How queer friendly are Pokémon Tournaments?

- Did you know that Pokémon VGC events are extremely queer-friendly? It might not appear so if you are watching at home, but queer competitors guarantee - these are safe, welcoming and unapologetically queer spaces. I spoke to only a few competitors who will be battling for the title of World Champion this weekend at #PokemonWorlds 2024, but I'm sure that getting to know them will make you enjoy this celebration of everything Pokémon has to offer even more!

🎵 In this video you heard soundtracks from Pokémon Sun and Moon, and The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker.
Also Diego Ferreira, he thanked his boyfriend after his 2nd live-streamed win I think day 2 ❤
Yes and I went CRAZY for it! There was a livestream here on the channel!
always looking out for my boy wolfe personally
EDIT: god as a nonbinary lesbian person i fucking wish i had the money to attend one of these vgc events. im not like GOOD good, but i like to think im decent at it. i just wanna experience this whole atmosphere and event one day
Based amoonguss fighting for trans rights
I would point to locals personally! You can find out where your local events are on the play Pokémon website! I met some of my best friends in the world at my local events. It’s a good practice run too
@@hefancy6921 maybe... germany is a lil tricky for me but ill check them out, thank you!!!
Its not actually as expensive as you might think. Im not sure about worlds, but i went to the pokemon north american international championships(NAIC) in new orleans (well, i live close so, rlly stoked its coming back to my city next year im just lucky bc nobody ever comes to new orleans lmao) , and my girlfriend and i's tickets were like $30 each for full admission for all three days, which we went to two of.
We spent way more at the damn pokemon center lol. Im trans, (i pass so its not very apparent), we met a bunch of queer cosplayers and attendees and it was very welcoming, the staff were incredible, and tbh on of the best times in my life ever just watching + meeting people. One of the top 3 players was a nonbinary person it was super cool to see. I highly recommend attending any regionals they do as well if they ever come to your area, if not then of course the big expense is travel.
Anyways, thought this might be helpful. Im also of course speaking as just a spectator. Im definitely going to cosplay next year for it. I think you should totally go for it!!
shdbsjdjs also an enby lesbian here, i'm rotting for wolfe too :3
"I'm not sure if you've noticed this but I'm a huge pokemon fan" *Glances at the multiple plushies in the background, no not really I hadn't realized
This was a good idea to put a spotlight on queer competitors. I like most people really only know Wolfe but now I have more people to look out for.
In going along with queerness in eSports, I'm curious how you feel about things like the Overwatch tournament, Calling All Heroes. It is a tournament specifically for women and other marginalized genders only. Competitors in CAH can still compete in the Overwatch Champion Series (the main, big budget championship) though.
LET'S GO QUEER POKÉMON
This means so much to me, I’ve been struggling with my identity as a member of the lgbtq community. Pokémon has been helping me cope, this means so much to me
Awww, im soo glad you feel safe in the pokemon community @EevsterEevee
@@prozierozie5692 :) thank you
Amoonguss says trans rights
I would also add Aurelien Soula to the roster, they are an amazing french player and is also one of the favorites to win the whole tournament!
From watching the matches of both Zee and Aurelien, I noticed that the casters only used ‘they’ - but they use ‘they’ often for gendered competitors too, so I wasn’t sure if either of them were actually non-binary. So cool to hear that they both are!
Scraw is correct. We're all over the place, whether as players, judges, or spectators. I tend to judge Pokémon events and there is not one time I haven't felt safe.
What a great video! I don't usually have time to watch live events, but it's cool to hear that there are a lot of queer competitors at the pokemon VGC!
Thanks so much for the comment and the support! Always very glad!
One of Pokémon's main themes has always been to accept and support the people you meet, no matter who they are. I honestly think that's why the community has been so queer-friendly, and it's great!
Great video!
Thanks a lot for helping out with it!
Hey it’s that one person
it really means a lot to know a creator who's content I've loved for months now would support me as a trans girl.
that stuff genuinely goes a long way. thanks man :">
@@igobyalyx of course! The person who taught me how to play VGC seriously is a trans woman haha
@@igobyalyx of course! One of my best friends in VGC (who taught me everything I needed to get started) is a trans girl!
Amazing video! One thing I will mention is that you don’t have to be a competitor to go to a Pokemon Regional, International, or even Worlds! There are soooo many side events, friendly competition, people to hang out with and just things to do while at a Pokemon event! I will be the biggest advocate and say PLEASE attend an event, especially as someone who isn’t good at competitive battler at all. It’s such an electrifying experience, especially watching the finals of an event!
On a personal note, as a lesbian content creator there hasn’t been any other community that has been accepting of who and my wife are than with the Pokemon community. The Pokemon team themselves have even sent us a gift to celebrate our engagement last year! I love how safe this community is for queer people. If you ever see GlitchxCity and I at a Pokemon event, please feel free to say hi! ❤️
Thanks a lot for leaving a comment, Vee! Hope you have an amazing weekend! ❤️❤️
Great video! Very happy i got to be featured among these amazing people and helped to spread the queer acceptance ❤
This is definitely a fantastic video highlighting the queer Pokemon community! I honestly wasn't aware there were so many players within the VGC Community that were queer.. Now this is inspiring me to attempt to compete (Gay male in his 30s xD)
Im trans and I went to the North American National Championships(NAIC) in New Orleans this year and it was my first pokemon event. It was surprisingly cheaper than i thought it would be, and the people saying the atmosphere is very welcoming and friendly, they are fully correct. I was blown away by the helpfulness and hospitality the staff showed, and met so many queer cosplayers and people, everyone was so friendly and the excited energy was so exhilerating. I am very lucky it came to my city and is coming again next year.
One of the top 3 VGC finishers was a nonbinary person and it rocked to see. Any queer people wanting to play or just get in the crowd watching, go for it!! It was the most lgbt friendly public event (other than lgbt centered community events in my area ofc) that ive ever been to tbh.
(Little Disclaimer: I pass as a man so that may be relevent to an extent but my friends i went with are more openly queer presenting than I, & it was all great vibes)
knowing that wolfey watched your amoongus video makes sense why he didn’t explain the trans rights nickname on his video. your video is the first under wolfey trans rights!
acting like a literal child right now in bed, YESSSS
Now the true question is, which pokemon represents which queer group? Cause Sneasler slays but how much do they truly slay?
i think each group should have their own icons.
for example, the trans community has amoonguss, marill, and sylveon. there isn't one queer pokemon, just like there isn't one type of queer.
I'm biased because it's my favorite Pokémon but can we consider Ho-Oh a queer Pokemon? I mean he creates rainbows where he flies plus I find the idea of being reborn like a phoenix really close to my own queer experience
Literally every genderless pokemon for the nb community but I gotta give a special shout-out to Iron Valiant for mixing femme and masc aesthetics so well!
Minior is a queer icon. Nonbinary, comes in rainbow colors, and a bit shy, but when you break it’s walls down it lets its colors fly (i could say more but I wanted to rhyme)
Iron Valiant became my favourite gen 9 pokémon because it's bigender just like me. I make the rules
This is my first video on the channel but I wanna pop into the comments to say how happy I am that ALL of the comments are so nice!! I expected a lot of "but actually this doesnt matter." The pokemon community rocks.
Honestly, I usually moderate comments like those, but this time it wasn't even necessary. I think I maybe had one comment in total in that vibe, but it is really nice to see :)
Wow thank you so much for sharing this video! While Pokemon is known for its mass appeal, it always seemed to me that the competitive community wasn't super LGBTQ+ friendly. That's just not the trend with e-sports.
Very encouraging to hear these stories. I'll definitely be following more of these players now!
Literally kicking my feet in the air going teehee on the train to work watching this. Man this reminds me of MTG tournaments its just so proudly queer in person. While bad actors absolutely exist, and need to be watched out for, they truely are the minority. 🏳️⚧️
May the transphobes be cursed by a series that "unfortunate" doesn't even begin to describe. May they take an Energy Ball from Jellicent. May their Focus Blasts always miss
I love how competetive pokemon enthusiasts have their own channels to talk about and share their perspective and ideas! I just got into VGC this year but i've already learned so much and met (parasocially ;) so many new competetive players. We're hoping for more amoongus!!
Yes please! I would love to see ongoing queer VGC player interviews on your channel!
I used to hang out with Olivia a lot a few years ago, she’s super sweet. We fell out of touch but I’m glad to see she’s finding success!
What about interviewing the players about their experience as queer people in these events and in the community in general? 😏❤️
Coming from the TCG side of Pokemon, my ultimate goal in life is to be one of the first openly nonbinary people to place Top 10 at Worlds. Pokemon has always been a part of my life, and has been a source of comfort while I was accepting who I am. Seeing the amount of queer competitors in the VGC sphere gives me hope for the TCG.
Now all I have to do is get my name changed legally, get used to playing against others in person, and convince my closest LGS to become an official Play Pokemon location. Wish me luck with that! 😅
I am an autistic trans guy, and Pokémon is my main special interest, it's my DREAM to one day go to a future Worlds as a spectator (I don't play VGC but I know there's always tons of stuff to do at Worlds for spectators as well). Hearing how queer-friendly Pokémon events are makes me so happy, thank you for making this video.
Aurelien Soula is my pick mostly because I see they(another commentor said they are NB so I will go with this) in multiple regional finals and end up as runner up. I kinda get attached and just want to see one win for them.
Representation Matters cecilily: Skraw! 06:12 - Olivia Moledzki 08:00 - Suggy 11:15 - Zee 14:09 - Montana Mott 16:00
We love everything you do here Cecilily!! Thank you for bringing healthy exposure to VCG and all of Pokemon ❤
Pokémon is so queer yet almost not queer at all. Loved this video.
Ive litterally been BEGGING for more (any) queer pokemon content. love ur work, bestie
To be honest I know little about competitive Pokémon and its players, but it's really nice to see that the events are this welcoming.
Anyway, I'm personally hoping for more info on Pokémon TCG Pocket lol.
I’m too scared of failure and too broke to get into VGC in person, but gosh this video makes me wish I could. I would love to attend a queer space in person
based cecilily is back, lets fuckin go
I unintentionally teared up several times during this video :')
What a heartwarming video!! I love the image of a truly welcoming and supportive competitive environment you paint through these interviews. Awesome job!
I fully expected to get bombarded with queerphobic experiences, but it is so beautiful that an esport place that is so dear to so many queer people is actually so welcoming of us. Literally teared up watching this. ❤
OOOOOH I'M SO HAPPY I FOUND THIS VIDEO. I ADORE THAT YOU ACTUALLY INTERVIEWED A LOT OF THESE PLAYERS. Thank you!!! I love learning about players and their experiences
I usually root for the person with the best hat (maybe that’s why I like axe [melee player])
Note can someone explain what happened with pokerouge?
I believe there's another video on this channel covering the pokerogue thing but basically the original lead dev was pretty 'phobic and the current people in charge of the project are much better
Omg Montana’s boyfriend’s message was so cute, he looked so proud 🥹
I did not know this was an actual thriving community, love y'all 😭❤
You're so cool, genuinely :^) found you through the amogus video but you've been so fun and charming I hope your channel gets super big!!!
Thank you so much!!
I was at a regional once and I was surprised that there was quite a bit of queer representation. It was really coolto see.
I haven't watched the full video yet, will keep going later, but if the focus is solely on the VGC players I'd love to see a second part covering the TCG players :)
I wish i was better at competitive Pokemon. I’d say I generally understand how to play, and I know how to teambuild in theory, but when it comes to in practice, I have no idea how to put a team together. Also my inability to use non-shiny Pokemon is definitely a hindrance.
same here lol, when I do play it's with teams someone else made
As someone who has always been loving Esports and competitive gaming and who a few years back lost most of my friends and sense of community when realising I am trans!
I really been feeling like I lost a big part of me when so many circles I used to surround myself in suddenly became scary environments. so I am SO grateful for Pokémon and the competitive community online which has made me feel amazing and I have gone all into the all of the games. I really hope I stabilize my economy so that I can attend some of the Europe events in the 2025 season, but for now I will cozy up in my bed for a few days, and emerge myself in the best of the best in Pokemon competition while now thank to you I now know who to be rooting for!
As a backup plan I will be rooting for whichever trainers bring Amoongus for obvious reasons!
Loving your content
Great video! I haven’t seen a lot of competitive Pokémon, so it’s really cool to learn that there are a lot of queer competitors in the scene!
VGC? more like, VGQueer!
First video of your I'm watching but I'm very happy that the community is as accepting as it should! Glad it's getting some attention. Looks like you have several other interesting videos, so I'll keep looking.
Would love to see some TCG as well!
As a trans women playing vgc ranked since I saw wolfe video about his 2022-2023 season, watching the worlds + your video really motivate me to go to IRL tournaments and try to qualify for the worlds. Thanks for your video ❤
This was so heart warming
never had a communnity as accepting as my vgc friends, love those guys, shoutout to CO VGC
I would really love to see you cover a video on the pokemon TCG for queer players! There's a lot of queer women and it's really nice! As a competitor in the TCG it'd be really cool to see a video about Cyrus Davis and others!
Loved this video! I'm going to be following all these players. I also want to follow the VGC world championship, but I don't know where to stream it, where can I watch?
just happened to come across this vid on my recommended and i def don't regret clicking on it!
I’m SO hyped! Last time I watched worlds was back in 2022. Definitely looking forward to seeing Wolfe and many other major players! One day I hope to attend, and maybe participate. 🙌
I’ve been out of touch from the competitive Pokémon community for some time (sadly I was not yet out as a bi guy at the time of competing), but giving a shoutout to the Hatterene Series that gives a spotlight to women and trans/nb players, and pour one out for Krystalolachu, who is no longer with us.
This video genuinely put a smile on my face
What a great video to come home from work to!
I just discovered your channel due to this video and I LOVED this video ❤️ I’m kinda ready to start my VGC journey now :)
great video! just subscribed. lots of love from brazil
Fellow transfemme here!! You're so passionate about it that you make me want to participate in these :3 But idk if there's something like vgc in Poland. At least i will watch. I didn't plan to, but after watching this video I am really excited for this
Can’t say I’m mad that the USWNT won gold, but did Marta deserve a gold medal in her career? Absolutely. She’s one of the two best players ever (Christine Sinclair will always be the GOAT, imo.)
I would love to see you attending vgc events! They are so fun!
don't mind me, just engaging and hyping to help with the algorithm
Can confirm, you can’t throw an altaria plush at a Pokémon regional without hitting a queer person
My headphones ran out of battery just before I was about to click on your shiny hung stream
Hunt*
Pokémon community is friendly place for queer people, let’s show our support ❤
so excited to finally tune into worlds for the first time ever
I do want to bring up that the natives of the islands are literally begging travelers to stop traveling there
Im new to vgc this year, so this will definitely be my "to cheer for" list lmaoo
I have always wanted to take part in vgc tournaments but alas nintendo is not in south asia :(
What a fantastic video. As you said, this is a topic more important than ever.
im so glad you made this, my heart is warm☺
Two of my fav anime seasons getting dropped in the first second of the video was not what I was expecting but I’ll take the win
Im rooting for Aaron cybertron, his commentary and impact on the competstive scene has made pokemon vgc more than it was before
Always a good day when cecilily uploads!
Personally... I don't really see a connection between queerness and VGC, I mean you just come as you are and you play the game. I think the game is the main focus, and discrimination in general against people's differences should be frowned upon. So.... being queer-friendly or uniqueness in our differences shouldn't be an issue when the game is the main focus.
It's not a direct connection per se. What this video does is to praise Pokémon VGC for being a safe and welcoming place for queer players - something that is unfortunately not the rule in most e-sports spaces.
@@cecilily That is unfortunate if that's the case with other e-sports and just an L for the organization. Glad you were able to enjoy yourself at the Pokemon events
"of course the main event of worlds is the VGC finals", as a TCG player, I would like to challenge this statement 😇
Maybe I will HAVE to do the TCG video up next, right? :P
If only I had a cool, funny, transgender youtuber who could do this research for me and deliver it in a quick and snappy RUclips video. 😂😇
We need a tcg version of this vid
Wait, Skraw is queer?
you’re stunning 💕 ty for making this video, I love queer pokemon content!
Hype for Worlds! Great vid
Love this video & so excited seeing LGBTQIA+ folks represented in this community!! 💕
I love this topic!! Great video :)
Now I want to try VGC😂 representing my country Brazil and Queer people
hell yeah!!!!
Shouldn’t we be boycotting Worlds since native Hawaiians have been telling tourists not to come due to their lack of resources?
Agreed, this should not be hosted in Hawaii!
yeah pokemon has had a history of hosting events there and it's kind of disappointing that they keep doing it
Just asking are you Brazilian?
An quickie but an very good video I can already tell!
You *have* to feature Azalea McTavish at some point. 😊
Noted!
this. this is the good content i sign up for
You're doing God's work, ma'am 🙌
Omg i love the alolan vulpix plush
SKRAW? (POSITIVE)
Espera aí, nós queers estamos no VGC? 😮
I declare myself greatly
Hugely
Really
Totally hyped about watching world with you.
não esperava ver uma bandeira trans brasileira nesse vídeo
THANK YOU FOR THIS
This channel is queeeeeer?! 😂😂 I love that comment
