Never before in the 58 years that I have been on this planet, have I been so entertained by watching somebody defrost a freezer. Plus I learned something! You should take this show on the road! (oh that's right, it is) Well done!
Thank you for the tip on using the cutting boards. When using the hair drier you have to be very careful, I warped the back of ours the first time I defrosted the freezer. AND NO sharp metal things to pull off the ice, there is a gas in there, and if you puncher the plastic it will ruin the refer.
First off, y’all are awesome to watch. I don’t yet have a 5th Wheel but I started watching you guys to learn what I can before I purchase to maybe avoid making common mistakes. So thank you for that. It’s also cool to see how much you two do together! That’s another thing I look forward to...my wife and I tackling the chores together! Lastly, very funny outtakes! Keep’em coming!
I watched Getaway Couple video also and have adopted the "press and seal" method. Put that stuff on a warm freezer back and bottom and all you have to do is give it a pull and you are done. It works great and lets the freezer work efficiently. Thanks for the video. Love watching you two.
"No, it's definitely the right way." Love it! You guys are helping Paul and I so much! I am putting a ton of things you recommend onto my Amazon RV list to get just before we take delivery. Yay!!!
@@ChangingLanes Paul gets back (hopefully...you know the military, lol), Sept 8th. We will probably leave the 10th to go to Phoenix to pick it up. We plan to stay 2 nights at the dealership just to get to know the rv a little.
Your videos stand the test of time to be very sure. I am not sure how you manage to make even a boring subject like defrosting your freezer fun and interesting! Great tip on the cutting board in the freezer.
Always a pleasure to watch you guys, you are doing a great service to those of us out here who want to know the truth/true-to-life situations. You both are so good at this and explain the situations so well and are humble in your presentations! Even though you make mistakes which we all do you don't pretend to cover them up and make us think everything always goes smoothly, which we all know is not life. Keep doing your broadcasts as a team you guys are awesome! Thanks and God Bless
Awesome! I actually have a freezer at my s&b that isn’t frost-free - chosen specifically because auto defrost can dry out food in the freezer. Grew up defrosting our freezer twice a year with my mom, complete with pans of hot water. (Chad, you made me lol when you said “I’ve never done this before!”). Now going to use those flexible Pampered Chef-style cutting boards not only in our rv fridge but on on the side walls of the home freezer- woo hoo!
The outtakes are worth waiting for! You two crack me up! I am surprised the frost builds up so quickly. I love the cutting board idea and you can get those at Dollar Tree!
Hillarious... so entertaining watching you both do something most of us hate to do! Thanks for all the great tips again and again! You two make a great team!
The hairdryer with the cutting boards worked like a charm! I’ll definitely have to try that. I follow the Getaway Couple, but this looks easier. Thanks.
Howdy from Dayton, Oregon! My wife and I retired last march and went full time in July so we need to defrost!!! An RV site we follow on Facebook shared the link to tis video and I wanted to say.....thanks for the help!
Oh thank-you for the tutorial! I'm new at this too, and it's been 3 months and it's beginning to get pretty frosty back there. Thank-you so much I can't wait to try it, plus the cutting board sheets, great idea!!!! You two are awesome!
Your all are all so very refreshing. We have been full timing for 20 some years now. 6 months on a houseboat on lake Cumberland and 6 months a year in our class A.
Thank you for this video. While I've read about the cutting boards, it was great to see them in action and that they actually do work well. A big help to a newbie RVer.
I love watching ya'll! I watched this video and a few days later we defrosted our freezer using a blow dyer, so easy and we were done in about 10 minutes!! Thank you the the helpful video
We have been using the hair dryer method for 2 years now and it works great. The plastic cutting boards idea looks very interesting. We might have to try it. It's funny how long you let it go because as we speak we are losing a few inches from the buildup. It's more fun to watch videos then defrost our freezer.
Mountain Dew issue of 2019. LOL I wouldn't have been happy, either! Cutting boards!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wow, I just bought some new ones for the RV and yup, they're going in the freezer! I can't wait to see the Husbands reaction when I tell him where they're going! Nice work!
Catching up on your older videos - I looked to see if anyone had said anything about using one of the little battery operated fans on a shelf in the fridge - if you haven't done it, they work wonders to keep the air moving and help it cool more efficiently since we don't have the fans that house refers have in them. Love all your videos!
My wife has always used the hair dryer method in our travel trailer freezer. At home in our larger chest freezer she uses hot water. By the way, love your fridge! Great vlog thank you for sharing.
So clever...and I agree with the post below about getting an ice maker...we got 1 at Sam's in preparation to go full time...they work great...and I love ice!
I just put everything in an ice chest and let it defrost on it's own over night ,clean it really good .Turn it on in the morning and an hour or so later it is cool enough to restock.
Great video and cool tip on the cutting boards!! Love the way you insert the movie clips and you two work well as a team!! Looking forward to your next video whenever it comes out!👍🏼👍🏼
How am I just finding you guys??? Idk but I’m so glad I did! I binged on y’alls videos last night....and now again today! Thank you so much for dissecting all this cool information!! We’ve been staying in our 30 footer on Tug Hill (NY) for 2 years while building our ‘camp’ and going back and forth to our boat in Clayton! Safe travels, hope to find you guys someday! 😊😊
Just took me 1 hour for both sides… then used hot water for the bottoms and 2 bath towels to mop up the excess water. Going to go get those cutting boards tomorrow. Thanks y’all!
The "RV Freezer Defrost" was so funny, and informative. Can you share a link for plastic cutting boards or the thickness of the board. Keep on Changing Lanes. Thanks, George
I have the exact fridge/freezer and have used the hot water method with great success although it takes much longer. But you can put the hot water in and leave for a while. I tried the dryer method but it made me nervous about the heat. But am elated to see the plastic sheet addition and am anxious to give it a try. Thanks for sharing and happy travels.
Pretty cool tip with the cutting board sheets - you should save that ice for cocktail time! I was in a Grand Design 5th wheel this weekend at the Raleigh show - a Solitude, not a toy hauler - very impressive - but I really like yours. Yes, my wife's dryer cord looked like that. She would wrap it around the dryer cone for storage (Tara). All was well until the cord broke from the twisting and the thing caught fire (Tara). Don't wrap the cord, fold it loosely and neatly (Tara!).
Before you covered the back of your freezer with plastic cutting boards, I noticed two circular parts midway on the back wall of the freezer. These were covered over by the added boards. Could such covers impede freezer air flow?
Oh my goodness I noticed that as well, strictly because I would have done the same thing! 😂😂 Thought my OCD self would be the only one who'd notice! Great entertaining video guys, maybe next one should be all your outtakes! 😉😂
I love all the comments, do this or do that, I find it hilarious because we of course have not yet started our RV Journey.I use this term often and I'll use it as it relates to your freezer issues, "What a great problem to have". Lol!! I wish I had those problems because it would mean that I'm on the road RV'ing full time. Great stuff as always from you two and hilarious as well.Thank you
Thanks! And, yes... everyone had an opinion on how to do things, which is why we always say "this is how WE do it". LOL. But there may be some merit to the ones concerned about the sheets affecting the cooling distribution between the freezer and fridge. So, going to look into that... Thanks for watching! 😃
Always....You guys are on my Fave Fives, lol!!! I love you guys' videos, you cover the East Coast well and give us many ideas on where to go and what to do. Drivin' and vibin', Traveling Robert and I Love RV Life are up there too. But out West, Marc Guido with Grand Adventure has a super set of videos. Exactly what the doctor ordered when getting ready for this life. Thanks to all of you guys this is what keeps me sane (Hahaha) as I wait to retire and hit the road. Thanks guys
Wow! I can't believe I've never heard of the cutting board-sheet trick! I'll be trying it asap. Loved this video. Great job, as always, thanks for all your helpful tips. Oh, and LOVED the outtakes!!! :-):-) :-)
Great video...you guys are so entertaining. Additional advice...keep your ice cubes in a tuperware (or similar) sealed container when in the freezer. This will reduce the speed of frost buildup.
Great video! Enjoyed it and very informative. I like the idea of the cutting boards will have to try that next time we are on the road. We had to defrost ours only about 2 months into our trip but I am guessing that humidity has a lot to do with the amount of frost build up. We use a digital thermostat with 2 sensors, one in the freezer and the other in the fridge the display has a magnet and attaches to the front of the fridge we can monitor the temperature of the fridge if it gets too cold we can change the setting on the fridge it can get cold and drop to below 32 deg causing stuff in the fridge to freeze 🥶 I had a half dozen eggs 🥚 freeze at one point because we did not keep an eye on it. It’s interesting trying to fry an egg that has been frozen but it can be done. 🤓
Easy to Read: Refrigerator Freezer Thermometer Alarm, High & Low Temperature Alarms Settings www.amazon.com/dp/B01BMNTVQM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_iXdDCbFER1VS2 The unit I have is fairly old, I was not able to find it. However this is similar in fuction, not sure about this particular units performance.
Following your link, I found this one that monitors both fridge and freezer with remote display for the same price: amzn.to/2ThCFh1 Going to try it out!
Got a very simple way to defrost ice in seconds, Parents live in AZ and had their freezer ice up.. Go to the dollar store and pick up a few bottles of rubbing alcohol, pour it directly onto the ice, or put it in a spray bottle and spray it on. It turns ice to slush almost instantly. you can even do that on your truck windshield and you never have to scrape ice off the windshield again. A few tips from living in Colorado my whole life...lol
Hi guys. I guess this is where I am... I am watching a video on defrosting a freezer. What has my life come to... evidently watching ice melt! Oh no... I've become my grandparents... wait... no... they were much more fun than this! No this was not a great video (good but not great) but you guys are so entertaining I will watch frost removal! 😂 What have you done to me? You guys are great... big fun. Safe travels. I hope I run into you in NW ATL sometime... looking forward to your video about de-airing your tires every 5 months! Keep finding life guys. I love your zest! bg
great video. thanks for sharing the cutting board tip. You noted your fridge is colder than usual and you thought it might be because of the frost build up - but take a lookk for a white piece of plastic on the fins in the fridge...not all fridges have them, but some do...its called a thermistor...it slides up and down. its possible it got moved up. up is colder...anyhow "food" for thought! :)
This isn't an issue I knew anything about. Since we are still weekend/vacation week warriors, our freezer has plenty of time sitting in storage, doors open and off. Thanks for sharing this. I don't think I'd want a residential fridge in my RV, but good to know defrosting is required.
We are sorry you weren’t able to make the meetup😒 We certainly understand how frustrating it is to live with an illness and to not be able to do everything that you would like. You're right, sickness definitely does suck! 💚
Changing Lanes thanks. Next time we will meet up for sure *he says hopefully*. 😂 We have had to defrost a drink cooler (read college fridge) in our game room before. Man that frost can build up!!
I know our manual shows options for an ice maker, but rare to see them in RV fridges. Likely because the higher humidity that comes with them. Thanks for watching! 😃
We taped two plastic placemats together to cover the back of our 7 cubic foot refrigerator/freezer in our Airstream. Any frost sticks to the placemats and you can be decorative if you like. Ours has an owl on it.
Great videos! My wife and I are huge fans! Knowing how skilled you are from other projects you have shared? Have you considered installing a residential refrigerator, batteries, inverter, solar etc...?
We have an older stand up freezer in our Sticks & Bricks that I have to defrost a couple times a year, I wonder if the cutting boards would work in it.
We went out of our way to get a home fridge *without* the ice maker in the door. That just takes up a lot of extra space, and provides good opportunity for heat leakage. That fridge still has an automated ice maker that just dumps ice in a bucket inside. That ice gets kind of nasty over time, so we usually have the trip bail locked in place to disable the unit. If you use enough ice, I suppose it's worth it, but I'd rather just have a tray or two. As for defrosting the *wrong* way, I did that decades ago. A cold chisel was involved. Refrigerant may have escaped. Mistakes were made. Your hair dryer approach seems like a good one, especially with the cutting boards in place, including the bottom. I wonder if just putting saran wrap would do the same. That may tear too easily.
*I just installed that same Furion over the range Convection oven Microwave in my Heartland big country because the power converter went out and caused the GE over the range to blow up. Hmm my freezer defrosts when i empty t out every 2 weeks, i don't think i've had it yet were the back was frozen up and stayed that way. I still have that problem with mine freezing up for the last 6 months that i've been in mine and i've never had an issue every 2 weeks i buy new groceries and by the time i get to it it's defrosted. i still have issues with it freezing up but in this smaller RV i've been told it's because it's out of level but i am about to move into my 35 foot Big Country and it has the same size fridge freezer combo in it different name brand once is a Nor Cold, the other is A Dometic it being level plays a part in how well it freezes, i've seen that but i've also been looking at maybe giving up some storage space and putting in a Deep freezer, I have an idea where it would be cool to counter sink a chest freezer into the floor but you would have to remember to pull it up when you're ready to move each time or it could function as another sequence of the slide outs maybe. Also looking at different thicknesses of tarping material to drop down as underpinning specially in the winter to help keep the RV warmer. So far i think the insulated tarps are the way to go. but i don't need a 30X20' tarp hanging off the side of my RV so i believe i am going to have to find someone that can sew because i don't want the tarps to be any taller from the bottom of the coach than 4 feet. could be nice to have those roll up with a metal gear like the Awning does too. Yeah i have ideas popping up like that almost daily now that i'm full timing it* Even considering a different power set up that's not as sketchy as the power converter and 12v batteries. like i said the wheels are turning now may need to find someone to help design and implement some of this stuff though.
I just watched a video on how to defrost a freezer and a trailer and she defrosted hers let it dry and put press and seal on the back and a little up on the top of the freezer and down the back and when it what is time to defrost she just peel the paper off and the ice was on the paper slid it off cleaned it out and put everything back it was awesome
What happened is that the cutting board reduced the efficiency of heat ( or cold) transfer to the freezer , thus that is why the fridge itself got colder. Since plastic is an isolator , I don't think it's a good idea to do so.
@@ChangingLanes the way it works is that there is just one coolant line. It starts on top (since the coolant is colder ) and goes down by gravity to the bottom of the fridge. If you make the cold transfer less efficient in the freezer , the cold can't go as much in there and will go more in the fridge , especially the top of the fridge where the fins are. You will be more likely to have excess frost and things will tend to freeze more there. It won't become hot in the freezer because it will compensate by running more. I'm just saying that you reduce the overall efficiency. That is exactly the reason why you have to defrost it in the first place. Ice is an excellent isolator and when you don't remove it , it reduces the efficiency up until the point that you start having temperature problem :)
You may be right. I think after our next defrost, we'll take them out and see if the frost in the upper right of the fridge (where the exploding sodas were) goes away. We'll put out an update if the sheets prove to be detrimental. Thanks for the tips! 😊
Freezer tip! Freeze 8 oz of water in a small clear container. Once frozen, put a coin on top of the ice. Put it back in the freezer. If ever the coin ends up lower than half way, your freezer went below temp and your food is no good. Thats how you know if your freezer had gone off for a period of time while you were out and went back on again. You wouldn't know otherwise.
Great video. As a new 5th wheeler, we haven't really went anywhere, plan on Apache Junctio, Az for winter. Hve son and grandkids there. But what I would love to see is how you all plan your trips, lenght of stay and when to book your RV parks. Also where do you find the lonly spots, where you are in the middle of nowhere. I think other people would love to know some of the info also. Thanks.
Amazon sells these pads that sit at the bottom of the freezer and are supposed to keep your freezer from needing defrosting. I keep meaning to buy them but forget.
I’m just realizing some “younger folks” May never have had a refrigerator that wasn’t self defrosting! It’s been a long time for me, but we have a mini fridge at work that needs frequent work. No one wants to do it, but it bugs me when I can’t fir my lunch away at work 🤨
Have you ever had a soda blow up before? If that happened for the first time after adding the cutting boards, it might have been the cause. Does the unit have separate controls for temp in the freezer and fridge sections? Or I guess you could just set the temp for slightly warmer and monitor the thermometers in each part. Good video! Defrosting is something I haven’t had to do since the 80s at least, so good to have a reference. Do you ever get buildup or lots of condensate in the fridge section?
First soda blow up.. so it might be a factor.. need to try it without the sheets after next defrost and test the theory... Never any condensation in the fridge. A little frost in the upper right corner where those sodas were. We'll do some testing and follow up. 😎
Another great video! Thanks for the info and help. The hair dryer was how my Mom always did it...always worked well for us. Unrelated Ques: what type of walkie talkies do you have....anything you have learned or would change about them? Thanks! (Jane O.)

It’s interesting trying to fry an egg that has been frozen but it can be done. 🤓
Thermostat is a great addition.
I have a electronic thermostat that has a high / low alarm.
That would be cool (pun intended) 😊 Can you hear it with the door closed? Have a link? Thanks!

The unit I have is fairly old, I was not able to find it. However this is similar in fuction, not sure about this particular units performance.
Yes, I would love a link to that as well :)
Following your link, I found this one that monitors both fridge and freezer with remote display for the same price: amzn.to/2ThCFh1 Going to try it out!
The plastic cutting board is a great tip!
Interesting! Will check that out next time. Thanks for the tip!
Great video - thanks guys!! Sure beats the old putty knife, spatula or wood chisel method haha!!
So the first thing Christine noticed.....OMG, I got the same hair dryer! LMAO.
Great vid
Thanks, can't wait.
Good job, entertaining and thanks, great video.
Great info AND entertaining. Thank you.
Thanks for watching, Elizabeth! Hope you check out the rest of our channel! 😊
Boy! What Fun!
Great Video
I love your zest! bg
I’m in the UK and I’m just lovin you guys!!!! 👌👌 entertained me on my day off work lol
Welcome to our channel, Wendy! Thanks for following our adventures! 😊
Thanks I Love your videos.
You Two Are Awesome. ! 👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
great video. thanks for sharing the cutting board tip. :)
Thanks for the tip! I don't see anything, but I'll dig into the manual later. Thanks for watching! 😃
Portable counter top ice make is the way to go.
We've looked at those, but we just don't use ice enough to give up the counter space... Thanks for watching! 😃
😯no autodfrost in todays day & age of 4-5 G what a bummer😯 love you guys 💚💚💚👌💚💚💚
You two are a hoot!
Behold the power of the pink, hair dryer! Great video!
Thanks, JR! 😊
This isn't an issue I knew anything about. Since we are still weekend/vacation week warriors, our freezer has plenty of time sitting in storage, doors open and off. Thanks for sharing this. I don't think I'd want a residential fridge in my RV, but good to know defrosting is required.
Thanks for watching! 😃
Thumbs up for the last 10 seconds haha. Great video!!
Nice to see you guys! We hated to not see you guys in Austin for your meetup. Sickness sucks ... just saying.
We have had to defrost a drink cooler (read college fridge) in our game room before. Man that frost can build up!!
great video, we have a 2005 dutch star 38 foot class a with an rv fridge with an ice maker and water through the door
I know our manual shows options for an ice maker, but rare to see them in RV fridges. Likely because the higher humidity that comes with them. Thanks for watching! 😃
😂😂😂 Referring to last statement. Great watch as always!
Great job
Good video. Thanks, 😊
Good tip will have to try the plastic sheets after I get 4 more months of freeze ice on the 4 months worth that I now have.
You two are awesome!
Hi Guys was a great video good info talk to guys soon
George & Flor
"Today we're gonna defrost this bitch"! 😂😂 hilarious.
Yep, my wife's hair dryer cord drives me nuts!! They all do that.
We taped two plastic placemats together to cover the back of our 7 cubic foot refrigerator/freezer in our Airstream. Any frost sticks to the placemats and you can be decorative if you like. Ours has an owl on it.
Yea.. I think any thin plastic will work. Thanks for watching! 😃
Snow Owl?
We use a counter top ice maker and it’s great for drinks
Great videos! My wife and I are huge fans! Knowing how skilled you are from other projects you have shared? Have you considered installing a residential refrigerator, batteries, inverter, solar etc...?
Thanks! We do have a batteries and inverter video here: ruclips.net/video/1rPKWrXQYWA/видео.html
Lithium and solar in the near future... 😊
We have an older stand up freezer in our Sticks & Bricks that I have to defrost a couple times a year, I wonder if the cutting boards would work in it.
Don't see why it wouldn't.... 👍🏼
LOL "mistakes were made"!
You can find those cutting boards at just about any dollar store. I agree... saran wrap is likely too thin.
Umm...You already have an ice maker in the freezer... just use that ice for cocktails 🤣😉. Another great video guys!
Thanks, Dean! 😊
We'll look into that and report back if that's the case. But that top shelf had always been super cold.
Great tip!
We have water and ice on our refrigerator door, but I took the icemaker out of the freezer just so we would have more room for frozen foods.
Wow.. sounds like a lot of condensation? We never have any of that.. just the frost buildup.
Nice!!
Thanks.
That video (planning / navigating) is in the queue! Should be out in a few weeks! 👍🏽😊
Amazon sells these pads that sit at the bottom of the freezer and are supposed to keep your freezer from needing defrosting. I keep meaning to buy them but forget.
If you have a link, we'd love to check it out... Thanks!
Nice information
Do you travel with the propane on and frig running? 4-6 hours travel seems the freezer/refrigerator and food would get warn
Gee thanks, now I got to get me a pink hair dryer...lol
Thanks! (Jane O.)
Thanks! these are out walkies and they are solid! amzn.to/2EKAfPV
If ever interested in something from our videos, we have almost everything we've purchased (and recommend) in our Amazon store here: changinglanesrv.com/amazon
Thanks!😊
I just use a clamp fan. Just room temperature air and lots of it. No danger of harming your fridge and probably just as fast
Best part is the end. “Today we’re gonna defrost this bitch”. I carry a counter top ice maker in my RV.
We thought about the countertop ice maker, but we just don't use ice enough to give up the counter space... Thanks for watching! 😃
Both of my hair dryers the RV one and the sticks n bricks one have twisted cords.
I don't even understand how it happens. LOL -chad
@@ChangingLanes me either 😂
