In Neil's apologie he says "At it's core, you do not have to be educated to not be transphobic, you need to be a decent, understanding human being". I think he understands the problem and is on the right track to beacome a better person. It's not always that you see someone handle this kind of situation so well, wish him the best.
One can hope although more cynically it could just been seen as a way to distance himself from the backlash considering he already said he never wanted to state his opinion 'publicly.' This ongoing paranoia around trans people is really eating at my soul and its hard to stay positive.
@@DarkkestNite I don't really care about consequences. I care that he is genuine and if he doesn't understand trans people at least respects their right to exist.
@@Mr.BrothybearIt’s a pun. “Rights” can mean “legal or moral entitlement” (as in, “You have the right to remain silent”), or it can mean “that which is morally correct” (as in “I did it because it’s the right thing to do”) The “rights” in “Trans rights” uses the first definition, but “wrongs” is an opposite of that second definition. It became a common joke a while back to state “I support women’s rights AND women’s wrongs” when a woman did something illegal but that one felt was justified, or if the woman was hot enough that one didn’t give a damn (usually fictional women), & that meme eventually made its way to the online trans community as well, though used in a slightly different way I find it harder to explain.
@@henriquepacheco7473Of course not. Ferrothorn is always complaining about "OU being too woke" because of the incredible icons they have (Iron Valiant is clearly NB, and I think Ribombee was a lesbian or smth) and we also have the UU power couple, Tyranitar Excadrill (both are girls) and we even have the OG gay couple, Slowbro Eggxecutor Edit: How could I forget the GOAT Heatran (He trans)
for all my brazilian folks who love this flag as much as I do: it's called "Bandeyra Nacional" by artist Fred Costa! You should be able to find it on instagram, buy it online or even in some specialty graphic shops. I bought mine in Belo Horizonte :)
I hope Neil can really grow from this and come back eventually. As someone who knew his content, this was not a side of him he showed in his videos. I also think his apology was genuine. Trans rights are human rights.
I even tried to look some of his content up before the video, but his channel was wiped. I really don't know much about him, but I hope he takes the chance to grow.
I've seen countless people learn, grow, and come to the realization that trans people are just people living their lives. I have hope that Neil can do the same, especially with the response he gave and the fact that he's (apparently) pretty young. I don't know anything about the guy, but the apology seemed genuine to me.
"No investigation, no right to speak." - Mao Zedong Hope he researches into what he's talking about from now, specially when he has no personal experience with the topic.
Pansexual Nonbinary makes sense to me. For clarity, I mean non-binary gender as in not solely male or female (aka not a binary gender), so this could be agender, pangender, genderfluid, etc.
There are other pokemon with Spore. We pick him because of other reasons as well, he's also bulky, can redirect moves, can do heal moves, and is a trans icon
It's true that I've heard of pokemon being very popular among gay and queer spaces. I think there's nothing intriniscally queer about pokemon, and it has more to do with the huge scale of its audience. So many people grew up on pokemon that itd be weird if queer people didn't also fall into the mix. There's also something about the simplicity of catching monsters and being the best trainer that steers it away from any traditionally masculine traits you'd find in your standard sword wielding jrpg that gives it a more universal appeal than most franchises
To that I counter with the anime. Especially Jessie, James and Meowth. But it also included more general themes of acceptance that gave a lot of young queers in the late 90s and early 00s a sense of safety. Of belonging. These children would grow up and create their own spaces within this wide community that might've brought them together on the playground all those years ago. The franchise's relative distance to traditionally masculine traits definitely helps as well. Add first the choice and now non-binary approach together with so many stories told through designs and evolutions and I am inclined to call Pokémon a queer franchise. Not in the way some AAA companies present it, but as a space where you can express yourself. Where you are accepted. And I think that's one of the many reasons why Pokémon has become the top grossing media franchise.
As said above, the anime is very big among queer people, mainly for Team Rocket being ICONIC. But, I think the queer scene of Pokemon might be on the rise. Characters are becoming better, be it visually or personality wise, and character creation is one of the best it has ever been! But yea, it's probably just because how big and fun it is
It should be mentioned that the whole Neil situation actually didn't start off as a result of the transphobic comment he made, but rather people calling him out on his predatory catfishing behavior over the past couple of years. It just happened to end the way it did cuz of that screenshot coming out amongst that situation. The last straw that broke the camel's back, so to speak. In the end, I hope Neil takes this entire situation as the wake up call he needs to better himself as a person going into the future, as the dude is very young and has a lot of room for growth as a person. That said, it's cool how Amoongus went from being a polarizing pokemon to a trans icon seemingly overnight. The world is kinda neat in that way.
Also for those who might not know, Azurill, the baby form of Marill is 100% female, but if I recall correctly marill has an 25% male 75% female ratio. Thus evolving an azurill into a marill has about an 25% chance to make the previously female a male marill. Numbers might be wrong but I am pretty sure it's like that.
@@ginsi936 It's a 75/25 split that changes to 50/50 split in gender meaning that 33% of female born Azurill would change until later generations when this was "fixed". Hence why Marill was mentioned in the original post.
Also, vaguely related but distinctly not trans (probably? I can’t exactly ask the Pokémon itself) may I direct you to our favourite bisexual bird, shiny toucannon,, what an icon! good job on the bird gamefreak it sure is inclusive 1/4096 of the time
It makes sense when you think about it. Like any person who plays Amoonguss competitively, I too have people directing all their rage at the fact that I have a "mushroom"
Straight person here: I think a very diverse community in Pokémon is sweet! I think it’s a great space for all of us because the main focus is fun. No politics, maybe some bullying in battles but like that’s it! It’s safe! It’s kinda scary at times (deathly terrified if the scenarios were real… Incinerate from anything is literally terrifying) yea I just feel there’s a lot to love and tons to learn and share and I think that’s why we love it. And I mean come on even as a straight dude I do find Pichu unbelievably cute as well as many many others! I hope that helps give perspective to your questions , as the algorithm showed your stuff even though I wasn’t subbed, I just clicked because I wanted to know more, and I’m glad I did because you’ve gained a new subscriber and I found more sweet content to binge 😅
I agree, I think this kind of enviornment is very welcoming of people of all genders/sexualities. It is a place where ANYONE, even adult cis-straight men, can say things like "I find Pichu unbelievably cute!" and not worry about being ridiculed over it. We all get to be ourselves unabashedly :3
@@PBthesquirrel Exactly most people in the Pokemon fandom I find are just chill because we all like our weird little animals and we’re all a little weird anyway. I think a big part of it is the idea that all Pokemon are someone’s favorite and that’s ok.
Neil is very young and obviously inexperienced. His quick apology and withdraw from the pokemon community reflects well on his character and future. I have high hopes that he can come back someday with a better mindset and more accepting beliefs. Terrible as his beliefs were, they shouldn’t define his life, and they don’t have to if he puts in the effort to change. Anyway great video
He’s like barely 20 I think. Maybe younger. Again even if I disagree, he certainly was very good at his craft and displayed shocking maturity. Still I do think those ideas were very problematic especially in the diverse community of Pokémon.
I unironically think that the overlap between the pokemon and lgbtq community is due to three main factors: 1. Pokemon allows you to express yourself in a wide variety of ways. I know that personally, being able to choose the girl avatar was a massive moment for my younger self. It allowed me to feel euphoric in a way I wasn’t able to recognize until much later. Choosing an avatar is a good outlet of gender expression for younger queer people who are unaware that those feelings even existed inside themselves. Because of that, I feel like almost every trans pokemon fan I know will have some deep connection to one of the pokemon protagonists they first identified with. Outside of the avatar and later customization options allowing for the expression of gender, pokemon as a whole is largely themed around the idea of choice and expression. You can choose whatever team of your favorite little guys you want. There’s a pokemon for seemingly every vibe or taste a person could have, which lets people naturally find the kind of thing they like through what kind of team they have in each playthrough. Another massive point is that Sylveon single-handedly is an immense powerhouse of trans pride and recognition. The late addition of it to eevees pool of evolutions gives the sense that eevee finally decided what it wanted to be out of so many possible choices. It chose to become a Sylveon, finally finding itself in the process. This thematic background, the queer fitting fairy type, and both transfem and transmasc color representation make Sylveon a juggernaut of trans acceptance. Long before I realized I was trans, Sylveon was my favorite eeveelution, and I even headcanoned that the Sylveon on my team was trans itself (top tier egg behavior). Due to how much projection a pokemon playthrough can allow, it makes perfect sense why it would be so attractive to queer people, who want to be allowed to be their true selves. 2. There’s tons of potential unspecified representation among the many characters throughout the franchise that people can identify with. Everyone knows Wallace and Steven are a gay couple, but a lot of pokemon characters are also great candidates for queer headcanons. Pokemon is an incredibly easy franchise to find a character you can identify with or think is a certain identity. What’s canon and non-canon doesn’t really matter to a lot of the fan base, and I think because pokemon attracts a younger fan base, younger queer people envisioned certain characters as queer due to how little the true identity/sexuality of characters is explored in game. That cute runway model and pilot? Yeah, they’re a lesbian couple. Archie and Maxie? That’s a tragic yaoi situation if I’ve ever seen one. There are really no limits to what you can headcanon the massive cast of characters to be, and that brings a lot of people closer to the franchise, especially if they find out about it when they’re younger. 3. Autism. /srs. If you’ve ever heard that the creator of pokemon is autistic, it turns out that’s never been directly confirmed. However, the formula of pokemon established so early on is almost tailor made to appeal to autistic minds. Vast amounts of creatures to capture and discover, so many ways to play through the same exact game over and over, the mostly consistent style of the series over time, the familiarity mixed with exciting new additions to allow for hyperfixation and passive special interest periods to come in waves, the colorful, lighter, accessible experiences that can be customized to fit your play style, it’s all the perfect mix of traits that make pokemon an autistic paradise. Pokemon allows you to fully live in the world of the games when you play it, providing an escape from a more confusing and overwhelming world around you and giving a familiar sense of comfort every time you return to it. No matter how much changes, there will always be a core concept to pokemon that is consistent. Then, throw in the enticing mysteries of pokemon games, hundreds of thousands of hours of Pokemon content and analysis to find online, 25 years of trivia to consume, and complicated game mechanics to master, and there’s really no wonder why pokemon is as successful as it is. How does this relate to pokemon and queerness? There is a significant overlap of autistic people and queer people. This isn’t meant to imply that all queer people are autistic or vice versa, or that neurotypicals can’t be queer, or anything like that. It just shows that a lot of what appeals to both the autistic and queer communities - freedom of expression, diverse options available, accessibility, and an accepting, passionate community - are very similar. There are other reasons too, like how a lot of the younger fanbase live at an age where they aren’t as impacted by bigoted views, but the vast amount of expression, diverse cast of likable characters, and overlap of the queer and autistic community are all big reasons why queer people are seemingly to drawn to pokemon. I’m NOT gonna proofread this because I typed it all out on my phone so hopefully there aren’t significant fuckups lol. Anyway, trans rights, amoongus is a champion of the masses 🏳️⚧️🍄
Can confirm on the autism thing. My parents gave me Pokémon when I was 6 to help me learn to read. And now I'm here and I don't think they expected it to spiral so wildly out of control.
I've found a lot of poketubers I watch are autistic too, and I think another aspect of the projection thing is the rise of nuzlocke stories. I remember nuzlocke comics being popular and let's plays though now they're usually condensed to a single long video. The choose your own adventure aspect was always there but I feel like the nuzlockes really made it mainstream to share your stories to other people
1. It's like that in most game, like what are you on about 2. Wtf are saying about "everybody knows this or that character are gay" etc... Like is that canon? No its just LGBT+ community declaring it for no reason, just like fans of any franchise chip people for no actual reason, it's really a weird behavior tbh, like why do you feel the need to act like it's not just a "in your head canon" and need it to be validated by anyone or it's bad of them? Like again, wtf ... 3. Again most games are like that, it's not autistic in nature, most people enjoy collecting/completing things, it's satisfying in itself, no need to be autistic (or self diagnosed...) to enjoy those kind of things, it's even kinda bad to basically say "oh that's a game for autistic people" basically saying everybody that like that is kinda autistic and everybody that don't isn't... Well played... 2.2 : queer people of that age don't already think of things that way, at that point/age I can affirm we don't make our sexualities / differences / etc... Our base personalities... We don't think.like that as a child, we just think of it like any other child... Geez (btw people that do that at any age are why we're seen as a bunch of crazy weirdo by most people, thanks for that btw ... Just be yourself instead of a stereotype because of one or two characteristics you have... It's not that complicated)
@@simonmasset2238 people aren't homophobic/transphobic because we're flamboyant or embodying stereotypes, it's because they're bigoted! don't throw our siblings under the bus just because they're expressing themselves in a non traditional way
@@cloudbankcity it's not what I said, re-read my comment and try to understand the meaning of it this time. Besides there is a world of nuance between homophobia and other hate to simply seeing us in a bad light, but every nuance is influenced by the one preceding it, we might have 20 people that don't like us for 1 that truly hate us, if we reduce the number of people that don't like us we generate less people that do hate us actively, as simple as that Not only that but you can be totally open to any person having any sexualities and such while despising people that make it their whole personality, because it's not your personality it's who you are, if you make it so, that you think of yourself as that, that you think of all the other as "not that" you just hate them like you say you shouldn't be, it's profoundly stupid and ironic, if you're the kind of people that see them as "cisgender" instead of considering them like any other people you're just as brain rotted and disgusting as those bigots you claim to be against, just as hateful, and people just gives you back what you throw at them Anybody can express themselves how they want, and the vast majority of people will be totally fine with that, what people don't like (and that goes for any other subjects, racism, etc...) is when you act towards them like they're bad just because they're not like you, period
A year or 2 ago, another grass type pokemon called Ferrothorn got known on reddit for being homophobic..then got beaten down by Tapu Bulu (another grass type), and now amoonguss is promoting trans rights!!! This game will go down in the history books forever!! It makes me really happy how inviting the pokemon community is to everyone. Also you have inspried me to shiny hunt an amoongus and name them Trans Rights!! Love the vid and also you look beautiful! ❤
Can I get context on why Ferrothorn is homophobic? Who's asking? Me a gay man who likes this grass steel type because I just like its design. So I need some serious context. Before I google this.
@NCemloen Yes, of course you may get context! This is referencing a viral pokemon post on r/stunfisk for Stinkpost Sunday, where Slowbro and Exeggutor came out as a gay couple, and Ferrothorn was against it. People were asking how it would affect the OU metagame (popular single battles format). The Tapu Bulu was also the top replay on that thread as well. Of course, this whole thing was a joke, and it's perfectly okay to like Ferrothorn! I hope this makes sense!
I believe that the most fruity Nintendo community is the Splatoon community, as well as having a lot of representation the community itself is very fruity, but after seeing this video I realized that the Pokemon community also seems very inclusive, huge W for all of us
prolly cuz one of the main mascot idol groups is (allegedly) 100% DATING CMON NINTENDO THEY LITERALLY SAID "quality time alone together" INSIDE AN ELEVATOR
The Pikmin community is very welcoming too. And I’m gay and asexual. I feel welcomed by all three of the community’s (even though I haven’t been in the splatoon community in years I’m planning on getting 3 soon) Also penny is canonically lesbian
Wow, that apology truly seemed genuine. Worded really well too. Helps remind me that my standards aren't actually unreasonable, and people are capable of apologies well beyond what I've ever asked for. I've also never liked Amoonguss, but now it just became one of my favorite pokemon!
Funny enough, i watched Wolfey's video on his team first and (because I'm so detached from social media) didn't realize the significance of his joke about hindsight and naming his Amoonguss "Trans Rights". But oh boy, I get it now! Thank you c: 💜
I thought the title meant that Wolfey's Amoonguss changed gender mid fight, honestly if I hadn't clicked I would've just assumed that was the World Champ Difference.
Hi! Really didn't expect to see you here! I'm glad you enjoyed watching it, and I hope you're doing better after everything that went down. Thank you so much for leaving a message!
1. i hated amoonguss too because of its prevalence in VGC, but this has made me see the error of my ways 2. there are so many trans people because the professors asking "are you a boy, or a girl?" cracked a lot of eggs 3. strong subscribe
The fact that a mushroom beats an unnerfed martial arts sun bear is downright beautiful, showing no matter how much that power creep grows - the tride and true always shines bright
a brazilian trans lady explaining pokemon theory and how does it tie back to the trans culture is the highlight of my stressful week. Great video and what a way of finding out my father wolfey just won another regional😭you made my day, greetings from another region of Latinoamérica!
I just wish we could have alternative Amoongus skins, like with Vivillon or Furfrou. Imagine how cool it'd be if you could use a master ball or luxury ball colored amoongus
im a rookie competitive player (rookie as in im nowhere near masterball tier, but i average in superball and ultra ball tier) and watch him a lot! wolfie is just so unbelievably likable in general and hes really good at teaching i personally think! hes my vgc hero! anyway, great video! love from a nonbinary lesbian viewer from germany!
7:23 Neil going Tera stellar here was one of the craziest things he could have done like Chien Pao was going down that turn!! He wasted it!! I’m not even a vgc player but that was the beginning of the end for Neil.
another reason amoongus is considered a trans icon as a result of this match is because about a year ago someone made a post on a competitive pokemon subreddit about how ferrothorn was homophobic, so amoongus was seen as the anti ferrothorn for being a bulky grass type
Great video! Just wanted to pop in and comment about 10:42 where you talk about "any early wakes" occurring ruining the moment. Urshifu actually had 2 consecutive 1 sleep turns which is the minimum turns of sleep for spore and the final close combat should've killed after the turn 1 sleep but amoongus was so bulky it survived and got the final hit!!! Making the moment even more hype and insane : ]
I mean, Wolfey himself made a video explaining how Pokémon competitive isn't about having a "unique team", simply coming up with the best strategy. Of course, once in a while someone breaks away from the mold and succeeds.... But more often than not, they'll just get pummeled to the ground for not using the best mons they could, lol. Also, just cuz they use many of the same mons, doesn't mean they'll be built the same way either. Anyways, yeah, trans rights doe
Yeah, i find it frustrating when people call out VGC for being boring and redundant, when if you look under the surface, there is an incredible amount of customization and flexibility that can be put into even a single Pokémon. Even though meta teams do exist, each individual Pokémon has its own meticulously planned out move sets, EVs, IV’s, and role in relation to all of the other 5 Pokémon in your party. Wolfe’s amounguss that won him Orlando was actually the centerpiece of his team because he chose to take Sludge Bomb over the conventional pollen puff, as well as tweaking its IVs to fit the more offensive play style. The rest of the team was built around it.
The little mushroom was never a favourite of mine but this.... this changed everything. It held out, knowing the entire trans community was counting on it, and it showed the bigots who's boss! Truly beautiful!
My earliest childhood crush was Zoe from Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. She was gender-nonconforming, wearing suits during performances, and having a stereotypical boy’s haircut. She was made to contrast Dawn’s girly aesthetic, but they also became rivals and friends (I shipped it). Not to mention the queer force that is Team Rocket.
My best guess is that I think queer folk are generally drawn to things from their childhoods because they are reminders of times when their lives were more simple, the morality more clear-cut. Most people who are gay or trans in some fashion or other figure it out when they are teens or adults, and have to live more complicated lives as consequence. Some of that is internal psychology, but most of that is having to navigate the dangers bigotry poses. So it becomes therapeutic in a way, remembering the things that helped build the foundation for the people we would become. It's ironic too, cause if anything it seems like bigots are obsessed with being perceived as adults, even as their beliefs emerge from a fundamental immaturity.
hi! i'm a transmasc man who's also aroace, and personally i think pokemon draws in a lot of lgbtq+ folks (including myself) due to the idea of community and friendship with your pokémon. being able to have a support system in creatures who aren't human and having a bond with others feels comforting when a lot of the time fellow humans are the ones to other us. but hey maybe that's just fron my experience being a little lonely growing up, but i still hope it can provide some insight for you and maybe others ❤❤ also, i wanna say your voice is very nice /gen :>
I saw Amoongus being posted in response to the controversy to some PokeRogue Admins being very homophobic and transphobic, so when I saw the video I was interested in learning it. Of course, it is Wolfey. Then for Neil, I'm at least glad he has seemingly been learning from this. Change happens over a long time, but if he learns, then I'd welcome him back into the community. He mentioned he's an immigrant so I imagine he's likely faced some discrimination over his life. You said Pokemon is a community welcoming of LGBTQ+ individuals (I say with my Sylveon plush next to me ;) ) but it is also a celebration of different cultures and backgrounds. The pokemon who take inspiration from each region IRL it is based on, or stories from other cultures. That's always a fun part of each new game, learning the origins of these creatures and sometimes learning something new. We should celebrate what makes people unique. That includes LGBTQ+ and people of different cultural backgrounds. Hate shouldn't be involved in it. Thank you Amoongus for being a new trans icon, congrats Wolfe on a big win, and I hope Neil can grow from this.
I like how you say it could have gone differently with an early wake up or a crit, but Urshifu woke up first turn both times and used a move that always crits. But as everyone fell amoongus still stood.
This story is almost on par with The Little Pachirisu That Could. The underdog with tech options taking on titans that shod be far beyond their pay grade. Pachirisu would also say trans rights tbh
This is such a fun video! Fun story, good vibes and important message in a lighthearted format. You've earned a sub, and I wish you the best of luck in your youtube endeavours!💘
This is honestly awesome, a lighthearted combo of trans rights and competitive Pokémon, both thing I don’t do or am my self, but love to support, because I think they deserve it. Honestly the ending almost made me cry, maybe I am just a little lonely lately. I used to be transphobic, because I was in a conservative bubble and I think it is good for people to learn and look up things for them self, which I started doing after listening a bit to what the other side had to say. Honestly conservative media always felt like repeat what everyone else says and don’t think about things. The moment I listened to a video about Ben Shapiro and why one shouldn’t take him seriously, I took a good amount of distance from politics and slowly started dropping more and more conservative channels. One thing that can be harsh during the move out of the conservative bubble, is that you start to logically recognize, what is wrong, but emotionally it takes time, to get out of it. Good thing is, my girlfriend from the time was liberal, which honestly made me question things even more. Nowadays I am definitely a supporter of trans rights and I am glad I am not afraid anymore, of defending it.
It is very nice to hear about your story and that you are moving to a more positive mindset :) May I ask you just a silly question? If you are not interested in either subjects, do you have any idea why did you get this video recommended?
Pokémon's massive popularity definitely helps with it, but to grow up with it, and feel free enough to not be bound by those "now that you're an aDuLt you must renegade your childhood", in general are more accepting. Most of us were the 'weird kids', be it a gender reason, neurodivergency, or simply rather nerdy interests in general. When you exclude people they tend to band together, and in an era that all children, specially the ones that were left out, had a game/anime to bond over, they grow up not only pokémon fans, but opression-aware people. I tried not to write an essay here, but I needed to engage, I've found this channel randomly now, and...Eu reparei no sotaque, depois na bandeira, e depois minha mente explodiu!
Nossa, eu me assustei quando vi a bandeira do Brasil! Não vejo muitos brasileiros fazendo vídeos sobre esses tópicos por aqui, então fiquei feliz que tem alguém que nem você falando sobre tópicos delicados que nem esse! Espero que você consiga sucesso, você merece :)
Huh? I mean, close combat would take less chunk of Mingus hp. Mongus have double type advantage against shifu, resisting both stab, surging strike would hit for 150 not effective while cc for 120 not effective. It was set the moment the duel happen, it was God's plan to reveal the winner Edit: I get it now, the reason shifu click cc is because of crit fishing. He hope he crit the Mongus so that it will faint
Watching again after Wolfey's new video. I love how respectful both you and Wolf are to Neil despite everything he said. Good sportsmanship is important, and I really do hope he becomes the best version of himself.
i think the reason why a lot of lgbtq+ people like pokemon is because pokemon is at its core a very inclusive brand when it comes to pkm designs. there's essentially a pokemon for EVERYONE. you're into girlypop stuff? there's a bunch of girlypop pokemon for you (shoutout to phaun!!). you're into small cutesy little critters? there's plenty of pokemon that fit into that exact description. you're into big and fierce looking creatures? there's also a bunch of those in pkm. and the same thing could be said about any sort of preferences. so basically no matter your sexual orientation or gender identity, pokemon is kinda always there for everyone and anyone
i hate how people say that VGC is uncreative because everyone uses the same Pokemon. There's a lot of creative things you can do with an identical team, with EV spreads, movesets, natures, items, and IVs. every pokemon has numerous different ways of being used, just some Pokemon are more useful than others
I watched Wolfe's breakdown of this tournament, and heard him say that he should have named the amoongus trans rights (and it made my day tbh) but I didn't know the backstory behind it. Also, didn't Wolfe train his amoongus to be more physically bulky then most? Diversity in vgc right there!
yes he did train his amoongus to be more physically bulky and i thought he did name at least one amoongus trans rights. might have been a video about another tournament though
Loved this video! I also wanted to add, competitive pokémon is so cool because even if the teams look similar (i.e., have the same pokémon) there can still be so much diversity. Items, moves, abilities, natures, and stat spreads can all vary, meaning you have plenty of room for creativity that goes beyond just pokemon selection. It goes so much deeper than it appears and I think that’s awesome. Anyway, i loved your storytelling and can’t wait to see more from this channel 💜
I think a lot of queer people love Pokemon because of Team Rocket. Jessie and James were breaking gender stereotype since the 90s. Other queer coding characters and Pokémon have helped a lot. I know as a trans pokestreamer fit into the queer pokefan
I feel like Neil seems like a good person at heart. His apology felt real and thoughtful in it's wording and his personal culpability. I hope he comes back to pokemon while he grows, and I hope people have it in their hearts to welcome him back once he does. We all have dumb ideas and beliefs, some are just less harmful.
this is gonna sound mean, but im glad bullying people for having bigoted ideas like transphobia works. from the sound of things neil does sound like a good guy, if misguided. and people pointing it out seems to have made him realize how wrong he has been. hope he gets over his bigoted ideas and comes out better and happier for it. maybe even one day come return to pokemon. but we'll see
It's such a shame the situation with Neil. Not only was he an up and coming player his RUclips channel was starting to grow and I personally watched his videos every day. Idk why people have to be so shitty. One of his former friends in the scene was a trans woman. Iirc they worked together on teams and shared rooms for regionals all while he thought such horrible things about her.
I'm glad the guy had enough courage to re-evaluate his comment/opinion. Takes guts, especially when there's so many eyes on ya. I respect that. This is an interesting story, thanks for boiling it down for those of us not involved in competitive Pokemon gaming.
As a queer person, I do think there’s something inherently queer about Pokemon. Something about the diversity of trainers, like you mentioned Grusha, but also Rika, Wallace and Steven, even Red, who isn’t “normal” as he doesn’t speak- and Pokemon, and how many Pokemon like Gardevoir, Sylveon, Incineroar, Primarina, have an appearance that presents as clearly gendered to us and yet can be any gender. There’s also just the fact that there are so many Pokemon with different appeals, some are cute, some are pretty, some are tough and cool, and I think that also just gives the series its general appeal while being very appealing to queer people since there will inevitably be Pokemon that appeals to them. Something also about Pokemon’s message of kindness and believing in oneself and as of the recent games its customization features allowing people to see themselves. I think also the series doesn’t exactly put you in a box, sure, it has the Pokemon League to take on, but you can take it on with almost any team you please, in almost any way you please, and post-game has a little something for everyone: more story, shiny hunting, battling, it implicitly encourages this freedom that fits people who break away from conformity and traditional societal notions.

@@nestrior7733I can assure you that goes beyond 90s and 00s kids.
@@freedom3208 Oh, I do not doubt that for one second. I just like to start at the beginning to show that it has always been there.
As said above, the anime is very big among queer people, mainly for Team Rocket being ICONIC. But, I think the queer scene of Pokemon might be on the rise. Characters are becoming better, be it visually or personality wise, and character creation is one of the best it has ever been! But yea, it's probably just because how big and fun it is
I suppose explains why a lot of my friends are like that
It should be mentioned that the whole Neil situation actually didn't start off as a result of the transphobic comment he made, but rather people calling him out on his predatory catfishing behavior over the past couple of years. It just happened to end the way it did cuz of that screenshot coming out amongst that situation. The last straw that broke the camel's back, so to speak.

I unironically think that the overlap between the pokemon and lgbtq community is due to three main factors:
The choose your own adventure aspect was always there but I feel like the nuzlockes really made it mainstream to share your stories to other people
1. It's like that in most game, like what are you on about
Besides there is a world of nuance between homophobia and other hate to simply seeing us in a bad light, but every nuance is influenced by the one preceding it, we might have 20 people that don't like us for 1 that truly hate us, if we reduce the number of people that don't like us we generate less people that do hate us actively, as simple as that
Not only that but you can be totally open to any person having any sexualities and such while despising people that make it their whole personality, because it's not your personality it's who you are, if you make it so, that you think of yourself as that, that you think of all the other as "not that" you just hate them like you say you shouldn't be, it's profoundly stupid and ironic, if you're the kind of people that see them as "cisgender" instead of considering them like any other people you're just as brain rotted and disgusting as those bigots you claim to be against, just as hateful, and people just gives you back what you throw at them
Anybody can express themselves how they want, and the vast majority of people will be totally fine with that, what people don't like (and that goes for any other subjects, racism, etc...) is when you act towards them like they're bad just because they're not like you, period

Yeah. Plus, you can build teams around unorthodox mons using other popular mons
I instantly respect you for using an image of Underdog. The show lives up to its name and really needs more recognition!
"They will weirdly have a bunch of pokemon plushies around."
*Looks over at my bed* Yes, this checks out.
lmao same!

1:01 Incineroar appears
1:08 Incineroar mentioned
The last group of people I'm going to take mental health advice from is from chronically online gamers, Patel takes more than his fair share of L's.
Pastel takes?
I like how you say it could have gone differently with an early wake up or a crit, but Urshifu woke up first turn both times and used a move that always crits.
But as everyone fell amoongus still stood.
This story is almost on par with The Little Pachirisu That Could. The underdog with tech options taking on titans that shod be far beyond their pay grade.
Pachirisu would also say trans rights tbh
I love this video so much! As a transgender brazilian woman who likes pokemon im so so happy to find you 😊❤ vídeo bom demais!
Obrigada demais meu bem! ✨️
This is such a fun video! Fun story, good vibes and important message in a lighthearted format. You've earned a sub, and I wish you the best of luck in your youtube endeavours!💘
Thanks a lot for the feedback!! It means a lot ✨️
Got this video in my recommended, thanks for a fun watch! Really clean video editing/pacing !
Amoongus went from among us joke to vgc champion to trans icon, it will never die
Amoongus was a top vgc pokemon before among us existed.
It is very nice to hear about your story and that you are moving to a more positive mindset :)
May I ask you just a silly question?
Eu tbm percebi o sotaque imediatamente kkkkkk
The Galar Gym music goes HARD in the match recap section!!!
Nossa, eu me assustei quando vi a bandeira do Brasil! Não vejo muitos brasileiros fazendo vídeos sobre esses tópicos por aqui, então fiquei feliz que tem alguém que nem você falando sobre tópicos delicados que nem esse! Espero que você consiga sucesso, você merece :)
That match was actually so intense. You edited that so well. I was on the edge of my seat.
Huh? I mean, close combat would take less chunk of Mingus hp. Mongus have double type advantage against shifu, resisting both stab, surging strike would hit for 150 not effective while cc for 120 not effective. It was set the moment the duel happen, it was God's plan to reveal the winner
Edit: I get it now, the reason shifu click cc is because of crit fishing. He hope he crit the Mongus so that it will faint
Amoongus, when Urshifu wakes up: "Call an ambulance - but not for me!"
Sorry, but, after 1:25, I need a move called "Hype Noises"
I think there is another video on this channel that might spark your interest ;)
and then there are complains about how it’s not only for boys, made me mad frfr
i hate how people say that VGC is uncreative because everyone uses the same Pokemon. There's a lot of creative things you can do with an identical team, with EV spreads, movesets, natures, items, and IVs. every pokemon has numerous different ways of being used, just some Pokemon are more useful than others
the gender change potion killed me 😭😭
I watched Wolfe's breakdown of this tournament, and heard him say that he should have named the amoongus trans rights (and it made my day tbh) but I didn't know the backstory behind it. Also, didn't Wolfe train his amoongus to be more physically bulky then most? Diversity in vgc right there!
yes he did train his amoongus to be more physically bulky and i thought he did name at least one amoongus trans rights. might have been a video about another tournament though
The Ven diagram between Pokémon fans, and queer people is a circle.
Me and my gf just found a new great channel to watch as t4t Pokémon players lol, great video!! ❤
AAAAH A BANDEIRA DO BRASIL TRANS ALI ATRÁS! AMEIIII ❤
Step aside Sylveon, Amoonguss is the new pokémon trans icon
congrats on growing so much in such little time. watching this match live was crazy knowing the things neil said. high stakes match! go wolfe!
Thank you for this insightful video! I'm glad to see more queer (AND Latino) voices on here! Welcome to RUclips!
the way you told the story was awesome and i'm glad i happened upon the video! stoked for more
i had never heard of amoonguss being an ally, but as a trans woman, im all for it! lovely lil mushroom buddy!!!
I really like how you narrated the fight and explained everything
hope to see more vids from you ^^
When you posted this you had 500 subs? Talk about growth!
i've been accused of buying followers in the smalltubers subreddit, hahaha
@@cecilily It's definitely impressive lol
Amoonguss tanking that close combat had to be the most hype moment in vgc
Im here as a cis male for trans-support ❤
I think a lot of queer people love Pokemon because of Team Rocket. Jessie and James were breaking gender stereotype since the 90s. Other queer coding characters and Pokémon have helped a lot. I know as a trans pokestreamer fit into the queer pokefan
I really thing queer people like pokemon because it's a whole game about collecting cute little animals. Us gays love cute little animals.
When you call that team uncreative my brain screams "but sludge bomb is so unique!!!" Also, happy to feed your algorithm
Underrated channel
I feel like Neil seems like a good person at heart. His apology felt real and thoughtful in it's wording and his personal culpability.
I hope he comes back to pokemon while he grows, and I hope people have it in their hearts to welcome him back once he does.
We all have dumb ideas and beliefs, some are just less harmful.
this is gonna sound mean, but im glad bullying people for having bigoted ideas like transphobia works. from the sound of things neil does sound like a good guy, if misguided. and people pointing it out seems to have made him realize how wrong he has been. hope he gets over his bigoted ideas and comes out better and happier for it. maybe even one day come return to pokemon. but we'll see
I love seeing someone say "500 subs" in their video, scrolling down, and seeing nearly 13k
congrats!
Yeah, Trans liberation 🏳️⚧️✨
Happy Pride everyone🌈
Awesome story telling and interesting concept! I love it here, can't wait to see more of your videos. 🧡
Great video, I’m excited to see more :)
Very cool video! Super happy about the compassionate perspective in this video and how it focused on the positivity from the community coming together ❤️
Wow I've never heard of this!
I did some research and I think there is only one other video on RUclips talking about this story. I thought it was quite interesting, and I wanted to share!
@@cecilily Thank you so much for sharing! What're your favorite Pokemon?
i’ve been out of the loop on pokemon stuff and this was such a fun and cool series of events 😂 i also love this format of storytelling, really excellent video!
Truly the trans rights diff.
