  • Over the course of our first two years on the road, we've had a few things break, and we've broken a few things ourselves. Everything from running into signs and trees to crushing our pantry door. We've made some mistakes! RVs, by nature, just tent to break also. It's just an RV thing whether you're in a million-dollar Prevost, or a$10K Pop-up. Most just fall into the Sh$% Happens category!
In this video, we cover every single thing that has broken or we broke:
    Pin Box
    Furnace
    Tail Light Wiring
    Body / Paint Damage
    Slide Ski
    Slide Topper
Pantry Door Crushed by Kitchen Slide
    Cabinet Door Frost Scratches
    Awning Light Fuses
    Garage Tie-Downs
    Fuel Pump
    Hydraulic Systems Fuse
    Levelers Popping
    Front CAP LEDs
    Microwave / Convection Oven
    Under-Bed Storage Hinges
    Screen Door
    Fireplace Squeaking
    Awning Arm Caps
    MaxAir Fan Cover Lift
    Leaf Spring!
Big giant shout out to Grand Design RV for having such great customer support that we know they have out back while under warranty.
And a HUGE Bonus thank you to Coulee Region RV Center for some AMAZING last-minute support!

I've had some if not most of the same problems. Broken door from the slide out, yep done that. Busted taillight from backing into a post, done that. Scratch down the side from my own mailbox! Dumb mistakes really hurt my feeling and pride but I sure learned from them.
Dang hydraulic fuse got me on a Sunday morning! Mobile tech guy helped me by phone diagnosis and then a temporary fix to get me on the road.
NEW GAS CANS suck! Easy fix though. Throw all the EPA stuff away and go to a Tractor Supply or auto parts store. They sell a universal kit with all the old school parts to make the thing pour gas like it is supposed to.

Thank goodness I watched this. My man crush on Chad was strong, the ease he has explaining complex situations, the tools stored in the basement and his ability to use those tools ……what more can I say - I wanted to be like Chad. I’m thinking he was an ET (for those not in the know ET stands for extra testicle) in the Navy because of his smarts and common sense. 5 scratch’s - so he is human, a human that can fix his own errors in judgement. I have not watched a video production of Changing Lanes that I did not enjoy or learn something. I appreciate both of your hard work and hope to meet you on the road in a million years when I retire and go live the RV life for a couple of years. BZ friends.

I drove down to Rome, from Germany, in 1973, I bought a purple 1963 VW van for the trip. Bought it for $125. I outbid an Army guy. We were camping at Livorno near Pisa. Also camping there was a group of Aussies who were traveling in a pop up top VW van. They had the entire engine laid out on a large tarp. Pistons, rods, rings, heads, etc. There were rebuilding the whole thing. Right in the forest, right near the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Talk about a break down challenge...

We really love your channel, you guys are awesome, we have been on the road for many years and still learn something new from every one of your videos. Everything you say is well thought out, thoroughly researched, and we can relate to it all.
Leaf Springs - Our first experience with a broken leaf spring, on a new rig, was about 2 1/2 years in at about 15,000 miles of towing. Found a trailer parts dealer, bought 4 new spring packs ( 2 axle rig) for about $150 and $50 for new shackle nuts and bolts at NAPA and 3 hours later - all new springs - on the road again. Research of the subject suggested replacing the springs every 12.000 miles or so.....what a concept!
If you spend much time towing in places like the 4 corners area you know how bad the whoop-de-dos can beat up your rig, so our new maintenance schedule for the mobility portion of our rig includes (at a minimum), new springs, wheel bearings, races, seals, grease and electric brakes every 12,000 towed miles or once a year, which ever comes first. Heck, while you have the wheels off, the whole process only takes 6 or 7 hours and about $600 (or less) for spindles out replacement parts. Might as well rotate the tires while you have them off. We consider this a small investment for helping insure not being stranded on the side of a lonely (or busy) road trying to repair damage to what is arguably some of the most important parts of your rig.
This process also gives us a up close and personal visit with the under side of the rig, the tires & wheels, spindles, electric brake wiring, frame, equalizers, axles, leaks, underbelly, etc.. We usually save out at least one set of springs and a hub assembly from the "old parts"as an emergency "spare" in case the unthinkable happens. This process also seems to improve towing mpg slightly, tire longevity, as well peace of mind.
Please keep up the wonderful content and we will see y'all on the road.

Glass Doors on Cabinets! I just bought a new Airstream. Wife and I really liked the higher end models until we saw the glass cabinet doors. They looked like major trouble when going down the road. We decided to go with the Flying Cloud because it had wooden doors on the cabinets. We still remove things and place them in tote's for traveling. So far no scratches on the Aluminum skin inside the cabinets or on the wooden doors. We didn't get the leather seats either, but I can recover them myself using the same leather that Airstream features on the more expensive models for thousands less than the cost different between our model and the model that featured the leather.

I totally agree with you about the earthquake thing. The roads are horrible. Especially bridges and overpasses. It seems like there is a dip in the road before and after. The garage in our 5th wheel is like the last car on a roller coaster. This video is a great help, as a matter of fact, all of your videos help us. I scraped twenty feet of roofing off the corner of ours on the goat track (south) side of Fort DeSoto. Luckily I was able to get roofing repair material at the Tampa Campers world and fixed it on site. That repair is still there. Scratches and dings are my merit badges. Slide toppers last about three years. The vinyl gets brittle. Same with the awning fabric. You do not have to replace the roller which GD sent you. Just the fabric. You can get fabric on eBay or Amazon for reasonable prices. I am on my third awning and slide fabrics in ten years. The Carefree awnings were less durable than the cheapo I got off eBay.

Hey Chad and Tara, I'm sure someone has or you already know this or learned it by now, however the fuel pump gum up issue seems to be pretty common with fuel today and the percent of ethanol in it. Perhaps putting Sta-bil with every fill up both tanks will probably help with this problem. The ethanol crystallizes very easy causing such problems. Where possible on your rips, be sure to examine how much ethanol is in the fuel you are getting for it, the common is 10% however we have come across some station in the plain states that as much as 20% in it. BTW this is a great video as i am one of those people who probably experience this, kinda tim taylor type you know....

You are absolutely right about Grand Design standing behind their product. Tomorrow, I go to a GD to check hot why the hot water heater only works on 110, how to fix a door that fell off as well as trim pieces and generally checkit for anything that the customer is concerned about. Karen in the warranty department even said they will pay for the service call! I can only think of 2 others that do that, DRV and Tiffin, which I am working on now. Grand Design, DRV and Tiffin are in my book the only 3 rigs to buy!. Excellent customer service!!

Totally relate, like fixing stuff, however when things do happen your anxiety can get high at first, it never happens on a Monday, always on a Friday or weekend. Speaking of great dealers, Transwest was great, had a fan cover blow off of our roof driving through Colorado (on Friday), it was raining hard, we called ahead and they replaced it right in the parking lot for us and only charged us like $20 for the new cover. I could have replaced it, but they just brought a ladder out and did it for us. We didn't have a ladder on our toy hauler at the time.

Although it's known that y'all are Grand Design Ambassadors, I am certain that your first few repairs, during the warranty period, would have been taken care of by GD regardless. Never-the-less y'all (perhaps all GD owners) are very fortunate that GD takes care of it's customers. I have a different brand of fifth wheel, I won't name any names but there logo is a Blue Jay :-). Warranty repairs MUST be accomplished through one of their certified dealers. If it's an emergency, they will suggest a local mobile repair or dealer, but that will be rare. As far as shipping parts directly to the customer … a big GIANT maybe … it would have to be a GIANT emergency.

    • @ChangingLanes
      @ChangingLanes  4 года назад +1

Yes.. our first few warranty claims were before we even launched our youtube channel and well before we were ambassadors. GDRV really takes care of their customers! 👍🏼 We've heard other manufacturers don't have this kind of direct relationship. Good to hear it first-hand. A Jayco Seismic was in the top running when we were narrowing down our selection. They seem like they are pretty comparable in build though, so hopefully you've not had too many issues.. 😊

So the GetAwayCouple upgraded their Solitude to independent suspension and hydraulic disk brakes. Is that something you would consider for your Momentum in the future? I think one of the best items I have learned from you guys, and the other Grand Design owners (KYD, GAC, etc), is when you buy your RV, you are also 'buying' the dealership, and the manufacturer (which could be more important, as you described, than the dealer). The biggest lesson here...learn how to fix your own RV and only go to the "professionals" when all else fails. I have a Radiance by Cruiser RV and I have had only a few minor problems and they have been real good about tech support and sending me the necessary parts. I had a Keystone Laredo before....not such a good experience with there support. Little know fact but it is cheaper for the manufacturer to send you the part than paying the dealer the labor to replace said part (and everything else they break...err...find wrong along the way!)

We’ve had some of the same things happen but yes the biggest is broken leaf spring we carry a brand new extra one of those as well as a set of shackles and wet bolts it’s minor stuff for storage area but most important to keep trucking down the road! Great video I’ll be curious too see what you do on the popping/ changing fluids mines starting do do it now but it’s in storage till April so I’ll worry about it then

@Jack Spratt grand design had a huge problem with lippert leaf springs flattening also breaking and it had nothing to do with overloading, we only haul one motorcycle in the rear to sturgis and only weekend camp so there’s no way I was overloaded! Plus this is the reason there using dexter axels now

Hey guys love the videos. Just wanted to ask if you have clearance issues with the new pin box between the bed and trailer frame when turning. We upgraded to the flex air on our 397 and have the pin box set up one hole higher than yours and run in to clearance issues with tonneau cover frame. Were still playing with the height adjustments on our b&w companion. My wife and I are from beautiful western WI @ La Crosse and agree Coulee Region Rv service is excellent.

No issues. We did have to do some playing with the hitch to get the RV back to level.

Hey Chad--I stopped the video at 8:42 and had to post! For technical assistance Grand Design also now has their new Technical Forum (where I'm a moderator). It's a forum owned and operated by Grand Design where owners (like me) help other owners with problems. I just linked this video where you talked about the furnace problem to an owner with a 369RL having a similar issue. I hope you'll check out the forum and plug it when you get the chance (Emily will approve--trust me!). Note that all the moderators and members that assist are unpaid volunteers--no one gets a thing other than the satisfaction of helping other GD owners. I'd link to the owner's forum here but not sure it you want me to do that--it's linked right off GD's GDRV4Life home page.

    • @ReflectedMiles

So true. And it's also useful to take whatever the marketing numbers are for anything structure-related and multiply them by 20% to get real-world values. So if they say they have a tie-down rated at 2,500 lbs., anything exceeding 500 lbs. is going to tear it up, sometimes even less. If they say you have insulation that is R40, that means you should expect and trust no more than R8 performance in severe weather. It's just the nature of a largely unregulated, aesthetics- and hype-driven industry with little real engineering involved.

Great Video. I just have to wonder...Would Grand Design or any other RV Mfg. be as responsive for someone without a RUclips channel that would possibly provide bad publicity if they didn't provide great customer service. Do you think you received special treatment?

When you are travelling from locations, what camera's are you using, and where do you mount them to get such clear shots? Looks great. But the bye, just bought one of those new fuel tanks. What a challenge. I work in the boat industry and the hoops we jump through are getting incredibly silly.

My family is looking at getting our first Travel Trailer for our family of 5. We will be living in it for a year or 2 while building a home. In yalls honest opinion, after listening to this video, would you recommend just getting a newer used one or brand new? If new ones have problems too, why even waste depreciation money on them? Just curious. We will be buying with cash so not sure if that would change this decision or not whether to go new or used. Any info is appreciated.

    • @ChangingLanes
      @ChangingLanes  4 года назад

Certainly buying used is the most economical option in terms of RV value. But, you won't get the warranty in most cases. For us, we wanted very specific options and a factory warranty, so we ordered ours. Our hope is that we've negated much of the depreciation hit with investments in upgrades over time, but we will certainly lose money. If you can find a late model used with everything you want and get it inspected by an RVIA certified inspector, that is likely the best way to go. The issue is finding one. Many have told us they have a hard time finding grand designs used. Hope that helps!
