento que todos los theatre kids no pararemos de hablar de esta película, los siguientes meses.
The movie is supposed to include more from the book, so hoping the shots of young Elphaba will be scenes from the book. Also, I have heard the first movie will be called Wicked and the second movie will be called Wicked: For Good
13:01 in the heights it’s probably top I’ve favorite musical and I didn’t love the adaptation. Benny and Nina are the most interesting couple of the show and they got rid of them and left us Navi and Vanessa a couple that has nothing special. 96000 in my opinion would have started more creatively in the beginning of the song. Inside a thrift store and seeing them picture win the money as they are trying clothes. Thousands of stories was a very crucial moment in the musical and I felt it negatively impacted the film. There are some spectacular numbers. But overall the script didn’t focus on the right moments. And that’s what I worry might happen with wicked.
I think my criticism of In The Heights film adaptation was partly because of what you talked about here with Wicked on wanting Soundtrack vs movie version of the songs (where in the heights they signifcantly remixed and cut many songs). And then also a couple of other elements. That said the elaborate fantasy sequences shown were intricate and speak to high potential here
I've never clicked on a video so fast. I really need to somehow see the play, but I have never been more excited for a movie premiere. I was hesitant about Arianna playing Galinda, but seeing the trailer and the "passion project" video my opinion is changing.
From what i understand - Ariana closely studied Kristen as Glinda to make it as authentic as possible in her portrayal of the character! Its amazing how much she actually sounds like her
Seeing the movie adaptation was coming out, I wasn’t hopeful, but the trailer alone gave me chills, so I know the movie will give me full body goosebumps
4:17 I completely agree, Ryan! They did that with the 2024 Mean Girls (even going as far as to remove any songs that sounded too “musical theatre”, such as Damien’s solo) and it almost completely ruined the entire movie for me.

He's the perfect Wizard!" Jeff Goldblum has made a career out of playing charlatans and eccentrics on the big screen. And now he's been cast as the Ultimate Eccentric Charlatan! Full Disclosure: I haven't seen Wicked on stage. I may have to before I go see this movie. I am familiar with the songs, though. I mean, who doesn't know "Defying Gravity"? I am, also, of course, familiar with "The Wizard of Oz." (again, who isn't?) I have a feeling this movie is going to be nominated for many awards. They may wait until Part 2 releases before nominating it. Whichever year they get nominated, I predict they're going to win all the awards they're nominated for.
I love both his and Michelle Yeoh's "understated" presence in these scenes. They are definitely choosing not to play these as over the top, cartoonlike villains and it works really wonderfully.

Part of me wonders if theyre tapping into doing "son of a witch" content from how theyre advertising part one. Maybe including Liir and his crush on Dorothy in part two? They didnt have him in the musical originally but with a two part film they could include him and the nunnery stuff etc from the books.
I'm curious. If this part 1 ends with Defying Gravity, how will they translate the feeling of seeing Elphaba rise from the stage in a live show to end Act 1. That is definitely thrilling to see live for the first time but on the screen there are other more cinematic options. It will probably heavily rely on the performances regardless of how they end the song (and part 1) on screen. ??

Something I loved about John Chu in the heights is he kept the ensemble dance of broadway!!! that's so often cut but dance is a whole third of it!
Hearing you talk about the political nature of the story in Wicked makes me remember the time in a comment section about a Broadway Show (maybe Hamilton?) Talked about how they wished Broadway would get back to being non-political and used Wicked as an example of a non-political show and I was like What???? I am so in love with this trailer - I think I’m going to cry throughout this whole movie.
IMDB has had a page for the Wicked movie since 2008, and I know it was rumored before then because we talked about it in my high school friend group.

I've read most of the book and quite a few of the chapters deal with Elphaba's childhood so I'm glad they added it. I have seen the musical live (for a birthday present) and I've seen it on RUclips so much that I've memorized it. The trailer made me so happy. I was impressed.
I've already watched the movie and is INSAAAAAAAAAAAAANE. I was busting out crying in the theatre and I stayed in my seat after the movie, trying to process everything I saw. Siento que todos los theatre kids no pararemos de hablar de esta película, los siguientes meses.
The movie is supposed to include more from the book, so hoping the shots of young Elphaba will be scenes from the book. Also, I have heard the first movie will be called Wicked and the second movie will be called Wicked: For Good

13:01 in the heights it’s probably top I’ve favorite musical and I didn’t love the adaptation. Benny and Nina are the most interesting couple of the show and they got rid of them and left us Navi and Vanessa a couple that has nothing special.
96000 in my opinion would have started more creatively in the beginning of the song. Inside a thrift store and seeing them picture win the money as they are trying clothes.
Thousands of stories was a very crucial moment in the musical and I felt it negatively impacted the film.
There are some spectacular numbers.
But overall the script didn’t focus on the right moments. And that’s what I worry might happen with wicked.

I think my criticism of In The Heights film adaptation was partly because of what you talked about here with Wicked on wanting Soundtrack vs movie version of the songs (where in the heights they signifcantly remixed and cut many songs). And then also a couple of other elements. That said the elaborate fantasy sequences shown were intricate and speak to high potential here
I've never clicked on a video so fast. I really need to somehow see the play, but I have never been more excited for a movie premiere. I was hesitant about Arianna playing Galinda, but seeing the trailer and the "passion project" video my opinion is changing.

Seeing the movie adaptation was coming out, I wasn’t hopeful, but the trailer alone gave me chills, so I know the movie will give me full body goosebumps
I saw this last night, the “wicked witch of the west” aka Alphaba was by far my favorite character
4:17 I completely agree, Ryan! They did that with the 2024 Mean Girls (even going as far as to remove any songs that sounded too “musical theatre”, such as Damien’s solo) and it almost completely ruined the entire movie for me.

I didn't know anything about this movie going into the trailer; didn't even know it was happening. When I saw Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard, my jaw dropped. I was like, "Well of course! He's the perfect Wizard!" Jeff Goldblum has made a career out of playing charlatans and eccentrics on the big screen. And now he's been cast as the Ultimate Eccentric Charlatan!
Full Disclosure: I haven't seen Wicked on stage. I may have to before I go see this movie. I am familiar with the songs, though. I mean, who doesn't know "Defying Gravity"? I am, also, of course, familiar with "The Wizard of Oz." (again, who isn't?)
I have a feeling this movie is going to be nominated for many awards. They may wait until Part 2 releases before nominating it. Whichever year they get nominated, I predict they're going to win all the awards they're nominated for.
I love both his and Michelle Yeoh's "understated" presence in these scenes. They are definitely choosing not to play these as over the top, cartoonlike villains and it works really wonderfully.

My hunch is they're following the naming conventions of the recent DUNE movies. The first one was simply DUNE, the second was DUNE: PART TWO.
Part of me wonders if theyre tapping into doing "son of a witch" content from how theyre advertising part one. Maybe including Liir and his crush on Dorothy in part two? They didnt have him in the musical originally but with a two part film they could include him and the nunnery stuff etc from the books.

I'm curious. If this part 1 ends with Defying Gravity, how will they translate the feeling of seeing Elphaba rise from the stage in a live show to end Act 1. That is definitely thrilling to see live for the first time but on the screen there are other more cinematic options. It will probably heavily rely on the performances regardless of how they end the song (and part 1) on screen. ??

I think it will start with Dorothy from the teaser, we'll see elphaba melt, and then have it go right into "She's Dead" from No one Mourns The Wicked.
