    theatre kid drama from my most recent show: so basically we were doing beauty and the beast has to do makeup to make him look… well, beastly. so basically this girl tried to do the beast makeup and it was straight up blackface. like no joke, just incredibly dark makeup. the girl doing the makeup was white, and so was the guy playing the beast. my friend, a black person, was upset about the makeup and talked to the girl who did it. the girl apologized and said that she would change it. the next time she did the beast’s makeup, she did it exactly the same. my friend confronted her in front of other people, and the people around them started talking about how sensitive and over dramatic my friend was being. one girl in particular said that the only people who could have a opinion about the makeup was the guy playing the beast, so it was okay for the makeup to stay the same. my friend ended up talking to the director and the makeup got changed, but what do you think? who is the asshole?

    • @blueblossom3384
      @blueblossom3384 3 месяца назад +33

      I think it’s inappropriate to have a straight blackface. Like if the person was resembling a black person being white. However I think it’s important to keep in mind theater makeup is a little different. If there is only dark makeup that’s wrong, but if there were things visible that showed things like fur or beast like features than that’s different than blackface.
      In summary: it depends on what the makeup looked like

    I have a sorta recent AITA theater story:
    Ok so, we were doing Ride The Cyclone The Musical at my jr high (I was casted Jane Doe), and in this musical one of the Main characters , Ricky Potts, has a degenerative disease (causing him to be mute and have to use mobility aid arm crutches in the beginning of the musical, also I provided the mobility aids sense my father owns a medical company). My little cousin also has a disability similar to his, (hard time speaking + uses a walker) and she was going to come opening night, along with her family. In one of the songs, What The World Needs, there is a line that Ocean (another main character) says “How long does he got if we feed him through a tube?” (referring to Ricky), which seems sorta Ableist in my opinion + it wasn’t a major line in the song, so i asked politely if we could cut that small part out sense i didn’t want my cousin having to hear that. The teacher got extremely pissed at me for even asking, and threatened TO TAKE AWAY MY ROLE AS A PUNISHMENT . I am quite upset at this due to the fact the teacher cut out another character, Noel’s, major Song and character trait due to the fact she is homophobic (his whole character is being the only openly gay Highschool boy in a small town), she went out of her way to rewrite his character and a whole new song for him. I don’t understand why she couldn’t let us skip a small line in one nights performance, but she happily changed a whole character.
    AITA?

      @Ugly-Pidgeon 3 месяца назад

      not only is the teacher the a-hole, but it is illegal to change that much of a show. If you paid for the rights to put on a production, you cannot change what is written in the script no matter how much you want to.

    • @marystombaugh2282
      @marystombaugh2282 3 месяца назад +1

      legally, all changes must be pre-approved by the licensing company. you have to submit a thorough list of any changes you want to make before you can even sign the contract. If the company finds that you have broken your licensing agreement, they can shut down your production and refuse to ever license to you again. But I totally understand your reasoning for wanting to change it, and threatening to take your part is crazy. There shouldn't be punishment for trying to have an open conversation, and even if there was, "taking" a part shouldn't be the answer. Parts aren't rewards - they should go to the best fit for that role/production.

  • @luna-mo3ol
    @luna-mo3ol 3 месяца назад +57

    OMG so glad you guys reacted to mine! For context, no theatre wasn't mandatory in our school. A lot of the kids in class seemed to have a large interest in theatre in general, and a lot of them were actually very talented too. I think what it was though is they just thought of it as a fun thing that they didn't feel like they needed to take seriously despite enjoying theatre. Perhaps they saw it more as a fun hobby whereas I see it as my dream career so maybe that's why I was taking it way more seriously. I also just didn't want anyone embarrassing themselves or me onstage because that is genuinely my biggest fear lol. So that had a part to play too. It is also true though that the plays we did were really only for the class to do, it wasn't open auditions like how some schools do. It was actually a requirement of everyone in the class to audition and participate in the show on some level for a grade, but that also included tech roles, so no one was forced to be onstage. Also😆 10:41 I have conversations with myself all the time so yes I genuinely couldn't remember if those were things I actually said to others 😂 I do remember now that I was saying that to a *friend* but not because she was a part of that, I was just ranting to her about it. It was stuff I WANTED to say to these people but didn't 😂 it is true that I thought of myself as being better just because I was taking it more seriously, which true it's an egotistical thing, I realize that. But like... was I wrong... I don't know, more opinions welcome lol
    Long side note: I went to see the spring musical this same school did a couple months ago. I'm in college now, some of the students in my theatre class were a grade or two younger so they were or are still there. A few of them were in this musical along with a few new faces. And let me just say - that performance was the worst I've ever seen and gave me terrible second-hand embarrassment watching it. A friend of mine who was also in my theatre class (same year as me and was the only other person who took it almost as seriously as I did so I left him out of the story, because regardless neither of us were saving these shows) was actually recruited to be a part of this production despite no longer being a student..... not sure why or how that came to be, but afterwards he did tell me that was the worst thing he's ever done lol. For comparison, I saw the other high school that's in town's production of a musical, and theirs was incredible. Granted that one was a bigger school that was actually in the middle of town unlike in the suburbs like mine was. So they had a bigger budget and much more diverse group of people. But it was fabulous and made me wish I had transferred there when I had the chance.

      @5nydee 3 месяца назад +3

      dude, imma be so fr, this does not help your case. your comparison GREW when you graduated, and standing in judgement of high schoolers is sad. i'm sorry your experience was rough (as someone who also wants this as a career), but your perception is not everyone's, and at the end of the day, theatre kids can be the biggest over-exaggerators or sh!t talkers of shows they're in. no one can get a proper read of your actual talent OR others' solely from your side of the story, so it's best to just kinda leave it at that.

    • @luna-mo3ol
      @luna-mo3ol 3 месяца назад +3

      @@5nydee I mean, it is true that the shows were bad and there's no denying that, high schoolers or not. And like I said, a friend of mine who was a part of this recent one had said the same thing. I also never said my perception was the same as everyone else so I'm not sure what you're getting at. Of course no one can get a proper read of anything anyone says online, but we were asked to give these stories for content and that's what I did 🤷‍♀️ I appreciate the feedback ofc! I'm just a little confused

      the whole story was very dramatic and i personally just like to worry about myself. if they want to look stupid that’s their problem. but the way you described your high school and the shows is LITERALLY my high school… like the teacher was so last minute and the show had to be pushed back months because nobody would get it together 😭 (well except for the lead (me)). the shows always came together at the end, but you could have absolutely been describing my hs experience 💀

    AITA for refusing to act in a scene with someone who mocked my boundaries?
    I (18, F) was in a regional show as an extra with two actors I already knew (1M 1F both around 30), and they were supposed to kidnap me. Our director prefered our male extra to me for most scenes but the male extra wasn't there that day and I wanted another scene so I volunteered to play the part to figure out the scene in hopes he would give the scene to me (which he did and there was no drama).
    The two were supposed to carry me, by having the actor pick up my upper body and the actress carry my legs. I struggled with an eating disorder at the time and didn't love the idea of being picked up and carried all summer because it made me self-conscious about my weight, but I didn't want to risk being taken out of the scene. It also hurt the skin on my arms and we did it like a million times in one rehearsal, to the point where the male actor asked if the lift hurt me. I told him it did a bit, and he seemed worried and said he would figure out a better way to hold me. During the next take, the director interrupted to reconfigure the scene and they didn't let me down. I asked to be let down multiple times but both of them laughed and wouldn't let go to the point where I had to wiggle and kick until they dropped me. The actress made a joke about it and the actor mentioned that I said it hurt which she immediately ridiculed as well. The male actor ended up changing the way he carries me which helped and the lift got cut in tech week all together.
    Now, a while later, I'm in a different show with the same actress and somehow once again ended up in a scene where she is supposed to restrain me, this time while another actress takes off a piece of my clothing in a somewhat sexual scene. I don't really feel comfortable with her in it since I already struggle with setting physical boundaries and asking others to respect them, but was told by a friend that I am overreacting since it was just a joke. AITA for not trusting the actress and would I be if I said I didn't want her to be the one who restrains me?

      @CrystalCauliflower 3 месяца назад +1

      OMG dude you are so not the asshole here. I get it, boundaries can be really hard to set, and have someone mocking them is horrible. I wouldn't trust that actress either, but I don't know how you could get her to stop since she is so disrespectful of your boundaries.

Since they were also doing props and it was a small school, it makes me think that this teacher was not getting a lot of help elsewhere which would definitely explain them being a bit all over the place.

      I know! At lot of times when you’re front row you have a really limited view and/or it’s like watching a tennis match trying to see what’s happening on the stage. Especially with a show like the Lion King with such a rich background cast you’re better off being seated a number of rows back. The only time I’ve ever enjoyed watching a show from that close was a touring performance of Cats at theatre with a really relatively small stage.

    I have a very recent story. So me and my family went to new york for a trip and while we were there we got to see Friends The Musical. It was their last showing and I was so excited, we got there and sat in our seats but when the show was close to starting I decided to move to the front row of my section since there was literally NO ONE THERE. Eventually these two girls walked in and apparently I was sitting in one of their seat but considering that whole row was free I didn't see a problem with it. During intermission they moved from sitting next to me to sitting behind me before finally sitting in a separate area. My parents said I should have moved because they "Wanted to sit next to each other." and it wasn't like I was sat in between them, I was on the end of the row just at the front with them sitting next to me. AITA?

    • @therealameliabedelia7821
      @therealameliabedelia7821 3 месяца назад

      You’re the a-hole. Totally get wanting to move to a better empty seat but you need to at least wait until intermission so you know the seat hasn’t been purchased by someone else.
      It wasn’t your seat and you likely disrupted the experience of other theater patrons as these two girls had to then figure out where to sit during the performance. Also wondering, if the row was so empty, why didn’t you just move down so they could have their purchased seats?

    I got a current AITA story that still haunts me, I’m going to be in an upcoming production of Les Mis as Marius, however since the auditioning phase, I realised i could have gotten Valjean cuz no one went for him. By the time I realised, the role got cast. Since then I’ve met the guy who’s really nice… but he told me he thought he was gonna get Marius… so now I’m considering asking him if he wants to switch? But I feel like I would be seen as such a dick… but I also don’t wanna pass up Valjean, am I the asshole?

    • @bunji_beans
      @bunji_beans 3 месяца назад

      A lot depends on whether the actor casted as Valjean wants the role or would prefer Marius. If they want to switch, I don't see anything wrong with asking the director (who might just say no anyway)
      I think there's a way to discuss it with the other actor tactfully and without making them feel like you're coming for them or don't think they can do it. You may also have to do some work internally to make sure you're ok with whatever the outcome is so you're not resentful
      If you don't mind me asking, why didn't you go for the role in the first place? You say you don't want to pass up the role, but not going for it to begin with would suggest you already did
      Oh a lot also changes if rehearsals have already begun. The further into the process it is, the less appropriate it would be to suggest a major change like this imo

    • @AcedAppleAgain

      The reason I didn’t go for the role was because this is technically the first ever role I’ve ever auditioned for. I was insecure at the time I did it and didn’t think I could go for it. But since becoming more confident with my singing, I have realised my voice is better suited to Valjean anyway. Or at least I believe so.
      Thanks for your advice! :))

    noooo i missed this one 🙈 i have such a good one. You can AITA this if you want to commenters. im open to any and all critisism & comments
    my theater director decided for our spring show, it would be a touring show to the elementary schools. It sucked that thats what it was for my last show (senior), but it is what it is. im not too torn up about that bit. The tea is what happens at the end. So we were gonna have this last show at a nursing home, weirdly enough. The day of the show however, one of the leads of the play got sick and had to go out of town to their doctor. My Director, instead of being okay with 1 of 3 leads not being there (with it only having 2 originally anyways) and being like, “I hope you get better soon!” responds with, “Im disappointed in you.” ??????
    Now, i am dating this person (5 yrs!) and our Director knows this. Because this made me so angry, i text her with a “You can’t be disappointed in someone for something they cannot control” and she replies with “You are not apart of this” and i did swear because again, i was pissed off, and maybe it wasnt my best moment, but i responded back with, “Fuck yeah it is, this is my partner.”
    She then ended the conversation, i texted saying the line of communication will be open and she said “You yelled and swore at me, this line of communication is closed.” and then when my grandmother is at the school, she cries to her about me and my partner (we’re closeted) saying we were the most hard working in the company, and how she just wishes we would apologize.
    I dont feel like i have anything to apologize for other than my anger. i still believe that it is not fair to be disappointed in someone for something they cant control.

    I have a good, morally debatable, theatre AITA!
    Recently I was in a school production of Starmites. Its something I had been looking forward to for months even prior to auditions, this being my second time working with these (truly lovely) directors. I auditioned with a handful of my friends who were in last year’s production aswell. I got cast in a quartet (The Bites) with two of these friends and one unfamiliar face. We were all overjoyed to be cast not only together, but as named characters too. Yet halfway through the production one of my friends in the quartet started having health issues. She started missing school more often than not and the same thing went for rehearsals. During tech week, she was only there for one rehearsal. The rest of “The Bites” had to scramble to pick up her lines or awkwardly skip over them in her absence. Though the school practically never has understudies, we had to bring in an ensemble member to sing her parts or (only sometimes) say her lines. This understudy had no time to practice or memorize because she was only instated as such less than three weeks prior to the production. Fortunately, my friend who was originally cast made it to all three shows but stumbled through it without having much practice. After the show she didn’t come to school for a week because she was recovering. Normally I wouldn’t harbor any ill will but I think, *halfway through the production*, that this wasn’t good for her or the cast that she should’ve dropped out of the show. I haven’t said anything but I can’t look at her the same without thinking about the situation. Yet I feel guilty because obviously she isn’t in control of her health. But she is in control of how she deals with it and how her decisions impact others. It doesn’t help that she evidently sees this as just one of her many hobbies she’ll do as an off-hand if she’s bored and has the time. I haven’t said anything to her but AITA for resenting my friend.

      I don’t think you’re an asshole, but I don’t think you should say anything. Maybe your friend was excited about this role and wanted to perform, or just wanted to be a part of something with her friends even if her health was declining. I understand you feeling this way as someone who has dealt with unreliable cast members, but you need to consider the reasons why she wouldn’t give up her role. Congrats on your performance!

    Okay ik I'm late but I think I have a good submission:
    So a couple years ago I was in a junior high production of Newsies. I was cast as Miss Medda. Rehearsals had been going really nicely and I was trying to be as helpful as I possibly could. There was a woman working the costume department. I'll call her A. I loved my dress and there was like a blouse-ish thing that was worn underneath the dress. (also sidenote: our costumes were mostly donated or bought, none were homemade.) When I tried it on at first, A had it so the buttons were on the back of the blouse-ish thing because there was intricate detailing on the side with no buttons so it seemed like the buttons go on the back. So when we were running the show, I had the buttons on the back like how it was at first. A decided that it wasn't supposed to go like that so I put it the other way. I suggested to her that I wear it the original way because A's way looked off. She said no. I didn't talk about it for a bit. It was bothering me so I told her again that I was pretty sure it was supposed to go the other way. A got really mad at me in the dressing room and told me that I can wear it like that but if I want to question her, I should just make my own costume. I wore it with the buttons on the back, the way I thought it was supposed to go, for the show. A had a son who was in the play with a minor role. He told me that his mom was really angry and that she said I hated my costume. I genuinely loved my costume. I was just trying to make what I thought was helpful suggestions. Idk tho sorry for this being so longg.

    So I was premiering a musical revival and my friend/ coworker was fed up with my understudy *as was I* she wasn’t treating it like a job. During the premiere while she wasn’t on stage she was bothering the cast, like making comments about unrelated things, and getting in the way of workers. I wasn’t to bothered, but then my friend/coworker had said that she was going to file a complaint with our director. The day after she did, our director didn’t do anything, so then my friend said that she was going to forge emails to get *my* understudy fired, I disagreed and she eventually came around, during our week off after the premiere she stayed with the group and I went to go join a tour of another musical and brought along some other cast members, during this my friend went behind my back with another costar and forged the emails, my understudy almost got fired before I had stood up for her, in the long run my “friend” got fired. Now the majority of the cast I’m not friends with won’t talk to me and are acting as if I’m the a-hole, am I

    AITA For telling my Grandma to stop singing during Moulin Rouge? My Grandma took me to see the Melbourne cast of Moulin Rouge. During the opening number she was singing along and wouldn't get the hint from the people next to us and me. I turned to her and said "People have paid to hear the professionals sing, not you. So shhh". For context, she had seen it twice before and has previously said she was going to sing what she knew, and it was my first time seeing Moulin Rouge, so I also wanted to hear the cast and not her. Later, she told my mum and I got in trouble for telling off my grandma who "was just trying to have fun at a 'concert' she paid for". So AITA?

    Here’s some theatre kid drama that has been going on:
    I’m in a local theatre group and every year we do the rocky horror picture show as a halloween special, most of us are in our early 20s, our last director is around 30. Last year wasn’t just my first time being a part of the theatre group but also my first time doing theatre in general. I wanted to do theatre my whole life and it’s the first time where I actually had the opportunity to do so and I told myself that it doesn’t matter what they want or what I would feel comfortable with, I would do anything to be a part of this. Apparently that last director took advantage of his position as a director. He harassed and assaulted people, including me, made people feel very uncomfortable and put pressure on us to do exactly as he intended . Even the audience got involved in some very uncomfortable gags. I’ll skip the details so this won’t be too long. Since a lot of people told very similar stories about him he’s not allowed to direct the rocky horror show this year, the only thing is, I’m friends with his wife. (They’re in an open marriage) While I talked to my other friends about how I don’t want him to direct this show and about the things he did to me and him being manipulative, towards him I acted like everything’s fine between us. I had very mixed feelings about him but as the time has passed I FINALLY start to get to a point where I’m avoiding him and where Im getting very clear about how I feel about him. I was very supportive about kicking him out of the production. But I never talked to him about it. I never told him that I wasn’t okay with the things he did. I wanted to but I just couldn’t. Now that he’s not allowed to be a part of the show Im still hanging out with his wife and I’m still not saying anything about not being okay with something. He’s also been flirting with me the last few times we met, I politely pushed him back every time and maybe it’s just me being a coward and it’s clear that he’s an asshole for assaulting us but am I also the asshole?

    actually i have a second one from the same show: so basically we always do two casts when we do shows and so i was cast as a role in my cast and another girl was cast as my role in her cast which is normal. the issue is she knew the show dates, bought tickets to a concert on the same night as her own opening night, and asked through the directors if it was okay if i could do her show that night but she would take one of mine. mind you there are only four shows total and i get that she wants to have two shows but SHE KNEW THE SHOWDATES WHEN BUYING THE TICKETS so in my opinion why should i give up my show with my cast because of her choice. so when the director A asked me i was idk i have to check with my parents which apparently was taken as a yes! anyway i then later went to the other director B cause the other director A was not there that day. and director b was not really gathering what i was trying to say that i did not want to give up a show and basically said that if i wanted my original shows then they would tell the other girl to just cancel the tickets. its been weeks and they still have not told me what is happening with the dates and the show is next week! so like who is in the wrong here

    When I was in middle school my school had a drama club, and a couple weeks in the show a girl in my group tried to make up a rumor on how I yelled at the director because I couldn’t get a $200 dollar dress for the small role I had (I didn’t know those even existed when I was younger), and we I asked who she heard it from she said a couple of the kids and hour ago I asked her who and she said she forgot. So this pissed me off so I was a little cold to her for the rest of the day but I still was trying to be kind to her. When we had our closing night I got awarded with drama club MVP for being kind, helpful, never demanded, accepted the costumes, and choreography really and they had no problems with me. The first thought that came to my mind was how that rumor just got shut down for good I was so happy for my accomplishments that year. WITA for being mean to the girl a little??

One afternoon I was helping my friend put up the vines for "Neverland" and the students that were in the THEATER CLASS (not production) kept pulling them off the wall, we asked them to please stop multiple times and they decided not to listen so after maybe 20 minutes of telling them to please stop I finally had enough and yelled at these students to quit (disclaimer they were not children we were all the same age it was 7th grade) So aita for yelling at them?

    Okay I have an AITA story for you.
    Am I the asshole for writing and directing my own show after being known as an only an “actor”
    So I am in high school theatre and I have been doing it since freshman year and it this was during junior year we recently did two big shows that I played leads in. One of which being a the Percy Jackson musical where I played Percy. After these shows I had previously written a script that I wanted to put on during the spring. So I asked my director and the show got approved. I was going to be directing my own script. This was also my first time doing tech of any sort. I had never done backstage work so being a director was a big task for me so along the way I did make some mistakes. My casting wasn’t the best and I was really bad at explaining my ideas. I also didn’t know how things worked sometimes. I was very new but some people knew this and understood why i was struggling a bit. So this girl (let’s call her Joan) she’s always been the most valuable asset to our theatre. So she began to take a lot of my responsibilities and get mad at me for not always doing things right. She would also mumble bad things about my script under her breath. I didn’t let that stop me though. So sometimes I would make comments on set and props but mostly I focused on actors. Turns out Joan was getting so stressed from all the work (that she took) that she was taking it out on my tech team. This led me to be really stressed on opening night. Opening night was our last rehearsal day and we went the through show with a few bumps but then it came time to rehearse curtain call. When it came time for the tech to bow they said they weren’t doing the show and that they quit due to my bad directing. This left me really confused and hurt to know that not only were people talking about me behind my back but also people just disliked me now for no reason. But the show did end up going really well but it costed me a lot of “friends”
    Side Note: My director ( theatre teacher) really loved my show and he really wants to do it again next year so idk why they were so upset at me.
    So AITA?

    AITA for promising the lead role of my show to my friend and then giving it to another person?
    A bit of context: every year in my city there's a festival where each school puts on different performances and then we all challenge each other at who's best, the school who makes more points in the end, wins. I was in charge of organizing our musical and I chose The Corpse Bride. At the end of last year I spoke to a friend of mine about it and told her that I wanted her to be Emily. This September we had auditions for the role (they had to prepare a short monologue and a song): a girl from first year brought JD's monologue and blew us all away, she also had an amazing voice and her face features were more "corpse bride-ish" than my friend's.
    It turns out this girl way actually friends with my friend, so when I casted her as Emily, my friend was super happy for her. She ended up being the Skeleton, and we won the musical theatre category AND the whole festival.
    Still, I'm thinking that I must have hurt my friend's feelings by promising her the lead role and then giving it to someone else.

    • @bunji_beans
      @bunji_beans 3 месяца назад

      I'd say NAH. I think saying you promised your friend the role is a bit strong. You told her you wanted her to play it, but it doesn't sound like you guaranteed her the part or anything like that. I think you'd have been an AH if you gave the role to your friend even though the other girl gave a better audition and fit the part more.
      I wouldn't blame your friend if she was disappointed but seems like it helped that her friend got the part as opposed to a stranger. And the skeleton is itself a tasty role that I'm sure she enjoyed.

    AITA for having a rivalry with one of my fellow theater kids at my school. For context, we both started theater at my small all-boys prep school in 7th grade. The show was Willy Wonka Jr. and we both had relatively small roles. But it really didn’t start until 8th grade when my school did a production of The Music Man Jr. My theater teacher always liked me because she knew that she could depend on me, but that year she was on maternity leave so we had one of her friends come in to direct. This new teacher was nice, but her casting choices were weird. I obviously was going for Harold Hill, as any male in theater would, and by this point I had been taking voice lessons to train for this role. But when the cast list came out, I had been given the roles of Marcellus, Salesman 1, Iowan Person, and Pick-A-Little Lady ( keep in mind we had males playing female roles). So obviously this was kinda a shock because I had thought my audition was amazing. So come tech week I asked her what I could’ve done better in my audition and why I didn’t get the role. She just told me that my audition was amazing and that the reason I got the roles I did, wasn’t because I didn’t have what it took, but because she knew I could play 4-5 different roles at the same time with my vocal range rather then just 1. So AITA for still having a rivalry against him for the directors casting choice?

    My AITA theatre story:
    For context I went to a jr-sr high school (7th-12th grade) and I started theatre in 7th grade, by my freshman year I was one of the best (and only) boys in our theatre program. That year our drama teacher was replaced as well, and early in the school year we did the little mermaid, where I was cast as Prince Eric (I was one of two guys who could sing on pitch), and our teacher could not direct for the life of her, nor did she help any of the main characters . Later that year we performed in districts, and I auditioned for our large group, I thought for sure I would get in, but I soon realized that our SCHOOLS large group was being compliantly ran by a student, where she put a senior who can’t sing or dance (nice guy) in it instead of me. I was upset but I kept on trying to perform at our school, the next show we did was a play, the brothers Grimm spectacualthon (bad show) but after I auditioned for it I realized that the date of the show was conflicting with CHORUS ALL COUNTY, which I was apart of, so I dropped out the show quickly (note that she changed the date of the play right before auditions). Finally was the last musical of the year, 9 to 5, which when it was announced my parents actually confronted her about not doing it ( there’s a whole song about how much a character wants to sexually assault another character “I’d like to take those double Ds hold them all so close to me… will I get those legs uncrossed? Of course I will, yeah cuz I’m the boss” but I digress). Of course as one of the only guys who can sing I wanted that role ( it’s the only good male role) but I had heard from ANOTHER STUDENT that she said she wouldn’t give me (specifically me) that role because it would be inappropriate. I was very mad, so of course I auditioned for the role anyway, I had my parents bring that to her attention, and tried to make the auditions as fair as possible beforehand, so when the audition day came, I did a role or nothing (partially cuz I don’t like 9 to 5 and also saying “I know you don’t want to give me the role, but I’m your best guy”) and I sang, ( and I think I did pretty good) but when she posted the cast list she gave that role to the senior who can’t sing (it’s also important to mention that every other lead role in that show were seniors) she never mentioned seniority before, and I was even more mad. I didn’t do the show and decided to leave the school for a much school with a better theatre program ( also important note I plan to pursue theatre as a career).
    AITA for refusing to participate in a musical and leaving the school for unfair casting.

    Hey, I've got a story!
    but just a warning I have dyslexia, so sorry for any spelling or grammar mistakes.
    AITA for abandoning my friend for our drama test
    This took place last year when I was in the worst place mentally, having thoughts I wouldn't like to ever have again and stuff like that. I was also in the year my school started letting us choose electives. I was so excited to finally be able to do drama again as high school in Australia goes for 6 years, and my school made us take drama in our first year of high school but not the second. I was a bit disappointed when I saw the class list for all my classes. I had no friends in any of them besides one girl who was more of an acquaintance at the time. As we shared 5 of the same classes, we quickly became friends, but on the first day of drama, my teacher took an immediate disliking to me. On the first day, I went and asked her for some accommodations to help with my dyslexia and autism (which I had to do even though my school was supposed to let all my teachers know). When I tried talking to her, she just yelled at me and told me to leave her alone, which made me cry as I had undiagnosed and unmedicated GAD. This teacher would do the same for the rest of the time I was in that class, and I began to hate drama, which I used to love so much. For our end-of-term test, we had to get into groups of 2 or 3 and perform a short play/skit. My friend and I both joined together and decided to do a skit I was working on in my out-of-school drama class. We had to make sets, sounds, and learn the lines in two weeks. Plus, I had all my other end-of-term tests, which again I was supposed to be given extra time and help with, but I was always told to "suck it up." Eventually, I just stopped going to school. This test was making my friend irritated with me. She would scream when I messed up a line or when I stood in the wrong place. She was mad that I hadn't finished the background sounds, which she had made me edit together. Then I broke. I was at my dad's that night, who isn't the best... That's all I will say. I called my mum crying and told her everything. She had just had major surgery, so I was stuck at my dad's, but I wasn't going back to his house after school the next day. I was going to my uncle's to help him decorate for Passover. My mum and I made a plan: I would sign out of school without letting my dad know, and her friend would pick me up and bring me to her. But I had to stay until the first break, 2 hours. That day was also the day my friend and I were meant to perform in costume, so I was lucky enough for my dad not to question why I had a bag of clothes with me when he took me to school. In homeroom, I told my friend everything, and she got upset with me and said I was letting her, my teacher, and my whole class down. We had already performed, though we just weren't in costume. Then I left, and after I left for the day, I never went back. I moved schools, and I still have nightmares about ever going back there. My mental health is so much better since I left, but my friend and I haven't talked much since, and I still think I may have been wrong. So, AITA?

I took drama as one of my subjects and was also a drama leader (help lead/run things in drama/performing arts). We did auditions which consisted of singing, dancing and acting. I was cast as the judge. (Whole other story about that). Another girl from my drama class was cast as Elle. For context she was the head of performing arts (a major student leadership position) and her mum was a teacher who was involved in the auditioning process.
    I had her sing before and her singing was OK. But for every rehearsal she was only barely trying, not saying her lines properly or singing properly. The teachers including her mum didn't say anything during rehearsals. Meanwhile any one else who didn't put in effort was being called out for it during rehearsal. This countinued on for the entire rehearsal period, frustrating a large portion of the cast including myself.
    On the week of the performance she was put on vocal rest meaning she had further excuse not to put in any form of effort (untill she wanted to yell or be rude to someone). Furthermore she was sick over this week (had a cold which later turned out to be covid which she spread to a majority of the cast, thankfully avoiding me as I'm immunocompromised - again has a whole other story) and decided to perform despit having an understudy. On the performances she broke character frequently, her singing was terrible (she refused to listen to advice from the vocal coach that would have helped this) and her acting was mediocre at best. Meanwhile several other girls who also auditioned for Elle nailed their acting and had incredible voices,
    During this week she made several nasty comments to me in class for no reason, and acted extremely entitled. Friends and family that came to watch all said she was not good.
    After the performance she encouraged people not to test for covid and then again made some awful comments after I called her out.
    I also would like to note that in previous smaller productions she didn't learn her lines and had a similar attitude, and had also gotten involved in heaps of drama and did not demonstrate responsibility or role model correct behaviour back stage (not quiet and being really rude to others)
    AITA for thinking she didn't deserve this role and was a terrible student leader?

    I have one: my voice teacher is also in charge of the backstage crew for our spring musical every year. There is one junior (I’m a sophomore) who has been on the crew since his freshman year. He always smells like weed, and everyone knew he was smoking it, but no one could prove it was him because he only did it in his car and not in the auditorium. Well, at the cast party he was sitting at the same table as me, and he started smoking it, and I made eye contact with him. He gave me a “don’t tell anyone” look and I nodded, because he has always creeped me out (we also went to middle school together) and I didn’t really care enough to go inside to get the teacher/chaperones. I mentioned it to my voice teacher as an off hand remark and she said that he’ll never serve on crew again. I feel bad, because we’re already loosing our assistant director who worked on crew, and he did a really good job. I’m also kind of scared, because even though my teacher said she wouldn’t tell, I think I’m the only one who saw him.

    Am I the asshole? One the opening night of my first ever musical (which was heathers) my mum wanted to come watch the show, knowing I would have to perform dead girl walking I told her, and I quote “fuck no” knowing i was to play Veronica, I feel bad for this of course but I never wanted my birth giver to see me imitate that stuff 😳 Does this make me the asshole? Btw I love ur videos!!

    I mean I can think of a story…
    So I got into theatre very heavily in the past few years and I always audition for the school musicals with my friends. I started out with only minor roles and one day got a main cast member in grease, while my friends got ensemble. Thus, I began to spend significantly more time with the other cast members, some of which I became very very close with. Obviously i still interacted with my friends inside and out of the stage setting but particularly gravitated towards the main cast friends I had made during rehearsals, especially seeing as my time with them before the end of the year was limited. However, I could sense my friends getting jealous/annoyed and had to sacrifice time I had with a cast member who had helped me significantly with my anxiety and was soon to leave for college to make sure my other friends felt included - a decision that I honestly regret right now as I missed him for ages after the show ended and still do even now. Moreover, I don’t think staying in my comfort zone with my other friends helped with my increasing social anxiety at the time, something that gradually got better the more time i spent with the main cast members, as a pose to these other friends. When the musical was over I thought I may not be put in that type of awkward choosing friends situation again but I have once again been called back twice for the lead in another musical while my friends have not and I can sense them getting bitter again. But if I get the lead, to be honest, I would rather have no regrets this year and would rather foster my friendships with my costars than my friends that I see every day regardless of theatre productions.
    So am I the asswhole for regretting spending time with my friends as a pose to the main cast, making them feel jealous and hoping to step away from them a little during the upcoming production if I get a lead role?

      No a-holes here, you just need to explain to your friends and if they still are being jealous and annoyed with you then they are in the wrong

    My uncle didn't attend my mother's funeral (his sister) because he would have had to get a hotel for a night. Money was not the issue. That was a much less important reason--his personal inconvenience, than the person in your video who would have had to let down an entire organization.

    am i the asshole? this was my first school play and i got an understudy role and stage manager. i was taught to take things seriously with things i loved, so this was going to be one of them. people would talk and laugh and make so much noise backstage and i would politely tell them to be quiet. as time went on, they’d get more reckless and rowdy. i would try to let them know their cues (people struggled with cues at this time) but got told i wasn’t needed by many actresses in the performance. i decided i wasn’t gonna put up with it. i was more harsh with my words as time went on because i was tired of being treated badly by fellow cast members. i would tell actors and actresses to shut up and do their job and never got told off by the teacher. now looking back, i feel like i could’ve been a bit nicer but it felt right at the time. am i the asshole for putting cast members in their place when they were being rude, even if it wasn’t in the nicest way?

I was in a production when I was nine and this girl was like 10, and all of our show were at like 10pm but this was the last one and it was like 2pm and this girl said,”I’m soooo tired rn..” and the kids didn’t like this girl and I didn’t either and I was like,”why are you so tired.” And I said it really snooty and rude I think and so did everyone else. But then we got on stage and the girl passed out…

    AITA for being upset about not being able to see a show again?
    so for context, i'm autistic and my special interest is the musical & Juliet. it's closing here in australia next month, and i've seen it 7 times (5 outside of where i live in australia). i saw it for the last time on the 22nd of May this year (a day before my 14th birthday) and i've been grieving this whole time because this show means everything to me (i used to have really bad depression and would possibly have killed myself if i hadn't seen &j. the depression is kind of back now lol but i had a good year). i've been rotting in bed for over a week now because i find everything too difficult and i keep having panic attacks about it closing, but my parents have called me ungrateful because i saw it 7 times and that should be enough. sorry this is very short and doesn't really provide much but. yeah
