- ILL-FATED SWISSAIR MD-11 HB-IWF SEOUL (SEL) - ZURICH
AUGUST 18, 1997 2ND FLIGHT
Another year, another trip from South Korea to Europe. another longhaul flight onboard Swissair's MD-11 was on the agenda back in August 1997. This video features my second flight onboard the ill-fated Swissair MD-11 HB-IWF "Vaud" from old Seoul-Kimpo Airport to Zurich. Even though this is old footage, I do hope, you get an idea of the inflight feeling onboard Business Class on a longhaul flight onboard Swissair almost 20 years ago, despite the tragic circumstances of this aircraft.
History of MD-11 HB-IWF
Airframe 48448 was manufactured 1991 and delivered to Swissair, registered HB-IWF, August 5, 1991. HB-IWF was named “Schaffhausen”, later “Vaud”. HB-IWF was destroyed on Swissair flight SR 111 on September 2, 1998, crashing into the sea at Peggy’s Cove, Canada, 35 nm from Halifax, killing all 229 passengers and crew members on board.
Enjoy with me the Sights & Sounds of Classic Aviation.
Thank you for watching my channel.

Rest in peace all 229 victims of Swissair 111 and rest in pieces hb-iwf. The plane, but more importantly, the victims shall always be remembered.
I think maybe the people who were lost are more important than the aircraft itself..
@@mwd331 Hey, I was the guy who made that comment years ago and now, I really don't like the comment I made. Back then I was 13 and 14 and incredibly edgy, I would constantly make stupid comments and here is just one of my examples of stupid comments I'd often make back then. I feel foolish not thinking about the victims back then, but nowadays, I know to respect victims of anything, plane crash, terrorist attack, train crash, etc. Of course it's also kind of sad seeing a plane getting destroyed, but It's even sadder when you think about the victims. So, I don't really like the me who made comments like this.
@@harrisonofcolorado8886 Maybe delete the comment or at least, amend it
@@mwd331 They did mention the people tho...?
Or was that after the edit

To think someone else looked out that window and never reached their destination
1 year and 15 days later....
Very incredible video. It's interesting to see a full flight video on an vintage aircraft, and also an ill-fated aircraft. Now I can imagine what the last things the people on board SwissAir flight 111 saw before they died as the plane crashed near Nova Scotia.
great video and R.I.P. SWISSAIR 111 HB-IWF...
Can't believe the same plane crashed 1 month after he aboard it, R.I.P to all passengers on board SR 111
The footage is from 1997
Truly eerie and haunting video, knowing your looking at the exact same scenery as the passengers in their last moments before they died. Truly fascinating at the same time
Awesome video bud she was really a great aircraft so sad she crashed in route to Zurich the cos of the crash was faulty wireing that sparked a fire in the cockpit overhead and that's what made that md11 crash so sad rip Sr 111 never forgotten and lovely video of the md11 may all those 229 passengers rest in peace
Excellent video mate, interesting to see both the inside of the cabin of HB-IWF but also the look of Swissair back in 1997.
Awesome! A rare view of Kimpo when it was the primary gateway to Seoul!
And HB-IWF..ni video of it exist..til this one!
thanks Daniel! I saw that one about 10 mins after the 1st one.
I'm happy you uploaded these gems!
+Starboard76 I had the pleasure of transiting through Kimpo a few months before Incheon opened. The only good thing I can say abou that say, is that it allowed me to see an SQ A340-300 in person.
Well of course the newer Airport would be and is much better...but documenting original airports for the sake of being able to see what 'was' is precious!
I have a video of SQ A340-300s on my channel and tons of them in my personal archive. I'd just love to see more of 'old' Kimpo!
if you don't want to make them public..make them private...I'd love to see them!
Believe me Daniel, I understand 100%!
I do the same type of editing myself. Thanks for the consideration!
Thank you for making and sharing this video. Extremely well captured details like clear sound and visuals.
It's unfortunate that this airframe and its last flight ended tragically. Quite a feeling to think about the last passengers may have experienced similar visuals, sounds as in this video. RIP to the last passengers and crew of "Vaud".
Incredible video and very poignant considering what happened to this aircraft and eventually the airline itself. Thanks for uploading!
Didn't know such video existed until now. Very sad, though, to know what was to come.
I am sad for the lost of the people on board in flight 111 and for the aircraft destruction.
Somebody lost their life, sitting In that seat. Such a small world we live in. R.I.P
Great video quality, hard to simply fathom this was filmed 25 years ago
Thank you 🙏
Astonishing man!
Beautiful and sad at the same time.
These are rare footages from the inside of Swissair 111 ill-fated MD11.
Thank you for sharing your experience with Swissair.
My salutations to all the 229 victims and their family and friends.
What a beautiful girl so sad she still lies in the ocean near peggys cove along with the poor people that went down with her amazing video
Sehr schönes Video, danke!
What a beautiful bird Swissair MD-11!
I am S.Korean and live in S.Korea. Thank you for visiting S.Korea. Please visit S.Korea again anytime.
Thank you for this well-made video.. excellent in all aspects and details. well done, shame for the aircraft.. thank you again!!!
Really?!?! look forward to seeing them!!!!!!!!!!!! thanks!!!!
I offer my deepest, most heartfelt condolences 💐, thoughts, and prayers to the families and friends of those aboard this one particular Swissair MD-11 (HB-IWF “Vaud”) on 09/2/1998! 😢😭🙏🙏🙏
I talk to God our Heavenly Father on September 2nd, praying to Him, for Him to grant Divine Mercy for the 229 passengers and crew who were aboard this same MD-11 HB-IWF “Vaud” on the ill-fated transatlantic flight from New York-JFK to Geneva, Switzerland 🇨🇭, on 09/2/1998
I just noticed on Wikipedia about the Aircraft and it states that the IFE Systems that caused the fire was installed between August 21 and September 9th of 1997
Great video! Thanks for sharing this piece of history! How nasty it was when it was still allowed to smoke on board.
Bad enough my mom smokes in her car this would’ve made me ill 😂
Eerie, but interesting - To think the wireing problem could have happened to you, altho I do not think IFE was installed in 1996?
RIP big bird
Are they carrying a coffin -looks so in the first sequence? Love those PW powered MD-11!
44:10...wie sie beim Announcement kurz Zürich mit Seoul verwechselt.^^
This is exactly the same plane before Flight 111
The brown Swiss livery looked the best.
RIP all the people😢
Even looking a the interior of Business class creeps me out
@Alligator the 2-2-2 business seats you see here were removed only 3 days after this video was filmed and replaced with the 2-3-2 seats with in seat AVOD featured when Vaud crashed.
@Alligator I've been trying to find pictures of the economy seats with the system; only two of Swissair's MD11s featured the system in economy, and Vaud was not among them.
No luck so far. I think Swissair must have undergone a complete purge of the marketing materials back then after the crash, because otherwise images of them wouldn't be too hard to find as Swissair would rightly have touted the state of the art system when installed.
My heart breaks 💔💔❤️🩹 for the 229 passengers and crew- and their families!- aboard this same Swissair MD-11 HB-IWF on 09/2/1998
My deepest, most profound condolences 💐 for the families and friends of those aboard this same aircraft- Swissair MD-11 HB-IWF “Vaud”- on 09/2/1998, just a few days short of one year before what came to HB-IWF Vaud.
The families of those 229 passengers and crew on board this same MD-11 a year after this video footage was shot/taken, are all in my thoughts and prayers. May God Our Father and Lord Jesus Christ, Savior of the world, console the all the families who mourn their 229 loved ones who were aboard HB-IWF on 09/2/1998.
When did you find out that you flew on the ill-fated plane? Less than a year before is quite incredible.
***** I'm sure it definitely made you think. Thanks for the reply.
Nothing to do with commercial aviation, but can someone please tell me what is the title of this piece of classical music playing in the cabin at 0:39-1:06 ?
Amazing video! What airline was that at 35:15?
Looks like it could be a Premiair/Airtours DC-10 without titles, but who knows?! :)
Just ask.
Have you flying aboard its successor, the Swiss International Air Lines? And how well it's service in your opinion compared to the old "Flying Bank?"
Yes, similar but dont go on her thinking it'll be swissair because it won't. Even Zurich airport isn't the same
Sade all passengers died bless there souls in sky's above 😭😭😭😭😭🤞❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️
Swiss air 111 !!!!
Was the ill-fated IFEN System installed after this date? I didn´t see them anywhere here...
The plane was rotated out of service to install the new system just three days after this was filmed.
The installation of the IFE system was started on 21 August 1997, just 3 days after this flight.
smoking was still allowed, i miss those days.
25:21 the lil' tot with the toy jet ^_^ How many lil' tots like him died on this very jet a year after this...
Smoking in 1997
47:10-47:55-A DC-10 Varig being towed
If HB-IWF hadn’t crashed it would’ve likely ended up as a freighter for either FedEx or UPS
Most likely.
In 1997, South Korea's economy was not good... So there were not many passengers...
18:43 what airport is that?
Peking
41:22 Höri :-)
je parle pas anglais mais français j'habite en Suisse à Lausanne
Lovely Stuff; for air fans sending it out on twitter via @asiareportcom - greetings.
