In March we decided to go on vacation together with my father in law, wife and daughter to Indonesia to visit the beautiful islands of Bali and Lombok soon after he became a widower.
This video features the outbound and very empty flight from Tokyo-Narita to Jakarta connecting to Denpasar onboard Garuda Indonesia MD-11ER PK-GIL.
However, also this flight was taped with the very first generation of video cameras with digital recording on mini DV cassettes. There were neither stabilizing nor focusing features available at that time. I therefore apologize for the poor video quality and hope that you still can capture the feeling of what it was like to fly in the 90s.
History of Garuda Indonesia MD-11ER PK-GIL
Airframe 48755 was manufactured 1997 and delivered to Garuda Indonesia, registered PK-GIL, May 24, 1997. This aircraft operated for Varig, Brazil, from October 29, 1999 until June, 2006, registered PP-VQJ and later for TAM Linhas Aéreas, Brazil, from February 4, 2007 was registered PT-MSH, until she was stored in November, 2008. This aircraft was acquired by MDFC Carson Co and registered N730BC, November 17, 2008 and converted into a freighter to be leased to Federal Express, registered N572FE on June 4, 2009. N572FE is reported to be active.

I've try this route in 2009 to Tokyo Narita, but using Boeing 747-400. I feel bored at that time because on the old Boeing 747-400 PK-GSH, there is no inflight entertainment. Feel so bored in 6-7 hours. But great!! I love MD-11 and DC-10-30. Now, all the Boeing 747 in Indonesia already retired.
I believe there were IFE, but only on business class
I possibly flew on this MD-11ER PK-GIL when he became PP-VQJ and operated for Varig.

Boripat Wannasri me too. Wih 200 planes built, MD-11 wasn't popular as A330 & 777 because 3-engine usage on MD-11 makes more thirsty. But MD-11 are ideal as Cargo transporter.

Question concerning the aircraft: The covering of the flap mounting here looks different to those of other MD-11. Other MD-11 don't have coverings that are elongated behind the trailing edge and end in sort of teeth. Is this a special model?
Yes, because this is special version of MD-11. New modified flaps, improved performance(PIP) . With extra fuel tank can fly up to 13.410 km.

@@BruhBruh-ev7mi yes a very rare version of the MD-11. Called the MD-11ER, only 5 were made. 3 delivered to Garuda Indonesia and 2 delivered to World Airways
Garuda md11 was retired before they retire the DC-10. I believe some of their MD11 is currently used by fedex

But now Garuda has B777-300ER with GE90-155B and A332 and A333 with RR Trent-700 are now only the replacements of the MD-11.

Im a retired cabin crew of Garuda, route JKT-AMS-JKT, honestly the landing announcement herein is not up to standard. Not warm enough n should say more to thank passengers for flying with Garuda. Not even saying, " On behalf of the Captain and the crew members.......We hope to be of service with you on your next flight with Garuda.

Sir, what do you feel about visiting Indonesia in that day? Are you feeling something unwell about security? Because approx. 2 months later (13-15 May 1998), Indonesia fell into unrest, especially in Jakarta. Soeharto resigns, rioting and mass rape happened.
That means what I read in an Indonesian online aviation forum was true back then, Garuda have a long delay problem in 1990s.
Today, based on my personal experience using Garuda (unfortunately have not yet be able to go abroad), their OTP (on time performance) are excellent.
This all happened after the string of accidents from 2000-2007, They rebranded and started to get better.
And it paid off with they become one out of two South East Asian airlines with 5 star rating from Skytrax.
