Create Dreamy Photography with a MACRO Lens | Tips & Tricks

  • I like to keep things simple: find a pleasing subject, have a basic starting point with settings and adjust according to the light, then compose the image creating soft dreamlike photographs with a sharp center of interest.
    Most of the time, my favorite way to take a photo with my macro lens or any lens is to hand-hold (no tripod), no flash, and with wide-open apertures. No focus stacking and hopefully not too much editing afterward. I don’t have a problem with any of those things. In fact, I admire what many other photographers do and I enjoy viewing beautiful photographs in all styles of photography, it’s just that this is my comfort zone and while it’s good to sometimes push yourself to try different things, I just love to go outside and enjoy nature, this makes me feel at peace and I’m happy to find subjects to photograph without a lot of fuss and with nothing holding me back.
    I’m always experimenting, so sometimes my settings can be all over the place, I’m still learning and discovering what works best in different lighting conditions.
    In this video, I share several tips and a couple of hacks for creating creamy soft photographs with a macro lens. Most of these examples are close-ups and not necessarily macro photography, but for me, this lens isn’t just for macro photography, it is sort of an ‘all-purpose lens’ and sometimes getting really close to a subject is a bonus!
    * You can create a similar look to your photos with just about any camera and lens if the lens can go somewhere between f/1.2 - f/4 or a telephoto lens at around f/5.6, together with some of these other tips. *

    You took one “subject” (a flowering Magnolia tree) and created many satisfying images. And “shooting throw” plastic bags was a bonus! I found this video gently inspiring. Thank you Liesl.

I hope you can enjoy the new video out today as well, I know I use a tele-lens in that one but it is not much different from the macro lens. And I hope you have a great time out there with your camera!

    These are very much the kind of photos I would be proud to take. Natural, hand held and not over edited. You must have a very steady hand to hold the flower and petal in place. As a beginner I am trying to get to grips with my dslr settings. May I ask please if you shoot in manual? I have 70-300mm lens also extension tubes and look forward to experimenting now I've seen your video. Thank you for sharing your tips.

    • @LieslHuddleston
      @LieslHuddleston  3 года назад +1

      Thank you so much, Julia! Yes, I am very lucky that my hands are steady (for now!) Enjoy this time as a beginner, it is so exciting to play and experiment with your settings and compositions.
      Yes, I almost always shoot in manual mode, I will rarely use auto ISO in manual mode if I'm trying to capture birds or moving subjects in changing light. I know it is tricky to get used to manual settings, but keep trying and you will eventually get used to it - I still make lots of mistakes, but I always do better when I practice a lot! :D

    • @juliabyczynski3253
      @juliabyczynski3253 3 года назад

      @@LieslHuddlestonI usually shoot on aperture priority and with my ISO at 100 or 200. I should experiment more though if I am to advance. Need to practice more than I do. It is an exciting time but very very frustrating sometimes.

    • @LieslHuddleston
      @LieslHuddleston  3 года назад +1

      @@juliabyczynski3253 You know, if you are happy with the results you see on your live screen when you take a photo and it is working with whatever settings you're using, like aperture priority etc., then I see no problem with that. If you work on being creative with your compositions and try to tell a story with your photos, (that isn't always possible, but you can try) then that is the most meaningful part. It is good yes, to learn to use ISO, Shutter speed and Aperture in manual mode, so that you know how to change them if you are not happy with a certain photo in an auto setting. But it all depends on the time you have at hand and how you feel your results are turning out :)

    Glad to see someone else shooting macro handheld just like me. You pretty much just recreated all my secrets! LOL Keep up the good work and happy shooting!

      Haha! Thanks, Chad! I quite admire those who use tripods, I feel like it takes a lot of patience. Someone needs to do a timelapse of a macro photographer shooting handheld vs. one with a tripod - that would be fun to see :D
