    You are so right about the "taking it slow" aspect of Gen 2. As a kid I remember sitting in the National Park, my character standing on one of the benches to "sit," and I'd just listen to the music and relax for a bit. Even if it was a drain of batteries and racked up my play time, it was a really good meditative experience that I don't often allow myself to have as an adult when playing games.

    I feel this part about losing my Pokemon to a lost save file. I remember just booting up my Pokemon Emerald cartridge one day, only to be met with a blank canvas stating "new game". All those achievements I made up til the Elite Four-all the Pokemon I caught along the way. Just gone.
    Sure, I booted up a new game, but it didn't feel the same. I remember feeling sad and frustrated and not knowing what went wrong.
    I still have my Emerald cartridge, even though my Gameboy Advance was severely damaged by rainwater due to a flood (I live in the Philippines), so I can't even play it anymore.
    Rest in peace, original Isaac the Blaziken. You were my first Pokemon, and the one to carry me through all the challenges thrown our way. I'll never forget you, buddy.

    As a fellow latin-american, the story about PS2 and piracy allowing you play games was pretty on the spot. I was privileged enough to be able to have the original Pokemon Ruby because my mom wanted to bribe me into learning english, and that little cartdrige is going to the tomb with me, even if I don't have the console to play it anymore.
    Honestly, I haven't followed you for THAT long but seeing a new video from you is a treat. I love the style of your videos, from the aesthetics to the themes and the way you express and present youself. It's indeed one hell of a niche, but I think you're absolutely killing it!
    And if i'm not too late to the party, I think the Pi-blue Ribbon Master idea is what interested me the most! It's a great idea for making the little fella into an even more special Pokemon

    I still remember how heartbroken I was when I turned on my old Pokemon Silver and saw the save file was gone. That's when I learned about the internal battery issue, I didn't even know it was a thing until it was too late. My team was Typhlosion (nearly level 90), Farfetch'd, Quagsire, Umbreon, Lugia, Houndoom, Donphan, and a Pikachu I wanted to evolve into Raichu but couldn't find the Thunder Stone. Gone, but never forgotten.

    after seeing so many american pokemon youtubers who own the game and such, it was such a breath of fresh air to see a video open up with "oh the ps2 was super popular" and even feature those dvd cases that are flat but have games or movies in them (shoutout to JAN movies and games). The story of your dad getting a 2nd hand game copies and such was so relatable, I mostly got counterfeit games that didn't even save so I'd have to start from the first level over and over.
    out of all the games, I only ever physically owned two. a real copy of diamond, and a counterfeit ruby. the pokemon diamond doesn't work anymore, the cartridge was left out in the open and thus it was dirty and now my ds doesn't read it. However,I did the same thing with pokemon battle revolution. I found out I transferred my pokemon all the way to my nintendo wii. Jackpot.
    However, i lost my pokemon ruby cartridge in my house back in grade school alongside my copy of mario kart super circuit (a game I played for hours). that house is still there and I still live in it. This inspired me to go out and find my ruby cartridge so I can do the same. Turning my bedroom upside down for this, hope I find it this time.

      I do have a copy of Battle Revolution as well, but I managed to transfer all my Pokémon I used there - maybe it would be fun to revisit it in the future! Best of luck finding your Ruby copy!

    So happy for you for recovering these saves! I grew up playing Pokémon on emulators only, and with a billion backups and save states of everything (including some in floppy disks!! fun to remember those nowadays), so its always been sad to see people who actually paid for these games and lost the saves as time went by. Understandable given the tech back then, but the fact they still don't allow backups nowadays too sucks a lot.
    Also love your kid nicknames. I learned english back in the day through Pokémon, so a lot of my nicknames for them were just whatever word kinda fit them, like Magnetic or Invisible. I got pretty embarrassed about some of them in my teen years, but nowadays it's mostly fun to remember.

    I loved your story. It has some similarities with mine, I was the only kid on class owning a game boy, my brother bought it at Carrefour using the payment of his first job, and it changed my life forever. I got a little away from Pokemon after Alpha Sapphire, but this year Pokemon Lets Go really got me again and I've playing pokemon again. The oldest I could retrieve was from XY, 2014's pokemons I guess, but I felt as happy as you, I retrieved an Umbreon that was named after my childhood dog, Tobby, that was still alive back then and now I can carry Tobby with me again. I'm forming new memories with new pokemons in 2024, and let's see where it goes from here.

    This video made me cry.
    I didn’t start playing the games till Heartgold, and I also chose Cyndaquil. He was named Blazakeon bc 10 year old me thought it sounded cool. I have so many memories of that playthrough, from Blazakeon evolving into Quilava after defeating the elder in Sprout Tower, to my Poliwrath and Noctowl whose names I can’t remember but I know I loved, to accidentally evolving Blaze the Eevee into Espeon instead of Flareon and discovering a love for that Pokémon that continues to this day (It’s my favourite), to using my friend’s cheat device to hack in loads of Rare Candies to get Blazakeon to level 100 and sweeping the game till I got stuck on Red (I also accidentally killed Ho-Oh in the process). To beating Red after months and making a guide on how to beat him that wouldn’t have worked for anyone other than me because it was specific to my team. And even after Red, I remember still playing Heartgold for hours on end, and doing the events with the gen 3 box legendaries.
    I don’t have that save file anymore. I deleted it to start a new game when I was a teenager, and I really regret it. I can’t get my beloved Pokémon back. I still really miss them, especially Blazakeon. So seeing you get yours back makes me really happy because at least someone doesn’t have to carry that pain like I do.

    I also started with Yellow back in the day! Although English is my only language so I didn't have issues there, but I did get stuck in the player's house on my first day because I didn't think to just walk straight out of the house; I thought I had to stand on the welcome mat and press A. That cart stopped working even before the battery died, sadly.
    Silver was my gen 2 game of choice as well, and like you I also started with Chikorita at first before changing my mind and picking Cyndaquil haha.
    Unfortunately my original save was also cut short, this time because I lent my game to my friend to try it out and he overwrote my save... I had 250 in the dex (no Celebi but someone had traded me an exploit Mew from RBY) and my first ever shiny pokemon: a Poliwirl I found in a pond at Mt. Silver.
    I remember those days fondly. So many schoolyard rumours, seeing pre-release screenshots of Gen 2 in a gaming magazine, guiding my friend through puzzles over the phone, learning the gen 2 cloning glitch from my cousin's friend. I even remember having a dream before gen 3 was announced that those games would have a lot more detailed, lush environments with reflective puddles that rippled when you walked through them, which turned out to really happen 😌

    Lovely video! It was interesting heading you give the background in the beginning because, even though I'm also a Brazilian 90s kid (well, ’89, but close enough) I i had a pretty different experience in some respects. My mom was a teacher at a fancy private school, so alright i got to attend for free, most of my classmates were rich kids. Almost everyone who wanted a Game Boy had one, not to mention other systems they had at home, and piracy was only at the fringes of my radar. I honestly did not know there was such a culture around it! Still, we had some similar experiences too, like becoming Pokémon fans through watching the anime on Eliana, and having to rely on connections going to the US to get games and systems at affordable prices.

    Thanks for sharing your story. I feel so bad because I am able to enjoy the newer Pokémon games while (especially in my country) people are hating me for enjoying it. Yep I'm also not from the US but in Germany Pokémon was as accessible as in the US. Until this day we still have different names for our Pokémon, trainers towns ect. But I couldn't play Pokémon that much because I couldn't read back then. But one year later in 2000 I finally went to elementary school and could enjoy the game. It's like you said I played Pokémon when I was about to for my memories. But I still can remember that I was so amazed by it.
    And sure the feeling is never coming again with the remakes and even with the newer games. But with Pokémon I never lost my ability to enjoy the game like a kid. I am able to be a kid again instead of being disappointed and grumpy. Heck I even found my favourite Pokémon character in Gen 9. I am really sad about all and especially the German Pokémon fanbase who act like boomers. Sure I see the problems but I have mental illnesses and I want to have fun and share it with other people instead of getting bullied and it's so frustrating...

    I'd a similar hyperfixation to get my Pokémon. My Blue/Yellow still working battery, now backed up the carts. Gen 2 sadly eat battery due to RTC, but I have a baby Squirtle showing my Gold TID. Incidentally, you can RNG manipulate TID for Gen 1+2, so you can try to re-create the save. And thankfully use fan tools to change OT names or anything else too. Thank god for the fans!
    The Stadium 1/2 colour info has improved so much in recent years too. There are amazing tools on bluemoonfalls if you'd not see it before, can fully customise and see the Hue shift with nicknames. Awesome video!

    If I’m correct about how mints work in Paldea, you could technically transfer your old team to Paldea and use various items (vitamins, pp ups, bottle caps, etc) to make them competitively viable. Not saying that as a suggestion; I just think it’s funny that that’s technically possible 😆
    Wasn’t expecting the Stadium games to be how you were reunited with your old team. Given the warning in the beginning, I thought you were going to mess with the battery for a half-second. Congratulations on the reunion regardless ❤

    The Pokémon Switch games storing the save data on the console instead of the cartridge like every other Pokémon game ever makes me so mad. I bought a second Switch after years of saving up so that I could trade with myself to complete my Pokédex, only to realize AFTER I had booted up my copy of Sword in my second Switch that nope, I could not trade with Shield on my main Switch BECAUSE IT HAD NO DATA on it. I really, really hope this changes on the Switch 2, because I hate this.

    • @Shinntoku
      @Shinntoku 2 месяца назад

      But you can have save data on two switches? I move my shield save over to my backup switch all the time. Console-based saved are way better than cartridge saves since you can make multiple saves without buying the game over and over

    • @WhiteRaven696
      @WhiteRaven696 2 месяца назад

      @ I can wirelessly send my save from one Switch to the other over and over again, but that as a process is time consuming, especially for a one time trade.

      @@WhiteRaven696 I'd rather spend that little time over having to delete my old saves or buy a second copy of the game if I want to play the games again. Plus now you can borrow pokemon games.

    9:02 this is like...so true. I never played a pokemon game until 2020 because of the pandemic, and so I got melonDS working on my laptop and got Heartgold. I legit was having so much fun just going through the region and just trying to understand how the mechanics worked. When I got to the elite four with my Meganium, physical Butterfree, Haunter, Golduck, Togetic, and Quagsire with Focus Punch and Blizzard cuz I barely got that fighting beat Dark and Ice beat Dragon. I lost a bunch of times there cuz I wanted to do the league nuzlocke style to see if I could. I recently discovered I'm not really a gamer but the kind of kid that played like seven games through their entire life religiously, but that playthrough was one of my favorite experiences I ever had with a videogame.
    Then I played pokemon white and hated it to the point I went straight into romhacks but we don't have to talk about that lol

    My first pokemon is long gone, restarted over like 3 times and the battery dead by now. I think i got pokemon stadium in 2008 much to late to try and transfer anything (also never got stadium 2).
    All my gen 3/4/5/6/7 pokemon are probably stuck in their previous games for the most part (i dont think i transfered much past gen 4 since gen 5 battle tower was lame so i kept my cool pokemon in soul silver).
    Is a shame my first 2 shinies are trapped in pre gen 6. (before non legendary shinies became so much less relavent with the release of gen 6).
    A shiny spearow i caught with my only pokeball i had left since it appeared right before the 2nd gym on my replay on fire red (caught in 2005) and the next shiny i ever found a blue nosed digglet i caught rocksmashing outside surges gym in soulsilver in 2010.
    I lost alot of my attachemnet to a bunch of pokemon in gen 4 when a friend had a action replays and i was able to catch all these shiny legendaries in my diamond playthrough, kinda made all my pokemon feel worthless when i could just magic up shiny legendaries.

    My first pokemon game was alpha sapphire for my 3ds. I'm pretty young. I don't have my original as pokemon anymore though. But I probably swept with an overleveled surf waterfall dive hydrocannon swampert and I don't have any fondness for it. I have my most recent alpha sapphire team in bank to eventually go to home one day. Next was gold on the virtual console and I loved that game for some reason, even with more technically impressive games to play. I have all of those pokemon but I think I loved the game more for the experience than the pokemon cause I also have little attachment to them, although I did use them all in my ultra sun playthrough, even if typhlosion disobeyed me the whole time.
    But they aren't the reason for this comment. I remember my minecraft creative world from my dad's Ipad. It is long gone I think cause my dad deleted minecraft at some point. I spent so much time there, even if I made new worlds, that one was my home and I could never help constantly adding to it. My (main) home was an impressive tree house and I had so much stuff. I remember pretty much all the stuff there (I think) and it was very impressive for me who was about 7. That world is a part of me and I wish I could play it again. Put it on my pc and play it one more time or something. God do I wish I could have those experiences one more time.

    My brother and I shared (and eventually broke) our gameboy color and had a copy of Red that could never save. Being kids, we assumed that it couldn't save because the last owner of the cartridge messed it up by catching Missingno, so we'd warn other kids that catching Missingno might make it so you can never save. Try explaining an internal battery to a preliterate Pokémon obsessed toddler, maybe they'll be smarter than I was at that age, who knows?
    But it was too easy to tilt and disconnect the thingy that went on the controller to connect to the N64 to play that way, and our neighbors lost our copy of red and us their copy of gold long before I had the more stable Gamecube to play them on, so the farthest I'd ever gotten to my recollection was Lavender Town. It could be messed up kid memory, but I think one time I might've even gotten the master ball but not the silph scope somehow and wasted a master ball trying to catch a ghost? I swore that happened back then, but it's been so many years since that I have no idea how accurate my memory of this is. I do remember my older brother got to encounter Mewtwo once, but the Gameboy color died mid encounter. I think that was the most far either of us got since it was the span of the Gameboy Color's battery life and that was all we could play. Batteries die? New run. So needless to say I preferred Pokémon Stadium and Snap and Stadium 2 at the time and they and the anime and plushies made up most of my gen 1 and 2 experience. I loved the shut out of Ruby because it was the first handheld Pokémon game that was all mine and that could SAVE! My brother and I broke the Gameboy color fighting over it, so my parents were smart enough to punish us but when Christmas came around, get us our own Gameboy advanced systems and a link cable and my brother got Sapphire version, the chronology of this is messy because I'm no longer a young warthog, but I figured I'd share my experience in case anyone happens to be hyperfixating on people recounting their early Pokémon memories. I'm hooked on MLO Grimdark fanfic readings atm despite never finishing the series, we don't exactly choose what makes brain go brrr, so here's some soup, microwaved miso with a nori sheet roughly cut to try to emulate Missingo on top, but the pieces are floating apart and bound to get soggy if you aren't quick. What am I even talking about?

  • @costelinha1867
    @costelinha1867 Месяц назад

    If I'm not mistaken the logo with a black box in the game boy happens when you turn the console without a cartridge inserted, meaning the console was just not being able to read the cartridge for some reason.
    My original pokemon saves? my first pokemon on the other hand? gone... reduced to atoms, I don't even remember what they were, other than a save of pokemon red with a Mew named Goku (because of course he was named Goku), also gone, forever.
    In fact, recently I lost EVEN MORE pokemon because when transfering files I corrupted my entire SD card from my modded DS accidentally, and wasn't able to back up anything lol.
    Also I'd love to get one of those analogue consoles, but shit is expensive, I live in brazil, and I'm unemployed lol.

    I was curious how you would recover the Pokemon with the batteries dead.
    I have a Gameboy Cartridge reader that I can plug into my computer, but sadly, even if you have never loaded your game to see the error message, if the battery dies, they're still lost.
    Pokemon Stadium saves is an amazing way to recover them!

    I'd guess pins on a chip are loose inside or the pins you can see at the bottom of the cartridge are damaged. It's not too hard of a fix if you know your way around an iron solder.
