I think the reason that certain pokemon that seem more agressive, harsh, scary or goofy work with girlypop trainers and on girlypop teams is because theres a compelling irony to it. Like a pretty girl with a giant scary dog she named fluffy, or the names of the plastics in Mean Girls (I mean c'mon. Regina, Karen and Gretchen? it's amazing) It's why Cynthia's Garchomp is so iconic; a beautiful Fashionable woman throwing out a beastly agressive pokemon as her ace is so c**ty.
Yes, this is an anime trope of “cute girls with bazooka”. The entire Tink line itself is a reference to this, making it the de facto symbol of Steel girlypop
I feel like these overtly large, scary pokemon such as Agrron or Mamoswine fit so well to accent a girlypop team to the point where they may just be girlypop. They are the fierce protectors of their smaller friends. It radiates camaraderie and companioship.
Not to mention that it gives you that little dangerous flair. It's like "ooh she looks so pretty, but she's got a metagross? Girl has it going" it's the Cynthia factor. Having an intimidating pokemon like a Metagross, Steelix or other big steel type gives you a fierceness that a fairy or water type just can't
She got a fairy type BECAUSE of her serve, and we should all give flowers to her for that. Imagine serving so well you get put within the ranks of Sylveon. Gardevoir had the same happen to her, so it definitely deserves commemoration.
do not forget - mawile used to be pure steel. she has an interesting storyline - it's like she had fairy inside her all along and she was just waiting for it to be brought out. then she gets this fabulous mega evolution to boot. what a glow up!

What you say about India needing a region is SO VALID!! Like, out of the countries/regional areas of the real world, why haven't we gotten something inspired by India with Sri Lanka under it quite literally writing itself as an Elite 4/post game area, Brazil with Rio and the Amazon, Egypt and its landmarks and the Nile, South Africa and a lot of unique animal designs to draw from, Australia and New Zealand??? I don't care about the us and europe as far as region designs anymore, i will literally take something inspired by Antarctica at this point
The two I want most are India or Brazil, I’d also be interested in an African region though. There’s so many unique cultures and so many potential designs
I would love a region based in Venezuela since it has everything in a small package: the Amazon, the Andes snowy mountains, sand dunes, beaches, lakes, waterfalls, long rivers, fields and farms, cities and towns. It's a shame the game designers only seem to develop regions based on the places they vacation in so it's a lot of American and European stuff.

I’m really enjoying these less popular typing videos the most. It’s really allowed us to acknowledge the slay that’s happening with unconventional girlypop typing.
The Steel typing is so fascinating to me because- like steel itself, its very malleable & fluid in what it can serve & present, and this also goes for its specialists & their designs. It has never been afraid to experiment, and I'd argue it's become quite sophisticated. Ofc I HAD to have TInkaton on my main team the MOMENT I learned of her existence and how Amy Rose coded she was - my personal fave detail is how Poppy not only has Tinkaton her team, but Corviknight as well, referencing the BEEF these two have in their Pokedex entries.

I need to speak my truth but Ferrothorn is a MOTHER to me like the Grass/Steel type combination is so interesting because it's two types that are inherently juxtaposed in their design philosophies and references so for Ferrothorn to serve us a design based on burdocks/durians that is both completely organic to represent the Grass type but also elevate it to represent the Steel type by making it seem alien and foreign is so UNIQUE like she's twisted, she'll contradict it and that's why she's Alien Superstar

The game’s company, Hoyoverse, has been called out a lot for appropriating cultural concepts and iconography from minorities worldwide without including characters of color. For example, they will launch a new region inspired by mesoamerican and african cultures, with characters whose backgrounds and names are straight-up borrowed from these traditions. But they don’t reflect any of the diversity in skin tone. Most of the POC characters in Genshin are SUPER light-skinned (with straight hair), and there are only four of them in a selection of 85 playable characters, so yeah...

Sumeru is literally based on India and has three playable "POC" characters from what I remember- Layla, Cyno, and Dehya. All three are still lighter skinned than me, and I am literally white. 2. The three characters mentioned prior are all from Sumeru's desert, in which the NPCs tend to be darker skinned, especially the hostile ones. But the playable ones are paler. 3. There are only two POC characters who are actually darker skinned: Kaeya and Xinyan. Kaeya is often described as being "exotic", which is some weird phrasing that often gets stapled onto dark skinned characters.
Hi, this whole Girlypop thing is new to me, it's not something I'm particularly interested in, but I loved this video as well as the other pokemon tierlist videos. So, new sub. I agree on most of your choices, except for two: Genesect, for me it's totally Girlypop, first, because I keep remembering the little Genesect that appears in the movie and befriends Ash and had that sweet voice in Japanese, that movie managed to make a Genesect look cute, scary and adorable. Also, having a pokémon that can convert, its flying form, which is also seen in the movie, I don't know why but it gives me Barbie's Convertible Vibes. The second one I would also put in the Girlypop category is Zacian, not only because Zacian is always female, she also wears braids, although these look better when she doesn't have the sword. The sword, the crown-shaped helmet, the ribbons, the winged armor piece, I don't know, it reminds me of Saint Seiya, or a warrior princess, like Aurora in the recent version of She-Ra. We love and respect our favourite creators looking after their mental health. Steel your mind. As for the steel typing - So happy to see metagross make girlypop. I can't even tell why or if it deserves to be there but as a mega-girlypop myself, I've always taken a liking to it. ALSO it can use Meteor Mash. Suuuper girlypop. Steelix is another steel type that shares the same ambiguity as metagross. Given that it's Jasmin's ace, I associate it with girlyness but the pokemon itself may not be inherently girlypop.

Hi @phaun I just want you to know I was indeed messy and I know you love it ;) but also I totally agree with the take about diversity in Pokemon. It’s always so subtle which makes it so perfectly normal and inclusive. I remember playing sun and moon and was pleasantly surprised with the number of brown characters and no big deal was made about it and duhhh Hawaii has brown people so heck yeah. Even since gen 1 they’ve never had an issue with playing with gender and sexuality stereotypes and that was also kinda awesome especially considering how gen 1 came out in Y2K but Jessie (rip queen) and James are the queerest straight couple(?) ever.
Jessie and James are somehow MLM/WLW friendship solidarity, T4T, and dating but in a distinctly bi way all at once. No, I cannot explain, but I think most people get it.
Steelix is like--maaaaybe hes a bit of a gymbro, maybe he bulks, maybe he unironically tried mewing for a while, but he's also experimental and likes to try on long shiny dresses and wear necklaces or bracelets with large pearls or quartz. Maybe he's into like exercise science n gym culture for himself but has ideas for a fashion business that's like super glam *and* accessible to all genders. I think that's the story Steelix tells in the concept of girlypop

Beldum line is girly pop for sure. Most of its notable trainers are fabulous af. Riley, Steven, Caitlin, Colress, Jasmine. Maybe the only other one is Molayne but that's debatable.
Beldum is so cute and goofy especially in 3D I love seeing it in Colosseum the animations very much give PERFORMANCE trying their best and getting thrown around like a baton. Beldum doesn't learn special moves until very late it literally uses itself as a blunt instrument until it learns to control its power. I love it to pieces!!!

I absolutely agree with what you said during the Cufant section. Basing Pokémon off tropical animals basically makes the designs for you. They’re all so unique and beautiful.

I haven’t watched the video yet but I’m excited to see Aegislash who is enby in the same way Sylveon is trans, just not given as much attention. Also the Tinkaton line are girlbosses and I think Magearna is very cute. The steel type has a lot of cool things that it can do and I love a lot of the ideas and designs of this type. Not my favorite type design wise but it’s in top 5 probably.

21:37 Gastropods are absolutely amazing little creatures! They are slimy so people might not want to touch them, but that just gives more reason to check out aquatic ones. I keep some as pets and I have watched them for hours as they just go about enjoying algae. And of course, let's not forget that the insides of snail shells are lined with nacre (ie Mother-of-Pearl) so they're an embodiment of inner beauty that leaves an impact even after they're gone. (Also a lot of the freshwater snails common in captivity have precious stripes or freckles on their bodies, they're so fantastic.)

Something about the Aegislash line is that its giving fantasy whimsy vibes which I think works well in the context of girlypop, where as other seemingly similar pokemon like klink and magneton are missing the "whimsy"

steel type's strongest serve is honestly that so many of the shinies match, almost every metal-colored steel type shiny is that same rose gold and its giving luxe

I've always thought Metagross gave something. in one of the anime episodes, there was a Pokemon huntress villain named J and she had a metagross in case anyone needed more evidence as to why Metagrossross is girly pop but since seeing that episode ive always seen metagross fitting into a cyber and chic hovercraft concept within a team

mawille and lucario at first hated eachother but during the mega evolution era they worked it out on the remix and started working together to carry whatever scizor and steelix were doing for the steel type, they realized that work came before personal differences and professionalism should be above everything else and that is what we like to see

I assume Poppy/Tinkaton are direct references to the League character of the same name and build too so that adds to the atmosphere for me

I need to speak my truth but Ferrothorn is a MOTHER to me like the Grass/Steel type combination is so interesting because it's two types that are inherently juxtaposed in their design philosophies and references so for Ferrothorn to serve us a design based on burdocks/durians that is both completely organic to represent the Grass type but also elevate it to represent the Steel type by making it seem alien and foreign is so UNIQUE like she's twisted, she'll contradict it and that's why she's Alien Superstar

This is about Genshin, I think. The game’s company, Hoyoverse, has been called out a lot for appropriating cultural concepts and iconography from minorities worldwide without including characters of color. For example, they will launch a new region inspired by mesoamerican and african cultures, with characters whose backgrounds and names are straight-up borrowed from these traditions. But they don’t reflect any of the diversity in skin tone. Most of the POC characters in Genshin are SUPER light-skinned (with straight hair), and there are only four of them in a selection of 85 playable characters, so yeah...
@@Noodles-yr5ks As someone who used to play Genshin, I'd like to add on a few things.
1. Sumeru is literally based on India and has three playable "POC" characters from what I remember- Layla, Cyno, and Dehya. All three are still lighter skinned than me, and I am literally white.
2. The three characters mentioned prior are all from Sumeru's desert, in which the NPCs tend to be darker skinned, especially the hostile ones. But the playable ones are paler.
3. There are only two POC characters who are actually darker skinned: Kaeya and Xinyan. Kaeya is often described as being "exotic", which is some weird phrasing that often gets stapled onto dark skinned characters.
Hi, this whole Girlypop thing is new to me, it's not something I'm particularly interested in, but I loved this video as well as the other pokemon tierlist videos. So, new sub.
I agree on most of your choices, except for two:
Genesect, for me it's totally Girlypop, first, because I keep remembering the little Genesect that appears in the movie and befriends Ash and had that sweet voice in Japanese, that movie managed to make a Genesect look cute, scary and adorable. Also, having a pokémon that can convert, its flying form, which is also seen in the movie, I don't know why but it gives me Barbie's Convertible Vibes.
The second one I would also put in the Girlypop category is Zacian, not only because Zacian is always female, she also wears braids, although these look better when she doesn't have the sword. The sword, the crown-shaped helmet, the ribbons, the winged armor piece, I don't know, it reminds me of Saint Seiya, or a warrior princess, like Aurora in the recent version of She-Ra.
I hope this newbie was able to make himself understood. Excellent video.

You’re so right about Genesect being a Barbie convertible! There was something oddly cute about it but I didn’t know what it was until you pointed it out- I also agree with you on Zacian having a warrior princess type vibe, though she reminds more of Malenia from Elden Ring because I’m more familiar with Malenia specifically, even if Malenia herself isn’t the most girlypop member of the Elden Ring cast. @@goddangit5290 that's right, I mean, Zacian is always female and is the vanguard of the duo, Zamazenta is male and his role is protect, being a Shield (to Zacian) for me that's girlypop.

As for the steel typing - So happy to see metagross make girlypop. I can't even tell why or if it deserves to be there but as a mega-girlypop myself, I've always taken a liking to it. ALSO it can use Meteor Mash. Suuuper girlypop.
Steelix is another steel type that shares the same ambiguity as metagross. Given that it's Jasmin's ace, I associate it with girlyness but the pokemon itself may not be inherently girlypop.
Love your content soooooo much. Girlypopology is a serve!!! If I had to change ANYTHING I’d put Empoleon higher for the camp factor and for me bisharp would be girlypop given the silhouette !

Hi @phaun I just want you to know I was indeed messy and I know you love it ;) but also I totally agree with the take about diversity in Pokemon. It’s always so subtle which makes it so perfectly normal and inclusive. I remember playing sun and moon and was pleasantly surprised with the number of brown characters and no big deal was made about it and duhhh Hawaii has brown people so heck yeah. Even since gen 1 they’ve never had an issue with playing with gender and sexuality stereotypes and that was also kinda awesome especially considering how gen 1 came out in Y2K but Jessie (rip queen) and James are the queerest straight couple(?) ever.
Jessie and James are somehow MLM/WLW friendship solidarity, T4T, and dating but in a distinctly bi way all at once. No, I cannot explain, but I think most people get it.
Steelix is like--maaaaybe hes a bit of a gymbro, maybe he bulks, maybe he unironically tried mewing for a while, but he's also experimental and likes to try on long shiny dresses and wear necklaces or bracelets with large pearls or quartz. Maybe he's into like exercise science n gym culture for himself but has ideas for a fashion business that's like super glam *and* accessible to all genders. I think that's the story Steelix tells in the concept of girlypop
I am so glad to see some conversation on how unexpectedly girlypop the steel type is, it’s like the cute mixed with that slight little bit of toughness inherent to the type that rlly gives such a nice appeal

Beldum line is girly pop for sure. Most of its notable trainers are fabulous af. Riley, Steven, Caitlin, Colress, Jasmine. Maybe the only other one is Molayne but that's debatable.
Beldum is so cute and goofy especially in 3D I love seeing it in Colosseum the animations very much give PERFORMANCE trying their best and getting thrown around like a baton. Beldum doesn't learn special moves until very late it literally uses itself as a blunt instrument until it learns to control its power. I love it to pieces!!!

I haven’t watched the video yet but I’m excited to see Aegislash who is enby in the same way Sylveon is trans, just not given as much attention. Also the Tinkaton line are girlbosses and I think Magearna is very cute. The steel type has a lot of cool things that it can do and I love a lot of the ideas and designs of this type. Not my favorite type design wise but it’s in top 5 probably.

21:37 Gastropods are absolutely amazing little creatures! They are slimy so people might not want to touch them, but that just gives more reason to check out aquatic ones. I keep some as pets and I have watched them for hours as they just go about enjoying algae. And of course, let's not forget that the insides of snail shells are lined with nacre (ie Mother-of-Pearl) so they're an embodiment of inner beauty that leaves an impact even after they're gone. (Also a lot of the freshwater snails common in captivity have precious stripes or freckles on their bodies, they're so fantastic.)
So glad to see you turn around on the steel type during the video. They quite literally are the jewelled accessory that gives a unique edge to Pokemon designs.

Something about the Aegislash line is that its giving fantasy whimsy vibes which I think works well in the context of girlypop, where as other seemingly similar pokemon like klink and magneton are missing the "whimsy"

I've always thought Metagross gave something. in one of the anime episodes, there was a Pokemon huntress villain named J and she had a metagross in case anyone needed more evidence as to why Metagrossross is girly pop but since seeing that episode ive always seen metagross fitting into a cyber and chic hovercraft concept within a team

Because if you were in a zombie apocalypse you’re definitely getting out of it with metagross. She’s like Fishbone on Jinx (league of legends) she’s gonna get the job done. Maybe not the most aesthetic, but she always has your back.
mawille and lucario at first hated eachother but during the mega evolution era they worked it out on the remix and started working together to carry whatever scizor and steelix were doing for the steel type, they realized that work came before personal differences and professionalism should be above everything else and that is what we like to see
