I saw this Band In 1969 at the Paradiso , Amsterdam and saw a GREAT show under the influence of good smoking dope offcourse !!!! What a great time we were livin in !!!! I wish I could go back again Hehe.

При всём моём уважении к ранним Блэк Сэббэт эта вещь уделывает их на пару голов! Храню эту дебютную пластинку (от поляков) до сих пор и с удовольствием слушаю!
I am 53 now and my dad had the single when I was about 5 in 1969, I remember it so clearly, the words Race With The Devil and that insane laughter frightened the life out of me and gave me nightmares! I was exposed to way too many horror films! lol
Peter, like me you show your age! I call 'em groups too, but 'band' is the 'in' word the days, eh? Back then they were all 'groups' though, and that was good enough for me too! Really annoys me when nowadays they call these namby-pamby boy and girl groups 'bands' though. A 'band' is a group who actually play instruments, not stand around wiggling as they each take their turn to justify their presence by singing their little bit. Long live the past and real music.
@@HonoraryGreek That's what I say is the difference between "REAL TALENT" and flash in the pans. Real music includes instruments, not just kids and young adult getting up singing bits to computerized noise and using autotune to make their crappy voice sound like every other pop star!
Written by my mates Dad Johnny Goodison, formerly of the original line up of ‘Brotherhood of Man’, where he co-wrote ‘United we Stand’. He also wrote for Status Quo and the Bay City Rollers. Sadly my mate Paul(Goody) and his Dad are no longer with us. RIP x
I used to sit next to my old friend Brian "Louie" Farell at Mayfield Boys back in the day, always tapping on his desk and his drum kit in his basement. Never knew he was in "The Gun" until today. Only 55 years too late, but well done mate great track.
I PLAYED THIS ALBUM SO MUCH I DAM NEAR WORE IT OUT !! I STILL HAVE THE ALBUM AND THE CD OF GUN AND THEIR 2ND ALBUM , GUNSITE !! PAUL AND HIS BROTHER ADRIAN GURVITZ , LATER CHANGED 2 CURTIS , FORMED GUN IN THE 60'S . I JOINED A BAND WHO PLAYED THEIR HIT GUN , I HAD 2 LEARN THE DRUM PARTS 2 A T , 1 OF THE HARDEST DRUM BEATS I EVER HAD 2 LEARN !! STILL PLAY THE GUN CD AND LOVE IT LIKE I DID THE FIRST TIME I HEARD IT !!
The Gurvitz brothers teamed up with GingerBaker to form Baker Gurvitz Army..later 3 man army, and joined moody blues drummer Graeme edge to form the Graeme Edge band featuring Adrian Gurvitz,Adrian later had a big solo hit single with "Classic"
Familiar with Girlschool and Judas Priest's cover versions but NOT the original until now - this is impressively fast and heavy for a song written in the 1960's. I also love the guitarist's afro + sideburns combination.
Hooked at age 13 by that brilliant little guitar 'squeal' @ 1.24....seeing Adrian Gurvitz live tonight - tempted to ask him to sign the sleeve of my copy of this amazing 45. Thanks for sharing this.
Without a doubt ! I stood 3' from him at the Mayfair, Newcastle when he blasted this out on his Gibson Gold top ! i'm 70 now and his performance was un -forgettable. ps i still have the single. It has to be 54 years ago.
I grew up with Adrian Gurvitz's song "Classic" and just a knowledge that he'd had some big hit in the 1960s but not actually knowing it was a rock track like this..
Saw them 69 in Berlin, my lost Youth... Wiki writes: As the lead guitarist and singer of the band The Gun, Gurvitz had his first major hit with "Race with the Devil" at age 18. Issued as a single in October 1968, it reached the Top 10 in the UK Singles Chart and, in March 1969, it also became a big hit in many European countries.[10] Jimi Hendrix quoted the song's riff during his song "Machine Gun" at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970.
Whenever i play this song, or Magnum's Invasion for young rock fans it always blows their minds that people were playing this kind of music back in the 'Jurassic Period '.
I thought Girlschool was covering Black Oak Arkansas. I thought Girlschool changed up the "original" and made it better, but it turns out Black Oak Arkansas actually changed up the original and made it worse, and Girlschool made it better again.
a great record which has triggered great memories for me. When this record was around i was only 9 years old. A super record which featured the great Adrian Gurvitz you know the classic geezer from 1982.
@@Sillimant_ On the radio??? Where do you live? Never heard it in the 55 years I've been around, but to be fair, I DO live in Canada and wasn't exposed to a lot of US underground or obscure stuff back in the 70's or 80;s
ONE OF MY TOP 100 ROCK CLASSICS FAVORITES. NEXT AFTER THIS ONE IS LOVE SCULPTURE - SABRE DANCE., BLACK SABBATH - PARANOID, DEEP PURPLE - BLACK NIGHT, ROLLING STONES - PAINT IT BLACK
There was no "prog" or ""metal" when this recording was made, so The Gun did BOTH. An incredible exploration that works! Yes, the vinyl sounds worlds better as did so many rock recordings of the period. Of particular note are the amazing trumpet parts throughout the album which make a unique combination with the blazing guitar and Adrian Gurvitz was probably the most successful white boy who ever wore a Fro. I wouldn't take the condescending commentary of Andy Thomas too seriously. Ginger Baker didn't get along with ANYBODY!! Read up on the photo sessions for GOODBYE CREAM and you'll learn how impossible he was to work with. THE GUN later became THREE MAN ARMY who also did some stellar hard rock recordings and yes, I have to agree that Baker/Gurvitz Army was quite a disappointment. The first GUN album is absolute classic and its use of multi-tracked guitar has STILL never been equaled anywhere.
Check into "Blue Cheer" 1968 1969.. their cover of summertime blues, or original out of focus.. in fact they even appeared on American Bandstand in '68 (very unusual for them).lots of metal bands then, but they called it "underground rock".. because most radio stations wouldn't play their music, so they relied on wom, through live performances, and the few FM stations around..
Man. This song was way ahead of it's time. Fantastic.
Very heavy for 1969 good tune.
Not ahead. Just in time. 69 at his best
just can't stop listening this!
Однозначно!
1968. An absolute master class in music.

Great song. Why doesn't this funky proto-heavy-metal song get any radio play today? It's so damn good.
It's the same with "Run Run Run" Jo jo Gunne. Never gets airplay.

heard in today on a german radio station :)
Crazy Arthur Brown meets Cream. They dont make 'em like they used to!

Back here listening to this classic again, it never ages! Great guitar playing.
Конец 70 ых, учился в школе, где то услышал эту, вещь, реально башню снесло, мощная песня. Long live Rock n roll.
Как молоды мы были... а что теперь? Неужели старость, и жизнь пролетает?
Saw the group in Bristol about this time. I told them they were one of the most powerful group of three i had heard live, brilliant group.

Thank you for posting this; the song and performance are brilliant! I never knew that during the Tom Baker era Doctor Who played rock in the TARDIS!

Remember This Band on TOTP back in 1960s when I was at School. Great one.
I was 4 years old when this came out and the laugh terrified me!!!!
This song stacks up well today , love the last min riff , out of this world 🤘

The laugh is the best. It makes the song different. It gives it that little bit of the evil it needs for the title.
We were so lucky back in the day
Fantastic hardrock in 1968! 😛😲👍
Super classic song 👌🎸🎸🎶🥁🎙️
It may have been said already but Their album cover artwork was the first by Roger Dean who did most of the Yes LP's
And the bass player did well on Flash, Peter Banks' group after he had been kicked out of Yes when they were still good.
Jon Anderson also sang with Gun for a short spell.
thanks danny
Heard this as question on Ken Bruce's Popmaster quiz this morning, then I looked it up. Brilliant guitar playing. Great riff.
60s-70s pre-Metal Prog Rocks were great.
I used to play with the drummers son in Tony Hill's Fiction (we've just reformed by-the-way). Great track
I guess I just liked the number .I still play it on my gigs and it goes down a storm. No slur intended on your good self .Regards John De Barra.
Pure heavy metal classic. nothing less.
AxHakker, This isn’t Heavy Metal lol. If anything, this is Proto Metal.
Proto-hard rock, arguably into early 1970s hard rock territory.
The album's cover though qualifies for early metal album covers :)
Avec mon pote Marcel, et avec les moyens de l'époque c'est un morceau que nous jouions au Capucin c’était la bonne époque
I could kick my wardrobe to death whilst listening to this.
i think i might be able too.if iwas still 28,when this single came out.
Il y a 49 ans c' était un des morceaux favoris que nous jouions le dimanche après-midi dans les thés dansants. Que de bons souvenirs !!!
Saw them once when this was in the charts, Narbeth or Tenby somewhere down there, they were very good and very loud
So this is the early form of heavy metal. Damn!
