I am a huge formula 1 fan (never miss a race) and thought I would give some insight. F1 teams are setup with 2 drivers this ties in with game. 2nd I have seen where a team tells a winning driver hold back during a race and let another team member pass in order to let a drive maintain or move ahead in points because they may get closer to or clinch the championship. There is also the constructor awards for best manufacturer such as Mercedes, Ferrari, Renault, Red Bull etc. So there is more at stake than just a driver win.

I just flip all the cars back to the same side at the end of every round. It doesn.'t take that long and it gets rid of the round confusion between light and dark rounds

When you do reviews like this it would be really cool if you'd put a link to the related/similar game's review in the description.

Problems between grey and white background? Try buying a darker grey Pantone marker pen. Subtly shades the background with a thin wash of grey (still darker than what is already on the card) rather than a bold, solid colour.

Interesting review. I love TA but the idea of all the non player cars put me off this one too. Sounds like it is one to try before you buy.

      Buy Race! Formula 90 instead!

That is a great F1 racing game!

I played Thunder Alley and it was good. Played Race! Formula 90 yesterday and really liked it. Without having played Grand Prix, I would tend to Race as well. I think that captured F1 really good.

I noticed they used the Garuda Indonesia airline logo for one of the racing teams in the game. I wonder if all the teams are based on real life names/logos.

I do not think so. That would mean lots of royalties to pay for that.

I would still recommend Formula D over Grand Prix any day of the week. On the surface this seems like a decent game, but the card drafting mechanism is a snooze and just doesn't compare to the dynamism of dice rolling and the excitement that generates, and racing is nothing if not about the excitement.

Dice automates the game. Cards allow human decisions. In a racing game, human decisions lead to outcomes in a more deterministic way than combat, for example. So dice are more appropriate for combat because there is less control over the outcome. I feel that cards make the game more realistic. Dice turns players into the audience watching the race. A good example of dice automation is "What about baseball" a dice game where players make no decisions. It is a fully automated baseball game.
Rebellion base game has fully automated combat but the strategy is card based. The expansion of the game adds cards so it is less automated and players have a chance to strike a blow to the enemy..
In the end it is about taste. You like dice? Buy games that use dice. Like cards? Buy games that use cards.
There is a third mechanic that is called rock paper scissors, but it is not very common in tabletop games. It decides based on what players decide in a simultaneous move.

i really like to play devil's advocate and i can fully appreciate a balanced review but the ending to the analysis totally did not jive with the rest of it. In the end this sounds like a decent game but nowhere as good as other similar ones in the genre.

Has anyone made a note of the Team Name/Colours and Driver Names/Car Numbers? I've bought plain white F1 miniatures from Giles Designs at Shapeways.com and I want to paint them before I play the game. But as I've said before, I can't access my game cards until I open my game at Christmas.

It's alright saying you should buy this or that instead but half the games the americans take for granted we struggle to get over here in the UK. I have edged my bets and bought Grand Prix and ordered Formula D. Which is better card controlled or dice? I'll let you know after the Christmas holidays.

      So which one is it?

@@razzoc23 Hi. You won't believe this but I had forgotten ever writing these posts until you drew my attention to them. As for the answer to 'which method of car movement is better, card or dice?' I still don't have a definitive answer. I enjoy both methods so perhaps it doesn't really matter as long as the game is entertaining.
(Sorry I can't be more decisive).

I think it would be better if real drivers names and cars were used for identification purposes.

That means royalties to pay. Board game creators do not handle such big budgets.
