  • She took care of her models as if they were her own children. The girls moved in with Eileen, Jerry and their children so that they would be protected and coached. Jerry Hall, Christie Brinkley, Rene Russo, Kim Basinger, Janice Dickinson, Lauren Hutton, Karen Graham, Susan Blakely, Cindy Crawford, Renée Simonsen, Carol Alt, Linda Evangelista, and Christy Turlington were among the models with Ford.
Eileen and her husband Jerry founded the agency in 194. It is one of the earliest and internationally best known modeling agencies in the world. 1995, Katie Ford took over her parents' agency after their retirement. Eileen died at age 92 on July 9, 2014.

Eileen had the biggest supermodels of the 70's with her: Cheryl, Cristina, Lauren Hutton, Rene Russo but John Casablancas started Elite, which actually paid models more and they got to keep more of their earnings than with say, Wilhemina who took 30% of her models earnings. Elite eventually took the top spot in the modeling wars: They had Kim Alexis, Janice,Kelly Emberg, Paulina Porizkova, Iman, Nancy Donahue, Carol Alt, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Elaine Irwin to name a few.

I was approached by a scout for Ford modeling agency at the opening of a Hudson's Department Store in 1977 when I was 17. I was engaged at the time and with my fiance who always worried that I would leave him to be a model, so I turned her down when she tried to give me phone numbers. I have always wondered if I made the mistake of a lifetime. I was 5'8" and 117lbs at the time. What were the odds of making it if you were scouted? I was always told that I looked like Katherine Ross and a little bit like Mariel Hemingway.

Wasn't Janice actually rejected because she was too exotic ?

Yes. Eileen told her that she would never model because she looked 'ethnic'. Eventually Eileen did sign her but Janice got even: When John Casablancas was starting Elite, promising models they would keep most of what they earned, a lot of models were leaving Ford and Janice was one of them. As she mentions, she finally got Eileen back.

*60 Minutes* did a feature on Eileen Ford and her model agency in the early 1980's, when a number of young girls signed by her agency complained that they weren't doing any modeling; instead, they essentially spent 100% of their time accompanying and entertaining clients at functions, shows, etc. When Ford was confronted with these complaints, she looked dumbfoundedly into the camera and said (paraphrasing, slightly), "I had no idea this was happening!" Your name is on the company and you had no idea what these young girls were doing?? Sure.

That happened mostly in Paris and possibly Milan. I get what you’re saying but how was she supposed to protect them in a foreign country when she’s all the way in New York?

Her name was on the company, that's how.
Paris and Milan aren't a million miles away, and she spoke of her own experience of being taken advantage of when she was a young model. If these young girls are under employment by her company, you damn well had better know what's going on.
