UPDATE on the cardstock; Accent Opaque is available in the 100lb weight (my favorite) in the 11x17 size. Grab it here before it sells out: amzn.to/3VDmGWK
I would just liquid glue two pieces together for the one you brought that's flimsy and not correct weight.why not use it when you could use it for die cutting or as a background , you can stamp it, ink it, heaps of uses.
I saw a quote on Pinterest that says something like “why should I buy an item for $5.00 when I can make it for $82.00 in craft supplies?” To me, that says it all.
The artists on our team are always ready to take up the challenge of finding alternatives to fit your budget, and we love the message here: when you're an artist or crafter, it seems like everything is an art supply if you set your mind to it!
For the Hammermill paper, it is probably Index type rather than Cover type card. You won't get the wrong weight if you use the GSM (grams per square meter) weight for card rather than the lb. rating. 110 lb index card is about 199 GSM. 110 lb cover card is about 298 GSM. The card stock package doesn't always say whether it is cover or index, but you can tell from the difference in the GSM.
I also got a ream of index Neena went by the description and it was index. If I cannot get the opaque bright white I use Recollections from Michaels. Not so cheap without a coupon but it works in a pinch
The Hammermill does come in 110 GSM. Agree wholeheartedly with double (even triple) checking...I've been stung twice before learning the cover/index scam lol. The Hammermill is also really bright white and a lot cheaper than Neenah.
For my pressure tool - I upcycled a Yankee Candle topper, gluing a round, cut-out piece of cardboard and piece of felt to the lid. Slides across the Misti nicely and I was able to use what I had. Hugs from Maine!
The original pressure tool, "Chucky Tool," was homemade for Gina K by her friend Chuck in order to make stamping with arthritis less painful. People have been creatively making them since. Old air hockey pucks and felt are also great.
I love this type of video. I spend quite a bit every month on craft supplies, stamps, dies and more. It’s great when we can find the other items we use for crafting at lower prices.
Instead of a funnel to fill you little glue bottles, use a plastic syringe (no needle), this eliminates those gluey air bubbles and when done, I rinse well and put through the dishwasher. No mess and easy.
@@kkrolf2782 I purchased large syringes in the Halloween food supplies (alcoholic shooter size). Tooth whitening paste for trays also comes in a syringe. The cat's medicine came in a syringe. I collect & wash the ones I come across. I find them all the time.
Also, if you put lol ght pressure by squeezing the bottle as you fill with glue and release slowly, you won't get the big air bubble. Because by squeezing you push the air out before the glue, slowly lessen pressure while still filling. Hope that makes sense.
Hi Mary! You have nice tips here, and after watching it, I have a great tip for you. It's one I've used for many years. To keep the tops of glue bottles from sticking, I have used a thin layer of Vaseline around the rim. I also use it for paint bottles, spray cans, and glitter paste jars. It works for any product where the lid could get stuck on. I've even used it for honey and maple syrup. Give it a try, and you'll never have a problem with stuck on lids again.
There’s nothing worse than seeing a video that deals with something you are interested in, only to have the host spend 15 minutes telling you what he/she is going to demonstrate.
Hey Mary, you're super. I've been using Dollartree non-slip shelf liner, cut in squares to keep ink pads from moving. Also DT silicone flat potholder for everything from a hot glue mat, jar opener, etc. 😉
Hey Mary, I just thought of something that my husband picked up for me yesterday at Harbor Freight. He gets me a 12 pack of the 12x12 micro fiber clothes for $4.48...YES, $4.48. WAYYYY cheaper than getting them on Amazon. I use them for cleaning my stamps and for cleaning up after I do blending, watercoloring, cleaning my brushes. The only time I don't use them is when I use glitter paste because it really makes the clothes HARD. (I use paper toweling for that kind of clean up). Thought I'd let other crafters know about this bargain. Be well -
Now if someone could just come up with a hack for our olfactory receptors so we can actually spend time shopping in H.F., I’d be there in a heartbeat!! (Those ancient “doctors’ masks” that looked like vultures’ heads comes to mind!! 🤣 🫣 🤭 )
@@tamarie1189 I've gotten two of those magnet bowls from HF; I have one in my craft room and I have a second in our camper so I don't have to keep taking it back and forth. But I will have to get my husband to take some pictures for me the next time he goes....there may be other things that I could get from there that would be useful. (I'm handicap so going to stores isn't very easy).
Harbor freight has great crafty goodies. I use a magnetized bowl for when I work with dies. I have boxes that are normally for screws and nail to house my die cuts and sentiments. They have rolling carts too, but they look more utilitarian than ones you get at Michaels. Magnetic sheets for dies, just a whole host of items. I even carry my die cutting machine to crops in a Harbor Freight bag.
Hola, been using the silicone mats for years with my embossing and holding stuff still. You can also purchase a "silicone soldering" mat, great for a larger area and hold paper still on it's smooth surface. Mine cost $8 at the hardware store. Just had an extra hack if you need it that I have also been doing for years. If you have a need for the "kevlar craft" mats that are as thin as paper and roll up. They are around $17-$18 for a size just over a standard sheet of 8.5"x 11" paper. I bought the exact same product in the form of an "oven liner". It is about the same price from Bed, Bath and Beyond, maybe a little less with a coupon, but it is 3 times the size. I used these when crafting away from my desk. Like out on my patio or sunroom table. Lastly, (sp?) I took a glass paperweight that fit easily in my hand and glued a piece of felt to the bottom and it not only decorates my desk, holds my papers down, but is the perfect item to slide on my stamping platform to "press" my stamps down. I barely need to press as it it heavy all on its own.
Clever uses of your paperweight! Also quite handy, I imagine, if you need to add pressure to a paper craft “glue joint”! (J. McG. uses her cell phone, but I’d end up loosing the thing under the scraps and pieces of card stock I’d be using for the next step!!)
For your precision glue tip...I didn't like the long connector dangling and dragging through the glue. I saw a suggestion to put a rubber band around the bottle and tuck the cap under when it's open. SOLVED!
If you’re talking about the W H I T E or CREAM Recollections brand they carry, I’m surprised you’ve found that to your liking. I, too, have it - and u s e it! - but I wouldn’t recommend it, as, even the same-labeled paper packs on the shelf in one day can vary GREATLY in color! And getting “matching” envelopes is another crap shoot!!
@@kkrolf2782 I’m not sure if it’s the recollections brand. It’s very thick and nice quality. JoAnn also has a 110lb cardstock that is very nice for bases.
Be careful putting silicone top on the precision bottles. I did it quickly one day and put the metal nozzel straight through the silicone. They are awesome for alcohol inks, especially metallic ones. Add a stainless steel ball bearing to help shake it up. Thanks for all the ideas 💕
Hi there, for those of us in Australia I have found these Silicone mats in KMART. Dimensions are 17.8 cm diameter x 0.27 cm thickness and there is a few colours available. They are listed as Silicone pot holders and they are selling for $1.75 each :) I also saw large silicon mats in their clearance stock for $5 (they were $9). Dimensions of mat are 60cm x 40cm. Hope this helps
Picked up some blending brush holders at Dollorama in Canada for $3 each and couldn’t tell them apart from the one purchased at a craft store for $14. Thanks for your tips.
My favorite alternate $ saver is a small funnel you can use to fill your precision-tip glue bottles. At Dollar Tree they have cake decorating bags/tubes. I just cut off the bag and have a perfect small plastic funnel for glue, paints, inks, etc. It is just as useful as the $20-for-3 sizes of stainless steel funnels. Thank you for another great video. ☺️
The Dollar Tree in Canada has the small funnels. Also, Dollarama has the storage caddy for I believe $4. They don’t however have them in white, which I prefer.
Probably NOT at the $🌳, but I T H I N K some of the frosting bags are noted as silicone-lined. THAT should save on wastage, but I’m sure would cost more … MUCH more than a sandwich bag!
If you don't have a Hobby Lobby nearby, or just don't like to shop there, Michael's Recollections 110 lb. cardstock is the same 300 gsm as the HL extra heavyweight. I use it primarily for card bases. I haven't tried it for coloring, ink blending, etc. But for card bases it works great!
@@andrealavigne7824 the recollections isn’t quite as white but as long as you use the same paper for your entire project you would never know. I have to hold the recollections up to my Nina cardstock to know which is which
I didn't realize that Amazon sold the Makeup Brush holders for such a reasonable price! Thank you! Also, I have been using the small bottles for several years now. One tip I have for those is that if they do ever get clogged, instead of pushing my stainless steel pin into the clog to unclog it (risking that it will get stuck and require pliers to pull it out), if I instead pump the pin in and out to loosen it gradually, the pin doesn't get stuck in the tip. Either that, or I soak the top in warm water to soften the clog. It doesn't clog with the cap on, but if I leave it too long on the table without using it, it does sometime clog. I use Art Glitter glue now, although I have heard good things about Barely Art glue.
@@mpbailey18 I love the Bearly Art glue also and picked up a lifetime supply of silicone "Blunt Needle Covers" to cap my needlenose glue bottles. They come in different sizes and quantities from Amazon and the 18/20 Guage ones fit nicely. I have a tiny dish that I use to hold sequence when using them, and I trained myself to always put the glue cap in that dish when using the glue. The silicon caps I have are black and I've "lost" them a zillion times on my black glass mat!
Loved this so, so much! Especially the marker storage solution! I live/craft in a vehicle, so money, storage and keeping things trapped in place are top priorities! This hit all the sweet spots! Thank you mucho, Mary!
Add a rubber band around the bottom of your mini glue bottle so you can tuck the silicone cap under the rubber band while you are dispensing glue. That keeps it from bobbing around in your way.
I also fell for the silicone Brush Storage but couldn't justify the cost. then one day I was at WalMart in the makeup area & hanging on an endcap was a package with one of them & the silicone pad too for, I think $5.00. I use the pad for washing the brushes. Looks & works the same. I love, love, love it.
Someday I’ll get better at waiting for new stuff to be out for awhile before rushing to purchase. I paid about $15 for one of those tool caddies at a quilt show. Now they’re less than $5? Live and don’t learn, that’s me.
Loved your review. Glad someone is out there looking after us because we love to spend money on gadgets. Love the silicone mats. My husband made me a pressure tool for stamping and he used the felt that you put on the base of furniture to make it slide. It's great.
For the glue bottles with thin nozzles you also get others un the cake decorating isle, ive been using these for glue for a long time, wood glue, fast drying glue etc. And it doesnt dry as long as you keep it covered when not used. And store them upside down!
Oh man, I love the flexible tool holder that you found! I think I paid full price but I love it! I have a million or so watercolor brushes and they are finally organized in that!! Thank you! For this tutorial!!
I agree with @Nancy Backes that you probably didn't get the cover paper. It's much thicker than other cardstock regardless of the weight. I use Neenah Solar 110 lb. for cardbases but when I want to hot foil, ink blend, or do something that requires super smooth cardstock I use the Hammermill cover. It's the one with the large chameleons on it (not gecko) described as "Hammermill, 122549, Premium Color Copy Cover, 100 Bright, 60lb, 8.5 x 11, 250/Pack, Sold As 1 Pack." As I usually only use 1/4 of each sheet at a time or less, it has lasted me a long time.
I get my white card stock from a local print shop. It's a 12 x 18 sheet, great weight, what ever I want and I can touch it before I buy. I do have to cut my own 8 1/2 x 11 sheets, not such a bad job and there are lots of strips left over for sentiments etc. The paper is a great price. Thanks for the hints.
Mary, simply put-you’re the best! Thanks for the shout out! ♥️ And thanks for the paper recommendation! When I run out, I’ll put that on my list! Crafty hugs! ♥️🥰
@@marypolancodesigns oh my goodness! I’m such a dork! I had mute on because my hubby is watching a movie. I should have turned on the subtitles earlier. Note to self-don’t order that paper! 🤣♥️
Kathya or Mary, could you link to the video with the tip about adding shimmer to Glossy Accents? I took a quick gander at Kathya's channel but it wasn't immediately apparent which video it was. Thanks!
I love her gift box idea for marker storage. I put the florescent light grids in a vintage wine crate and stood the crate up on its side. But I like her idea for storing in a covered box for pencils or markers that don't need to be stored horizontally. 🥰👍
I use 300 GSM watercolour paper for cardmaking. It’s very strong and it’s great for all techniques. I buy mine in A3 size sheets in bulk and cut them to size. I use the offcuts for matting and layering and attaching sentiments.
This was a great video. I love the precision tip bottles. I've been looking for those for ages!! I am still looking for a good Marker holder. Thanks Mary, this was fabulous.
I enjoyed and clicked like on your video. I often use Neenah Index 110, it is a nice and versatile paper. Some paper is too heavy, if the card will have layers. AND I get very frustrated because so many factors determine the quality of paper, and when you find a good one the information might not be on it. I make my own "chuckie" from a wooden stamp block and a felt pad from a furniture moving kit at the $ Tree. I had a LOT of block stamps which I have converted to cling stamps. That means the blocks are free and I can make several pressure tools for #1.25. I often shop at Re-Store and I am going to look for those light diffusers .(at least I think that is what they are. My hint for labeling is to make the label BEFORE you fill the bottle. Once I fill a bottle I am usually eagar to use it and procrastinate until I know longer know what is in what. Thanks again.
Walmart sells the ink brush holder for $4.88 in their area with shampoos & hair products. It was on one of the end caps hanging up in my store. I made a stamp press by going to a thrift store & buying an rubber stamp for 99 cents on a wood base. I took off the stamp & added a felt pad from Dollar Tree & glued on a door knob I had. Works great!
I stumbled upon your blog tonight and I thought I would share a tip of my own. The tool that you bought to hold your blending tools in I got at Walmart in the makeup section for $5.00. It also came with a brush cleaning mat that you could use to hold ink pads in place.
Thank you so much, just saw the first suggestion and had to respond. The silicone mat, well if you love it and have a Hobby Lobby near you, they have them in the Summer Time collections and that is currently 66% off. So the mat that sells for $5.99 is about $2.04, but it is only one and they are square. Look in the kitchen items. Hopefully this helps.
I. S O O O. wish I’d waited!! I bought mine for full price early in the season! ☹️ Has anyone yet tried stamping with one of these to get a honeycomb impression?? I’m not home where I access to my inks.
Hi. Thank you for this great video. I like a heavyweight cardstock of 300gsm, my fave is Portfolio Smooth Pure White, great for card bases, ink blending and a host of other things. I agree about the brush/tool holders, I got one for about five quid on Ali Express, I also got my needle tip glue bottles from there for a couple of pounds as well as some cheap syringes for filling them. Bargain! Another good tip for those who don't have a gem picking tool... Sasha Reade( or is that Reede?) Uses a poking tool with a bit of Blue Tack on the end and Natasha Foote uses a white wax pencil a bit like the ones used in nail salons. I can vouch for both of these ideas! If I think of/ remember any more I'll let you know. Thank you once again for your pearls of wisdom.
When I did a card class, I dipped a bunch of the eraser end of pencils into tacky glue and let it dry so everyone could pick up the small paper pieces that I had punched out for them.. I worked great for that use.! Thank you all so much for sharing your tips! Priceless!!
@@donnacarraway9182 S U P E R !!! I’m finding that lately my fingers are less than cooperative in picking up thin pieces of paper, regardless of the size, so something a little tacky would be a help!!
I have been binge watching all your organization videos and you have the greatest ideas on storage and organizing. I also love how you try to save money in the process. Thank you for sharing and I look forward to your next video
the mat: you can use it on the gelliplate as well to make texture with. Also : I use a silicone mat, a normal one when I want to apply glue with a gluestick onto (thin) paper. The paper will not slide or move while applying the glue. It's actually the silicone itself that is non-slip, used in kitchen drawers for instance for it's non-slip characteristic, or in a car for phone on a dashboard etc.
Last week I was in Hobby Lobby and they had all their Spring items on sale for 60% off. I purchased a square honeycomb silicone pot holder for just a couple dollars. Wish I had gotten 2. I originally bought it to get a good impression of the honeycomb with one of those "craft sponges" you heat up and press into design. I hadn't thought about sitting an ink pad on it. Great idea. Also, I think Hobby Lobby and Michael's Recollection 110 lb cardstock is great. Never had a problem with it.
I second the Michaels heavy weight cardstock. It used to come in only white, cream, & black but recently I noticed a lot more colors. These make really nice card bases. Sadly the days of buy one get one on sale seem to be gone (now their sale is buy one get one 1/2 off (still the best price per sheet)
For my alcohol markers I took an old cd case and put foam core board from dollar tree cut to size and put the foam core in every other slot , put the markers on the little shelves and I love how it turned out! I took some dollar tree shelf liner and stuck it to the outside… it works fantastic and it keeps the markers on their side the way they should be stored and also right at my fingertips
Love your tips and tricks. I made a brush holder with a portion of a shipping box from an order with a piece of pool noodle and I love it lol. I also tried the dollar store paint brush holder however only some craft tools and paint brushes fit in the holes. Still I use it and only $1.25 so a good deal. I love those bottles and will give them a buy, though I don't buy from amazon much. Thank you Mary have a fantastic night
Mary…always glad too see your posts on how to save money on craft products. I have purchased many items recommended by you, you never led me wrong on the products you suggest. Thanks so much, you really do your homework. !!!
I bought those bottles last week! I'm trying a bunch of different glues in each of them to find out which works best for my crafts I like to do :) Thanks for all the awesome tips! I think I've seen the marker/light fixture thing on Lindsay the frugal crafter, but it's always good to be reminded of things I forgot about!!!
At the moment (11/ 3 /22), Tuesday Morning is starting to get back into stocking craft items. I think they have the item you’ve described; $5.99, if I recall correctly. And I think I’m going to pick one up to deal with my card SCRAPS. At the moment they’re in a wide, color-coded, version of a coupon wallet, but it just isn’t handy enough. I DO like the compactness of the item, but rummaging through each of the divisions becomes problematic. Sadly, I’ll still need some other means to “file” my larger portion of full sheets.
I have tons of cardstock like all of us do but when I want a real sturdy card, I buy the white poster board paper at the dollar tree and although there is some work involved in making card in the size I want, I am very happy with it because I just put colored cardstock over it for a mat and it may not be for everyone, but it's for me! Thanks Mary!
On Amazon I got a 3 pack of 11"x15" silicone mats for $7, just saw the honeycone trivet 4 pack for $11. I use the pressing bottles for machine oil for my sewing machine, all kinds and types of glue, my DIY also hold inks, and so much more. Storing upside down helps to keep them from flogging up.... It's good to do for ALL glue bottles. Thanks for the great video Mary.
Howdy Mary! I love when you put these videos out. I have referred back to other ones that you've done numerous times. It is FABULOUS that you share this type of information with us because, hey, I want to save money where ever I can (as long as the substitution is good quality) HEHE Thanks for all you do for us and for giving us such great content. Thanks for sharing, I use a wooden leg from my old sofa as a pressure tool, works great 👍, also use a trainer sock, for powder bag,put the talc in or cornflour and tie with a band.
Hi, I find many craft supplies at thrift stores. I was surprised at first, but I learned that many folks over purchase and end up not using their supplies. How nice that they donate so I can buy too much, but at a reduced price.
My favorite paper is Georgia Pacific 110 pound card stock, 92 brightness. I use it for a YYI of projects using a huge variety of inks. It works excellent! I have another tip for you with that stamping device. You can use a rolling pin or a large jar from jam or peanut butter or a big mason jar to roll over the surface of the stamping apparatus if you don’t have the hand strength to do what you called the CPR approach. I hope you find this chip helpful. I have shared it with a few people that have things like chronic fatigue and arthritis, and they have found it to be helpful. Warmly, Ronda, the crafty blind girl
@@marypolancodesigns It really is a good solution. I developed it to help a friend of mine who has very little strength and a lot of arthritis in her hands. It worked great for her. But like anything else, the magic isn’t in the tool, the magic is in figuring out what works. For some people it might be that a mason jar is better. But I’m really glad my tip helped
My 110# Hammermill paper is perfect for my card bases, especially with a base layer and topper added. I have no complaints. Maybe I got lucky and just bought the right type of Hammermill, as Nancy's comment below is full of excellent advice. Happy crafting!
I used to store my copics in the lighting grid that I made to fit a box I had but was REALLY glad that I made it so the grid unit could move in and out of the box because quite a few times the caps came off when I was taking them out and had to go into the box to retrieve them. I've since gone to putting them in small square boxes I got at Michael's (by color family)
What kind of square boxes did you find at Michael’s, please?!? (I’ve been scavenging ointment boxes from any and every source I can think of to help divide the thin items in my stash!)
For card stock / I break down and flatten cereal boxes, any kind of product that comes with boxes. I also breakdown cardboard boxes to save in case I can use them. Saves a lot of money.
Get the Hammermill with the Gecco on the front! You will love it. I think the one you got is the index weight. I have both the Hammermill and the Accent. I love both but will probably only buy the Hammermill in the future because it works so well for foiling. I haven’t tested either with alcohol markers because I’m really not into coloring with them, so I can’t say how well either do with the markers.
Okay, so apparently they have changed their packaging. I had to find my previous Amazon order. Look for the one that has 271 gsm along with the 100 lb paper. The gecco is smaller now and the one with a big gecco is only 60 lb. Here’s the description: Hammermill Cardstock, Premium Color Copy, 100 lb, 8.5x11 - 1 Pack (250 Sheets) - 100 Bright, Made in the USA Card Stock, 120024R, White
@@marypolancodesigns you are most welcome. I just wanted to thank you again for your kindness a few months back with my son who was planning to join the USAF. OH NOOOO on the Accent😭. . Hi Mary. If there is a 99 cent store (I know they are in California), had the silicone mats in round and square shape. They carry them , I think its 1.29 now.
Hammermill is a good paper but you need to get the correct one, I have been using Premium Color Copy Cover , paper for color, 100 lb, like $20 for 250 sheets, the one that has the colorful chameleon
For the pressure tool I’ve used the eraser also... and made a couple with large candle jar lids and furniture felt movers. Added glitter inside before gluing and WAHLA! Done and done! I also found the silicone tool holder at Walmart for cheap! Great great tips! 🙋♀️💕🌴
@@MsShanarun I did! I did the same technique you use on ornaments. Poured floor polish inside the kid and coated it. Then let it drip out inside a cup. Once drained I poured skitter inside and made sure it was covered… then used E6000 glue to glue it on the felt pad. For a friend I glued gems around the outside of the lid. Cute and useful!! 🥰
@@terriconrad4612 What a HOOT!! All these “mashing tools” sound like such fun accessories!! Thankfully I don’t yet need the extra pressure they’d provide, as I have to set up my crafting on the kitchen peninsula and tear down before supper prep time. One more item, however pretty, however functional - if not imperatively needed - just won’t work at this time.
Just discovered you! I am ALWAYS on the lookout for ways to cut costs in my craft room, and you are right up my alley! I have used foam core board and hot glue to make SO many different storage units! (I can share pics if you are interested) I loved the idea of TH glass craft work surface, but thought the price was way too high for my budget. I salvaged a tempered glass shelf from the bottom of my neighbor's refrigerator that had died, covered the backside with Cricut transfer sheet and used a Sharpie to make the 1" lines show up better. Then I purchased the replacement mat from Ranger (I tried butcher paper plastic side up, but that just didn't work - wrong material) WAY cheaper! I had planned to use gridded clear Contact paper, but couldn't find any, so the Cricut transfer sheet was a second and more costly choice, but works well -- you just have to work to make sure you remove the air bubbles. Mine is also way bigger than the one from TH.
Oh no, it looks like you got index cardstock instead of cover! Hammermill doesn't mark "index" on their index cardstock but they do mark "cover" on their cover cardstock. I recommend trying the cover cardstock instead, which is available in a few weights on Amazon. Although Accent Opaque is my favorite cardstock, Recollections 110 lb (a Michael's brand) is a super close runner-up for me. Slightly more cream-colored, but gives finer stamping than Nina Solar White. Plus it's often on sale.
I use wood shims from Home Depot for lots of crafts, my favorite is trees, gluing 2 or 3 together to make a grouping. I keep tins washed out an in a box. You’d be surprised what you can make with them. Plastic bottles I rinse out and keep for future crafts. Lots of folding produce containers work for storing things too! Most of my storage is in clear plastic tubs or shoeboxes. What isn’t obvious I label.
Thank you for these great ideas! If the little silicone glue topper drives you crazy, you can put a rubber band around the bottom of the bottle and tuck it inside while you work. I had been using a pin, now I'm going to see if it'll stay unclogged without. Also, for an alternative to the dry eraser, I had an old hand held sander. It's quite heavy and I just glued felt on it where the sand paper would go!
Mary, I just stumbled upon your RUclips video and just fell in love with all the tips that you have to offer. I also subscribe to your channel and your email info as well.
Fill the toe of an old pair of panty hose tie it off with some yarn, or string. I wrapped mine in a piece of cotton. Walla 8nstwnt static remover that will last foe eons.
Thanks for all the great finds & tips, Mary! I wish items like these were easily available at other places besides Amazon, though. I try to shop from them as little as possible, because of the unethical ways they tend to treat their workers & their (often illegal) union-busting techniques. Don't believe their self-serving commercials. Anyway, I have heard the rationale that craft companies first introduced these types of things (blending brushes, tool stands, etc.) to crafters, so we should support them for that. Frankly, I would rather craft companies make unique products (e.g. stamps, dies, stencils, etc.), rather than just rebrand & mark up the price of common tools/gadgets. Kind of makes my Scottish blood squirm, if blood can squirm. LOL I would much rather support companies that come up with original ideas/items. Just my two-cents' worth. At any rate, thank you again. I hope y'all are doing well. Take care, & have an awesome day! :)
Thanks so much! These videos are meant to just get us thinking outside the crafty box; not to just go to Amazon. A lot of the comments are sharing they find this stuff locally at the 5 below or other smaller stores. I hope that helps all of us watching. Thanks again!
@@marypolancodesigns I hope I didn't sound rude. It just seems like Amazon is the be-all-&-end-all for so many people. I like to support creators through affiliate links if I want to buy a certain item, but it seems like so many offer just Amazon links. While I will buy from them if absolutely necessary, they are by no means my go-to. Anyway, if I came off as rude, I do apologize. Thank you again for all you do. Take care, & have an awesome day!
@@andrealavigne7824 I, for one, didn’t take your comments as rude. I, too, agree that the “immediate gratification syndrome” “A” panders to is absolutely far too enticing!! Amazon HAS come a long way from their days of being a book store, but their - AND OTHERS’ !! - insatiable appetite for profits has gone a long way toward killing the middle class!! Some of us are complicit in this, but I DO UNDERSTAND the draw. It’s really too bad that crafting “lending libraries” - or some such - aren’t available to all of us, but most especially those who can’t justify a stamp or die set priced at 2 to 3 times the minimum wage. Sadly, there seems to be a faction of “crafters” that, like the general population, can’t resist a “five finger discount”, so I can understand why there’s not a great rush for crafty folks to share their treasures.
Great tips, Mary. I got one of those storage things (you put the brushes in it) and I got it from Walmart in the hair care aisle. It's for make-up brushes. Couldn't get one from Amazon, because I really don't know what it's called to look it up. My mini bottles from Amazon are always clogging up. Most frustrating!
UPDATE on the cardstock; Accent Opaque is available in the 100lb weight (my favorite) in the 11x17 size. Grab it here before it sells out: amzn.to/3VDmGWK
The 8.5 X 11 is also available. I find that it comes and goes, so if you need it, buy it when you see it.
Oh my goodness I think we all can All relate to that
But I love making my own cards. It's about the process and not the result! Hopefully those tools can be used again and again.

Oh yes, shame it can’t be used for cooking afterwards 😘
@@traceyrichardson9550 Good point, definitely have to label anything that has touched artists' colors!
Thanks Nancy, that's very helpful.🌷🌷
thanks for this comment. Thought I found a good price to share for Neenah 110 pound on Amazon but it is 199gsm. Know I know better!
Thank you.
For my pressure tool - I upcycled a Yankee Candle topper, gluing a round, cut-out piece of cardboard and piece of felt to the lid. Slides across the Misti nicely and I was able to use what I had. Hugs from Maine!
I did that too! Works really well I think!
BOOOM...love this so much! Thank you
The original pressure tool, "Chucky Tool," was homemade for Gina K by her friend Chuck in order to make stamping with arthritis less painful. People have been creatively making them since. Old air hockey pucks and felt are also great.
I use the glass lid from Maccona Coffee.... bonus is you can add pretty stuff inside the lid too
Wow, that is a brilliant idea. Thanks, I'm going to be using that one as I have everything to hand and just need to finish burning my candle.😃
I love this type of video. I spend quite a bit every month on craft supplies, stamps, dies and more. It’s great when we can find the other items we use for crafting at lower prices.
Thanks so much Dina! YAY
Instead of a funnel to fill you little glue bottles, use a plastic syringe (no needle), this eliminates those gluey air bubbles and when done, I rinse well and put through the dishwasher. No mess and easy.
LOVE this thank you so much
Where did you get the syringes, please?? I didn’t think that kind of thing was E V E N available after the “war on drugs” began!!
@@kkrolf2782 I purchased large syringes in the Halloween food supplies (alcoholic shooter size). Tooth whitening paste for trays also comes in a syringe. The cat's medicine came in a syringe. I collect & wash the ones I come across. I find them all the time.
@@brrjohnson8131 WOW!! I had NO IDEA syringes were still SOOO available!! TFS!
Great tip! Thank you so so much
U had me at “not spend a lot of time gabbing “ !! ❤️
Hahaha..I have to give that disclaimer or else you'll never know when the goodness shall start. lol THanks!
Thanks Jean. I never would have thought to use the silicone mat for a hot glue gun!
Amazing! Thank you so much
I've also cut up squares from non slip shelf liner as Tim Holtz suggested it during one of his "lock down" videos! Works beautifully...
Great idea!
Had a stroke and can't use left arm. So this sounds great thank you.
Be well -
And HF has plastic storage boxes for finger sponge daubers & the round sponges. Waaay cheaper than the craft stores.
OK I'm going to Harbor freight today. Thank you so much for this
Now if someone could just come up with a hack for our olfactory receptors so we can actually spend time shopping in H.F., I’d be there in a heartbeat!!
Wow this is such great information thank you so very much for taking the time to share with all of us!
SOLVED!
SUCH A great tip, I saw that! SO GREAT!
I use Michael’s 110lb cardstock for card bases. Inexpensive and great quality !
AMAZING thank you so much!

Those precision tip bottles are FANTASTIC for alcohol inks too. I like to use about a 50/50 mix of the ink and 99% alcohol in them.
WHAT??? That's amazing! WHat a cool tip thank you!
Be careful putting silicone top on the precision bottles. I did it quickly one day and put the metal nozzel straight through the silicone. They are awesome for alcohol inks, especially metallic ones. Add a stainless steel ball bearing to help shake it up. Thanks for all the ideas 💕
Hi, is that 50/50 the ink and regular rubbing alcohol?🤔 Thank you

Hi there, for those of us in Australia I have found these Silicone mats in KMART. Dimensions are 17.8 cm diameter x 0.27 cm thickness and there is a few colours available. They are listed as Silicone pot holders and they are selling for $1.75 each :) I also saw large silicon mats in their clearance stock for $5 (they were $9). Dimensions of mat are 60cm x 40cm. Hope this helps
I so appreciate you taking the time to share this information and tips
Picked up some blending brush holders at Dollorama in Canada for $3 each and couldn’t tell them apart from the one purchased at a craft store for $14. Thanks for your tips.
Thanks for sharing!!
Great tip! I LOVE THIS!
Genius. I’ll have to try that. There probably would be some wastage but not very much.
The Dollar Tree in Canada has the small funnels.
Also, Dollarama has the storage caddy for I believe $4. They don’t however have them in white, which I prefer.
I wonder if cutting the corner off a little ziplock bag would work the same... I'll be trying it out to see.
Probably NOT at the $🌳, but I T H I N K some of the frosting bags are noted as silicone-lined. THAT should save on wastage, but I’m sure would cost more … MUCH more than a sandwich bag!
I bought a pet food silicone mat at Ross for $4.00. It was large and I cut it up. Does a great job holding the ink blocks in place!
Amazing share thank you for this
I like Hobby Lobby's white extra heavyweight cardstock....makes nice card bases! Every couple of weeks, it is on sale for 50% off!
Awesome recommendation thank you so much!
I use the same and are quite happy with it! Just be sure to buy the EXTRA heavy weight, which isn’t always in stock in our local store.

Hi Mary, I’m so happy that I found you. I appreciate you. 🌱💛
I'm so glad you're here; THank you so so much!
I have totally switched to the Bearly Art.
@@mellightbody8212 I am totally in the Bearly Art glue camp too! Bottle and tip are amazing...just always use the pin afterwards!
AMAZING TIPS here thank you so so much Beth!
I have purchased makeup holders for $5 each at $5&Below Store.

Add a rubber band around the bottom of your mini glue bottle so you can tuck the silicone cap under the rubber band while you are dispensing glue. That keeps it from bobbing around in your way.

It's the one with the large chameleons on it (not gecko) described as "Hammermill, 122549, Premium Color Copy Cover, 100 Bright, 60lb, 8.5 x 11, 250/Pack, Sold As 1 Pack." I enjoyed and clicked like on your video.
Awesome tip about the label, I almost forgot. Lol
Walmart sells the ink brush holder for $4.88 in their area with shampoos & hair products. It was on one of the end caps hanging up in my store.

Amazing share; thank you so much!
Howdy Mary! I love when you put these videos out. I have referred back to other ones that you've done numerous times. It is FABULOUS that you share this type of information with us because, hey, I want to save money where ever I can (as long as the substitution is good quality) HEHE Thanks for all you do for us and for giving us such great content. Be well -
You are so welcome! Thank YOU!
Thanks for sharing, I use a wooden leg from my old sofa as a pressure tool, works great 👍, also use a trainer sock, for powder bag,put the talc in or cornflour and tie with a band.
That's a great idea!
I use a “no show baby sock” I found at $🌳 probably 4 years ago?? Don’t know if they still sell them 🤷🏼♀️.
Love these videos! I've been using a dry eraser for years. I think I'll buy those silicone mats & the needle tip bottles! Thank you😁
LOVE Them!
Hi, I find many craft supplies at thrift stores. I was surprised at first, but I learned that many folks over purchase and end up not using their supplies. How nice that they donate so I can buy too much, but at a reduced price.
That's me I fall into that category of overpurchasing and then donating. Haha
Warmly,
Ronda, the crafty blind girl
Oh I love the rolling pin idea! YES that is great! THank you so much!
@@craftyblindgirl9611 You may be blind but you’re not dumb!! Keep your brain well oiled, kid!

My 110# Hammermill paper is perfect for my card bases, especially with a base layer and topper added. I have no complaints. Maybe I got lucky and just bought the right type of Hammermill, as Nancy's comment below is full of excellent advice. Happy crafting!
I got the heavier weight and like it; will show it soon! Thank you so much!
That is a great tip to share thank you so much!
You have so many great ideas! Love them
Get the Hammermill with the Gecco on the front!
Thank you thank yoU!
@@barbborja1910 Is this heavy enough for card bases?
@@sheridanielson3740 Absolutely!
@@marypolancodesigns you are most welcome. I just wanted to thank you again for your kindness a few months back with my son who was planning to join the USAF. He’s currently at basic training in Lackland and was lucky enough to get the job he wanted with fire protection which he will start in August. Thank you Mary. You are an awesome human being!
Thanks for sharing sprinkle with love from Alberta Canada 🇨🇦 ❤️
Oh it's been my pleasure! Thank you
OH NOOOO on the Accent😭. . Hi Mary. If there is a 99 cent store (I know they are in California), had the silicone mats in round and square shape. They carry them , I think its 1.29 now.
I bought the brush holders a few months ago I love them. I have the Ikea pegboards and they fit perfectly in the tray attachment.
OH awesome I didn't even know that! Thank you
I use the thinner card stock for mats and layers also a gd tip I use a Breyer for adding pressure when stamping
Great tips! Thank you!
Hammermill is a good paper but you need to get the correct one, I have been using Premium Color Copy Cover , paper for color, 100 lb, like $20 for 250 sheets, the one that has the colorful chameleon
In the cart, thank you so mucH!
Awesome idea Shelly on the marker storage idea!
Thank you! 😊
Thanks Mary! I saw that silicone brush holder at Five Below in the makeup section for $5.
I'm hearing that from all of you! THAT's amazing. I'll have to get there!
The fine tip bottles: I also use them to add thin lines to projects with acrylics.. doodling etc. Any color white or black.. it works great!
Oh that is so brilliant! YES
For the pressure tool I’ve used the eraser also... and made a couple with large candle jar lids and furniture felt movers. Added glitter inside before gluing and WAHLA! Done and done! I also found the silicone tool holder at Walmart for cheap! Great great tips! 🙋♀️💕🌴
PERFECT thank you so much for this!
Adding glitter???? I love it!!
@Terri Conrad thanks for explaining your process! I was also imagining a "shaker" version.
I have been acrylic painting for a while but watching this makes me want to get back to paper crafts. Loved this.
YAY! Well. you can do it ALL!
Just discovered you! I am ALWAYS on the lookout for ways to cut costs in my craft room, and you are right up my alley! I have used foam core board and hot glue to make SO many different storage units! (I can share pics if you are interested)
I loved the idea of TH glass craft work surface, but thought the price was way too high for my budget.
Brilliant idea!
You are a crafty genius!!! Love this, thank you
I found the gridded transfer paper at Dollar Tree. Will have to use it to make my version of the TH mat. Thanks, didn't think of the tempered glass
@@Prpldy15 : Yes -- the tempered glass is a must!!
I'm in Calgary, Canada. Your idea of using craft foam and hot glue to make storage units sound intriguing. I would love to see some pictures.
Those waffle weave silicone are great to clean makeup brushes and craft brushes. Also good in the kitchen to open jars.
Great idea!! YES!!!
SUCH helpful info thank you so so much!
That's a great idea!
BEEEEE-rilliant hack with the rubber band. So simple yet so unthinkable for me. lol
Oh great! I have one of those!!
Mary, I just stumbled upon your RUclips video and just fell in love with all the tips that you have to offer. I also subscribe to your channel and your email info as well.

First time watching this one. Great info with the comparison of the glossies!
I'm so glad it was useful thank you!
Fill the toe of an old pair of panty hose tie it off with some yarn, or string. I wrapped mine in a piece of cotton. Walla 8nstwnt static remover that will last foe eons.

Thanks Mary, I love your alternative videos!! 🤗
You are so welcome! YAY Thank you for letting me know.
I found the tool holder (5:20) at the 5 and below store for... $5. It id exactly the same item.
YES That's awesome!
Your voice reminds me so much of Lindsay the frugal crafter. Great tips/advice, thanks
Oh I LOVE that compliment; Lindsay is the best! Thank you!
I have rarely bought from Amazon either.
I really liked the comparison of items and their dollar value. Very informative. I hope you'll do more.
Thank you so much Sally! I do have a playlist on my channel about money savings if you want to check that out
Great tips, Mary. I got one of those storage things (you put the brushes in it) and I got it from Walmart in the hair care aisle. It's for make-up brushes. Couldn't get one from Amazon, because I really don't know what it's called to look it up. My mini bottles from Amazon are always clogging up. Most frustrating!
Yes Carol! And I only paid under $5 for mine at Walmart! It was on a clip strip in cosmetics!
My mini bottles clog up, too, so I’m back to putting hat pins in them. Could be that Mary uses hers more often than I use mine.
I used corsage pins but they rusted.
Yes, exactly where I found it.
Thanks so much for this share...amazing!
