Thank you for reaching out to me about this! This topic is really fascinating to me which may seem crazy considering my upbeat super positive content. I think it’s really important to call out shady business and journalism practices. It’s really a shame that things have turned out like this- I really hope entertainment/gaming journalism can improve and writers can be paid what they deserve to be paid. And best of luck on your hunt for Shaymin!! It’ll be entirely worth it once it shines!

I just finished Part 1. The bit about Amazon hiring workers from India to monitor their "cashier free" stores reminded me of how Meta did the same thing by underpaying Kenyan workers who are handling its content moderation. (A company called Sama is outsourced for this work). The workers often see disturbing images for a mere pittance.
Update: Looks like the rest of the video is about that and content mills. Yeah...it's everywhere.
Update 2: Good luck with the move!!!
As you know, global capitalism runs on grossly underpaid and exploited labor.

    • @lancesmith8298

The base underlying problem of AI, a threat far bigger than “mass media becomes unbearably same-y, but at least I have a brainstorming buddy”, and also far smaller than “we’re gonna start running out of lithium by 2030”, is that it’s all founded on the disgustingly named Mechanical Turk, run by Amazon, and the many companies that copied its model.
Learning algorithms need tagged data to function on a fundamental level. Humans should tag data, because an automated system would very quickly mark everything it gets as “data”, because that takes the least computation possible. Models need new tagged data regularly to do a good job, and this problem grows exponentially.
All projects working with tagged data, regardless of context, are working with finely ground blood diamonds, formed from an undocumented large underpaid workforce, who still are receiving so many tasks at once that they have to write their own automation software to make no money.

I know this bit was more of a footnote, but the bit about younger people using tiktok as a search engine being pitted against the idea of searching reddit, that's a really good way to frame it. I absolutely rely on reddit to get answers that i can sorta trust, and thinking about how unreliable the internet has become as reason for why some younger folk aren't good with wider bits of the internet; because the internet isn't good for learning anymore.

I hope Valnet doesn’t try to strike your video like they did to Fireborn. Fireborn made a similar video, interviewing various Valnet employees and exposing the company for exploitative practices. However, Fireborn ended up having to remove the video because it was hit with a copyright strike. It’s quite obvious that Valnet was attempting to silence criticism, given the nature of the strike, so I sincerely hope that your video doesn’t get attacked as well.

This explains why I keep seeing new articles every week about the console release of Stardew Valley's 1.6 update, despite there being no actual news. They front load the post with meaningless fluff or spoilers that I want to avoid and all end with the exact same quote from Eric Barone, which roughly boils down to, it'll be ready when it's ready. I stopped paying them any attention a long time ago, which makes me concerned (no pun intended) that I'll completely overlook the news of when the console update _actually_ releases.

Unless it's the MrBadim situation, he's being hard targeted for criticism.

Then I noticed in the past couple of weeks that Game Rant is uploading at least 1 article a day about "Switch giveaways", which are all talking about the NSO icon pieces that are currently available and changing every few days. This is the first video of yours I've ever seen, and I'm fascinated by how well this video is put together. Your "pulling you in" section does a superb job, and isn't rife with unrelated segues; it's informative and interesting.
The whole body of the video's subject is also excellent, transitioning from a perfect pop culture topic, like Pokemon and creators who love that property, and exposing issues of exploitation in lesser developed countries. The transitions, breaking up of content into chapters, even your brief, but humorous, digressions work toward the end goal of exposing the topic without losing the viewer. Everything works toward a single endpoint to inform the people listening/watching.
You've only got 9k subs now, but you do video essays better than some of the biggest on this platform. Instant sub, from me.

The company's over optimization of the articles definitely explains why so many of them feel like they were writen by AI and feel souless. Respect to the writers for putting out so much content. It honestly hurts knowing that something as horrible as AI isn't even the most unethical AI-related practice. The fact that a lot of companies use underpaid human-labor and pass it off as AI to secure funding only to NOT use that funding to create actual AI systems is downright disgusting and researching this topic has taught me this happens a ton and it's going to keep happening until language models can accomplish what they want to claim to be for free and readily available.

I also finished a Shiny hunt that I've wanted to do since I was a kid. I pulled out my Colosseum Bonus Disc and reset Ruby a whole bunch to get that Shiny Jirachi. Finally got what I'd told myself I'd do for years. I was not, however, actually doing the hunt for years.
Funnily enough, it was on the save that I finally picked May after all these years that I got it. Or uh.... "A" I guess she's called in this save file.
Also funnily enough, it is extremely easy to clone Pokemon in Gen 3. I can clone Jirachi by the Box-full.

Not super related, but just another example of content farming and not actually knowing much about the franchise the article is about: the Damian Wayne article caught my eye during that scroll through. The phrasing of the title and blurb makes it sound as if when/if the current DC movie and show projects under James Gunn introduce a Robin for the first time it would be Damian. That would be a strange choice because Damian may be the current Robin but he’s not exactly the first and jumping straight to him would be a massive leap forward on the timeline. He’s the 4th or 5th (depending on if you count Steph) Robin because Robin is a legacy character/name and the previous Robins have each been first introduced (in comics) as kids, generally around the 8-12 range for their first appearances, and since grown up. The first (Dick/Nightwing) and second (Jason/Red Hood) Robins are both adults now and the 3rd (Tim/Red Robin) was an adult as of the pre-new-52 continuity but is 16 in the new 52 and rebirth continuities. And there was a long time between the end of Jason’s time as Robin and the start of Tim’s. So it’s many many years into the Batfamily’s existence before Damian is even BORN and he doesn’t become Robin until he’s 8 and Tim is the Robin he comes after and already mid teens when it happens. It’s not impossible that the first time we see a Robin in this version of the world it may not be right at the start of the timeline and maybe Dick will already be Nightwing at that point and either Jason will be Robin, Tim will be Robin, or it will be between Robins. But jumping straight to Damian is a MASSIVE skip over soooo much lore and would be incredibly confusing to viewers not as well versed in the source material of the comics. To put that in perspective, imagine playing Legends Arceus and suddenly meeting Nemona and she wasn’t sent back in time, she’s just there. Even more… imagine you don’t know very much about Pokémon except Legends and some basic, mainly Gen 1 related info and have no idea who Nemona is or where she fits into the world or what makes her unique compared to any given character and there’s little to know explanation of any of that. You’d be super confused, especially once she started talking about Geeta or the player character or Arvin or Penny (as Damian would surely end up at least occasionally mentioning the other Robins as well as other characters in general that you’d have even less idea about for the same reasons you’d have no idea about him PLUS the fact they’re only mentioned and you’re not directly watching them like, say, Jon Kent/Superboy or any of his small army of fur babies, especially Alfred the Cat because… if you don’t know who Damian is and then he starts talking about the butler except actually he’s not talking about the utter but a cat he named after him… yeah…).
The phrasing of the title and blurb makes it sound like introducing Robin = introducing Damian which would be incredibly unlikely at this point. Hell, the Young Justice cartoon was based loosely on comics that had Tim as Robin in the team as well as Impulse (a speedster character of similar age, they were younger in those comics so maybe 13 or 14 range) but they knew that going straight to the 3rd Robin and a character introduced so far into the continuity would be a lot for the show and viewers (especially those with less comics knowledge) to handle right away and they also wanted to do a generational thing so the show instead used Dick and Wally (OG Kid Flash, from the same time Dick was Robin and his BFF) in their place. Be strange for Gunn to not handle it similarly. Even in the cases that come to mind that started with a later Robin (the Arkham games and DC Universe Online both using Tim, who was the most recent Robin that also had enough to work with as both originally came out when Damian was brand new and not as developed a character) it’s very different due to their nature of being video games very heavily targeted more towards people already fans of the characters and who know them reasonably well and were more focused on recreating a version of the DCU as it was at the time they first came out. And DCUO especially has an extremely different timeline with its episodes taking place at very different times and in very different orders than in the comics (Dick had JUST become Nightwing when the Judas Contract storyline happened in the comics and I’m not sure Bruce/Batman had even met Jason yet but in DCUO it came out as an episode in a game where Tim was Robin up until that point and the episode made him Red Robin and introduced Damian, neither of these characters having existed when the comic it’s based on came out). Plus the Arkham game series is more contained than a whole shared cinematic universe. So just in general both of those work very differently than anything Gunn would be working on and even those started with Tim and not Damian. I love all of these characters but the premise of that article just doesn’t make sense.

The Pokemon type mistakes happened to me! I livestream making Pokemon foods, and when I posted one to Reddit, GameRant wrote an article, and mentioned some of my other Pokemon foods: "the Reddit user even made a pizza that looked like the Electric/Grass-type Poliwag." 🤷‍♀️
I'm still curious what the deal is with all the articles from the other sites that changed their titles! Are they all owned by Valnet?

Great video as always, and I hope people start directing their hatred of AI towards matters like this instead of just the technology. The reason we have plagiarist generators of word/image slop now is because companies have an interest in generating slop to begin with, and they were already generating slop in other ways before. AI brought these issues to light by how quickly it can generate content, but it's not the source of the problem, it's just its final form.

As usual, it was a very nice video. I was unsuspecting of game journos being part of this 'death of the internet' thing. It's something I'm fairly dismissive with but I see how it's all related now. And yes, support your creators! Which brings to question: do you plan any alternatives to youtube channel membership? I'm not really planning yet but I believe it'd be nice for example to have a ko-fi set up.

I think that those alternatives will have to come later. While I'm super happy that so many people want to help me somehow, as an immigrant, I'm in a situation where my visa doesn't let me receive any money from RUclips, as I can't have any income that is not from my authorised job. Hopefully by next year I can have this figured out, and I can collect the outstanding money from RUclips and look into creating alternatives!

Games journalism is truly a crazy industry to be in. When you're not hated on by the audience, employers will take advantage of you and then claim that we should be and lucky we're able to be in this profession. We're honestly stuck between a rock and a hard place. I honestly envy solo independant creators as I'm so scarred from the industry but also being POC and LGBT doesn't make it easy for me to be "relatable" for the average audience member and that's lead me to networking and getting into journalism from that point of view, only to learn how much of a hell hole it is.

@@cecilily for sure, you’re absolutely right but as a dark skinned person, it’s still hard to break into certain places when you can be judged instantly from a thumbnail or a split second. From experience, I can tell the majority of gaming audiences tend to relate more to people who look like themselves a bit more. The struggle is real but love your videos. Keep fighting the good fight
