Great and very informative video. I’ve already scratched my head about how this might work and which tools I need for creating my own wavetables. Thx a lot!
@@Bernd_Bruening you can also use serum wavetables (and the Editor too) or Hive. The only thing to keep in mind is that the Wave can only use 64 or less waves in a table.
Well, looks like this may be my first Behringer synth thanks to your videos! Wavetable synthesis has always been my favorite form of synthesis, though I could never afford the original PPG Wave. But I do have both a Waldorf Quantum which is a powerhouse of a synth, and a Waldorf Microwave XTk which is sort of a direct descendant of the PPG… but I really wanted the closest thing to that vintage PPG Wave sound, and if the pandemic wouldn’t have wiped me out financially, I would have got the Groove Synthesis 3rd Wave… but now, it’s looking like this Behringer Wave is the one to get!
Great walkthrough. Good nod to the wavetable editor / creator. And balancing out the scan through the table is a huge part of the process, and an art in itself. Well done!
@@Canal_Noir_Film thank you! I‘m glad to read that the process of using only parts of the table came through, as I realized later that it’s maybe hard to get without visualization.
@@tomnoise23 It did. And it was emphasized really well when you adjusted it by how suddenly musical it became. I love that the whole process is so immediate by using the dials. @@mske903 Könnte sein, habe ich nicht probiert. Kann der Wavetables mit mehr als 5 waves/cycles ausgeben? Der Wave braucht 64, sonst hat man Stille im Verlauf.
Sadly it is pretty unlikely. Like many modern synth makers, if you want to control it with a larger keyboard you are expected to use it as a monster sound module, with most of its footprint taken up by 49 keys you’ll never use. Then you’ll get the non-players piping up in Internet forums telling you how unenlightened you are for actually wanting to play with both hands. The same people fail to understand the concept of a synthesizer as a self-contained instrument rather than a glorified computer peripheral.
Nice... I don't normally like random waves in a wavetable sequence I tend to prefer sampling and having smooth waveforms over picking random ones. But this was very cool and ended up being much nicer with the smoothing! .. I think the Wave is shaping up to be something good..
I will experiment with converted samples next. Mode 1 might be the way to go about that too. I was also surprised how it turned out. It was literally a random set of wavecycles. Happy accidents…
@@tomnoise23 I'm personally very confused how this doesn't result in extreme popping sounds as you don't typically want to see a d/a output 'discrete' voltages that step from say... 'zero' to 'full' output in one sample. And yet... it doesn't. Not sure what kind of smoothing can prevent that but something either in the digital (algorithm) domain or analog (LC) is keeping the damaging stuff from reaching the speakers and our ears. If you know what's going on there I'm definitely interested....
@ I created the wavecycles literally in a random manner, but nevertheless they all have the same base Note and wavelength. Maybe that‘s the reason, dunno?
Oh goodess - after watching these videos, my 2.2 is looking less and less attractive with age-related liabilities, size and delicate electronics. I'll probably keep it, but I'm going to definitely get one of these over the 3rd Wave. This seems to be more of a "correct" distillation of the PPG sound with a few abilities from the Waveterm. As long as it displays the proper aliasing, imaging, scanning glitches and odd envelope/LFO behaviours of the originals, this should please most PPG owners. It will fit on the top of a 2.2/2.3 very well too.
I’m in the exact same situation. My 2.2 works, but crashes after ten minutes, the keybed needs rebushing, the PSU recapping. A lot of work to make it really usable again. I’ll definitely go for the Behringer wave, but I will keep my 2.2. Unless I meet a young, enthousiastic person who would care about this fossil.

Is there a way to create wavetables that are more gradual, like for example the wavetable goes from a sinewave to a sawtooth smoothly?
