The world would be a better place if that plane landed safely 😒
😢
ong i swr on everything if all of lynrd skynrd was alive they’d be known as the greatest guitarist to ever live. it’s unfortunate how much talent went undiscovered.
It's easy for me to say now, I mean who knows, but I don't think I'd ever have gotten on that plane. Who ever heard of, "Yeah the right engine is spittin 10 foot long plumes of fire but a mechanic will meet us at our next stop?" Hundreds & hundreds of miles away? Screw that! I wouldn't get in a CAR acting up like that, let alone an airplane. Head of security for Skynyrd, Gene Odom, said something like he almost took an axe to the tires of the plane to ground it right there on the runway & force the pilots to wait for a mechanic...sigh. Always follow your gut instinct, man. Plus the plane sat there for a half hour, engine running just to run the a/c, burning precious gallons of fuel while the band was back at the hotel waiting for limos that never showed up...what a disaster.
Just think of all the music they could've made
Couldn't agree more. What it would be like to have a beer with RVZ
When you seek out the live version of a song from 1977 and it’s 2023, you know that is a kick ass song
I m so glad I saw them in concert b/4 that plane crash ! Thanks for a lifetime of memory, legends of southern rock 1!!
It's 2024...I think they we're hitting a huge peak is style music lyrics and just powerful killer solos...
This song has it all...
Unbelievable what happened to these band members...
I heard they ran out of fuel?
How does that happen?
Check the damn gauges and make sure it's full ..
The pilot must have been stoned or whoever he trusted was stoned and didn't do it..
It could have been a huge miscommunication...
Cost lives and tragedy and put every band member on another trajectory cut everyone's life short.
@g47: Saw 'em a week before this performance. Worse seats in the house - outdoors football stadium 70,000 seats & field packed solid. Top row opposite end of the stage (least 150 yards from) but I CAN say - proudly - saw precrash lineup live.
One of my all time faves.❤❤

Yeah amazing musicians
Your right , The best ever i'm a stones fan and one year they backed the Who up and took over the concert that should tell you something right there , The original Skynyard boys .
Just because a few band members died tragically rendering the band not as capable doesn't mean another band can't touch them. They were great, true but bands have come close. One I can think of is the black crowes.
Fuzzy Ewok I agree , I Love the black crowes , I'm a Georgia native and a lot of great bands come out of Ga .

“ Whiskey bottles, and brand new cars, oak tree you’re in my way” What a fantastic intro to a great song!
I know that know one will believe this, but this intro was a question in a classroom one morning. It was a fill in the blank verbally asked and open to the whole class. .
Whiskey bottles and brand new cars _____________?
Everyone just had a blank look on their face..
.....me somewhat hung over, after a pause of silence said: ..oak tree, you're in my way. Everyone except the teacher was even more dumb founded. He said; John gets a Gold Star for that one today... Still, everyone else was speechless and dumb founded...??
Now you're likely wondering; What subject of class would this be..??
...Sunday school. Even I don't know how it fit in other to say that it just happen to be a flash back in the teacher's mind.. Or maybe the Spirit was calling me out for having been partying into the early morning hours not so many hours prior..??
It really happened, this whole song is about Gary, yet he was the last man standing
The first line actually happened, the whole song is about Gary and the wild life style he lived. He pulled out real fast in a brand new car and hit an oak tree. “The smell of death that surrounds you” he was shooting up that’s why they say “Don’t go sticking those needles in your arm “ and “ one more drink fool would drown you “ yet he was the last man standing.
@@DennisBTV Amazing song about a true evrnt. Crazy!
The song is about Gary rossington. He was stoned and wrecked his car delaying a tour. Ronnie was pissed and wrote this
A telltale sign of a great band is how well they sound live. Lynyrd Skynerd was the best at live performances, hands down.
yes and now with AI this faking it will go atomic, not only won't know what is good but we won't even know what is real.
And that is how civilization dies, long before the robosts launch the nukes at us.
Thay started off a little shaky but were hitting on all cylinders by mid song. You could tell this was a new song.
Pink Floyd was pretty amazing live. 2 great bands❤
@TheOneAboveAll1369 LOL, we both know the answer to that question. Both were great bands without question. Personally, I'd put Skynyrd above Zeppelin but that's just my opinion.
The addition of Stevie Gaines to the band meant the band was about to explode. Three different lead guitars with complementary styles. Ronnie was just the genius to meld them together into that great final album. The plane crash was the worst news in the history of rock and roll. There is no comparison.
Absolutely the worst news...can't think of another that compares musically when it comes to cutting off of potential that was just in the process of exploding
As for your three guitar army comment, recall before Steve Gaines joined, Ed King was a third lead guitarist. Ed King is great and very much alive. Steve Gaines was awesome as was Allen, and of course Gary who smoked that Gibson for all she's worth.
I couldn't agree with you more on all counts. I am still grieving.
I just found this and I've watched it like 6 times.Great band who were just about to go supergroup status when that tragedy happened . Such a shame.

This song is fuckin incredible, and the band is comparable to Zeppelin on the scale of pure skill.
So Crisp. And we actually lived that shit in the early 80s with the weed and the blow, minus the whiskey bottles, it was just wine & beer then.
Super rare footage, definitely my favorite song by Lynyrd Skynyrd, the sky was the limit for these guys, such a tragic tragedy, although this live version sounds a little too slow.

Gary Rossington is one of the most talented, gifted, creative and underrated guitar players who ever lived and that is a fact.
Couldn't agree more, he is the one the molded that southern rock solo sound long before anyone ever thought of it. Gary is a guitar God in my opinion, if met him several times through meet and greets and hes the exact same man everytime, so humble and appreciative of his fans and never goes without mentioning how he wouldnt be who he is or where he is had it not been for his fallen freebird brothers and sisters. It's truly a shame people bash Gary for keeping on touring when he has all rights to do so, he was a original founding member and his never left the band so he should have all the right in the world to keep his and his brothers music alive until hes ready to retire. Gary Rossington is the main reason I picked up a guitar and learned to play. Which I'm nowhere near close to as good as Gary but I give it my all lol. Gary is a awesome guy and I'll support him and the current lynyrd skynyrd until the day I die.

I saw them 11 days before in Oakland...There is video of Free Bird and Sweet Home Alabama, here on RUclips. They double headlined with Peter Frampton who was still riding Frampton Comes Alive.... Unfortunately for him he closed the show and had to follow Skynyrd - I think half of the crowd left during his set. I started with this band in the early 70 ‘s and still have every album they released RIP L/S
When this footage was taken in the Summer of '77, there was NO ONE that could match the intensity of this band. I remember this time oh so well. Watching the guitar soloing between Allen and Steve, then later with Gary, brings a chill up my spine and a tear to my eyes. Ronnie Van Zant was an American Icon- one of the best frontmen to have ever graced a stage- bare feet and all. No one can replace him or these musicians. Those who play as a tribute band today using their name are but a shadow of the real thing. Rock on proud bird!
Man Steve Gaines just made the band better than it had ever been with his amazing bluesy playing, almost like he completed the line-up of the band, he was the final piece to the puzzle of musical perfection. Goddamn shame what happened.
Exactly. The plane crash was a monumental tragedy in and of itself, but it also deprived the world of the music that LS was destined to make with this lineup. Van Zant and Gaines were just getting started...
Right there with you brother
Seriously man. Sucks pretty hard about what happened. Steve Gaines was going to be the next GUITAR HERO. There are a lot of great players but he was going to be as known as Jimi Page/Duane Allman/Eric Clapton are in my opinion.
I agree, but think the classic sound of Skynyrd is Rossington-Collins. Steven brought another element that sound - very different. Interesting to see how his distinctive voice would have shaped the original band while complementing Rossington-Collins - had there been no crash.
Man, Gaines was so good you hit the nail on the head that he was the final piece of the puzzle
If you can hold a cigarette in your picking hand while you play lead guitar, you might be Gary Rossington.
Jimmy Lewis Stevie Ray did that, too.

If you're in a band with Gary Rossington and Steve Gaines and are considered the best guitar player in the band by your bandmates you might be Allen Collins.
Allen Collins, was and still a Rock God.
I just think all three were equally talented with their individual style. I saw them in concert before and after the plane crash. I could tell a big difference with Steve Gains missing playing guitar 🎸
As skynyrd would say...you got that right
Allan Larkin Collins was without a doubt the better guitar player, but all were great. so that says how good Allan really was. guitar God

Best Studio band was Zeppelin. They were brutal live. They never rehearsed. Watch the concert in Madison square garden. It's painful. It's hard to argue that Skynyrd isn't on top. They sounded live like they did the studio. Although I would say in their prime's AC/DC and THE WHO are close.

I love how Gary leads off the song by first lead, then as the next lead comes he backs up looks towards Steve, and apparently gives Steve the nod to go ahead to take the lead, such beautiful cooperation they head as three lead guitar players, no jealousy, or hostile competician just pure smooth easy unity with the three of them loving and respecting each others talent and place in the band, such a great view of talent.
Ronnie sure knew how to put things together didn't he.
Ronnie Van Zant... Sounds just as good live as he does in the studio. Few artists are able to give that good of a live vocal performance.

Love that Steve, Gary, and Allen are playing different guitars and leads. "Hell yeah!"
The irony - the song was about the only one original member who is still alive (as of 2019). And thankfully so. We are watching people perform who have only 3 more months to live having no idea the legacy they would leave in terms of music, family, and fans. They created something truly unique before some of them even knew how to play their instruments. This video shows the power of friendship, love, and dedication to your craft. Oh.....and Jim Beam. :)

@@DougCanney1 wow that’s so cool I would love to have a jam on that les Paul it sounded so good it had a very Stratocaster vibe in one of the positions it is a beautiful guitar and owned by a legend
@@MrDannyboyhall I asked her if I could see it one day, she said maybe.
I've always loved Lynard Skynyrd. Here it is, 2022, I'm 59 years old, and this is the first time I've seen them perform. As far as I'm concerned, when Ronnie died, so did the band. Nobody else could replace his vocals. Great music
I'm 55 and I 107% agree Lynyrd Skynyrd died with Ronnie Van Zant !!
Not to be disrespectful to your comment because I totally agree but let’s be thankful to Gary and Johnny and all the others that have tirelessly dedicated their lives to keep their music alive. God bless them all. Dead and alive!
This, band could stay with anybody EVER!!!!🧡
I agree with You but also think no body go's to see them know without knowing it's a different band, I've saw last time about 15 years ago. The band was very very good. They are keeping a part of the music alive
😢 R.I.P GARY WE LOVE YOU BROTHER KEEP ROCKING IT IN HEAVEN
I have never seen a band with THREE guitarist let alone THREE guitarist that played so well together. They shifted from one guitar to the other seamlessly to the point where most people don't even notice. They were master musicians.
Not saying they are as good, but iron maiden have 3 guitarists.
Indeed
Lucky. They practice constantly, toured endlessly and partied hard. Nothing like them since....
Good point Connor. Saw Maiden in japan 95. Ok...decent. Their FIRST album was great.
IMHO they don't compare to Skynryd. never saw skynrd live. Both great music though
@@scottcantor1842 thanks mate, and I agree. Maiden are a great band, but they are just no comparison to skynyrd. I think Maiden should have stopped when they were still good, they have been milking their name with average to bad albums for the last 20 years or more lol. Kinda like Megadeth. I love Megadeth but I wish they stopped making albums when they were still amazing
It's hard to watch Ronnie, Stevie and Cassie and imagine that few months after they would not belong to this anymore. They were so good and happy, living the best artistic moment... The world is unfair.
How good is a song when they say they have this new song coming out on an album and then they play 3 notes before you realize IT KICKS ASS. What a group. RIP boys you were all FUCKING AWESOME. Never forgotten
RIP Gary Rossington. One of the best to ever do it
One of the best bands in history
you got that right 👍
+The Guitar Lover thank you 👍
No, you _sure_ got that right.
stillunbroken100 yes
This incredible band had songs such as this warning about the self destructiveness of drug abuse, Saturday Night Special about the lack of responsibility with guns, songs about accepting people who they are despite race (The Ballad of Curtis Lowe), songs about finding your self (All I Can Do Is Write About It), songs about family (Was I Right or Wrong)...I could go on but lets just leave it at this...Ronnie Van Zant was a story teller...a consummate song writer about life. Carpe diem.
Well ahead of their time with their songs of warning, which were exceptional pieces of music in their own right...
The greatest American band
This song made me never do blow again.
@@dcs2690 this song always made wanna do blow...lol
@@Rockandrollgeerage yeah... I know what you mean... That 70's vibe 😂
My favorite Lynyrd Skynyrd song! Love the harmonies. God bless Ronnie, Steve, Cassie, and Dean and all of those that have departed since then.
And Gary!!
RIP GARY ROSSINGTON. 🎸🦅✝️🙏💕🕊️
ALL very talented and special !
Love the way Steve Gaines falls back and disappears behind the drum set at the end 😎
Another thing I love about allen is until he has a solo coming up he kinda keeps to himself and let's the others have their thunder... shows how much respect they gave each other
literally sounds like the recorded version... so much talent.. im amazed. rip.
Man those were the days.....I remember I could just bring my Polaroid camera and snap pictures at concerts. Special place and times
Excellent song. Love the guitar. Steve Gaines played it perfectly. The backup singers were great. Nice lead guitar by both guitarists. This is a classic recording. No bands these days who can touch these older classic bands.
I'm sorry, but Gary Rossilington is not the greatest guitar player, even in Skynyrd, gains is got him beat
By far the greatest Southern Rock band ever! So much talent!!!!
Daisy Mouri DA-DB- blow all these guys off the fucking stage. Best one-day punch in rock history!
You are right they are greatest southern rock band of all times!
Put down the crackpipe.
Best line-up right here. Amazing chemistry between everyone. Steve Gaines clicked with the band, complementing Allen. Gary is always great. Ronnie in top form, Leon A+ backing vocals, the smokin' Honkettes, Artimus, Billy...legendary.
Not exactly a tribute band.
"The surviving band members re-formed in 1987 for a reunion tour with lead vocalist Johnny Van Zant, the younger brother of lead singer and founder Ronnie Van Zant. Lynyrd Skynyrd continues to tour and record with co-founder Gary Rossington, Johnny Van Zant, and guitarist Rickey Medlocke who wrote and recorded with the band from 1971 to 1972 before returning in 1996. Fellow founding member Larry Junstrom along with '70s members Ed King and Artimus Pyle remain active in music but no longer tour or record with the band. Drummer Michael Cartellone has recorded and toured with the band as its core drummer since 1999. Lynyrd Skynyrd was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 13, 2006"
This is pulled from their Wiki page.
Medlocke is a scab. He's a great player, I'll give him that, but he acts like he was "there from the beginning" which is bullshit. He was there for a minute, as a fill-in drummer, nothing more. Thinks he's Allen, haha. Not by a long shot.
REALLY...This cut is sooo tight...Coulda been studio recording...
I agree. They just friggin hit it perfect. But then again they are THE SHIT!
Appliance Paul I've been saying that for, better, than 40 years!!
Goodbye Gary. Thanks for the memories. R.I.P.
Steve Gaines was one of the sharpest guitarists ever. He had so much potential, it's unreal. But all of them were incredible musicians, Allen Collins, Gary Rossington, Ed Gaines. Skynyrd was one of the best and their classics will always be here for us
Who's Ed Gaines?? U mean Ed King who was far better than steve
Absolutely, a PURE GEM - R.I.P., Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines and Cassie Gaines, R.I.P. You may all be gone, but most definitely NEVER forgotten !!
i agree they will allways be remember god bless you all r.i.p
M
Legends never die. they are all legends. they live in rock n roll hall of fame
We all miss them
I saw them in the summer of 74 opening for the Eagles in Evansville Indiana.
I had tickets to see them at the same location three years later.
The plane crash was three days before that concert.
God bless Johnny and Gary for keeping the music alive.
Ben in Reseda
Only once in a lifetime will you have a band like this that leaves a Mark on the world forever!!!
✨
R.I.P Gary rossington you will truly be missed!! I will forever cherish and admire and never forget your 🎸 work! You are now with your brothers for all eternity! 😭💔
The greatest rock band ever in my eyes!
1:07 Steve Gaines solo is Amazing...still Fresh
He was a real guitarist
Still sad we lost such a great talent. An amazing guitarist who just found a national platform for all to see, then just gone overnight.
Ronnie thought Gaines was the most talented of any of them.
@@cnking27 He was right. It takes some detective work to figure out, (if just listening to albums, to figure out which parts he played, with 2 other guitarists playing as well)! He was an amazing guitarist! I would trust Ronnie!!
Just think about how Damn good these guys are and then think about how YOUNG they were when the crash happened. They were so far ahead of their peers. Nobody could touch them.
I was 14 waiting to see LS at LSU in Baton Rouge not knowing the meaning of this song. As I aged I realized how deep and soulful this gem of a song was. I STILL love this song. THANK YOU LYNYRD SKYNYRD FOR LEAVING BEHIND GREAT TIMELESS SONGS.
That keyboard player has pure soul pouring out of him.
My favorite line up right here...How bout those three (3) dueling lead guitars, each taking turns. Just masterful!
Me too. They are legends one and all.
This is their masterpiece, their farewell (without knowing), and extraordinary performances from all involved -- from the writing to the seamless, inspired weaving of three lead guitars. Emotional, prophetic -- it's all here. Damn.
Yeah.❤
just wow, skynyrd had the best guitar trio in rock, steve, Allen and gary worked so well together backed up by Leon's fantastic bass playing, they were head and shoulders above today's bands.
OCT 20 1977 The Day The real SKYNYRD DIED. R.I.P But there Music lives Forever. BEST LIVE BAND EVER !
It's not the real skynyrd now without Ronnie van zant
@@cricketking8450 never will be ever
like Paul H. Said 😢 tbh I listen to these guys everyday I was born in 79 but still enjoyed these guys while my dad had his bigg ass parties
Best band ever.
2:00 Don't you love the fact that the Piano is not drowned out in this piece of raw video?
Billy Powell one of the best keyboard players ever - you never hear much about him though.
Yes I do
Thanks
YES
Great sound man
