  • SWISSAIR MD-11 HB-IWQ OSAKA (KIX) - ZURICH
    MARCH 17, 2001
    In order to fly one last time on Malev’s legendary TU-154 aircraft in the last week of operation, I travelled once again from Japan to Europe, this time via Zurich onward to Budapest. This video features lots of cockpit footage onboard late Swissair MD-11 HB-IWQ “Valais/Wallis” from Osaka-Kansai to Zurich on a long 12 and a half hour flight. This flight was my last Swissair flight. At this time it was already obvious that the days of Swissair were numbered and the company was in a fundamentally bad shape, despite its glorious history. The friendly cockpit crew offered to take me into the cockpit to pursue my filming passion, because the Maitre de Cabin strictly prohibited filming in the cabin , so all footage in the cabin had to be done “under cover”.
    History of MD-11 HB-IWQ VALAIS/WALLIS
    Airframe 48541 was manufactured 1997 and delivered to Swissair, registered HB-IWQ, named “Valais/Wallis”, December 22, 1997. After the liquidation of Swissair HB-IWQ was transferred to
    Swiss International Airlines on March 31, 2002. HB-IWQ was sold to Varig, Brazil, registered PP-VTU, September 15, 2004. This aircraft was converted into a freighter and sold to United Parcel Service (UPS), registered N284UP, January, 2006. This aircraft is reported to be active
    Enjoy with me the Sights & Sounds of Classic Aviation.

    I love it, my entire childhood was spent traversing the world from JFK via ZRH and GVA on Swiss MD11's, 743's and the odd A310 as far as crossing the Atlantic went and then onto the MD80's through Europe and later finally the Airbus in the last years of that marvelous airline. As far as my folks were concerned, there were only 3 airlines in the world, Swissair, TWA and when left with no other choice, Alitalia.

    THUMBS UP!! Your video reminds me regarding my two LTU MD-11-TriJets flights back in 1992 from/to DUS - PMI - DUS flights. Then LTU was calling their MD-11 jets "Flüsterjets". It,s so sad to saw LTU went bankrupt. Still today I miss their huge L-1011 Trißtar and MD-11 fleet. The Good Old Times in a German airline-history are forever gone. And "Swissair" today is history too. Now these airline is called "only" SWISS".

    I also made a few airplane and airport videos and I plan to do more in the future.

    I love the noise of the three engines and the smell of the kerosene! 👍✈️ In 1990 I had 2 flights with an MD 11...from Frankfurt to Toronto and back! We called this craft „Northbound Lady...and realy, she was a Lady!
    But, I also like to remember the MD 80...The tri-national SAS are still among the most important MD 80 operators in Europe!
    And so me...Between 1977 and 1992 I flew to Copenhagen and/or Stockholm several times a year with this beautiful plane! I am very sorry, but I have never the honour, to travel with Swissair! Evertheless, for me Swissair is one of the best airlines in the world...like Lufthansa and SAS....Thank you soo much for this report!

    Well Mr Daniel its a coincidence but we've both traveled once on the same aircraft you and me.
    You traveled onboard HB-IWQ on March 17th 2001 and I also Traveled on this same MD-11 perhaps in March/April 2005 on a GRU-CDG flight when he became since Sep 2004 PP-VTU and joined Varig airline with a white Star Alliance livery painting.
    (I also been on its sister ship PP-VTH the "black Star Alliance" MD11 also a former Swissair aircraft).

      The MD 11 was FANTASTIC !!! Unfortunately the 330, 340 and the 777 killed it. McDonald Douglas got taken by Boeing and Boeing put an end to the MD 11. McDonald Douglas couldnt handle Boeing and Airbus. Same for the L1011.

      @visionist7 2 года назад

    • @Ben-xe8ps

      @@visionist7 The original launch configuration was business throughout the second cabin all the way back to the third exit.

    • @visionist7
      @visionist7 2 года назад +1

      @@Ben-xe8ps that definitely makes sense as 36 business seats here is a little on the low side especially when flying the Diplomat Shuttle. When they installed IFT's IFEN-2 system they switched to 49 seats in a 2-3-2 layout.

    • @Ben-xe8ps
      @Ben-xe8ps 2 года назад +2

      @@visionist7 Yes I was aware of the switch to 2 X 3 X 2 which rather spoilt it. Nobody wants to end up in that centre seat. I travelled on this aircraft on the ZRH-SIN route and was at the time very impressed with the 2 X 2 X 2 business seating which was directly comparable to the 1970s/early 80's pre-sleeper seat F class seating. Prior to the introduction of the MD11 i recall seating in C was 2 X 4 X 2 on the 747-300's and 2 X 3 X 2 on the DC10's.

      Wrong !!! The DC 10 variants were safe. Swissair 111 an MD 11 had IFE problems and crashed. Its like some Mitsubishi cars that were great but the competition killed them. But the MD11 and Mitsubishi cars were great. Just because you fail in the market doesnt mean you are not good and vice versa. However the MD11 cargo has had problems. Korean Air, FedEx Chinese carriers etc. There i will agree with you.
